Renders Gone Wild!

Okay, this CAN"T be right.
But more probably, it's my understanding that's out of whack -- so am hoping to be set straight.
Does exporting a self-contained .mov QuickTime movie from a Final Cut Timeline, using the Current Settings default, require re-rendering of all filters and effects?
I had always thought that it didn't -- that if everything in the Timeline was already fully and completely rendered, then the export should take no longer than if I were exporting the exact same Timeline but with no effects or filters applied.
Nevertheless...
I have two versions of the same 52-minute sequence. Version A has no filters applied (except for some basic Color Correcting). Version B is the exact same edit, but includes a few filters on various clips -- some of which required quite long renders. But the renders were done; the sequence was saved; everything plays back fine, and there are NO "please-render-me" colors in the Timeline whatsoever. (And I've pressed Opt-R several times just to be sure.)
I can export a self-contained .mov of Version A in less than real time (takes about 35 minutes).
If I try the same export with FULLY RENDERED Version B, the "Writing Audio and Video..." window gives me an estimate of 7 Hours by the time it gets to 3%. And the estimate seems to keep growing while the progress seems to keep slowing! (It just increased to 8 hours as I type this -- but it's still saying only 3% done).
And what's really baffling me is I get the exact same thing even if I configure the export to be just a reference movie. Usually that makes the export much faster; in this case, I just get the same staggeringly huge time estimates -- it literally just changed to 9 hours this very second, but still at 3%.
These time estimates total much longer than the original, already absurdly-long renders took. So clearly something's gone crazy here. But WHY would a completely rendered, standard def, 29.97 NTSC Easy Setup sequence behave this way?
(It literally just changed to 10 hours! I'm not making this up -- and still at "3%". I've never seen anything like this before. Oh, it finally jumped to 4%. And BTW, all this is happening after I quit and relaunched FCP.)
Any trouble shooting insights on this one would be hugely appreciated!
John B.
Toronto
(FYI -- just before I hit "Post Message" -- it's now at 5% with an estimate of 9 hours, after briefly climbing to 11 hours while I proofread this post.)

Thanks David --
I'll check that point (along with Andy's suggestions) as soon as I'm back in my edit office -- which might not be for another day or so.
Meantime though:
1) As to David's point, "in theory", would that issue not have been rendered moot (sorry -- couldn't resist) by my having pressed and re-pressed Opt-R? Or is Opt-R not quite the "render everything whether it needs it or not and don't give me any guff" command I thought it was?
2) Is my original working assumption actually true -- that a Timeline in which everything has been well and truly rendered, should "in theory" export just as fast as the same Timeline sans any render-worthy filters or effects?
(I'm either going to understand this, or die trying.)

Hello. My iphone 4, iOS 6.1.3 gone wild....everything is going in slow motion, every app i open is running in frames...i tried reseting the handset, with back-up, without backup(as a new iPhone) and the result is the same. My battery percentage is going down down down only by looking at my phone, imess is making me crazy, after i write the name for the recipient the keyboard appears after 2 min...and the list is looooong...everything is gone wild ! Why? What can i do ?

I'm having similar issues just lately. The phone itself is very slow to respond to the touch, just scrolling between home screens is a chore at times. There have been about 2 incidents of random vibration from it. Closing home screen folders takes a couple of attempts. I find that I'm also having delayed keyboard responses when typing messages to my contacts.
Also, sometimes when I press the sleep/wake button it takes about 30 seconds to register it and actually lock or wake up.
Have you experienced the backlight failing to light up? Like if I get a message it flashes up then goes black straight after and when you press the sleep/wake or home button it lights up again but very very dimly and you have to press the sleep/wake button as if locking it and then press it again to bring the screen up properly?
Mine is also on 6.1.3(10B329), model MD245B/A, obviously not Jailbroken, carrier unlocked from Vodafone (but that was months and months ago). Roughly 17gb of storage space left.
This has only started happening in the last 2 weeks. Haven't tried the reset or anything yet though.

