Rendezvous and 10.5

After upgrading to 10.5.6 I can't run Autopage. I get the following message: Haven't yet located Autopage pagination server via Rendezvous - please try again. [10328]." Does anyone have an idea as to what's going on? Do I have to go back to 10.5.0?

The email I refer to as coming from Keith is from the developer.
Yes, I understand that. Hence my comment that I would have presumed that the developer would have informed you if an upgrade was necessary.
I was waiting to upgrade to the version for the Intel machines but it's not done yet.
If the Autopage plugin isn't Intel-native, you may want to try running QuarkXpress under Rosetta. That's often necessary when one component, particularly a plug-in, isn't Intel-native yet. But I would have expected that if running under Rosetta was necessary under 10.5.6, it would have also been necessary under 10.5.4 so my guess is that isn't the issue. Might be worth a try, though.
The price from the developer to fix the problem as it is now is $500. Seems a steep charge for fixing something that broke in Apple Version 10.5.6.
Eventually an OS upgrade will break almost any application. If Autopage 6.0.3 is as old as it would seem (I can't find the exact release date), you may be lucky that it worked this long.

  • Programmatically creating a Rendezvous : missing variable in Result container

    Hi everybody,
For my tests purpose, I need to programmatically create a sequence. In this sequence, I need to insert Rendezvous steps.
Everything works fine when creating them, but when I execute the sequence / steps created this error always show up for rendezvous step :
Unknown variable 'TimeoutOccured' ; Error accessing item 'Result.TimeoutOccured'
According to the TS help, this variable should be created when I configure the step for the rendezvous operation. Drag and dropping the step from the TS insertion palette works fine, and the variable is created when chosing the operation 'rendezvous'. But when doing the same thing through programmation, the variable is not created.
Here are the steps executed to create the RDV step :
I create a new step using method Engine.NewStep
I set the step name using Step.Name
I set the rendezvous properties using a statement (Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep is the variable holding the the step reference) :
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.Operation = 1, //A value that specifies the operation for the step to perform. The valid values are 0 = Create, 1 = Rendezvous, and 2 = Get Status
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.NameOrRefExpr = Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RefName, //Contains the Rendezvous Name expression for the Create operation and the Rendezvous Name or Reference expression for all other Rendezvous operations
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.TimeoutEnabled = False, //The Timeout Enabled setting for the Rendezvous operation
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.ErrorOnTimeout = True, //The Timeout Causes Run-Time Error setting for the Rendezvous operation
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.RendezvousCountExpr = Parameters.NbBranches, //The Number of Threads Per Rendezvous expression for the Create operation
Parameters.BranchesRendezVous.RDVStep.AsStep.Lifetime = 3, //A value that specifies the Lifetime setting to use for the Create operation. The valid values are 0 = Same as Sequence, 1 = Same as Thread, 2 = Use Object Reference, and 3 = Same as Execution
    4. Then I insert the step in my current sequence using method Sequence.InsertStep
Everything works fine, the rendezvous step is perfectly created and all properties are set finely. However, the variable TimeouOccured is missing in the Step.Result container (TS help says that this propoerty exists when the step is configured as a rendezvous operation (cf. Operation = 1)).
Am I doing something wrong somewhere ? Why is this variable missing ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Doug,
TS help says that this property exists when the step is configured as a rendezvous operation (cf. Operation = 1)... So shouldn't it be created when I create / insert the step ?
I find it very weired to add a subproperty to a StepType, in the Result container...

  • Rendezvous Size Is stuck at 2

I am trying to debug a program with Rendezvous. In this simplified version, I am trying to change the number of Rendezvous and then correct the actual number of Rendezvous.
I understand that there is a problem if you do not destroy the Rendezvous when you start the creation. To correct for this problem, I terminate Labview completely and restart before I run the VI. In this example I create 3  Rendezvous at the beginning and resize back to 2. During the process I use the status portion to determine the size of the Rendezvous, it turns out to be 1 not 2.
I am running Labview 8.5.1 and included my example. Is there another way to clear the Rendezvous out?

