Reoccuring Unexpected Restarts

One of our G4 powerbooks is experiencing frequent unexpected restarts.
It happens everyday like this:
First, some of the applications unexpectedly quit. Then a black message box appears taht says: "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button several seconds or press the power button."
The message in the black box is repeated in French, then german, than japanese.
Any ideas?

Joseph,
That's a kernel panic. Since you have a problem with a PowerBook though, it'd be best to post in the PowerBook forum here.

  • Unexpected restart link with airport and keychain

    HI,
I experience some unexpected restart of my Mac book pro when it's inactive (and only when it's inactive). There is not a single line in the system.log or console.log that match the time of reboot. I didn't find a reproducible way of making it happening. Nevertheless, when airport cannot connect to a gateway because the signal is marginal and make an error seems to increase the probability to experience such a feature. I'm of course not talking about a kernel panic. There is not a single clue before the restart! The hardware testing provided by apple on Mac OS X DVD and with the apple care plan does not detect any issue.
On top of that it seems that when it starts to happen, it will happen any time you will reach the screensaver or lock the computer, if the screensaver is password protected. Switching of this option is usually not enought and according an other article of this forum, I added in ~?Library/preferences a com.apple.screensaver.plist with 0 value to askForPassword
Repairing the permission seems to help sometimes as well. But there is no key way of getting rid of it.
Moreover, from time to time the additionnal plist file I said is removed by another process (I'm the only user of my laptop and it happens several time). But still nothing reproducible.
I tried to mesure the temperature and log it, and it's not increasing at the time of the crash, on the contrary.
so any idea to fix, or at least to force a higher level of logging is welcome

OK, I came up with at least a "hack" to get me back up and running for the moment. I have another user account "test" on my powerbook that is pretty much a vanilla new account. Whilst reviewing what files had been changed during the upgrade I became fairly convinced some form of bad XML configuration parameter(s) in file(s) contained in ~user/Library/Preferences were behind the loss of network connectivity. I logged out, then logged back in as my "test" user and networking worked flawlessly which seems to confirm that indeed the problem lies not in shared system directories but in user configuration data. Anyhow I logged into my normal account (top right screen corner) whilst still logged into my test account and now networking remained enabled and operational.
I'll report back if I work out how to clean up this mess properly.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro Unexpectedly Restarts

My Macbook Pro has twice in two hours unexpectedly restarted it's self, both times I have been using Chrome. The crash report gives a different reason each time.
    MacBookPro8,2, Intel Core i7, 2.2 GHz, 8 GB
I have attached both crash logs.
As of right now I'm blaming Chrome. Any insight would be very appreciated.

Stop using Chrome and use Safari. Also, consider uninstalling the following:
Sophos AV software because it is not necessary. Restart after. Be sure you use their uninstaller or see:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • LR2 Vista 64 Unexpected Restart

I am running LR2 under Vista 64 Home Premium on a high end Intel E8400 PC with 8GB RAM, fast disk, 2 nVidia video cards, dual monitors, etc. At first, this combination ran with no issues. LR is awesome tom use on this machine--it flys.
However, into each life some rain must fall and in the past week, the program began having unexpected restarts. This seemed to be linked to user input. Leave it alone and it is fine. Start working and after a while you will get a restart. The timing varies--it could be sooner or later.
This PC is dedicated to LR, PS and my album software, FotoFusion. There's no e-mail or Office applications on it. But I do not have this problem in Photoshop or FotoFusion--I can work in those apps all day without a restart.
When it restarts, there really is no impact on me except time lost. Windows notices the abnormal shut down and asks if it sould restat normally or in safe mode, etc. My LR catalogs are on a solid state disk. They come up clean. My system disk is Intel Matrix RAID 1 mirrored. Those mirrored disks have to re-sync after an improper restart, but that doesn't affect my LR work.
So I dunno....this is inconvenient as hell, though thankfully there has been no data loss.
Anyone want to take a swing at this? Vista is up to date. Drivers are the latest. LR is current, or so it says. Whaere else can I look?