  • Safari Web Content Gone Wild!?!?!?!

I use a product named Scannerz for drive testing. I visited their site last night and they had an article about using Activity Monitor to evaluate performance problems with Mountain Lion. I posted several links to it last night. Here's the link:
    http://scsc-online.com/Activity%20Monitor.html
In any case, in it they describe a Safari Web Content problem where, for some reason it uses tons of memory. I was cruising this site, doing some posts, and guess what? The very same problem they described happened to me. I've never seen this before.
    Here's what happened:
I was reading a post in the iMac section and the guy linked to another post. I did a right-click to his link and opened it up in a new window. That post was about setting hibernate levels, so I opened up another Safari window to do a Google search on hibernate levels. I found an article and clicked on it. I read the article. At the bottom was a link (an ad) for Microsoft Surface (their tablet, I guess). I clicked on it just to see what this thing was all about for kicks. In any case, when the page loaded, Safari pretty much locked up. It wouldn't load anything, and all Safari Windows were locked up. The fans on my system suddenly kicked on full speed - so loud I could hear it, which is weird for them. I opened up Activity Monitor and Safari Web Content was eating up over 2GB of RAM, the memory readings on the memory graph were fluctuating like crazy. One second (and I do mean second) it would show hundreds of megabytes of free memory, then there would be none, then there would be a little, ......you get the picture, it made no sense.
I might have thought this reasonable if every single Safari Window I had open were all playing hi-def videos, but they were all essentially just basic HTML pages with no dynamic content at all. The only one with dynamic content (at least I think it was dynamic content - the page never loaded) was for Microsoft Surface (or whatever it's called) - I closed that page when the "Safari Web Content Gone Wild" session began.
After closing all Safari windows but this one, the system seems to have settled down. I assume this is a Mountain Lion/Safari Web Content bug (either that, or Apple is conspiring against Microsoft to the point they aren't allowing their ads to show!! )
Anyone have any idea what triggers this? Is it system related, or will this happen on anything running ML?
    Thanks in advance.

I have seen this with a javascript widget. This widget had a revolving set of page thumbnails that you would cycle through when scrolling them. However, when you scrolled them in Safari, it locked up as you describe.

  • Newly installed Mail app has just gone WILD!!!

Everything was fine in Mail until I created a new accounts for my new MobileMe email address. Now I have these problems:
    1. I can no longer send mail from the .mac aliases, only from the main account. My password, even though identical to the main password, is not accepted on the aliases.
    2. I am getting two, three or more copies of every email, and not just new ones; even my emails from last year are being duplicated.
    3. When I receive email from one particular address I get a copy every second or so, without limit. This makes my computer very hot and I have to dispose of the extras quickly and then quit as soon as possible. It's a mail merged email with an embedded rota which I have generated myself from a website I help to run and has always performed perfectly well in the past. My internet connection appears to be running at normal speed, however. Today I sent one which appeared as sixteen emails before I clicked the triangle to open the folder. It then became 164! Rebuilding the mailbox has little effect. I think it may have stopped one message duplicating but it certainly didn't work today.
The scariest part of all this (apart from losing email like I'm keeping it in a colander) is that while this email is busy multiplying in my inbox, a selection of my 2008 emails is being sent to people on the list; in the middle of the duplicating file mayhem my husband 'phoned from work to complain that he was receiving my old email at the same sort of rate that I was receiving copies of the rota.
And then my daughter complained the same was happening to her. And then I found I'd had it all emailed to me as well - so now the old emails I haven't lost are sitting there, apparently unread, with incorrect dates and five or six copies of each one! I'm wondering how many of my friends have been treated to a selection of fifty or so of my old emails and what I might have written about them in 'confidence'! Not that I'm given to mouthing off about people in emails but without reading them all I wonder just what might be in them.
    4. When I try to delete the second, third and fourth copies of other emails I will suddenly find that other unselected emails, usually from just below in the list, have disappeared along with them and I have to retrieve them from the trash. The alternative is to click 'Undo' but I have to do that about three times before the missing file reappears - and then I have to try and re-delete three files without losing any others in the process. This is hopeless - it's one step forwards and three steps backwards. I also have to memorise which files are around the one I wish to delete before carrying out the action so I will know if anything else has gone.
    5. A few days ago I tried to open Mail and found that ALL my email for this year had disappeared. I found some mail from mid July to August in the bin, but all my other 2008 mail was gone. 2007 is still there. I opened it today and found that a random remnant of my 2008 email was in my inbox, but only about a twentieth of the original contents.
    6. I'm so glad I still have Entourage installed on my old computer because it's working just fine, apart from the issue I've outlined under point 1. I've retrieved all sorts of important emails from it.
This copy of Mail should be working very well. I only did a fresh system install on a new hard drive about a month ago and everything else is working fine (except a couple of finder windows that just vanished suddenly the other day).
Sorry this is long but I've tried to put several entries into one post. I originally posted this on the wrong forum - it was for MobileMe Mail, but I didn't notice the enclosing folder which was MobileMe on iPhone and iPod Touch; I am using MobileMe on my MacBook Pro. Space Herpes suggested I repost it on this forum to get more help. I had six copies of the email notification of his post so I am going ahead as this HAS to get sorted!