You should let the upper (or lower), 'Get Rendezvous' pick up an existing rendezvous.
Also you should make sure that you first create the rendezvous, and then connect to the rendezvous:

  • Rendezvous Printing Stopped

We had a HP Laser Jet Postscript printer hooked up to our Tower G5 running OS X Server V 10.3.9. We had print services working, and all of our clients could see and print to that HP printer. For some reason though, this morning, it just stopped working. The Server that the printer is connected to can print, but no clients can print.
I can actually delete the HP printer on the printer setup utility on the client, and re - set it back up using Appletalk printing instead of Rendezvous, and it starts working. But it has been working under rendezvous before, it just stopped for no reason.
When I look in the Server Administrator under print services, there are no jobs printing, and nothing in the logs that says any jobs or any problems.
    Any ideas??

  • JMS - Tibco Rendezvous bridge

    Hello:
Is it possible to use BEA's Tibco Adapter without using WLI?
I would like to deploy the BEA Tibco adapter ear (downloaded from BEA site)
in Weblogic Server 7.0 and try to configure it like a messaging bridge to
              talk between JMS and RV.
Is there any easy work around to create a JMS - RV adapter without WLI?
Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.
(I posted this message in weblogic.integration.developer group too..)
              Thanks,
              Karthik.

    Thanks Tom.
I'm aware of the Tibco's JMS.
I guess many developers have bitter experience with TIBCO's JMS.
Example, the following posting in this newsgroup (see copy and paste below)
I too would personally perfer to use something like "BEA's Tibco adapter".
I guess I have to wait for a while until I start with WLI.

  • Printer no longer recognized by Extreme Base Station

I have had my Epson Stylus Photo 900 connected to the base station and working for some time. I tried printing to it today and nothing happened. I ran the Printer Setup Utility and I get only two options: one to set up browser and one to set up IP printer, no option to choose Rendezvous and add the printer. If I attach the printer to my iMac I can run Epson utilities on it but can't print to it. I downloaded and reinstalled the printer driver and ran fix permission in the Disk utility. Appreciate your help. Thanks Rich

I had the same problem after my computer got infected (And I am running McAfee with the firewall!).  The problem isn't your print driver, the problem is in your Windows operating system.  Try to reload or repair Windows from your backup disk (hope you have one).  It took three tries before i finally got the trojan eliminated and could reload Windows.

  • Sharing Databases - Collaboration

(I apologize if this is off-topic, or this was posted in the wrong forum! If you have recommendations as to where I should go to ask this or other similar questions, please let me know!)
Open question to the Mac Community:
I have an ongoing problem that I am unable to successfully resolve -- though I've tried several different software products, all of which have major shortcomings for my particular usage.
To begin with, I need to state my current working conditions and why there is a particular issue for me. I am a (very) small business, with two employees (other than myself.) One works in the same office (therefore accessible by rendezvous) and the other at a remote location (only accessible via the Internet or phone.) It is critical that we share all sorts of data with each other, though we do need to collaborate as well as simply share data (that is, not just read access between us, but working on the same data with read/write privileges, and with the minimal possibility of overwriting the other person's data in the process -- ideally NO overwriting at all!
