Repackaging VMware Thinapp

Hi, Please confirm whether it is possible to repackage Vmware Thinapp 4.7 using adminstudio. While I installed the exe, I am unable to launch the shortcut "Thinapp setup capture" in usermode. It shows "This Program is blocked by group Policy". So, Please confirm whether it is able to repackage Vmware thinapp 4.7.

As long as you have a valid SnS should you be allowed to repackage any existing projects with latest ThinApp version. If you have purchased ThinApp as a bundle with AdminStudio would I first start by asking them how to get your hands on the latest version..
The error message regarding GPO denying you running the application is not a ThinApp error message.. Are you sure the issue is not environmental?

we have a multilicense of Acrobat pro XI and we need to use it as thinapp on a vmware infrastructure.
I want to know if there is some issue with the licensing.

The only type of "thinapp" currently supported is Microsoft's AppV and then only for Adobe Adobe Reader 11.0.x and later.

They support other types of usage like WTS and Citrix but not VMWare.

Similar as in Software Virtualization? Sure.. Novell has ZENworks Application Virtualization (former Xenocode), Microsoft has App-V (former Softgrid) and so on..

My software can not create with thinapp for use in workspace

i have problem appear this error when i am create a software with thinapp for workspace for all of them i get this error when click on save

i readed that post but it was not usefull i do all of these steps on the other host and it work fine just on the other host my os is windows server 2008 r2 but on that machine which get eror my os is server 2008 r2 sp1

in addition when we create a software for workspcae with thinapp it have to create 4 files .dat , .alt , .msi , .exe but here when get error just create 3 file .alt can not create

Thinapp support

Good afternoon,
This is not about vSphere but it is a Vmware+Sap product question:   I think this is the right place for it...
We are a Vmware customer already:   our SAP runs on vSphere.    Now,    our IT dept are seriously looking at using Vmware Thinapp as our future platform for delivering software to the Windows 7 desktop. We are only a small affiliate but if this works here, who knows but it may get adopted elsewhere in the company.
Over in the Sap team we have 2 issues.
1. whether to run the very stable Gui 710 patch 18 which our users are on right now, or whether to go for 720. That decision will depend on how flakey that is next year, & the short support window for 710, & hopefully replies to this post.     How do other customers find Thinapp as a Sapgui platform?    What about BW Addon & Analyzer - any complications there?    Of course we plan to test all this as well but knowing other people's experience would be invaluable - cheers.
2, Support.   It's not yet certified for use with Sap according to Sap note 66971, but otherwise none the wiser! The note is very vague.      Does anyone at Vmware have any more detailed information about the track to certification?    & if so then for which versions of Sap gui?

We are working with the SAPGUI QA team to get thinapp with SAPGUI officially supported.
It is currently under test. We hope! that it will be supported in Q1/2011.
Since the testing is on SAPGUI 7.20 and 7.20 is likely the first version to be suported,
we recommend to go for that version.

Office 2000 Thinapp printing issues

Hi everyone,
I got some issues when I try to print (or open printer properties) on my Office 2000 Thinapp...an error is showed:
Error in English:
"Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try printing a Windows test page, make sure the printer is turned on and online or reinstall printer driver."
I get this error with all network printers (I can't try with a local one), package is running on a RDS 2008 R2 x64 (I get the same error on Windows 7 x64 but it works fine on a Windows XP SP3 x86).
Package features:
Program= Microsoft Office 2000
VMware Thinapp version= tried with both 4.7.3 and 5.1.0
isolation mode= tried with both Merged and WriteCopy
build OS= Windows XP Pro SP3 x86
installed components= Word (complete), Excel (complete), Access (complete)
removed components= Outlook, Power Point, Office assistant, Office Toolbar)
Solutions already tried:
-build package with different VMWare Thinapp versions (4.7.3 and 5.1.0)
-removed all printers (and its registry entries) before postscan process
-"%SystemSystem%\spool" and "%SystemSystem(x64)%\spool" attributes set to "Merged"

Try following:
Disable Wow64 by inserting option Wow64=0 under [BuildOptions]
Create directory called "Spool" under %SystemSystem(x64)% directory. In this directory create file called ##Attributes.ini and with following content:

Can't get past 10%

Hello,
I am trying to get up and running with ThinApp Factory, but cannot get it to virtualize one single application. For example, I am trying to thinapp an older version of Firefox (3.6). When I go through the motions of creating the package, the process immediately goes to 10% "Provisioning" and stays there, indefinitely. The machine I am using is not the fastest machine out there, but it should be able to do the work. It has 4GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU. 3.15GB are consistently in use when the process is running.
Here is the log file, which I cannot make heads or tales of:

5/10/13: I needed to get on with life and gave up. Using traditional ThinApp doesn't work too well either, though.

