Reorganizing Bookmarks (Imported from IE)?!

I'm an ex-Internet Explorer user and I just installed Safari. All my bookmarks were automatically imported from IE - nice touch. One problem, though: I could never get several bookmarked folders in the right (alphabetical) order in IE and, of course, that's the order they were imported in by Safari.
In IE, there was an "Add/Organize" tool I could use to create and move folders around, but it didn't always work. (Hence the problem with out-of-order folders.)
Is there a similar tool, or some way I can move bookmarked folders around, in Safari? (I tried grabbing and moving them, but that didn't work out.)
Thanx.

Thanks, but that's where I was trying it: within "Show All Bookmarks". Doesn't work, at least not for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but all I'm doing is dragging & dropping ... except the "line" indicating where it'll be placed when I go to drop it (Folder C1, from my earlier example) isn't in between the two folders (Folder B & Folder C2). Instead, it lines up _square on_ Folder B and ends up a sub-folder of Folder B, instead of its own folder. (Maddening.)
I decided to start the slow, arduous task of re-saving bookmarks in Safari as I go: each time I open a bookmark from the "Imported Internet Explorer Favorites" folder (already created by Safari in the left panel), I'd create a folder of its own and make a "Safari" bookmark in it in the left panel, deleting the corresponding "Internet Explorer" bookmark.
Problem is, when I tried dragging the bookmark from the expanded "Imported Internet Explorer Favorites" (in the right panel) over to the new "Safari" folder (in the left panel), the bookmarked web site opens up and I can't do it. And all I'm doing is a single, left click, holding the left-mouse button down ... and it won't drag - it opens the site! (Maddening.)
Any suggestions?

  • How do I move bookmarks imported from internet explorer from the folder so they show when I click Bookmarks

The imported bookmarks are in a folder whereas if I create a new bookmark in Firefox it just appears when I click bookmarks. How please can I move the IE ones over?

Are they already in the Bookmarks Manager, or are you getting ready?
The Bookmarks Manager works just like the file browser on the computer.
Bookmarks (files) can be moved, or removed the same way.

    Hello JF.
I don't think that extension is supported. I believe Firefox can only read .json and .html.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • The bookmarks are not correctly imported from IE. before there was no problem, now only 4 folders instead of 15 folders. i didnt change any settings.

this problem started about 4 weeks ago. everything done like the instructions.

If you have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
That way you also preserve any sorting that you may have done in IE with the Favorites and the favorites won't end up in a "From Internet Explorer" folder, but will be appended at the end of the Bookmarks Menu folder.

  • When accessing favorites imported from IE8, duplicate links appear for those bookmarks on Google new tab page, while things I have bookmarked in Firefox appear normally, as a single link.

For several months now, I have had this issue. I'm not sure if this is an issue with Google Toolbar or Firefox, but I have uninstalled and re-installed the toolbar several times, and the same thing keeps happening when I access anything Imported from IE8. Anything I originally bookmark in Firefox appears as a single link on the Google new tab page, while my favorites from IE8 appears twice. Everything appears as normal in the Firefox Bookmarks menu. This doesn't seem to affect functionality in any way, but it is rather irritating at times. Is it possible it could be a bug in IE8? I'm curious to see if anyone knows of a solution to this issue. Any help or input is greatly appreciated. Has anyone else had this happen? I have the latest versions of Google Toolbar and Firefox, so far as I'm aware. Thanks, once again, for your time and input.

Thanks to jscher! With some help from AVG my AVG & Google browser panels now work OK. But I've taken the advice & disabled several extensions including the Disconnect. The browsers are still OK after re-launching them so I keep fingers crossed.
My original problem was that I had suddenly found a small popup window appearing, over the browser window, that I couldn't get rid of. It contained an advisory to the effect that Windows couldn't find the file popuptransparent[dot]xul. I tried searching for that to see what it was and in the course of doing that I seem to have executed it. Then was when the trouble started.
I have 3 instances of that file in my computer and would dearly like to get rid of them if they are of no use to me. Any advice there?

  • How do I import bookmarks etc. from Netscape 8 ?

My Netscape 8 browser would not load, and said it needed Firefox 3 or later to run. When I installed Firefox 4, it was set up independent of the Netscape program, but did not import any of the bookmarks etc. from the old browser. I am running Windows XP.

  • My bookmarks won't import from file... it may not be html

Open that file in a text program like Notepad or Wordpad and look at the beginning of that file.
A bookmarks backup JSON file will begin like this:
    <pre><nowiki>{"title":"","guid":"mJC706EZwTIU","id":1,"index":0,"dateAdded":1240105145406000,"lastModified":1328860824735000,"type":"text/x-moz-place-container","root":"placesRoot","children":[{"title":"Bookmarks Menu","
    </nowiki></pre>
JSON file needs to be restored; it will replace any existing bookmarks with the bookmarks in that file.
A bookmarks.html file that was exported (or from a different brand browser) will begin like this.
    <pre><nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
<!-- This is an automatically generated file.
It will be read and overwritten.
    DO NOT EDIT! -->
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
    <TITLE>Bookmarks</TITLE>
    <H1>Bookmarks Menu</H1>
    </nowiki></pre>
Bookmarks.HTML file needs to be imported; it will append any existing bookmarks - not replace any or all.

  • I saved my bookmark file from my old computer on a USB...How do I transfer them to Firefox on this new computer. I don't see an import option???

  • Can I click on "bookmarks" and have the drop down menu display ONLY the file imported from Safari?

I am trying to achieve a one click drop down menu without side selection for "Safari". Possibly I need to drag bookmarks and folders from the "Safari" folder into the "unsupported " folder, but when I tried this it doubled everything I drug in.

I did find that I could move bookmarks and folders out of the "imported from Safari" folder onto the "unsorted bookmarks" folder. Removed the Safari folder and made sure the "bookmarks menu" was empty, and then closed show all bookmarks. Hoping that when I opened Bookmarks from the very top line of Apple menu items, the only list that would pop down would be the one that I just constructed in "unsorted bookmarks". But alas, what pops down is no visible bookmarks. You have to slide down to "unsorted" which pops open a window offset to the right with what I really want to see, the list of bookmarks that I assembled in Unsorted.

  • I do not see the pictures to each website under Bookmarks, that I successfully imported from IE.

on IE8, in their Bookmarks, you will see a mini picture next the the website name. None of those pictures are currently showing in the Firefox Bookmarks, even though they all did successfully import from IE8.
Does your browser not allow for that , or is there some kind of add on or setting I need to include? Thank you.

Thank you very much. Both of you. The reloader took care of 75% of those favicons and visiting each site over time will do the rest. Thanks again.

  • Any way to trim off .url from bookmark name import from html?

why? checked bookmark.html from IE, no .url there.