There are two particular issues, one is major, and the other minor. Major first:
    1) We need a good task manager/project management application that can be easily synced without any overwriting of tasks. This way we can track where we are on any project and/or issue, as well as delegate tasks to another. We have found the PERFECT application, Things (by Cultured Code), which is beautiful, flexible and works great. It also syncs with my iPhone, which makes it a double bonus. However, it does not sync with other machines. We have hacked it to work around the issue, by sharing the same database file. However, it does not "save" the database in real time -- rather it is stored in the cache and only saved permanently upon quitting the application. (This means that the last person to close the application will have their data stick, and the others will be overwritten.)
There are some basic workarounds available, such as "commit" and "refresh" applescripts that have been written to help with this, which improves on the problem, but does not eliminate it. This makes it much less of an issue than our database issue is:
We also need a common database to continue to store information for the company. We share one MobileMe ID to sync calendars and addresses (see number 2, below) however we need much more robust information to be stored. This brought me to Bento, which I found to be outstanding -- since we could customize it to store any information we need, in any way we want to display it, etc. We are a web developers, so one of the most important things we need are server information (domain names, usernames/passwords, database info, mx records, dns records, and so on...) Again, Bento is perfect, but it is not sync-able! That is, the problem mentioned above is compounded by the fact that there is no workaround, and this information is, arguably, MORE important than a task manager!
Further, we have found no workaround for this. We have tried sharing the same data file, again, however once again, the last person to close the application will have all their current data overwrite the common data file.
    2) While we currently sync our addresses and calendars using MobileMe, there is no way to select SOME addresses to sync, and others not to. For example, I have personal addresses in there as well as business addresses. Our sales person has addresses/contacts of leads that we all do not need to have access to, so we're bombarded with too much information that is worthless to us (which is made worse when searching for a contact on my iPhone!) I would like ONE library that is synced with all of us (common addresses for the company) yet have my own addresses for personal use (not shared, and can put onto my iPhone) and for the other two members of the company to have one library, each, that is not synced with us so we are ONLY sharing the shared company data.
Again, this second one is a minor issue, since it is a colossal nuisance, but not something that will compromise data that cannot be overwritten/lost company-wide!
This brings me to where I am today: I am completely lost. I don't want to invest in MORE software until I come up with the perfect solution. We are not a big company (obviously) and do not have a lot of money to spend -- however, we will spend a bit if it is worthwhile, and will not need to replace it in a couple months time, again! I know there must be more options out there, but I did not want to go sampling software willy-nilly without some background information first. Any advice/recommendations would come HIGHLY appreciated, and I would be eternally grateful! (I'm thinking, too, that someone out there will find this information useful, as well.)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for any help you could provide
    Life-long Mac user,
    Darren