I am thinking I should try moving a test catalog and LR cache off of the SSD and see if the error persists.
I see what you mean about Windows SSD support, some info at this link:

Crazy one is, that a windows server 2012 R2 with MS Exchange 2013 SP1 (testserver) has also unexpected reboots, with the same error messages.
On the windows server 2008 r2 we have installed also KB2732595 but without success. The reboots stopping only after we had deinstall KB 2871997.
    Best Regards
    Christoph

    Yes, it's windows server 2008r2 SP1
    with KB 2871997
I have opened now a support case.
The server stopping rebooting, if on the "Network security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos Policy"
    -> RC4_HMAC_MD5
    AES256_HMAC_SHA1
    AES128_HMAC_SHA1
    Future encryption types
activated, without RC4, the server reboots. Special one is, RC4 Ciphers are deactived by registry.
If KB 2871997 is deinstalled, the server stopp reboots also without RC4.

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask

Any idea what might be going on?
    Thanks

I've had this happen twice, once with a CF and once with an SD. The first time was with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, and the other was with a Canon EOS 70D.
I DO use a WD external hard drive, but I don't think I ever installed the included software on my computer (I could be wrong, but it's certainly not there now). And in both cases, the drive was not connected to the computer at the time of the 'My Book' formatting and hadn't been for several days.
The only anomaly I can think of that might have something to do with a trigger is that (in the second case at least... I don't remember if this was the case the first time) the 'My Book' formatting happened the first time I put a card into the computer after the computer had been shut down for a few days.
FWIW, the first time it happened when the card was in an external card reader, and the second time it happened when a card was put into the computer's built-in SD slot.

    Hi nixt,
    How to read Crash Logs…
    http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.
While it can still can be HW such as Video Card, Airport, etc., If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Check System Preferences' Other row.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • After installing mavericks, my air unexpectedly restarts all the time?!

Updated to Mavericks yesterday and now my laptop force-restarts randomly every hour or so. Not cool! Apple, what is up?
My battery life is also draining quickly but I'm not sure if that's related to the shutdowns or the new OS.

    Hey, just a signal boost:
Same problem is happening. I've tried installing the update they provided (10.9.1) and nothing improved.
I've lost several college application essays and I'm sort of freaking out.
My pleas to Apple in the error reports have gone unanswered. I've been a faithful follower, Apple, please don't make me agree with my aggressively pro-PC friends!
    Anybody?
    Help?

  • Unexpected restarts on MacBook Pro 10.5.7

    Hi all,
I tried searching the forums but could not find anything matching my requests. I've been experiencing something strange on my MacBook Pro recently.
Basically after I use my laptop and return back to it approx 4-5hrs later I notice that it tried to shutdown automatically. However, this shutdown failed as some applications failed to terminate in time and so the laptop stayed powered on. The popup windows were visible for me to view and witness the event.
What I would like to know is where can I look to see what could be causing this.
I tried a fresh power cycle (restart) and still it persists.
Other than a clean reinstall I would like to know what application/OS task could be causing this restart request?
    Regards,
    Carl

Please call me Carl, need to change that sometime....
Anyway I'm not sure how shutting down applications and monitoring the activity monitor is going to help. The problem I have is sometime after a restart or power up some applications are trying to shutdown. Would be interested to know what I will learn from this...if an application does not shut down properly, is it likely to repeat this activity until it is shutdown correctly?
    Mainly transmission, ichat and safari.
I have in the past had problems shutting down my Mac and have seen apps like Mail and Safari refusing to quit (even after a forced quit).... Leaves my Mac in a hanging state.
Also sometimes my Mac takes a few attempts to come out of sleep mode after shutting the lid and opening it (this needs to be repeated until it works). The Genius in the store saw this happen and said I had to hit the power button to force a shutdown, but I insisted that if you persist it will come back out of sleep. Not this is entirely related but I thought I'd mention it.
So after a shutdown all night I will monitor the system today and see if it wants to shutdown or not. I have all my normal applications running, safari, firefox, itunes, yahoo!, ichat, skype, excel, mail, peer guardian..

