Rented movies don't appear in Front Row

There are archived posts on this from a year ago but nothing recent. I use a projector with a Mac for a home entertainment system and Front Row works well most of the time.
I just downloaded a rented movie which then appear in the Rented Movies folder of iTunes. When I start Front Row purchased movies appear in the Movies list but there is no sign of the rented movie. Front Row does not seem to be able to play rented movies. If this is the case then there is no point in me renting movies because I need to play them in iTunes, which gives poorer quality ("full screen" mode actually reduces the picture size to about one quarter of the screen).
iTunes 8.2.1, Front Row 2.1.7

I can play rented movies from iTunes on my iMac G5 screen but, as I reported, in "full screen" mode it is a quarter size - maybe a G5 quirk
Again, I would recommend you post in the iTunes forum. My iTunes does NOT display differently. You may be right, it may be a G5 thing, but you should find out for sure.
My solution is simple - I will not be renting any more movies from the iTunes Store.
You are not the first to request the ability to view rented iTunes movies in Front Row here in the Apple Discussions. I would suggest you send feedback to Apple. They do keep track of the requests:

  • Rented Movies not showing up in Front Row

So I was able to "rent" 300 from the iTunes store. I accepted all of the terms and agreements. The download starts. I go to Front Row and look under movies and there is no 300. There is also no section for "Rented Movies". Is this a mistake? Does the whole movie need to download before it will show up?

I'm having the same problem. I contacted Apple tech support about it through the response button on my itunes receipt. All I got was a link to other tech support pages with no relationship to the issue. I sent another complaint to the tech support link on one of those links and all I got was a response with more useless links. I'll give them credit for promptness, but they didn't even acknowledge the Front Row issue, let alone offer a fix. (And yes, I did update to the new Front Row that came out this week before trying the rental.)
Did Apple just blow it and forget to add rentals to Front Row? Tech support sure does seem to be in the dark.

  • ITunes Rental Movies Do Not Play in Front Row on Computer

Surely I cannot be the only person who would like to watch a rented iTunes movie on my computer using Front Row?
My iTunes library is on an external drive and when I open and browse Front Row, everything BUT the rented movies appear in my movie list. Purchased movies are there, video podcasts are there, home movies are there, just not the rented ones. Why is that?
I don't have an Apple TV, just a laptop an external drive and a desire to watch rented movies through an application designed to play ALL my media, not just select media.
And I haven't seen any info on Apple's website to indicate that rentals would not work with Front Row. And I do have all the latest Apple software updates.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) has access to your iTunes and iPhoto libraries without launching those applications. You're right, rented moves don't appear in Front Row and there have been a couple of Front Row updates since rented moves became available. The only thing I can think of is that the rental terms can't be enforced when the movie is played in Front Row instead of iTunes. For example, Front Row's access to your iTunes library is really read-only. You can't delete files, apply ratings or change any other settings on the files in your library through Front Row. I think the way iTunes handles rental movies, the file has to be updated with some kind of tag when you start to play it so iTunes knows how much longer you have to finish playing it. So, it's doubtful Front Row will be able to do this. I don't think Apple has ever made a statement one way or the other about this, it's just my opinion.

  • Selecting which Albums in Appear in  Front Row

    Hello All,
I like the idea that iPhoto albums appear in Front Row. However, as my list of albums grow, this could get hard to use. Is there any way to select which iPhoto albums appear in Front Row?
    Thanks in advance
    Kantron

Not that I know of. FR shows galleries, keepsakes, albums and slideshows. After the last import the albums are listed in the order that they are in the Albums section. Put those you want least at the bottom of that list. The same goes for galleries, keepsakes and slideshows.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later."

Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later.". Have been using the Apple TV for 2 weeks and everything else seems to work OK.  The Apple TV reports its SW is up to date.  I've tried this with two movies rented frim iTunes directly from the Apple TV.

If after you download the movie, you navigate away and do something else with your Apple TV the content you have downloaded will be overwritten and you'll need to download it again. It's a pain in the neck for many who have slow downloads but it's something that comes with using volatile memory rather than a hard drive for storage.
Perhaps you're not doing this, but I thought it worth mentioning.