Thats possible today.   Three people each work on a chapter which is a part of one book.
The three chapters can be copied and pasted into the "master" book.  It  takes planning and  co-ordination, but   quite possible and each chapter could be made in a different country.... and by using Dropbox or similar transporting content to the  "co-ordinating editor"... is simple, and  inexpensive.
With respect to  Tom et al who suggest using feedback, I look for solutions or workarounds  for todays problems.... Apple have had feedback from the release of the application in 2012,  so far very little has been changed and updates seemed more on bug fixing than added functionality.
The current  updates to iWork follow complaints from the professional sector after they were removed, bringing them back follows a reaction they  should have anticipated from its users.
iBooksAuthor was created  for single use, self publishers who do not have the finance or ability to use the main online publishers, and already allows  imports  from Pages and MS Word for text and  widgets allow Keynote and Numbers to be used.

  • Community Nugget 4/08/2007 Action Engines

    Action Engines, What are They?
“An action engine is Ben's term for a functional global which includes extra actions other than just holding the data.”
     (tst , 03-13-2007 01:18 PM)
In a nut shell tst has nailed it except for the “Ben’s term” part. I was originally exposed to the term "Action Engine"
by reading the book ""LabVIEW Applications Development A Course on Advanced LabVIEW Programming Techniques*”.  But
before I get into details of the Action Engine (AE), I will attempt to clarify some terminology.
    Functional Globals
Functional Globals (FG) are VIs that are functionally equivalent to LabVIEW globals. Functional Globals store
information. You can read them or write them and that is it. No fancy stuff. Functional Globals are also referred to as
LV2 globals because LV2 did not have globals but it did support Un-initialized Shift Registers (USRs). The USR is the
    entity that stores the information.
    USR.jpg
    USR’s
Shift Registers (SR) come in two varieties “Initialized” and “un-initialized”. The presence or absence of a wire
feeding the SR from outside the loop distinguishes how LabVIEW will implement the SR. If there is NO wire feeding a
shift register (A), then the SR is not initialized. This is called an “Un-Initialized Shift Register”. The USR variety
is implemented as static buffer that is re-used from call to call. The values written to the USR in and earlier call
persist for access (B) in latter calls**. A Functional Global exploits this behavior by implementing two methods of
interacting with the contents of the USR.
    Functional Global.JPG
In the “Write” action (not shown) the value of “Numeric in” is placed in the USR. In the “Read” action the contents of
the USR are returned via Numeric out.
    Action Engines
An Action Engine (AE) can be thought of as a machine (Engine) that performs some useful task (action) often on
something (typically but not limited to data in a USR). Functional Globals are very specific type of Action Engine.
They have two actions “Write” and “Read”. They operate on the data stored in the USR either by replacing or using the
contents of the USR. So AE’s are a superset of Functional Globals. In many documents the terms AE and FG are
interchangeable. A recent poll on LAVA has indicated that Functional Global is the most popular term. Since this Nugget
was prompted by answering the question “what is an AE?” in the remainder of this document you will find that I will
    generally use the term AE.
    Do What to What?
AE design revolves around the ways the shared resource must be accessed manipulated or monitored. In a Functional
Global, the actions “Write” and “Read” are appropriate. That is not necessarily the case for AEs. AEs can have entirely
different set of actions depending on the interaction requirements for the information stored in the USR. A short list
    follows.
A Configuration AE could allow for multiple processes to share a single copy of the system configuration (in a USR) by
providing actions like “Set Device ID”, Set Device ON-Line…
A hardware device can be realized as an AE that presents actions appropriate to the physical phenomenon being measured
    or controlled.
A DO Port Controller AE could store a reference to the physical device in one SR and the port status in another SR and
have action like: Set Main Motor On”, “E-Stop”, …
An Instrument can be implemented to store the device name and settings with actions like “Set Input ON” “Auto-Scale Y”
    and “Get Trace”,…
Screen Stacks can be implemented by using control references in one USR and maintain a screen view stack in another
then implementing actions like “Set Config Screen”, “Set Login Screen”, “Back”…
Users can be managed using an AE with action such as “Add New User” “Set Password”, “Disable User”…
The list goes on and is limited only by our imagination. Here is an example that shows how a running average can be
    maintained.
    Running_Average_Example.jpg
    Running Average Example
The Running Average Example shown above shows how a running average can be maintained using an AE. The AE is
initialized before the While Loop executes. On each iteration of the loop the simulated measurement value (random
number) is used to update the history of all measurements (Add Number(s)) and the mean is calculated (Calc Mean).
Please note that although the buffer of all measurements is affected in every step of this example, the buffer (USR in
the sub-VI) contents are never part of this VI’s diagram. Since the history is stored in the sub-VI, the history can be
acted on from more than one thread as shown below.
    Parallel_Loops.jpg
In the parallel Loops Example the history is initialized and then two loops run in parallel with one updating the
history and the other plotting the average. Since the History resides inside the USR of the sub-VI the two while loops
are effectively sharing the same block of memory, the block used to store the USR. The Sub-VI was implemented as shown
in the following sequence of images.
    Init.jpg
As was the case with Functional Globals, the actions are implemented as a type def’d enum***** driven case structure.
Appropriate code is present in each case to realize the intended actions. In the “Init” case, contents of “Array in”
are used to initialize the history. In our example above we did not pass an initial array value. Therefore the “Init”
resets the history (cleared the array).
    Add Num.JPG
The operation of the AE when the “Add Number(s)” action is called varies depending on its usage. If the caller passes a
non-empty array, it is appended to the array. Alternatively, passing a value via the Numeric in” control, and leaving
the “Array in” un-wired adds a single element to the history. We used the Numeric In input so we were continually
building our history one value at a time.
    Calc_Mean.JPG
When the “Calc Mean” action is invoked, the average is calculated and returned.

