Repair camera or buy new?

During a holiday trip to Italy, my trusty old Panasonic NV-DS38 PAL mini-DV camera broke down. It's from 2001 and it seems as it's the tape mechanims. It seems as it can't pull the tape out of the cartridge. Yes, I tried cleaning it and I tried several different tapes.
Now, how much better is a 2007 model compared to a 2001 model?
Or, in other words, should I repair it or buy new?
It must be a miniDV camera as I have loads of tapes. I have no need for HDV as I don't have a blu-ray burner or player and I don't have a HD-TV.
My camera has 15x optical zoom that I like.
It has digital picture stabilization (that doesn't work when zooming or panning).
It has analog in- and output.
I also have a wide angle adapter that's really useful indoors.
It also has decent low light capability.
So, what is your opinion?

What about low light capability on 1-CCD vs 3-CCD? Which is best?
there's no generic answer on that, cause:
it depends on optics of camera and of size of ccd.. you should use guides as camcorderinfo.com, which provide indepth info on that.. some camcorders shout '3cdd!' but with small chips.. = due to the process of 'splitting' the incoming light, some show noticable 'noise' under low light conditions.. so, a good 1ccd could offer better pic quality than a cheapo 3ccd ...
so, if 3ccd, then 'full size' ccd... as the Pana gs400 I mentioned above ...
if you do not need analog-in, there's a very wide range of products... I like to 'touch' such devices, wether my fingers find all knobs&switches... when I bought my Sony (I like Sony, excellent quality, Zeiss opttics, Stamina battery management etc) , the other competitor was a very small Panasonic.. would be my 'shirt pocket' camcorder... finally too small for my hands..
and, it depends on your needs of 'manual control', some devices offer a 'focus ring' as on old film cameras, other allow settings only on touchscreens... free white balance?
do you need ext. mic input?
If I had to buy a new one, I would look only for optics, lenses + full size 3 ccd...
... and, after winning the lottery, that HiDef AVCHD HDD-JVC thingie..

  • Is it better to get an ipod repaired or just buy new?  Want the most cost effective solution.

I have an Ipod Classic and a Nano that have issues. The Classic headphone jack does not work. The Nano only show the white Apple screen. These belong to my daughter who is very hard on her electronics.she is a runner and a gym rat.  Would it be worth is to have them repaired or just to replace. she has a birthday and Christmas coming up. Will the Apple store people be able to give me a reasonable answer without pressuring me into buying?
    Thanks for the advice.

Cost of repair is going to depend on whether you have Apple do the repair or a third party service. Here is a list of Apple repair costs for the different generations and models of iPods.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that Apple doesn't actually fix the device, but instead does an out of warranty exchange for an iPod of the same model, capacity, and generation for a flat fee.
For third party service pricing, you'll need to do some of your own research.  Just Google "iPod repair" and you should get back a plethora of results to work through.  From there you can decide whether to go the repair or replacement route.

If you bought the iPhone from an authorized store/vendor, you should have taken the iPhone to them or any other Apple Store for evaluation under warranty.
Once it has been opened by non-Apple entity, Apple will not do anything for this.

  • If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this.

The DVD recorder I'm referring to is one I've use for years. It is not attached to my aging iMac in any way. I simply play the video from my camcorder (mini-dv tape based Canon HV20)  into the DVD recorder and create a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. I can only do minimum editing so what goes in is what I get. This has been fine for creating dupes of the various things I shoot.
If I buy a new iMac (21 inch), I'd like to be able to download the video to the iMac through iMovie, work with it to whatever degree I wish, and burn it to a DVD that can also be played in any DVD player -- or to use as a master to dupe copies.
What I'm understanding from you and others is that this would be possible if Apple had included iDVD in the software that comes with the iMac, or if I purchase the iLife Family Pack, or buy the correct version of Toast. I'm hoping I can persuade Apple to sell me an iMac with iDVD installed.
Essentially I want to move from a basic process of creating DVD copies to the more sophisticated process of creating one from an iMac.
Thank you again for your help and wisdom.

  • Repair vs Buy new?

My 2009 MacBookPro 17" was the recent victim of water damage (due to my cat). The repair shop quoted me at over $1000 to replace the components damaged (pretty much only the harddrive was saved). I'm debating repairing it versus buying a new one...specifically the 13" MacBook Pro with retina display 2.4 GHz with the 8GB RAM and 256GB flash storage(($1549). Any advice? I'm worrried I would notice a difference with the speed and storage as I am pretty sure my old MacBook has a 2.6 processor and 320 GB harddrive (which it sounds like they now use flash storage instead).
    Thanks
Also if I did decide to buy new can they completely remove my information off the old machine?

I have a 2010 17 in MBP that I use as my home computer and a 13 in 2012 MBP for work purposes .... I find that 13 in screen just too small for my photo work and other recreational use.  I sure wouldn't spend a grand to fix the 2010 MBP when it goes, but I am gonna cry buckets and then try to get used to 15 in screen.
Your repair shop CAN completely erase your Hard Drive but you will not know that they have done this really.  If it was me, I would ask them to return the HD to me and forget about getting money for it.  You can always put it in a case to use as an external~
As to how much your damaged MBP is worth, you can look on eBay and get a sense of what people are asking.

  • Buying New Imac 27 inch

    Hi all
I am looking for input into what Imac i should get, at the moment i have a Imac 24 inch but its getting old and I need to get a new one so here is what i need it for.
I use my desktop mostly for photography and I use Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 I will not use it to play games but the photos I import from my camera is 36 million pixels at a time, I also use it for Skype and Facetime also all my music.
Hope I have explained enough and I only use the computer to do my hobbies but dont know the ins and outs of them so the more help I get the better it will be
    Thanks to all in advance

Just about any 27" will work, if you are buying new (refurbs are available) I'd recommend getting a Fusion drive to improve performance. I'd also recommend upgrading the RAM to 16GB or more.  You can easily upgrade the RAM yourself, buy from a reliable source such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.
Also when the new machine arrives,  you will be using Setup Assistant, remember to migrate from your old iMac to the new one. Use your Time Machine or bootable clone backup to do this. Instructions can be found at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html
Good luck and enjoy your new machine.

  • My iphone 5 has been accidentally put in washing machine iv dried it out but the screen has water behind the glass i don't know what to do replace the screen or buy new phone help

my iphone 5 has been put in washing machine by accident and i have dried it out it works but there is water behind screen pleasehelp dont know what to do i can repair would it be best to buy new screen
    HELP!!!!

It is likely that the device has unrepairable harm done to it having it washed in the washing machine. However, one thing that could be tried would be to have the device placed in a glad bag full of un-cooked rice and leave it there for 72 hours to see if this will absorb residual moisture showing up on the display glass. It could be assumed that if there is that much moisture showing it's unlikely attempting to draw out moisture will be sucessful.
    Good luck.

  • Have to buy new charger for Satellite C660

My charger is not working and I have to buy new one. But I have one question: on the Toshiba site it says, that my charger is:
    PA3822E-1AC3
    AC Adaptor - 19V DC, 2.37A, 45W, 3-pin.
But my laptop ( C660-1M2) came with 60W, 2-pin adaptor. Is that all right? On the back side of the laptop I found only these numbers: 19V ---- 3.95 A.
What kind of charger should I buy?
Can I get for example 60W one, is this better than 45W? I suppose it has to be 19V and same plug, but I have no idea about other things.

    Thank you.
I found the info about these weird numbers by my own lol (I have no idea about electronics).

  • Where I buy new blackberry phone?

    Hi,
I wanted to buy new z10 and today I went to the authorized blackberry shop in kalyan W Mumbai, India. And I shocked after getting information about blackberry product. I came to know that blackberry has stopped manufacturing new phones and there is shortage of phones in the market hence those shops Don't have blackberry, even I had gone to 4-5 wellknown shops in kalyan to buy. Same answer I got even from them. I'm really disappointed after hearing this.
Please can anyone tell me where Z10 is available in Mumbai?

    Hello,
Unless some other volunteer here happens to work for the distribution channels that support your region, it is highly unlikely that anyone will be able to actually give you an answer. The answer to your question requires "insider knowledge", and such is typically restricted from being revealed here in this user-to-user community. But...
    nishantpotdar wrote:

That is not at all accurate, so I would not trust those who told you that. BB continues to manufacture, either directly or outsourced via the various companies they have publicly revealed as having partnerships with. So that statement is simply false. It is sad that so many shops told you the same thing...perhaps they all receive their devices from the same distributor, and perhaps that distributor is not telling them the truth. There is no way for us to know...all we can do is guess.
    Good luck!

  • The most cost-effective long-term solution, Upgrade or Buy Newer Computer?

I am looking for the most cost-effective long term solution for me as an self-employed interior designer. I need help making a decision: Is it reasonable to upgrade my iBook G4 (RAM, operating system)(+bigger hard drive)(+buy new rechargeable battery)(+buy new portable power adapter)?; or do I need to abandon it and buy a newer apple computer (0-2 years old)?
    ABOUT MY MAC:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Model: iBook G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 256 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.7f1
I will appreciate your suggestions very much! Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Cali and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I think that decision would depend on how you plan to use this laptop. In addition it would depend on your client base and the image you need to project.
I used to be a commercial producer. If I was still doing that today I'd need to project a successful up to date image. My clients at the large agencies were/are attracted to the latest technologies. I would have the hippest iPhone apps and probably a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro.
I have a pro photographer client who wanted to buy an iMac a few years back but I insisted she buy a Mac Pro with at least two of the largest Cinema Monitors she could afford.
She has thanked me multiple times since she says her clients are so impressed with her images when she displays them on those large monitors.
So it would depend on how you're using the laptop and your client base.
The first thing I see with your iBook is that your RAM is pretty minimal. If you update that would be the first thing to do.
This is actually the iBook that I use and for me it's very cost effective. They're both 1.2 GHz machines. I use a 14" around the house and a !2" when we're traveling. It is very cost effective for me as I purchased them broken for under $125 total. I use salvaged drives and RAM. It works for me since my business is repair and the clients are impressed how well my 5 year old iBook works.

  • How can i buy new battery for my macBook pro in France

    Hello,
Please, someone can tell me how to find and buy new battery for my 2008 macBook pro in France ?
This one is very old, i already changed this battery one time, i think Apple store of town won't be ok to make the work cause i have made it myself one time before (it has fallen several times, almost broken, means impossible to shut the battery place but still working on). So i bought a battery to a third provider, wich doesn't work of course, try to ask to online assistance but i have to pay 30 € just to ask my question and i doesn't want...
SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO CHANGE MY BATTERY ??? HELP !!!
I bought it in 2008. I don't know exactly the serie. Just know it's a 2,4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo.
The reference of battery is A1281 10,8V 50 Wh. Can't find it on the store. The only one i found was on a website who didn't tell it's was a fake...
    Lost 85 €

Here are the International Apple support telephone numbers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/he57
I note Egypt is not listed.
Purchasing a battery from a third party vendor is a high risk proposition.  Many such batteries have been found to be substandard.
I suggest that you try and contact Apple and see if you can have one shipped to you.
    Ciao.
