Repair disc permissions always finds files to repair

I've been repeatedly running repair disc permissions via disc utility, as my MacBook Pro has become extremely slow. Every time I run the repair button the program will find 'problem' files to repair.
When I select the verify options it will not find conflicts.
Will there always be conflicts the program finds?
Incidentally, the slowness started when I upgraded to 10.5.x. And my new (aftermarket) battery gets extremely hot and won't hold a charge for long (despite priming numerous times).

Hi,
according to this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 they will be always there and can safely be ignored.

  • Repair permissions always finds the same

Using an iMac, Snow Leopard with the latest updates.  Every time I run repair permissions I get a 18-20 listing of items, usually Java related with an occasional 'system framework' notation.   Is there an update or is this typical??
    Thank,
    GH

The basic answer is that some files have been re-located in some of the recent releases (Java for one) and the permissions repair application isn't looking for them in the new location.
Some will no doubt be corrected with the next increment or OS release, but expect different ones to turn up then

  • Find file doesn't find and doesn't finish

With no significant events leading to the issue, ⌘F will search but never finds anything and never stops searching. Disk Utility verifies the startup volume, no problems found. Repaired permissions, still Find File will not work. Any suggestions?

Since yesterday all my usual .xls files will not open (Office for Mac 2011). CAN open .xlxs files. Default 'open with' is Microsoft Excel.app. No software updates done yesterday or the day before (or maybe a Silverlight or an Acrobat one by accident?). Have repaired disc permissions. HHD name is still same as it always was. What next? Thanks
PS I'm not a great techie so assume I don't know what you're talking about!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • How do I stop keychain from freezing? I've tried repairing it, and my disc permissions, but to no avail.

I'm in a bind. For a while now my Macbook Pro has been unable to connect to any new networks. It connected to my home network just fine, but anytime I tried to connect to a new one, I would get the spinning beach ball and be forced to hard restart. I think that the issue is related to keychain, as every time I try to open keychain the same thing happens. I did manage to get keychain open once, and tried repairing it, but that didn't help. I also tried doing a safe boot and repairing my disc permissions, which also didn't solve my problem. There was also a tutorial I found about deleting a file called "CodeEquivalenceDatabase" in the /var/db folder, and again, no dice. I'm at a loss here as I recently moved and cannot connect to my new network. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  • Why does my macbook pro keep repairing the same disc permissions

I am trying to figure out why my early 2008 macbook pro is lagging. I tried to repair disc permissions but it always repairs the same ones. The other thought I had was that the video card may be on its way out, but not sure how to check that.

Some of the messages that Disk Utility provides when repairing disk permissions are informational only, and not of consequence. See this Apple note on messages you can ignore: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
On your video card, run the Apple hardware test using the extended test, which will check out the video hardware.

  • Repair permissions always via install dvd?

Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it once a week and with every major install) there are the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And the list seems to get longer.
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to suggest.)
Is there any use doing the task just from the active system or is it really useless?
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my system".
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions repair disk errors as well?
    Thanks for advice!

    Hello-
    I don't claim to be a 'tech expert' but my understandings seem to work for me. If I'm wrong, I'd be just as interested in other opinions as yourself, so FWIW;
Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it
once a week and with every major install) there are
the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And
the list seems to get longer.
The list you see doesn't mean that anything was wrong, just set to something other than what the original permissions called for. If there is a problem you will usually get a red listing indicating a failure of some sort. Although the value of arbitrarily repairing once a week if no OS/app installs or upgrades is questioned by many, the consenus opinion seems to be "it can't hurt".
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and
repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is
that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions
always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to
    suggest.)
As I understand it, you are doing the right thing. Some rather knowledgeable folks actually say this is the 'better' way because your version of the OS has most likely been updated to something newer than what's on the Install CD. IOW, you should Repair Disk Permissions based on the same OS version you are repairing.
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my
    system".
There really isn't that much that needs to be done other than following the suggested 'proactive' approach pertaining to perm. repair, standard cache maintenance (if you run your system 24/7 it's automatic, or you can run the routines manually if your comfortable with Terminal. Otherwise, a utility like OnyX -free- is readily available.)
As long as you aren't constantly downloading, installing & removing every piece of junk you can get your mouse on you should be OK.
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find
disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions
    repair disk errors as well?
Repair Perms doesn't, but the OS does a much better job than Windows, which needs such a utility because it creates the errors in the first place. Disk Utility does include a Repair Disk function which requires starting up from a different boot disk, but it doesn't need to be used as a matter of 'routine' maintenance.
In the event you do run into problems, these Discussions are one of the most invaluable resources available to you. Don't hesitate to ask & you'll get some excellent advice & guidance on any situation you may encounter. Just wait for considered responses before taking any response at face value.