The Traffic Cop Behind the Scenes
A detail I have not mentioned up until now is that AEs should be implemented as VIs that are not reentrant***. VIs that are not reentrant can only be executing in one context at a time. LabVIEW will ensure that if there is ever a situation were two contexts are attempting to act on the same AE at the same time, LabVIEW will schedule the first and the subsequent will wait until the first call completes. This is similar to a traffic cop preventing more than one vehicle from entering an intersection at the same time. The Traffic Cop is illustrated in the following timing diagram were we look at how the processing of two threads is affected by using a single AE.
    Execution_Timeline.JPG
In the figure above the processing time of two processes “P1” and “P2” are illustrated by a red or blue solid arrow respectively. In the parallel loops example shown earlier, P1 could be the “Calc Mean” loop and P2 could be the “Add Number(s)” loop.
     t0 - t1
Both processes are executable and run their assigned tasks. Neither process is accessing the AE.
    t1 – t2
P2 continues to run while P1 calls the AE. Since the AE is idle it is available to run so P1 continues execution running inside the AE until all work inside the AE completes. The dotted arrow shows that the thread for P1 is executing in the data space allocated for the AE.
    t2 –t3
At t2 the AE terminates and both process run as in t0 – t1.
    t3 – t4
This time segment is similar to t1 – t2 with P2 running in the AE.
    t4 – t5
Similar to t2 – t3 the AE terminates and both process run.
    t5 – t6
Similar to t1 – t2. P1 take control of the AE.
    t6 - t7
At t6 P2 attempts to call the AE. Since the AE is not idle it is not available to run. P2 is placed in a resource wait state (it is NOT running) waiting for the resource to become available. The dotted horizontal arrow indicates the process is not executing.
    t7 –t8
At t7 the call of the AE by P1 that started at t5 completes and P1 continues to execute outside of the AE. When the call by P1 completes the AE becomes available. The process P2 is marked as executable. The scheduler includes P2 in its executable threads and the AE is available. P2 then executes inside the AE until the call completes.
    The Beauty of the AE
This behavior of a non-reentrant VI is a wonderful feature we can exploit to eliminate race conditions. Race conditions are the nemesis of many a developer. In hardware this was solved with clocked enabled logic. In LV we solve race conditions with Queues, Semaphores, Rendezvous, Occurrences, and Action Engines!AEs can eliminate race conditions when all operations involving updates of the data stored in the USR are done INSIDE the AE. A very simple illustration of how the encapsulation of USR manipulation is shown in the following set of examples.
    Port_With_Global.jpg
This VI is intended to demonstrate how two bits of an eight-bit port can be used to control the running state of two pumps. To illustrate the control process, one pump will be set running at start-up and then every half second the state of both pumps will be toggled to simulate switching of the supply. This example uses globals and fails miserably.
    Port_With_Global.jpg
In this example we start out by initializing a global variable so that bit “1” (zero based) is the only bit set in an array of eight bits. This turns on Pump 2 to start. Then the “Port Update” and a “State Change” loops run in parallel. In the “Port Update” loop the state of the port is read from the global and used to update the GUI.
In the “State Change” loop, the port status is read and the first Boolean is inverted before being written back to the global. Similarly for the second Boolean. Since the read of the globals both occur before the subsequent data processing, one of the threads will be processing old data.
    Port_With_Action_Engine.jpg
The Action Engine version codes up the same way as the global version but now all of the data manipulation of the port states are encapsulated in the Action Engine  “Port Controller”. This encapsulation ensures all operations involving the data in the USR are forced to happen sequentially even though we did not have to implement any code to achieve this affect.
The key point to take away from this example is a shared resource (the port status in the case) when implemented as AEs come with resource contention resolution built in provided that all manipulation of the shared resource takes place inside the AE.
    Action Engines to the rescue!
Action Engines are not a replacement for Queues, Rendezvous and the other synchronization techniques. They are typically called for when your design dictates that a single resource must be shared by more than one parallel process and none of the LabVIEW provided techniques are sufficient. They require a design of their own to ensure they work correctly. They also have to be developed and supported.

  • Having trouble printing from remote computer

I have an Epson CX4200 connected directly to an iMac G5 running OS 10.5. I access the internet wireless through a router. When I was running 10.4 on the iMac G5, I was able to print via printer sharing from my iMac running 10.3.9 without a hitch. After installing the new OS onto the G5, I choose "print" from the file menu on the older iMac, select the Epson CX4200 from the shared printer drop down menu (it's the only one in the house) and click "print". It looks like the data is spooling to the printer and the printer icon appears in the dock. Then nothing. I go to the iMac G5 and open the printer window. NOthing has been sent. I can't understand why these two operating systems cannot communicate with each other. I am not able to install 10.4 onto the older iMac. When I insert the disc, it just pops it back out. Don't know why that is but I thought if I installed the 10.4 onto the older iMac, that would solve the printer sharing issues. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try?

Okay, so I tried your suggestion and no luck! I also tried every other scenario that the computers allow and nothing. When I went to add a printer, the rendezvous popped up and my printer that is connected to the iMac G5 showed up. If I just choose that and don't select a printer model, just generic, nothing happens when I try to send the job. A printer dialogue box shows something for a split second then returns to "no job printing". However when I choose the printer in rendezvous and then Epson down below, my printer doesn't appear in the list of models. So I chose one that was close and I ended up seeing something happeneing in the printer dialogue box. It says it's connecting to the ip address of my iMac at port 631, but it just spools endlessly and never sends the job.
Do you have any other suggestions or does anyone? There has got to be a way. I can't imagine that Apple would deny people access to a shared printer on their own home network just because the two computers were using different versions of OS X.