I've left it for a few days before responding because for some reason I hardly got any email for a couple of days and it didn't seem to be completely fixed at first as my rules took a while to kick in again and some junk appeared in my inbox. I've also been too busy to worry about it this week - daughter is starting Uni at the weekend and it's all a mad panic to set her up to move out! Apologies that I posted this on the first thread where this question went before I was prompted to move it to a more appropriate place. I didn't realise I was on the wrong board.
I have had a fair amount of messages today and I'm pleased to say I've only had one copy of everything and the subjects are back to normal - so thank you very, very much as you seem to have solved my problems. I notice that I only have the account for my [email protected] email address and I do wonder whether I need to have an account for the xxxxxx.me.com address as well? Was that possibly responsible for some of the duplicates? Are they interchangeable in Mail?
Despite the fix I do still have the corruption in my inbox, though. I've lost many, many emails and all the problems I mentioned before seem to be permanent in my 2008 mail. I have loads of duplicate copies and the subjects are all mixed up. I also have quite a few recent messages that didn't get downloaded from the server because it thought I was offline.
On my old computer I have everything as it was before. Would it be possible to copy them across somehow without losing my sent mail from this computer - or should I just be content to go to my old computer if I want to refer to anything I've lost?

  • Magic Trackpad gone wild

Has anyone seen a Magic Trackpad go wild?
It seems to be OK all morning then last two days around now all of a sudden it just seems to scroll over and click on everything on my desktop so fast I cannot really see what is happening. Applications launching etc. like crazy. I do not think it is inteference. If I turn it off or take it way out in the garage the iMac settles down. It has been a bit be humid down here.
When the trackpad goes wild I battery-up a standby magic mouse to do my work. After awhile I can power the magic trackpad back up or go out retrieve it from the garage and it seems ok.

Again, If I understand the technology correctly these devices can be sensitive to humidity. I am 99% sure mine became very sensitive. They run on the electronic principle of capacitance. If you have ever been to Las Vegas, which is really dry, you will be shocked by the static electricity. The other side of the coin is humidity.
Notice if you leave mosturizer on your hands or if they are not completely dry any of these devices can act weird. I could see how the they could go bad - or become more sensitive. Capacitors tend to be the weak link in lots of electronics.
I took mine back to the Apple Store and the new one is just fine.  Humidity or not.

  • Font Size Gone Wild

I'm having this weird problem on the site I'm building. Every so often, when I put something in italic, the font size for the word I've italicized ends up way bigger than the words around it.
I have been marking the word I want to italicize and using the Font tab in the Format pulldown to select Italic.
So I decided to mark the word and use the Show Fonts pulldown to select exactly the type I want (Helvetica Neua 12 pt. italic) for the word. But that didn't work either.
    What is going on?

