Renumbering Endnotes

Do anyone know of, or can point me in the right direction on a script which would renumber endnotes and endnote references.
For example I have 10 endnotes numberered 1 to 10
1 texttexttexttextex
2 textextextextextextexte
3 textextextextex
and in the actual job onlu reference which are superscript numbers (like footnotes)
so if one gets deleted or added I can then run the script which will look for the reference numbers and renumber them to be be in the correct number order.
Then renumber all the endnotes as well.

Try Teus' script to increase/decrease endnote numbers at:
http://www.teusdejong.nl/thome/ho_body5.html#scripts
That said, it errored out on me; have just emailed Teus to ask how to resolve it. :)

  • Renumber endnotes with a script?

    Hey,
I have a book in Indesign. Each document has endnotes. There are more than 3000 endnotes. Now the author wants to add/delete some endnotes.
How can i renumber the endnotes automatically with a script?
    Thanks for your information!

You may want to look at some of Peter Kahrel's scripts, found here: Dynamic endnotes, column notes, margin notes | Peter Kahrel. He provides some methods for making endnotes dynamic, for instance, that could be useful.
If you want to do it yourself, it depends on how your book is set up. Do you number notes straight through (moderately straightforward to script), or by section (much less straightforward to script)? Do you use distinct styles for your note markers in the text and your note numbers in the note itself?
Another option might be to export to IDML and renumber in the XML, then reimport; it really depends on where you're comfortable automating (InDesign via script or XML via text editor).

  • Word endnotes renumbering in CS4 problem

I'm using Indesign CS4, and importing a Word file which has Endnotes set to restart numbering at end of each section. But when I import the numbering does not restart. So, rather than having Chapter 1, notes 1-10; Chapter 2, notes 1-5, etc. The notes are numbering 1 through 126.
I've searched online for a couple hours and can't find a fix. I've resaved the Word file as a .docx. I've exported the Indesign file as an .inx and then tried reimporting.
I'm a book typesetter and I don't usually have this problem. Any ideas?

InDesign does not support endnotes (and by extension, endnote renumbering). It imports endnotes as plain text.
That said, it seems to me it's an error that ID does not take the original numbering into account, even though it is converted to text later on. I think your best bet is on converting the endnotes to plain text in the original Word document.
Alternatively, you could convert the "notes" to 'semi-endnotes', using cross references. Bob Bringhurst explains it all in his blog: http://blogs.adobe.com/indesigndocs/2009/03/endnotes_in_indesign_cs4.html -- nearing the bottom he points out a script to automate part of it.
[Post-Edit thought] That assumes, by the way, you can restart the cross reference numbering at will. I haven't checked these out enough to tell top-of-head.

  • Section endnotes renumbering

I am having trouble with endnote numbers in Pages (v2.0.1). I have a large document with several sections (chapters) each with its own set of endnotes. What I would like to have is each chapter range from 1–n, then restart at 1 for the next chapter/section. I can set the notes to "Use Document Endnotes" in the "Document" section of the inspector, and change "Numbering" to "Restarts for Each Section." Pages takes a moment and dutifully changes — stays that way a moment, then changes back! You can recreate this problem by opening a new document, put in text and footnote or two, put in section breaks, change to endnotes and numbering to “by section,” and the renumbering doesn’t “stick.” Any ideas or workarounds?
(I won’t even get into the inability to have a note that is greater to than a page is disconcerting, or that changes in the endnotes take a full 30 seconds to register. I’ll leave these for hopes for the upgrade.)

  • Problem with Endnotes/Footnotes renumbering themselves-

While I suspect this is a minor bug, it is still frustrating. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
I'm rewriting a rather lengthy document which uses endnotes (applies as well to footnotes mode). As I cut sections from previous version of the document and paste them into the new one, the endnote number acts peculiarly in terms of adding itself in correct order.
As I enter new references the endnote number assigns itself correctly (e.g. 5, 6, 7, etc.). When I cut and paste a previously used (and endnoted) text, the endnote first appears to be correct (e.g. 8), then jumps to another number (e.g. 27).
The only workaround I've found is to insert another endnote prior to the oddly acting number, copy and paste the reference, then go back and delete the oddly acting number.
I've noticed that even when I've done this, the new endnote number carries added spacing behind the superscripted number. If I try to delete the errant space, it deletes the endnote number. After I undo delete, the number changes from correct to an errant number.
    Thoughts?

These changes appear when I make any alteration to
the text in the area adjacent to the endnote
superscript. I do use a 3rd party input method (QIM),
but changing to another input method does not seem to
    affect this problem.
Pity. I'm afraid I'm not able to help you much further. As no one else has answered and most readers here seem to use European languages, my guess is that there is a bug when it comes to double byte scripts. I tried reproducing it myself using ITABC, but it worked fine in that test.
I don't see how fonts or the Account might affect this, but you may anyhow want to try to test from another account with a different font, to see if that changes anything.

  • How do I add footnotes/endnotes in Pages for iPad 2?

Hi everyone. Like many people I was super excited to be able to use my iPad 2 as a word processor with the Pages app. I have a macbook black from 2007 and it is extremely heavy to carry around everyone. I'm a graduate student so mobility for me is key.  Anyway, so I am writing an academic paper write now in Pages for iOS but I can't figure out how to add footnotes/endnotes to cite my sources. I can't find anything online relating to this topic. Can you tell me how to do this? I certainly hope Pages has this capability because without something so fundamental, how can it be the least bit useful? Thanks so much!

It is not built in, but you can at least create and edit footnotes (I do not use end notes, but from limited testing, it appears to work with endnotes as well but converts them to footnotes). It sounds complicated when you break it down into steps as I do below, but it really is easy and intuitive.
FIRST: The underlying concept. If you have the latest Pages for iPad, then when it imports a Word document it imports footnotes (and endnotes) and you can edit them.
With that in mind, here is how you can create footnotes on the iPad.
#1 In Word create a one short sentence shell text with a short footnote, like "See the cat run /fn1" "fn/1 The cat was black").
#2 Import that shell document into your iPad, say with email "open using Pages."
#3 Save that shell document as your sour dough starter so to speak.
#4 Now create your new Pages iPad document.
#5 When you are ready to create your FIRST new footnote, copy and paste the shell sentence with shell footnote from your saved starter shell document into your new iPages document.
#5. Edit the shell sentence and footnote to a real sentence and footnote in new document.
#6 Thereafter, as you add new footnotes, either copy / paste one from new document or shell and edit. You will see they renumber properly, even when moved.

  • How to import Word endnotes into InDesign CC 2014?

I have a 24-chapter book, written as one document in Word (Mac 2008), with 206 Endnotes that appear at the end of the document. When I break the book down by its chapters for layout in InDesign CC 2014, the Endnotes appear at the end of each chapter, not at the end of the book.
How can I place the Endnotes at the book's end while maintaining the text links and numbering system?

    Hi,
Unless I'm mistaken, ... and because I use 2 scripts [1 then 2] of very clever and prolific Peter Kahrel, I work with only one story! All the endnotes appear at the end of the book and they are always dynamic: if I add or delete one (call + text), they automatically renumber! Cool!

  • Why endnotes are far of control in ID4?

I designed a publication with endnotes.
Lately the writer forgot to insert a note (footnote) but ID4-6.04 Mac can't renumber , if i try using footnotes options menu ID just ignore it.
Id insert the new note but not in a sequence. You may choose any number, repeated if you like, but the sequence is lost.
Endnootes have lost all the properties usually found in footnotes. Id does not understand endnotes... Well, that is my presumption.
As I have 200 endnotes, renumber half of the them in the text is just a waste of time...(problem is note 99).
(Incredibly, the list of endnotes at the end of the book I formatted them numbered list and inserting or deleting are very easy...)
If controls are not available may be an script exists?
    Thanks.

  • Endnotes in CS3?