  • Notification usage

This may be an obvious question, but I've been unable to find an answer in the forums.
I'm using a Teststand Rendezvous with the batch process model. I cannot find a way to recover if one of the batch sockets fails before the Rendezvous is reached.
For example if I'm using a two socket batch model I create a Rendezvous with number of threads = 2. If socket 0 subsequently fails and terminates but socket 1 keeps running normally, eventually socket 1 reaches the Rendezvous and waits indefinitely because socket 0 never arrives. I can add a timeout to the Rendezvous but this is problematic as the test time to reach the Rendezvous can be difficult to determine - hence this timeout would need to be long to account for all conditions. Additionally the Rendezvous "status" step doesn't appear to provide anything useful to determine the pass/fail status of the other threads in the Rendezvous.
I get similar problems if one of the batch sockets is skipped at startup, i.e. the "Disable Test Socket" checkbox is checked at the "UUT Information" screen.
    I'm using Teststand 2010 with Windows 7

I've also looked at using a "Batch Synchronisation" step instead of the Rendezvous. This method seems to compensate for a socket that terminates prematurely and seems to work ok.
However it still raises the question - how can you practically use the Rendezvous step for runtime failures?
As you've already discovered, if you are using the batch model you are better off using batch synchronization, batch synchronization effectively rendezvous at the beginning and end of each section.
If you want to use rendezvous for non-batch based synchronization and you have the possibility of execution being short-ciruited due to run-time errors, then you will have to do something more complicated in your cleanup. Keep in mind that run-time errors are not typically something that happens in the normal case of running your test sequence, so they should be relatively rare events. In such cases a timeout on the rendezvous with a runtime error when the time-out occurs makes sense in most cases. Keep in mind rendezvous are not likely to be used with multiple instances of the same sequence running, because in such cases, batch synchronization would make more sense. Rendezvous are more geared towards utility threads and other sequences which aren't typically run like a batch. Rendezvous are a lower-level primitive than batch synchronization, batch synchronization is designed for a specific purpose, while rendezvous are more general purpose.
    Hope this helps explain things,

  • Wired stream:  yes; wireless stream:  no

I'll start by saying that I have read through the forum, the tips and troubleshooting, and other areas and couldn't find the specific answer I was looking for. However, if this is a duplicate, I apologize!
I have an Apple TV along with three Macs: a MacPro, a MacBook, and an iMac 20" Core2 Duo. The Apple TV is on the local network wirelessly and syncing with the MacPro which is wired into the network router/switch (Linksys N-router set to only allow G and N). No problems syncing with the MacPro and streaming from the MacPro. Everything is great.
In another room, I have the iMac which is connected to the same central router wirelessly. The connection speed is verified to be N and 130 Mbit. However, when I generate a code to connect this second computer to the Apple TV, the iMac does NOT ever see it. All settings in iTunes (current version) are set correctly for sharing, seeing Apple TV, etc.
As a test, I ran a 50 foot Ethernet cable from the iMac to the central router and, suddenly, I can see the Apple TV and stream from it to the TV. When I switch back to wireless, the Apple TV canNOT reconnect to the iMac. In other words, all the settings were correct because everything works fine with the wired Ethernet. The only change from one to the other is moving from wired to wireless. Everything then disappears.
What am I missing here? I would think that if the Apple TV didn't stream from other computers on the same wireless network, I would have found many people complaining about this or a tech article about it. There's got to be something obvious that I'm missing here but, for the life of me, I cannot find it.
Note that the same problem occurs if I try to stream from my MacBook or a Windows PC running the latest iTunes and wireless connected to the network (which I'm not really interested in doing because I don't keep any music on my MacBook or that Windows PC).
Many Different Macs   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Loyal Mac user since the SE/30