  • IMAC unexpectedly restarts itself

I was updating an IPHONE 3G for my mother to use. During the update my IMAC began restarting itself constantly. I stopped the update on the IPHONE 3. Since then, my IMAC randomely restarts itself. I have tried turning it off, removing all cords, power, mouse, keyboard and then restarting after a minute or two. it seems to stop for a short period, but then begins again. HELP

    BDAqua wrote:
Have you tried just sleeping it at night?
It appears to be graphic card related.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
    Thanks very much for answering.
Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Unexpected restarts when deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates

    Hi
I am deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates via SCCM 2012 sp1 and have a couple of questions
    Question 1)
The updates are made available to clients at 9am on a Tuesday morning.  The users get notification that updates are available to install.  If the user doesn't install the updates, the client will wait 24hrs and then install the updates automatically.
We have set the restart behaviour to 24hrs, so again, the user will get a pop up saying that their machine will restart in 24hours.  In my testing I have seen no more pop ups appear until 15 minutes before a restart is due and then a window appears
with a count down of 15 minutes but I think this might be standard behaviour.  I am not sure why there are options in the client settings to remind users frequently about the impending installation of update but not of impending restarts.  The
reason we delay the restart by 24hrs is to give the users the chance to restart their machines over night.  Is there a way of providing more notifications of computer restarts ?  The User Experience in the deployment of the updates is set to
Display in software center and show all notifications.  We have Group Policy set to Not Configured for Windows Updates apart from the user policy
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to 0 - Do not show any notifications.
    Question 2)
Another issue we have is that we have client machines restarting without any warning at all.  I have tested setting the user experience to suppress restarts but have the issue regardless.  It appears that this happens if the client
is off when the deployment schedule reaches its deadline and the restart time is missed.  I had one user who did restart her machine because she was prompted to restart.  When the machine came back up it looked like it installed another update and
then just resarted without any warning.  This hasn't happened often but a one user was on a Lync call when the restart occured and she was not happy.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Daniel
I have done an RSOP on a VM I am testing and only have the user policy :
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to
0 - Do not show any notifications.
    And the machine policy :
Specify intranet Microsoft update service location which is set to
Enabled The GPO Name is Local Group Policy
    The policies look OK.
As a test I have deployed some updates and set the user experience to
Display all notifications and set the Suppress restarts
for both Servers and Workstations.  When I deploy the updates, I get notifications that the updates are installing (when the deadline is met) and then I get a prompt telling me that a restart is required.  I also get a windo letting me restart now
or I can ask to be reminded in x number of hours.  This seems like expected behaviour.  It does not force a restart.  However if I leave the VM on over night I come in the following day and can see it has restarted.  looking at the WindowsUpdate.log I
can see that at 3:15am the line AUInvoking reboot system.  It looks like Windows Updates and not SCCM is forcing the restart.
    Thanks

    Can Someone help me please

    JoshOhara,
if you run your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test from its grey Applications Install DVD, does it detect any problems with its hardware?

  • MBP unexpectedly restarts while watching full-screen video

For the past couple of weeks, every time (four times so far) I go to watch a movie on Netflix or a game on NBCSports.com in full screen (using either Safari or Camino), after some time (several minutes, not long) my MBP will suddenly shut off and then immediately restart as if nothing happened.
After the most recent incident, I ran an extended Hardware Test, but it came back clean.
Each shut off has occurred while my computer was connected to power.
Any idea what's going on? Thanks much.

    Hi,
As well as setting everything in System Preference > Notifications for Messages you can also state several things in the general Section of the Preferences for Messages.
The only sound you can now change (since the Alerts panel was removed in Messages 8) is the Messages received Sound.
The Choices are anything in in System Alerts and anything in your ~/Library/Sounds folder.
I have a few bars of a Jimi Hndrix track as mine.
    Open any Finder Window.
Use the Go Menu whilst holding down th ALT key
Select the Library that is added to the list.
    Navigate to Sounds folder.
Add sound that will be heard over the battle near the end of Iron Man 3
( you may need to work out the System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effect volume against the Master volume to be heard).
Back to the Preferences in Messages.
At the bottom is sa drop down for AppleScript.
One of the choices is Speak Events.
I have not tried this yet.

  • TS140 Unexpected Restarts

I am having issues with our server restarting every few days or so.  The strange thing is that I am getting e-mails from Window Server 2012 that the server restarts always at 30 minutes past the hour.  I am not sure if this is when the e-mails get automatically sent by Windows, or this is the actual time the server is crashing.
I have checked the Windows event logs, and I am not finding anything about the restarts in the logs.  I am guessing it is a hard reset.
This is obviously a serious issue, as I am using this server as a File server and also a Domain server.  I am not able to use an external hard drive to backup the server because of the known issue with these servers not booting with an external hard drive attached.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would advise you to call the help center. They will collect some logs from you and should be able to diagnose the issue and provide a solution. If they cannot, they will escalate the case to someone who can help.
The number to he help center is 1-800-426-7378.
