Rented movie keeps pausing

I've watched rental movies on AppleTV without problem until tonight.  Movie plays for maybe 5 minutes, then pauses with spinning icon to the left, some pauses are also 5 minutes (or more).
I haven't updated AppleTV software yet b/c last time I did, Apple had to replace my AppleTV, so I'm concerned about updating again.  My iTunes software is up-to-date, however (10.6.1)
Any suggestions?  It's pretty tough trying to watch a movie in 5-minute chunks.
Thanks.

This is a user forum, you are not addressing Apple.
The issue will be with your network so it would be best to rectify that. Below are some common things to check
- What is your current connection, use speedtest.net
- Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network)
- If on wifi try ethernet
- Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise

  • Unable to resume rented movies after pause

When I pause a downloaded movie rental I cannot resume the playback (after a minute pause or so). The video freezes on the frame where I paused it and the audio plays for about 5 seconds and then iTunes freezes. I restarted the system but I still cannot restart the movie. The rental period is still valid for 1 day and 21 hours. This happens consistently with any rented movie I'm trying to play on iTunes 9.0.1.8. I don't have any purchased movies to check if this is specific to rentals. It didn't happen with my previous version of iTunes (8.??). I have to purchase and download the movie again to watch the rest of it. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is this a reported bug?

I had the same problem. Rented 3 movies which I will have to see on my pc! When researching came across this article. http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/01/30/5g-ipod-movie-rental-limita tion-could-be-due-to-drm-sarbox

  • Movie Keeps Pausing?

I have an AppleTV that is connected to a Airport Extreme that is configured to 802.11n. I have a 6meg DSL Internet connection.
When I rent an HD movie on the Apple TV, I wait for the message to show that it is safe to start watching (it is about 5% complete). As I watch the movie, the movie pauses and has to download more before playing again. I thought that the download would stay ahead of the playing of the movie.
What can I do? Is there a setting that I can change so that this movie pausing stops?
    Kevin

Not much you can do. You sort of have to remember, your download speed may be fast, but not always consistant. Then it may not only be you, but the servers you are pulling from. It is just like streaming on the web...it will buffer then start (if you tell it to start) and it calculates based on the data it knew up to that point. When first starting to download it calculates out what it needs based on data rate, but once you start if later that data rate changes, you will catch up.
It is best not to start when it says you can start. Just wait a few more minutes. When my family is ready to rent, we rent, then take the time to go make snacks, get blankets etc, work out sitting arrangments etc. By that time it is well past where it said it is safe to begin. With that setup, we have never had an issue.

  • HT1657 My rented movie keeps stopping and not working, what's wrong with it?

I've just downloaded a rental movie to my iPad. The movie has stopped about 40 times in 3 mins. I move the cursor back slightly to rewind the movie and it plays again for a 10 seconds then stops... I have enough storage, any suggestions?

First thing I would try would be to remove the battery from your MacBook, connect the computer to it's power adapter and start up, then see if the keyboard and trackpad work normally. Some older batteries have been known to expand and interfere with keyboard and trackpad. If this works, replace the battery.
    Best of luck.

  • Rented movie freezes half-way through?

This has happened to me several times. A rented movie will pause about half-way through playing and then refuse to play any more. I ignored the problem before, but am working on a movie review for school and really need to get this fixed! There is no error message, the movie simply freezes and will not progress past a certain point.

    1. You can only download purchased movies again for free if you live in the U.S.
    2. Not all movies are available for free downloads a second time
    3. Only certain movie studios allow this

  • I tried to put a rented movie on my ipod touch and it kI tried to put a rented movie on my ipod touch and it keeps telling me that my computer is noteeps telling me that my computer is not authorized. But it is. I have other rentals on it. Why this movie?

I tried to put a rented movie on my ipod touch and it keeps saying that it can't be done because my computer is not authorized. However I have other rented movies on it.

Try deauthorizing and reauthorizing the computer.

  • I can't get the movie to play right, it keeps pausing and skipping

I bought a movie on itunes a when i try to watch it keeps pausing and skipping. how do i fix this, so i can watch it

Check in iTunes - got to the store home page with the small house icon.
On the right side of teh screen under QuickLinks is there a Purchased section?
If so check if this had Movies/Films when you click it, if so hopefully purchases will show up.  If you uncheck the box for HD downloads you may then be able to get the SD version.
Also in iTunes Preferences for the Store you can select preferred HD resolution of 720p or 1080p for downloading.
If you don't have a section for previous purchases contact iTunes support and tell them the issue.

I just started have this same/simmilar issue to.  Was there a solution to the original question?  I have 2 ATVs.  One works without issue, the other... kicks me out repeatedly... to the point where the content will load for about 3 sec before kicking me all the way out.  Tried all the trouble shooting options including: checking latest software update, reset, hard restart, and checking router download speed (over 50 Mbps on speedtest.net).  Should mention this occurs most frequently when downloading Netflix content, but the same issue occurs downloading other content like PBS.

  • HT204370 If I pause a rented movie and then try to resume play, I am told that the movie has not been downloaded and to go to iTunes in the menu and download it.  There is no download section showing and the search for rentals option produces nada...

When I pause a rented movie and then try and finish watching it, I am told that I have already rented this movie and it has not been downloaded.  I am instructed to go to iTunes on the AppleTv menu, but there is no download section on any menu and search for rentals only gives me a continuous spinning wheel?

The time it takes to load is dependent on your network. Rentals made on ATV won't be available on any other device.

  • My movie keeps on pausing every 30 seconds

My movie keeps on pausing every 30 seconds on my 32GB iPod Touch even though i am not doing anything. the movie is Harry Potter 7 Part 2

Try reseting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Does it play OK in iTunes on the computer?

  • Apple tv movie rental keeps pausing as if buffering every few seconds, started over and now says to lower the video res, what is up

apple tv movie rental keeps pausing as if buffering every few seconds, started over and now says to lower the video res, what is up

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...
