Rented HD movie. Redownloading despite 48-hr countdown?

I rented Avatar from my Apple TV. It said it would be finished in 10 hours so I left it on overnight. Another family member didn't know what was wrong when they saw the screen and decided the smartest solution was to press random buttons on the remote to return to Netflix.
They accidentally started playing the movie and then stopped the playback and returned to netflix. The countdown says 43 hours left, but when we tried to play the movie tonight it says 8 hours remaining for the download... not fun.
Why did the movie play before, but after stopping must redownload? This was a bummer for the evening

Like many others I sucessfully downloaded and watched 2 movies via my new Apple TV but now have problems. I have tried to watch three other movies I rented and paid for only to find that when I hit "play" it says 'loading' and then that it will take many hours to download. Each time I go back the number of hours to download has expanded from say eight to 150! Crazy. Not happy. The fact that I had initial success suggests my system and speed are OK. Any suggestions please?

  • I rented a movie on my iPad. It downloaded fine but would only play 36 minutes, 5 seconds worth of the movie; although the time kept running for the length of the movie. Can this be fixed or do I need to get a refund?

    You can try a rest:
Reset iPad:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - If that does work, contact iTunes and request a redownload.  You can ask for a refund though.

  • TS3623 Rented iTunes movie not loading.

I have a new apple tv device. I rented a movie through iTunes however every time I go to watch it, I'm told there are xx number of minutes left to load. This number changes every time I check it but it is never fully loaded. The device is connected wirelessly and has full signal.
The number of days I have left to watch it has dropped to 13 despite not being able to start the movie
Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong?

If you only have 13 days left it sounds like you rented it 17 days ago.
You have 30 days to start watching, but once started you only get 24-48 hours to watch (US 24, UK 48)
Check your broadband speed at speedtest.net on a computer.
You need 2.5 Mbps for near instant playback of SD content, 6 Mbps for 720p HD contenet and 8 Mbps for 1080p HD content.
If your connection is slower then AppleTV predownloads/buffers enough of the movie to play it through without interruption (in tehory) - depending on the actual vs required speed this may take from a few mins to many hours or longer.
For example on 4 Mbps if I rent an HD 720p title, AppleTV need 30-40 mins to 'buffer' the stream.
The annoying thing with AppleTV2 and 3 is that if you navigate away from the 'loading' screen and use it for something else, the portion already downloaded is easily flushed from memory by using other AppleTV features - even just viewing a movie trailer.

  • If I rent a movie and I later I decide that I want to buy it, Am I going to need to download it once for the rental and a second time for the purchase?

I just wanted to know if I rent a movie and I later I decide that I want to buy it, Am I going to need to download it once for the rental and a second time for the purchase?

You will need to redownload it - rentals expire and are deleted, either 30 days after renting it, or 48 hours (24 hours if you are in the US) after starting to watch it, whichever is the soonest.

You cannot. It is not like a purchase.  You cannot redownload at all.

  • I rented a movie. It's not showing up in my video file. Only music videos are. How do I find it?

I rented a movie. I synced my computer and my iPad. The movie isn't anywhere on my iPad. I looked in videos, but the only tab at the top of the page is Music. No movie tab to click. Anyone know where the movie might be?

It's probably still on your computer.  Rental movies can't be synced like other videos since they can only exist on one device at a time, your computer or your iPad.  Connect your iPad to your computer and select the movies tab.  At the top of the page you'll see rented movies separate from purchased movies.  Select the movie you want and click the "Move" button.

See if that does the trick: I think there's a way for you to request a password for purchases, but still be logged in.

Rented movies downloaded to an Apple TV can't be transferred to any other device.

  • I have rented a movie in ITunes, however it does not show up in the movies on my ATV, but purchased movies do. What's up?

I have rented a movie through ITUNES, but it does not show up on my ATV movies menu as they have in the past in a category called rentals.  In fact that category isn't shown.  My purchased movies are showing up.  What's up?

A number of people have reported similar issues recently, many appear to have found a discrepancy of some kind in their account settings and making changes to these settings or simply resetting them has resolved the matter.
Check your account details are correct, check that you are using the correct details for Location, Region and Time Zone. You may want to change these settings and then change them back to see if that helps.
You might also try logging out of and then back into your iTunes account (Settings > iTunes Store > Apple ID’s > Sign Out) and restarting your router. (Some have reported that after doing this, they need to check for rentals even though it may report that there aren’t any, after which rentals once again appear in the ‘movies’ feature)
Rentals should appear under their own heading in the ‘Movies’ feature, you might also check at Settings > iTunes Store > Check For Rentals.

  • How do I rent SD movies on my 3rd Gen Apple TV?  I have changed the output resolution in Apple TV's setup to 720, but it didn't make any difference.

I returned my 14 month old 3rd Gen Apple TV to the Apple store today because it would no longer see my wireless network.  Apple said that because of this problem, it was still covered under warranty, and gave me a new one.  Took it home and went through all the setup screens.  Even downloaded the latest software update.  Everything else appears to be working fine, but I can't rent a movie in SD like I used to be able to.  Everything I've read says that the settings is where I change that, but the one setting that I did find and change, under audio and visual, made no difference.  What am I missing?
    Thanks!

This problem has been solved by me.  The settings under the Apple TV menu for audio/visual do adjust for the output to your screen either 1080 or 720, but don't have any effect on the iTunes purchases.
The solution is under the Apple TV menu option "iTunes Store".  There you can choose from 1080 HD, 720 HD or 720 SD.  Now my movie selections in iTunes do offer the SD option.

    Hi brett242424,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The movie would be in your iTunes library, in the Movies application.  However, if the rental period has expired, you may need to contact the iTunes Store Support about your situation:
