Repair account for my mac

I might need to send my MacBook Pro in for some repair service soon.  I'm not willing to give others access to my main account but the Apple folks told me they would likely need some account they could access just to boot the machine.
What might be the best way to go about setting up a generic account where access to my main account or any of its files would not be possible???
To enable the Guest User account that came on the machine by default but is, by default, turned off???  I'm not sure that would be an acceptable account for them to use but I don't actually know that??
Or how about just setting up another separate, normal account but not with Admin privileges???  The options shown for a new account are
Administrator
Standard
Managed with Parental Controls
Sharing Only
Group
I don't use File Vault, by the way.
If you had to turn your mac over to unknown folks where they might need a login account and where you wanted to ensure they couldn't access your files under your main account, how would you do it??
thanks

The possible repair issue I am facing comes from an event that occurred two nights ago when the trackpad and keyboard stopped.  I was able to RESTART by using an external mouse but when it restarted the problem was still there because I couldn't even login because the keyboard was dead (hadn't known it was more than just the trackpad until that moment).  So then I was really stuck but fortunately, the power key (the upper right most key on this newer macbook pro (early 2013) did continue to work.  I held down that key until the machine shutdown.  Then I used the same key to restart.  On restart, the trackpad and keyboard worked again and have since.  I took it to the Apple Genius folks and they only guessed it might be a soon to fail trackpad.  I wasn't willing to give it over for just the reasons discussed above so since I've been pondering what to do NOW in case the same event should happen again and powering down and back up won't get me back in business.  If that occurred, I wouldn't even be able to go in to erase the solid state (glued in) drive.  That was my reason for even consdering setting up another account now such that if I sent it in non-functional, after Apple fixed it, at least they'd already have an account I would allow them to use to boot the machine after they fixed whatever hardware problem might have been discovered.  But I'm not at all convinced it is hardware.  I've found a number of posts where folks have had similar issues since moving to Maverick.  I'm there too...
The bottom line is cleaning the drive would be my choice but I just might not have that option available.  Should I perhaps consider using File Vault???  I use encrypted sparse disk images and I have confidence in them.  Is File Vault the same but just for the entire drive instead of just selected files???
thanks... bob...

  • Can't set up iCloud account for second Mac account

I set up an iCloud account for myself back when the service was first introduced.  Today I went to my wife's login on our iMac and tried to set up an account for her.  From within System Preferences -> iCloud, I selected "Create an Apple ID..."  A little message drops down saying "This device is no longer eligible for a free iCloud account."
I thought that separate login accounts on a single Mac could have their own iCloud accounts.  Is that wrong?
It's also possible that I set up multiple accounts under my own login back when I was first setting things up.  I am one of those with multiple Apple IDs, and was confused about exactly how I was supposed to handle that, so I am pretty sure that I set up at least 2 iCloud accounts under my login on our computer.  If I have too many iCloud accounts, is there a way to find out what they are and get rid of the unnecessary ones?

You can create and use different iCloud accounts on the same computer, whether they are single or multiple user.
There is a limit of 3 accounts you can create from a device but I thought this was only iOS devices - maybe not.
iCloud accounts can only be created using a valid email address, so I guess I'd start there to retrace what accounts you have.
My Apple ID and iForgot.com may be useful sites for you.

  • 1 computer, 3 Mac OS user accounts, iTunes account for each Mac OS user, authorization problems