In general those cases where customizations fail, it is usually for the same reasons customizations fail in vsphere when using the customization wizards to create a VM form a template. Things like proper communications (DNS, DHCP, NTP, HTTP/S, etc.) are needed for the vm customization to work.
Aside from the above mentioned, check the following:
SYSPREP tools on vCenter - these are needed for XP VMs.
DHCP must be used for the Win VMs.
Static IPv4 address must be used for TAF.
Check vCenter logs for errors on the customization failures.

Send to E-Mail in Office 2007 Error

Hello Guys,
i have make a Thinapp of Notes 9 with Thinapp 5.1 and i have set it to default e-mail client in the package.ini.
Now i have a problem with sending a file from office 2007 to the e-Mail programm.
Office 2007 is local installed and NOT a thinapp.
When i made in in Windows right-click on a file/shortcut -> send-to -> e-mail, Notes 9 open a new e-Mail with the file/shortcut as attachment. Fine!!!
If i now go in word/excel/powerpoint go on the orange button -> sent-to -> e-mail i got following error Message:
"Notes 9 (VMware Thinapp) does not support MAPILogon.
Would you like to set the system default email programm to null? "
In one another application i got the same errormessage.
All other Application for example Adobe Reader work fine with the "sent to".
has someone an idea why it dont work?

Between i forget to say that when i close Word after i tried Send To i got an Error message
where he say that for perform the wanted process not assigned to an e-Mail programm.
I should install a e-Mailprogramm or set an assignment if a programm is installed.
And i had compare the mapi dll file from Notes and from Thinapp and in the dll File from Notes are more
functions than in the dll file from VMware. for Example has Notes the Functions Mapilogon and Mapilogonx
The Vmware Dll dont have mapilogonx.
Any ideas?

Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time.

So i've trying to deploy CS3 Design Standard in our enterprise environment. And one of the deployments, requires that i have to deploy ONLY the Adobe Acrobat Professional component of the CS3 package.
I run the install, and untick Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign etc......so JUST leaving Adobe Acrobat Professional. It installs fine, along with the Shared Components etc.
But when i run Adobe Acrobat Professional, it pops up saying:-
Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component (such as Adobe Photoshop) before launching Acrobat 8 Professional.
Now, as you can see i can't launch another suite component, as i've chosen not to install them. I'm assuming this is required so it can "register" itself. If this is working "by-design" then why does it let me install Adobe Acrobat Professional by itself, if i can't run it????

Simon = The rest of the CS3 package works great in a ThinApp package, doesn't seem to be any performance difference between install types. Plus you have the advantage of no extra registry keys or dll's floating into your system.
Peter = Thanks for the helpful comment, really helps me with this issue. And how is my installation of the product not "as designed".
Adobe give you the option of JUST installing Adobe Acrobat Professional, so if they allow this, surely it's BY DESIGN! The fact it doesn't work by itself means that Adobe should change their design to state the fact you need to install another suite product to allow it to work.
I've also tried packaging a standalone copy of Acrobat Reader Professional using VMWare ThinApp, but it does not work. And i've no problem with this, theres no real way to virtualize a device (i.e the Adobe PDF printer) so i'm fine with that.

Application dll hook with virtual application

Hello there,
We are trying to virtualize a anti-RSI application. This application uses a dll called hook.dll to check the number of keys you press on your keyboard. Is there a way to achieve the same connection between the virtual application as the example given on this page? (Virtualizing Wellnomics WorkPace with VMware ThinApp | Edwin Friesen - Application & Desktop Delivery).