    Ken,
When you connect the ethernet cable to your Mac you are essentially bridging the wireless connection from the AppleTV and often eliminating: firewalls, encryption, authentication, and other settings for the wireless (radio) segment of your network.
The AppleTV is connected wirelessly to your router fine (you can easily test other connections from it w/ the iTunes previews). The Mac Pro is using the wired segment so it doesn't deal with the encryption and authentication methods used on the wireless segment. The MacBook (depending on model) may only be capable of G and there may be a hardware driver issue with the different Atheros models and the Broadcom chipsets. I've seen it happen w/ some N gear and not others (won't bore you w/ the details).
I have no problems streaming from different PCs and Macs wirelessly using different router combinations, provided you have adequate signal strength and connectivity you should be able to stream between machines and to the AppleTV wirelessly. It's worth testing bonjour/rendezvous and iTunes streaming between machines in addition to your working filesharing.
    Try the following:
    1) Turn off your network appliances and restart them from the gateway up.
    2) Set the security mode on your router to the highest level possible (radio)
2b) Lower the security mode on your router (radio)
-this will give you as much control over hardware incompatibilities that you can have short of changing the 802.11 compatibility mode.
    3) Check the firewall settings on your iMac and on your other machines.
    4) Check the firewall settings on your router.
-in the iTunes never sees AppleTV thread Jeffrey Lee states open 3689
    5) Test streaming from iTunes on one machine wirelessly to another.
    6) See jappl's solution (change channel of wireless in this case from 11 to 3)
I suspect you have a port issue where the numerical authentication is unable to pass through a firewall for your wireless devices. You may have a driver issue and that can often be remedied with the steps above.
A further thing to check is your router firmware. With N routers it's a good idea to upgrade the firmware for compatibility, but you always run the risk of bricking the router so people tend to be lazy and avoid performing such a task. If you can't get streaming to work between machines and try everything above look for a firmware update. Afterall, if your router doesn't do what you need it to do then bricking it with a firmware update won't put you out of business.
What happens if you plug the ethernet cable into your iMac, then share the airport connection from your iMac using the sharing tab?
Also, try giving your AppleTV and iMac IP's that are outside the assigned pool range (ex: if distributing 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.201, try 10.0.1.202). Your router may let you assign directly, which is often better. Check your machine names and change them to short lowercase names w/ no spaces or symbols.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Address book synchronising between several Macs

I have the address book for our company on a server. I would like to synchronise address books in both directions.
Example. Computer 1 changes an entry in the address book. I want this to than show up on the server and on computer 2. Same if Computer 2 would make a change.
Is this possible? Any tips as to how to do this?
I noted there is a sync possibility with a .Mac account. This we do not have. I am also not sure if it would be possible to do with a .Mac account, but would prefer a solution that would not involve a .Mac account.
    Any ides or suggestions?
    Thanks

Take a look at MySync. This application exactly replicates the .Mac Sync experience for all six data types without the requirement for a .Mac account:
    http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/mysync
It's a locally installed and controlled client-server—or, probably more correctly, master-slave—environment with support for Rendezvous and both intranet and internet-wide data transfers.

  • Can't find Laserwriter 4/600 on network from Intel Mac mini

Problem: Cannot find/print to networked LaserWriter using Airport network.
Kit: Mac mini 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB running Mac OS 10.4.5; Silver Apple Airport Base Station unExtreme; Netgear 814 combined switch/router/DSL modem; Asanté LocalTalk-to-Ethernet Adaptor; Apple LaserWriter 4/600PS.
Method: Airport bridges from wireless (Mac mini) side of network to wired (LaserWriter) side via hub/router.
This setup worked perfectly for many years but did not survive the encounter with Intel Mac mini.
Resolution attempted: Carried out detailed instructions involving switching devices off and on in strict order, using Printer Setup Utility etc.
These instructions are posted on Asanté website:
    http://www.asante.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3164
Getting this to work requires that the Ethernet connection be switched from AirPort to Built-in Ethernet and that the computer be physically connected to the hub by an ethernet cable. The unwanted effect of this is that it denies wireless access to network/internet services formerly enjoyed by Mac & PC computers.
Running the identical Asanté routine with AirPort rather than Built-in Ethernet as the connection method results in the loss of the LaserWriter to the network.
    Any ideas?