I got burned out trying to fix this and haven't gone back to it until today.
Still can't solve the problem, and I'm talking the site live on Monday.
I don't really understand your suggestion aboout publishing the site to a folder on my hard drive.
Can you explain in a bit more detail?
This is just nuts. If I leave the words in question in roman type there's no problem. As soon as I add the italics the font size on the italacised words jumps up several sizes. I tried using command i to italicize the words, but that didn't make any difference either. I tried putting the text into Word and pasting it into the box. That didn't help.
Right now I'm thinking I'll just have to leave these book titles in roman.

  • SYSLOGD gone wild - where are the files?

    Hey all,
Yesterday I had 15GB of free HD yesterday, it told me today that I was down to 100MB.
Confused - because I haven't added any files, I check the activity monitor and found that SYSLOGD was running, and using an absurd amount of processor and disc access.
I searched on it, and it seems to relate to Time Machine, which I'm not using.
SO... I rebooted, and now it's not running any more.  BUT - the hard disc space is still gone, and I don't know where the files are that I need to delete to free it up.
I've loaded a disc scanning utility to try to find where a new 15GB file might be hiding, but I'm thinking it's in the hidden area of the disc.
QUESTION 1 : Where are the files SYSLOGD wrote and how can I delete them?
QUESTION 2:  What made it run, and how can I keep it from happening again?
    Thanks!

If you're looking for trash sounds, those are located in /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ . If you're wanting to change the put stuff in trash and empty trash sounds, then follow these steps.
Convert your sounds to aif, save them in some convenient location.
Replace the two sound files *"move to trash"* and *"drag to trash"* inside the Finder and Dock folders, respectively, inside the SystemSounds folder, with the one you want for putting things in the trash and the *"empty trash*" one inside the Finder folder with the new one for emptying the trash.
Ensure that you rename the new ones the same as the originals. (I usually copy the originals and add a .bak suffix so I can restore the sounds to their original condition.)
OPTION-click the Finder's Dock icon and select Relaunch.
Do note that if you'll have to authenticate to copy, rename, and replace these files. I use the Terminal with the sudo command to affect the changes.

  • Bold fonts on certain websites - font smoothing gone wild?

    Hi,
I purchased a 13" MacBook Pro last week and I'm having a bit of an issue regarding font smoothing/font rendering on certain websites. I'll do my best to try and explain...
When loading certain websites (mainly vBulletin-based forums, but this happens on quite a few other sites too) the text looks bold and ugly, the same sites look fine on my friends 15" MacBook Pro and 24" iMac - as an example, his looks like the sample on the left and mine looks like the sample on the right:
http://i47.tinypic.com/e7b8ro.jpg (not my screenshot, but my issue is exactly the same)
I've done some searching and other people have fixed this problem using the following command:
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 3
This basically changes the hidden font smoothing settings which were removed in 10.6, in 10.5 you had the following options to choose from:
Automatic - Best for Main Display
Standard - Best for CRT (1)
    Light (2)
Medium - Best for Flat Panel (3)
    Strong (4)
If I set the command above to 1, 2 or 3 my fonts don't change at all and still look bold and horrible. If I set the command to "4" (Strong), do the usual log out and back in, then I get the correct looking fonts on the websites I had issues with BUT my system fonts and other websites now have a very soft, almost out of focus font, probably due to this being the Strong smoothing setting. Likewise if I set the command to "0" (turning font smoothing off) I get the correct looking fonts on the problematic websites but again system fonts look odd, not nice and smooth (due to font smoothing being turned off)
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can try next please? Could this be down to the resolution/DPI of the 13" MBP's screen?
    Thanks,
    Verta

Hey! I had exactly the same issue as you! Do you have an addon called WebSecurityKeeper installed into your Firefox, without your permission? Check your Addons list pls. I had this addon and when I uninstalled it, my fonts in Firefox returned to normal.
Its possibly a malicious addon. But I am not sure. I have no idea how it got installed my computer.