'Allo 'allo 'allo. Question: I typeset a document with endnotes (they were changed from footnotes in Word and then poured into InDesign pages). I am trying to get rid of one endnote reference, and have all the other endnotes re-number automatically. I highlight the reference number in the text and hit "delete," but no automatic re-numbering.
Am I doing something wrong, or does it not do automatic re-numbering for endnotes? PLEAAAAAASE tell me I'm doing something wrong. If I have to renumber all of these footnotes, I will be in a mood to SMITE!!!!

  • Can not use Endnote "manage citations" in Pages 5.0

    hello there,
Is ther any way to modify the citation format in Pages 5.0? My Pages 5.0 has a function "manage citations" in edit - endnote citations, but unfortunately, it can not be changed to a format that I prefer (such as Amecian Antiquity). can someone help me out?

Probably but I can'r be sure, because it may require you to have EndNote installed.
Do a search on EndNote plugin + Pages 5 and see what you come up with.
I read somewhere that Apple has created a plug-in but it has problems, otherwise you have to purchase a full copy from EndNote and as I said that is not cheap.
If you previously had Pages '09 it should be in your Applications/iWork folder. Try that and it should still be working.

  • Creating a PDF from Word, endnote links jump to wrong page

I have a Word file with a large number of endnotes.  In Acrobat 9.5.5 the endnote links jumped to the correct page.  In Acrobat XI, which I just upgraded to, all endnotes jump to the wrong page.  Somehow when converting the Word to PDF the calculation of what page to jump to is calculated incorrectly.  Is this a known problem?  I see other discussions on problems with endnotes but they are for different problems.  How can I resolve this.  I don't want to have to revert to Acrobat 9, but it worked.

Well I tried that.  I set the printer driver to Adobe PDF.  I then selected all text and hit F9 to refresh all links and saved the file and then went to the Acrobat tab to create the PDF version.  Using the application and importing the file to create a PDF causes the same result.  I can now see a pattern of what is happening.  This has a large number of endnotes, 525.  There are probably 30+ endnotes links per page.  I noticed that all the endnotes links for the first page that has the links all point to the second page of endnotes in the endnote section (strange that it starts with the second page and not the first), then all the endnote links of the next page point to the third page of endnotes and it continues that way until the end.
Another way to describe this is that the first page of endnote links should point to endnote pages 1 through 4 but they all point to page 2.
I checked and all the links in the Work doc are linking correctly.
I wonder if version XI has been rewritten since version 9 and my case is too extreme for this version and it chokes.  I'm trying to rebuild part of the file from scratch and see if the problem goes away since there is a lot of history to this file and it started at least at Word 2007.  I'm using Word 2013 now and have converted the format to the 2013 level.
I've sent in a bug report but have not heard anything and talked to customer service over chat but they don't seem to care enough to pass this to development even though it's easily reproducible.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How to remove blank pages after endnotes?

I am formatting an academic book, and am receiving each chapter separtely, piece by piece, and each chapter is a separate file. The author wants footnote numbers in the text, but wants the references to be formatted as combined endnotes at the end of the book (not footnotes at the bottom of the page). Each chapter's footnotes begins with #1. I have inserted the footnote numbers, and then gone to the end of the chapter/document and deleted the endnote text from that chapter. However, Word still thinks that the endnotes are there and won't let me delete the extra blank pages where the endnotes text once existed. I have tried going into "Normal" and then Footnoes and removing the "endnote spearater," as well as the "endnote continuation separater": this has removed the lines, but not the pages. Any ideas? Suggestions? What if I don't insert the endnote text at all in each chapter, but simply create a new document with the end of book endnotes - woudl this work? Thanks.

    HI Julie,
Are you asking about doing this in Microsoft Word? If so, a better place to ask would be the MS Word (Mac) forum at Microsoft's site. Click the link to get there directly.

Has anyone tried using Endnote X1 and Leopard? I can't open any files ("the document blabla couldn't be opened"), nor can I create a new library ("Failed to create library").
Anyone any ideas if this is fixable?

Fixed the problem. Originally I had no problems keeping the Endnote files wherever I liked, however it now only works with the Endnote files in Users/Library. A bit weird, but I can live with it.