Concise description of isolation modes

I am finding the documentation for ThinApp on isolation modes is a little confusing and seems a tad incomplete. I wanted to confirm on my understanding of isolation modes and fill in some gaps in my understanding as they relate to packages, the registry, and file folders.
Scope: Am I correct that all of the isolation modes (Full, Merged, and WriteCopy) can all be used in all of these places, and if not, which can be used where?
Package.ini - To set the defaults when not specified on the folder or registry key.
K_KEY.txt files* - For each registry key. Keys not specified default to ??? isolation, does it default to the package.ini setting?
##Attributes.ini files - For each folder inthe sandbox - Default to parent directory settings if not specified. Default to package.ini settings if not specified for top level folder?
Usage: Can you please confirm my understanding of each of the isolation modes and that they are applied the same way for both the registry and folders?
Full: Read and write from the sandbox only, do not access resources outside the virtual bubble for this item.
WriteCopy: Attempt reads from sandbox, but fall-back to the host machine if a key or folder doesn't exist. All writes go to the sandbox only.
Merged: Read from the sandbox if an entry is available, but fall-back to the host machine if a key or folder doesn't exist. No idea on the logic for writes.

ThinApp virtualization can provide separation of host file system and registry data from the virtualized application using sandbox folders.
The isolation mode setting controls the degree and behavior of separation. Using the wrong isolation mode can cause application or file changes to not be visible to other applications on the host.
Merged
System elements at this location are visible to the application. If a system element and virtual element exist at the same location, the application sees the virtual element.
Modifications to virtual elements go to the sandbox.
Modifications to system elements go to the system.
New elements are created on the system.
WriteCopy
System elements at this location are visible to the application. If a system element and virtual element exist at the same location, the application sees the virtual element.
Modifications to virtual elements go to the sandbox.
Modifications to system elements go to the sandbox.
New elements are created in the sandbox.
Full
System elements at this location are not visible to the application.
Modifications to virtual elements go to the sandbox.
System elements cannot be read or modified.

To change the isolation mode for a specific folder, edit the ##Attibutes.ini file in your package to set the mode for that folder, otherwise the setting in package.ini is used as the default for all the objects in the package. Edit the corresponding HKEY_XXXXXX.txt file to change the isolation mode for a registry branch. More details on these files are available in the VMware ThinApp User's Manual, version 4.0.1.
Note: ThinApp caches the isolation modes at runtime in the sandbox location. If the isolation mode is modified for your project and the executable file is rebuilt, it might be necessary to delete the sandbox for the changes to take effect.
DirectoryIsolationMode - Sets the isolation mode to Merged, WriteCopy, or Full.
ThinApp caches the isolation modes for the registry and the file system at runtime in the sandbox. If you change the isolation mode for the project and rebuild the executable file, you might need to delete the sandbox for the change to take effect.
Modifying Settings in the ##Attributes.ini File
The ##Attributes.ini file applies settings at the directory level while the Package.ini file applies settings at the overall application level.
For example, you can set the isolation mode at the directory or application level to determine which files and registry keys are visible and written by the virtual application you create. The granular setting in the ##Attributes.ini file overrides the overall Package.ini setting. The Package.ini setting determines the isolation mode only when ThinApp does not have ##Attributes.ini information.
If you need to compress only certain folders with large files rather than an entire application, you can compress files at the folder level with the CompressionType parameter in the ##Attributes.ini file.
The ##Attributes.ini file appears in most folders for the captured application. For example, the Attributes.ini file might be located in C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\Captures\Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3\%AppData%\##Attributes.ini. Use Notepad or another text editor to update the file.

Crystal Reports Runtime for specific language

Hi, we're deploying our applications using VMWare ThinApps and packaging the CRforVS2010 SP1 Runtime is 400 Mb!
I saw that many DLLs were 'duplicated' for each language so I was wondering if there were a lighter runtime for just english, or just french.

Installation folder for per user

Hello,
We use VMware Thinapp to install some programs with a MSI. We have a user collection to deploy the app and therefore install for a user. The SCCM installs the MSI to the APPDATA folder which is the roaming folder in the user profile. We use roaming profiles
and to prevent big profiles we would like to change the installation directory to LOCALAPPDATA, which is the LOCAL folder in the profile.
Is there a way to overwrite the standard installation location for a MSI using a command switch?

ConfigMgr doesn't apply any magic to the installation of a MSI. If the MSI is configured to install in certain directories then there isn't anything that ConfigMgr can do outside the normal MSI command line properties.

Module failed IE6 in Windows 7 x64

I have a virtual Internet Explorer 6 running in Windows 7 x64, the application worked good but yesterday Windows display the message IE6.exe is not responding. when i look the event viewer the message said: the application IE6.exe is not responding. the path of module errors C\Windows\SySWoW64\nt0_dll.dll is fail. I find in the another Windows 7 x64.
I try find the nt0_dll.dll in others PC but i can´t find them. please can you help me?