  • Rented movies don't download

    rented movies don't download

Back up a sec;  you've got the rental tab in video, right?
Also the rental tab is enabled to begin with?

  • My rented movies don't show up after watching (within the 24 hour window) them in Apple TV

I have updated my Apple TV. Since then I'm unable to retrieve rented movies after watch parts of them in the 24 hour viewing window. Anyone have any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
A number of people have reported similar issues recently, many appear to have found a discrepancy of some kind in their account settings and making changes to these settings or simply resetting them has resolved the matter.
Check your account details are correct, check that you are using the correct details for Location, Region and Time Zone. You may want to change these settings and then change them back to see if that helps.
Also check your payment details, make sure your details are exactly how they appear on your credit card statement, you might also try changing some of those details, saving them and changing them back again.
You might also try logging out of and then back into your iTunes account (Settings > iTunes Store > Apple ID’s > Sign Out) and restarting your router. (Some have reported that after doing this, they need to check for rentals even though it may report that there aren’t any, after which rentals once again appear in the ‘movies’ feature)
Rentals should appear under their own heading in the ‘Movies’ feature, you might also check at Settings > iTunes Store > Check For Rentals.
At this point in time, I’m wondering if this could be related to (but not restricted to) the new feature that allows others to come into your home and use your Apple TV to download and play their content on your Apple TV without logging into their account on your Apple TV. The Terms of Use for iTunes Store content have always been to require you to only purchase and play the content from the store in the location where you live and to use a credit card registered in that location. Previously Apple seem to have been somewhat lenient on enforcing such restrictions, perhaps now they are not. However I don’t really have any evidence to support this suggestion, except that changes made to accounts in these areas do appear to be helping many.
If you are successful in resolving your problem, perhaps you would let us know exactly which action resolved the problem for you. If you are having this problem to begin with, can you also tell us your location.

  • Rentals don't work with Front Row?

I've upgraded to iTunes 9, and I have Front Row 2.1.7, so how come I can't see iTunes rentals in Front Row? Does it just not work for rentals?

You are correct, they don't work. Since Front Row has no dialog boxes or way to interact with the user (all of the controls must work with the Apple remote), I don't think there's any way for it to verify, the way iTunes does, if you want to initiate the rental movie. I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback (since there's no feedback for Front Row specifically) if you'd like to have rentals added to Front Row:

  • Photos and movies don't appear in Events/Photos but do appear in Last 12 months

Hello. I'm using the latest version of iPhoto 11 (9.1.1). When I browse through my photos via the Events or Photos section of the iPhoto sidebar (under Library), certain photos and movies are missing. They simply don't appear there at all. However, when I click the "Last 12 Months" section of the iPhoto sidebar (under Recent), the photos and movies are there. If I try re-importing the missing photos and movies I'm told they are duplicates, so they must be in my iPhoto Library - they just refuse to show up under Events or Photos! I've tried ticking all the rebuild options by holding down command and option when I start iPhoto, but to no avail. Perhaps there's a setting I've inadvertently ticked that hides certain photos and movies? Hidden Photos is ticked under the View menu. I have View > Sort Photos set to "By date" / "Ascending".
    Thanks for all your help!
    Cheers,
    Greg

since both last 12 months and events or photos are simply different views of the same photos in your library they are there - the most common issue is incorrect dates so you are looking in the wrong event - you can find the event by selecting the photo in the last 12 months view and and right clicking and using the show event command - you can correct the dates by selecting the photo and using the photos menu ==> adjust time/date command

  • Descriptions of Iphoto are not appearing in Front Row

I have several slideshows of photos in Iphoto. Those slideshow contains descriptions for certain photos.
When playing those slideshows via Front Row, the descriptions are not appearing.
Further, only the first track of music linked to those slideshows is playing and repeating its own, instead of going over to the 2nd and 3nd music partition.
Any idee how to solve those problems? Will Front row on the apple Tv or on the Mac mini show the same ?
    Many thanks.

First of all many thanks for your help.
In Iphoto, below on the left of the window, when you select an album, you see the title, the date and hour, the Key word, the type and size of the selected photo in the album. Below that is the 'description' that you can enter. This description is displayed in Iphoto when playing the photo show. This description is also transferred to Idvd, what means that it is possible to burn a Dvd to be watched on your Tv. Synchronizing the same album with the Ipod transfers the photos but not the description. And, in my opinion, there is no way to do it. Exporting the album gives the possibility to select the title and the key-word of the photo, but not the description. I tried this out, and unfortunately it is not working (only the title is transferred). Exporting the same album to as Web Page gives the possibility to select the description for export.
As I am eventually interested in the acquisition of a Apple Tv or a Mac Mini as Media center, I tried on my Imac to use Front Row in order to be sure that the 'description' of my photos will show on Tv as it is the case via a Dvd.
And in fact, the 'description' is not taken into account by Front row.
I hope that this long story is clear enough and that somebody has a solution.
    Thanks

  • Events do not appear in Front Row / Shared Photos

Events do not appear when launching Photos in Front Row, only Recent Viewed, Last Import, Web Galleries and Albums.
Doesn't it kind of defeats the purpose to have Events, which was implemented to make organizing easier and eradicate the large number of albums we usually had?

Yes, I think the Event implementation is lacking in a few areas. On the positive side, I noticed that iMovie and iDVD '08 allow you to browse Events and add them as slideshows.
Now all we need is for Apple to update FrontRow to support Events, and also update iTunes/iPod so that we can view our events on the iPod.
Although Events is a re-hashed "Film Rolls" feature, I believe that many people would be happy to group photos by Events, using Albums only rarely. If we can get full support for Events in other apps, then it would be great!

  • Movies don't appear on iPod

    Hi,
When I upload movies to my iPod, they don't appear. They even don't appear in iTunes. When I click on the movies-icon, iTunes doesn't show the files, but does show the space for movies used on the iPod.
I hope someone can help me with this strange problem.
      Windows XP   iPod

I have the same problem, I have the iPod 60GB, all my Movies and tv shows are now in the music list, this is the 3rd time it happens... I had to use an external program to extract all my movies from the ipod, then copy them back to the itunes library, erase the movies that are in the music list, and it's just ridiculous that i have to do this every time...
find the program, iPod Access... thats what i used

  • Rented Movies Don't Delete

I have rented 2 movies and watched them both. They should have autodeleted but haven't. When I go to the video menu, they both briefly appear and then disappear after a few seconds. When synching, the mememory occupied by video is shows that the movies are still on the iPhone.
Suggestions for recovering the space on the iPhone?

I have the same issue. The movie does not show up in iTunes or in the iPod interface on the phone, but it does appear on the iPhone IN ITUNES and it's clearly taking up a large chunk of storage.
OK. This is weird. While I was typing this the rented movie disappeared from the iPhone. The only thing I did was download and open an app called expod. But that didn't seem to see the movie.
    Very odd.

  • Rented movies don't go away???

I have a 3G iPhone. I've rented more than a half dozen movies from iTunes and they all played just fine. The problem is that for some reason, three of the movies still show up on the iPhone. Two of them are the first two movies I ever rented months ago. The third is one of two movies I rented almost two months ago. On my iPhone, I go to "iPod"; then "Videos"; the art work for the three movies still shows up under "Rented Movies". All three movies show "Invalid" after the titles. The most recent movie has a "blue-dot" next to the name. When I click on any of these titles, I get a message "This movie could not be played". Does anyone know why some rented movies are getting stuck on my iPhone while other disappear just fine? More importantly, does anyone know how to get these things off my iPhone?

Delete a video: In the videos list, swipe left or right over the video, then tap Delete.
However, they should have gone away when they expired. Have you restarted or reset your phone lately? That can fix a lot of problems.
Restart: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Rented movies are not appearing in Videos app

I rented 2 movies on my iPad and neither of them are showing up in the Videos app.
iTunes tells me I've already rented the movies but I can't find them anywhere on my iPad.
    Any ideas?

A long shot, but try restarting your iPad (hold down the Sleep button until you get the red "swipe to power off" button, do so, and start it back up). That sometimes gets the files to appear. If not, and no one else here has other suggestions, go here:
    iTunes Support
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.
    Regards.