You can rest assured that printing to a AppleTalk
printer through wireless network is way down on the
list of things that is ever going to be tested in the
    labs.
Point taken. I'm just curious about what might be going on.
Since I can't test here - the only thing I can do is
think of possible differences between your two
    networks (wired and wireless)
I'm not an expert but as I understand it the Intel Mac mini should "see" the network as a single contiguous entity. In other words the AirPort Base Station that bridges between the wireless and the wired parts of the network should be entirely transparent, so I think the answer to your next question is yes.
Is your network flat (sameIP address range and routes
wireless as wired)? I could see issues if there were
a firewall or you had separate networks set up (you
can have different networks that talk to each other
through gateways and routing - but things like
Bonjour/Rendezvous and if my rusty memory is to be
trusted - Appletalk too - depends on things being in
the same "network" for broadcast packets to get to
    everyone.)
Again, I don't know if it proves anything but when I had another computer on network here, the IP address assigned to it by the router was within the specified range. This machine is getting on for three whole years old, has begun to self-destruct and so it's gone for repair under the last gasp of its AppleCare warranty extension.
The Intel Mac mini can also "see"/print to a Bonjour wireless printer. This may also answer your question about the possibility there being two networks here rather than one. On the other hand, I guess that the ability to print to the Bonjour device does not involve any bridging between the wireless and wired parts of the network, so this may not be relevant.
If the concept of different networks does not make
sense - open up the Network Utility application and
post the results of your "Display routing table
    information" from the netstat section...
Finally, here's what Network Utility, Netstat comes up with:

  • Cannot print wirelessly w iBook G3, D-Link router, Brother wireless printer

I am having problems printing wirelessly from an iBook G3.
The printer is a Brother HL-2170W printer. It is a wireless printer, designed to print wirelessly with 802.11 b/g interface.
My network is simple: Two Macs, a G4 Quicksilver and a G3 iBook 700, both connected via a 802.11b router (D-Link DI-614+). The Quicksilver is connected to the router via wired; the iBook is connected wirelessly via an original Airport card. I run OS 10.2.8 on both Macs.
The printer prints fine to the G4 Quicksilver either when connected directly to the Quicksilver or when connected to the Quicksilver via the wireless router's Ethernet port.
I can "force" it to print to the iBook by enabling print sharing on the Quicksilver, but the Quicksilver has to be awake continuously for this to work, and it is a pain. The problem appears to be how to configure Rendezvous printing to work with the iBook.
Can anyone please help? This is the second time I have requested help for this issue. Thank you.

Does the older OS X version in use support bonjour (aka rendezvous)
and was this hoped-for configuration working together wirelessly?
The printer's drivers may prefer a newer OS X version, too.
Does the printer's software give you a fairly good control panel or
printer utility access in your Mac OS X system? You may be able
to configure some aspects of the printer's wireless function... Or
you may need to install software in the computer that won't see
the printer as a wireless item. This is sometimes a gray area.
Newer drivers may address some concerns, but also may only
be available for newer OS X versions; so 10.2 may lack support.
The Brother web site offers a driver and basic instructions here:

I know the AirPort express and AirPort extreme models (earlier than
the current 802.11/n+g series) would work well with iBook G3 and
both Jaguar and Panther, to USB print over a local wi-fi network.
Perhaps some searching by appropriate words may find some
other discussions or user forums on this topic, here & elsewhere.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Conductor cannot setup MCU dial out to remote IP address ?

I am using TMS and setting up a conference with 2 internal endpoints and trying to add a third remote (traversal via VCS-E) by dialing the IP address only.
Conductor is used to setup the bridge call to MSE8000 8510 blade.
In TMS Conf Ctrol Centre, when adding the outgoing IP address participant, TMS says there is no route to IP addr.
The IP addr works when setting up the conference directly on the MCU, so the route is OK.
TMS is happy and the particapant will work when you add an '@' in front of the IP address.
Seems to me that there is an issue within TMS or Conductor where it does not like IP address dialing and only uses URIs.
This is a PITA to unknowing customers !
Has anybody else experienced this, or can provide a fix to this ?

If the MCU should only be using SIP that may make inefficient use of licensing as local H.323 MCU participants will eat up a traversal license. Not a huge issue, but something to take note of. Realizing my locals endpoints should all be SIP. (not entirely my choice :)
Up to now our setup is using Outlook integration where Conductor fires up the MCU conference. I believe Conductor is using it's CPL methods for that, and I also have Multiway working that way, as well as a few Rendezvous VMRs to test with.
From my reading it looks like the B2BUA is the new method to configure Rendezvous and Multiway.
I may turn off the MCUs H.323 registration and hopefully SIP calling will take over entirely for all MCU calls. Wish me luck !
Thank you for  your valuable input on this subject so far :)
    Much appreciated.