  • MacBookPro cursor/trackpad gone wild?!

I've got an older (2006) MacBookPro (model A1211). It's been a great workhorse machine. Until recently. Suddenly, for no reason I can determine, my cursor jumps all over the page when Im typing. If emails, 5 or 6 new windows will suddenly open, or the cursor backtracks into the text and I end up overwriting previous text, or whole sections will suddenly be highlighted and - if I don't catch it - deleted. I'll type several lines and then "wham" it's all gone and the cursor has returned to the starting point and my text is gone. Or it will jump down into my signature. This happens no matter the program, i.e. email, facebook, MS word - whatever I'm typing in.
The only thing I can correlate this to is pressure around he trackpad. If I type with my wrists arched and my arms above the machine, it seems to work OK. BUT, if I type as normal with my wrists resting on the machine either side of the trackpad it's anyone's guess what will happen. Took it to a local iDoctors and got hit with a $39 "diagnostic fee" and they never even opened the machine up. They just suggested buying a new keyboard for $150.
Anyone else experience this? (Oh, the iDoctor said newer MBP's have adjustable track pads that could solve this but as mine is not adjustable that's why I need a new keyboard?)

Shut down your computer and pull out the battery.  Check to see if the battery is swollen.  I had a similar issue (cursor selecting items unoontrolably).  The battery was slightly swollen which was pushing up on the trackpad thereby engaging the selector.

  • Weekly reports gone wild!

Anyone else looked at their most recent weekly reports. I have a number of sites that have gone from something like 300-500 hits a week to over 26,000.  Another from about 100 to over 6,000..
If it was one client and they had been on tv or something, it would make sense, but why are there about half a dozen that have crazy hits... Is it real?

    Hey tyj00123,
Maybe they all got crawled last week for some reasona nd recorded a lot of hits. Go by the dashboard stats. If they're showing the same numbers and they shouldnt' be you should submit a case with support and someone will investigate this for you.

  • Proximity Sensor Gone Wild; How to Check?

On the iPhone 4S, the proximity sensor is constantly on by default to support Siri. Turning off Raise to Speak is supposed to turn off the proximity sensor, and usually it does. But for some reason, sometimes the proximity sensor will come back on even when Raise to Speak is still off.
This is a problem because the proximity sensor being on means the difference between a 4-hour and 8-hour battery life for me. I can fix it temporarily by turn off Siri, then doing a hard reset. It always comes back on again eventually though.
On my iMac8,1, I can see if the proximity sensor is on with the iSight camera, which conveniently captures the IR signal from the sensor, so I can figure out if the sensor is causing problems and do the hard reset. On newer FaceTime HD cameras, this is no longer visible, which means I now have a problem and I don't know when it's actually manifesting itself. Is the proximity sensor a known issue? What can I use to detect if it's on? Better yet, is there a fix for the problem?

    @piyush123
If you suspect that it is a damaged or defective sensor, I believe that it would require a board replacement. I do not think it is a separate part. • PowerBook gone wild with new battery

My son just got a hand-me-down G4 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook at work. When he got it the battery would not hold a charge for more than about 5 minutes. We checked the serial number and it was part of the PowerBook battery recall so we requested a battery exchange from, Apple. The new battery arrived today and when he put it in, the PowerBook would not start up even on AC.
He reset the PMU and it seemed to be OK but when the computer went to sleep he could not wake it up. He uplugged it and took out the battery but it will not restart. Also, the charge indicator on the AC adapter turned green after about an hour but the battery indicator in the menu bar still says 0%. He pushed the test button on the bottom of the battery but no lights come on so the battery can't be charged.
Anyone see this behavior on another machine? Any suggestions on what is wrong or how to fix it?
    Please help.
    Thanks,