  • New items showing up during repair of disc permissions

I'm seeing a LONG list of items like this during repair of disc permissions. Can you guide me please about their meaning, and what to do, if anything? What is SUID?
    Many thanks.
Warning: SUID file "Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/kcproxy" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Can you guide me please about their meaning, and what to do, if anything?
    Ignore them.
    What is SUID?
Basically, those items perform various system functions with root access. They're appearing because a Mac OS X or other update modified them from what the repair permissions mechanism was expecting.

  • Running Repair Disc Permissions

When running Repair Disc Permissions in Safe Mode I get dozens of lines saying : Permissions Differ on Library/Printers/Epson......... and the next line will say: Repaired "Library/Printers?Epson....... then on to the next line and on and on. It says the permissions are repaired but if I run another Permission Repair immediately, the same Details show and are repeated each time. Most of the lines refer to Epson Printers but not all. They are all Library permissions. I do not have an Epson printer and I have never had an Epson printer hooked up? Why do these seem to not get repaired even though it easy they are?

I'm here because I'm seeing this same thing (along with "Warning: SUID file....has been modified and will not be repaired").
Lately I have begun to experience some annoying performance issues with my (late 2013) MBP that I have not had before (freezes-up, slower-than-usual operation, etc.). I'm running Disc Utility more often and nothing seems to help.
Is there anything more that I can do; any other diagnostic software that I can install to see what might be going on? At one point, I had very little hard-disc space free, so I've deleted a bunch of stuff and now have more than enough free space. I'd hoped this would take care of the problems, but it's still acting up.
It figures that just when I've been bragging about how great my MBP is - how I never have trouble with it - and have been doing my best to talk my husband and a friend of ours into replacing their old, worn-out PCs with MBPs, I start having trouble with mine.
Almost as if it's trying to tell me something???
    Thanks!

  • Repairing disc permissions and ACL...

When I repair my disc permissions, the software takes much longer than in previous OSX's and I routinely get "ACL found but not expected in "Library."
    Anyone know what this means?

You can not think that Leopard repair and verify permissions would react as Tiger's. Two vastly different OS.
The speed will take longer using Leopard and depends upon what Mac you are using. My Mac Pro takes about 3.5 minutes. My Powerbook takes about 8 mins.
ACL just ignore that dialogue. This is an old posted issue that does not merit any investigate.
In computer security, an Access Control List (ACL) is a list of permissions attached to an object. The list specifies who or what is allowed to access the object and what operations are allowed to be performed on the object. In a typical ACL, each entry in the list specifies a subject and an operation: for example, the entry (Alice, delete) on the ACL for file XYZ gives Alice permission to delete file XYZ.

    Hi Bob,
Those aren't changes, those are just informational messages. You'll noticed that it does not say "Permissions are wrong" or "Permissions have been changed," which it what you'll get when there is an actual permissions problem.
Here's a Knowledge Base article that explains it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107298
At one time there was a sticky post that said, in huge bold letters, "'We are using special permissions' message can be ignored" (or something to that effect). Personally, I wish they'd remove the informational message from the repair permissions routine, just for all the confusion it causes....
    HTH!

  • Repair permissions - always the same ones need repairing (Shockwave)

Each time I do a Repair Permissions after doing an installation (in this case Security 008 update for Intel on my MBP) the same permissions always are repaired and ONLY these. Here's the report I always get:
    Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r--
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Does this seem logical? correct?
I know they are repaired since when I go to do the next installation and begin by Repairing Permissions, nothing needs repairing. Yet I know that after another installation the Shockwave permission differences will rear their heads again.
I do know tht Shockwave is an Adobe thing and I believe it is needed for Quicktime. Could there be something wrong with my Shockwave - or is this typical of Adobe products?
    Thanks,
    Mrs H

So, I have now updated the Security Update 008 on the G4 and guess what, the same Shockwave Repair permission issue. It DID NOT appear when I repaired permissions before and after the other updates (Java, QuickTime, Migration DVDCD..., etc) But Shockwave repairs did appear after Security 008.
I found this link to another thread here on Security 008 and Shockwave. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8699716&#8699716
...but, I don't know if this is my problem.
In any case, I just have to update iTunes (only on G4) and Safari (on all my Macs) and then I'm good to go - or at least good to go and figure out what is wrong with Shockwave!
Oh one more update to do - a casual remark I made in reply to another poster has led me to learn that I can update my Appleworks 6 and get it to work in X. Hurrah!