We have 4 computers for 3 people in our household: 1 iMac (recently purchased), 1 MacBook Pro, and 2 MacBooks. We were previously running off of just the MacBooks (1 for each person), but we decided to buy the iMac and use it as a hub for all of our pictures, music, movies, etc. We were sold on this idea after learning about the "Automatic Downloads" feature, where all content would 'just sync'. We each have a separate Mac OS user account on the iMac, with our own separate content libraries. We each have a separate iTunes/AppStore account. It seems like a good idea until...
When I tried to turn on Automatic Downloads in iTunes on my iMac, I got this message: "You can auto-download purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. You cannot associate this computer with a different Apple ID for 87 days". I tried to turn on Automatic Downloads on my MacBook Pro, when I got this message: "You can auto-download purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. You cannot associate this computer with a different Apple ID for 90 days". I did not necessarily want to download the apps/music/books to this computer anyways, as the reason we bought the iMac was to serve as a hub for all of this content, but it was still frustrating to see that message.
I have tried everything suggested on the authorization troubleshooting pages and forums (e.g., authorizing, de-authorizing and de-athourizing all, and reauthorizing), but I have not had any success. I have contacted Apple several times, but I get tips on how to ensure that I have the most up-to-date version of iTunes on my computer, or how to manually download pre-purchased content. I will not begin to explain how frustrating these low-level responses are when the issue is much larger.
I have a few theories of why this is happening, one of which is that we will only be able to authorize one of the users iTunes accounts to this iMac (despite the fact that we are using separate Mac OS user accounts). This may be the case if iTunes authorization identifies or registers the computer based on its serial number (or some other unique identifier), rather than the Mac OS user account. If that is the case, then I suspect that purchasing this iMac as an automatic download hub for 3 separate Mac OS users was pointless, and I will gleefully warn anyone away from trying to do that.
So my question(s) read(s): How does iTunes account authorization identify/register with the computer? Is it authorized to the computer serial number, or could it be authorized to a Mac OS user account?
However, if my above theory is true, then my question is: Do I have any other options?
    Thanks!

I just had this problem because I logged into a friend's account on the computer I'm on now, and used the Previous Purchases feature. Well, that in turn deactived my use of the iCloud and iTunes Match on this computer when I signed back into my personal iTunes account. iTunes Support was no help, they just gave me a scripted response I would find online myself. Tried many different things, but what actually worked, was changing the Computer Name on this computer, and rebooting. Now, iTunes recoginzes this computer as a new device, yet, still is one of the 2 authorized computers on my iTunes account. Try changing the Computer Name on your troubled machine, then try associating it once again, see how that works out for you.

  • HT201240 change the email account for the mac

i used the wrong email for my new mac

To change iCloud accounts you have to go to Settings>iCloud, sign out, then sign back in with your other ID to create your new account.  If you want to migrate a copy of the iCloud data to the new account, start by saving any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save Image.  If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out, choose Keep on My iPhone and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone when prompted.  Then sign back in with your new Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload the data to your new account.  Once you are on a separate account you can go to iCloud.com and delete your husband's data from your account (and he can do the same with yours).
Just be aware that the current @icloud.com email address cannot be moved to the new account, nor can the current my photo stream album (which is why you need to save any my photo stream photos you want to keep to your iPhone before signing out of the existing account).

  • Using the same account for multiple Macs?

I have two Macs at home that I download apps to with my personal account and I also have an iMac and MBP from work that I want to start downloading apps to. Should I use my existing personal account or should I create a new account? Does it make a difference if I download 4 copies of the same free app to 4 different macs?
    Thanks.

Does it make a difference if I download 4 copies of the same free app to 4 different macs?
No as long as you use the same Apple ID they were purchased wtih.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
If you create another account, it's sure to cause confusion.
You may want to backup your purchases >  Mac App Store: Backing up your app purchases

  • Can we have the same iCloud account for 2 Macs, 2 iPhones and an iPad?

My partner and I each have an iMac and an iPhone, and we have an iPad which we both use. It suits us to have a single iCloud account because we share all calendars and contacts.
However, we're about to upgrade our iPhones and I've read that if both the old and the new device has iOS 5 or later, the data transfer should be done via iCloud. Please can anyone tell me if 2 iPhones can be backed up to iCloud (currently they're backed up to the iMacs) without causing difficulty? Each phone has a different name attached to it, so I guess it may be OK if they're done one at a time. Or maybe it's OK to do the data transfer via iTunes, even though the iOS is 6.1.6...?
    With thanks.

    Hello Gillylal Fordham-Lear,
This can be done via iTunes or iCloud, as detailed in the article linked below.

  • How do I set up different icloud accounts for each family member and make them able to access them on our common mac using their user name on the mac.  I am doing this to make sure kids don't get access to our messages.

We have several apple products in the family.  I would like to set up different icloud accounts for each memeber.  I lately noticed having activated different devices with same icloud account that each device can access everyones messages by going in their settings and clicking which number or email they want to use to see messages.  Let me make sure I am understood, on my sons ipod in his messages settings he can switch to my cell number and see all my messages.  Re setting the devices isn't my great issue but can i set up each kids user account on my mac to their individual icloud accounts?
    Thanks!

Any devices connected to the same icloud account can sync all the data on that account.  For this reason an icloud account is really for a single user.
On a mac, if each user has their own account, then the itunes for that mac account should be set up to connect to that user's icloud account (System preferences>icloud).

  • Can two user accounts of one computer use two different Mac ID accounts?  I'd like to keep separate accounts for movies, music etc.

I have a Mac Air running 10.8.5, with two users on it.  I'd like to keep separate Apple store accounts accounts for the two users, as we have separate music, movies, books etc.  To date, we've had separate computers, but now will share the one computer.  But when the second account is signed in and we try to sign in to the I-tunes store, or authorise the computer with the second account, the response is "the I-Tunes store is not available" or "we cannot fulfil your request at this time".  Togetherness is nice, but I'd prefer to have some privacy.

    Hi Harrike2000,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an iTunes Store connection issue in one of the user accounts on your MacBook Air, and you want to know if the issue is related to using multiple Apple IDs or user accounts.
You can use multiple user accounts and Apple IDs with one computer, see this article for more information:

For the issue connecting to the iTunes Store, try the suggestions in the article linked below.

If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes and Safari to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. Follow these steps to configure your firewall.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Learn how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.

ctrl B makes the top bar (File. Edit. View. Controls. Store. Help.) appear and disappear.
ctrl S makes a side bar appear on the left side of iTunes. It shows the library which has Music. Movies. TV Shows. Apps. Playlists. Ect.
When I did the steps you suggested, my iPhone did not show up in that list.
I checked my firewall settings again, and they seem to be okay. My firewall is the only thing that I am not 100% sure of. If I go to Control Pannel>System and Security>Windows Firewall>Allow an app through Windows Firewall. It shows that iTunes is allowed. I'm not sure if something else might need to be allowed as well though. I have a few Remote options that are not allowed such as, Remote Event Log Management, Remote Scheduled Tasks Management, Remote Shutdown, Remote Volume Management, and Routing and Remote Access. I'm not sure if any of these need to be allowed or not, or if they are even affiliated with iTunes.

You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours.  If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for).  You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content.

    Hi,
At one time only Email IDs from Apple (when it was just @Mac.com) were referred to as "Apple IDs"
Other IDs such as to log in to Discussions were know as Discussion IDs
Things like the Online Store and iTunes and Apple realising that people would prefer one ID to have access to Everything tended to move things together.
There can be a variety of combos now

MY wife has an Iphone 4  and I have a 5. To date we have used one apple account to manage music purchases/library. I updated ny phone to the new OS version and all her texting is showing up on my phone.  I understand if i create an apple account for her I will not see her texts. Recently we bought a Mac and created a new apple account for her. How do I synched her phone with new apple account and get access to the music library under my account on the new MAC laptop  before I update her phone to the new OS?
Going forward if I purchase music under my apple id and want her to have it on her device, how can I acheive that?

You can continue to share an Apple ID for purchases.
Sign her in to her new account here:
Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (Keep on Phone if you want to transfer contacts, calendars, etc...) then sign in with her new ID
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID > Sign out then in with new
