Repair Disc Permissions must run before I can open apps

Hi- I've been having a recurring problem over the last week: that an application suddenly won't open. After I've been to Disc Utility and run Repair Disc Permissions, it opens again....... and then perhaps a few hours later I have exactly the same problem and go through the same procedure !
Something must be wrong .................... but what ?
I've been surfing and looked at various apps for System Maintenenance and then found an extensive article in this forum which explained that normally, no extra maintenance is necessary.
So now I'm confused. And help to clarify matters would be much appreciated !
SeaDream

Wow- that was interesting reading ! Yes- I've been using Mozy for about a year, and a couple of days ago, noticed that the icon had disapeared. As I installed SuperDuper last week, I'll unclick it !
Thanks for the tip, Kay.

  • An old macbook running 10.6.8 was restored using Time Machine then Snow Leopard was reinstalled and updated to 10.6.8. Now the machine is slow and repair disc permissions results in a cancelled by user message.

Our old macbook was getting a gray screen with flashing ? on bootup. Eventually I restored it using Time Machine then decided to reinstall Snow Leopard since it would not boot. Machine now boots but is slow. Ran repair disc and tried to run repair disc permissions but got a message that it was cancelled by user.
This machine is at least 6 years old and I just want to limp it along until I can afford to replace it in the spring.

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

  • Running Repair Disc Permissions

When running Repair Disc Permissions in Safe Mode I get dozens of lines saying : Permissions Differ on Library/Printers/Epson......... and the next line will say: Repaired "Library/Printers?Epson....... then on to the next line and on and on. It says the permissions are repaired but if I run another Permission Repair immediately, the same Details show and are repeated each time. Most of the lines refer to Epson Printers but not all. They are all Library permissions. I do not have an Epson printer and I have never had an Epson printer hooked up? Why do these seem to not get repaired even though it easy they are?

I'm here because I'm seeing this same thing (along with "Warning: SUID file....has been modified and will not be repaired").
Lately I have begun to experience some annoying performance issues with my (late 2013) MBP that I have not had before (freezes-up, slower-than-usual operation, etc.). I'm running Disc Utility more often and nothing seems to help.
Is there anything more that I can do; any other diagnostic software that I can install to see what might be going on? At one point, I had very little hard-disc space free, so I've deleted a bunch of stuff and now have more than enough free space. I'd hoped this would take care of the problems, but it's still acting up.
It figures that just when I've been bragging about how great my MBP is - how I never have trouble with it - and have been doing my best to talk my husband and a friend of ours into replacing their old, worn-out PCs with MBPs, I start having trouble with mine.
Almost as if it's trying to tell me something???
    Thanks!

Since yesterday all my usual .xls files will not open (Office for Mac 2011). CAN open .xlxs files. PS I'm not a great techie so assume I don't know what you're talking about!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. • Repairing disc permissions

I frequently repair disc permissions on my three apple computers running the latest updated version of Tiger. Today, when I went to repair permissions on each computer, I noticed a large amount of permission repairs, and all the
same ones on all three computers. After the repairs were made, and I ran permission repairs again, all the same problems showed up gain. Usually, one sees a clean slate when running repairs after it has just been done. This has occured on all three computers. I have never seen this before. I have have a G5 dual tower, a G4 powerbook 12", and a G4 powermac tower. Any ideas???
    THanks

What you are seeing is normal and nothing to concern yourself with. You will see thesame messages each time you run the disk permissions utility. I used to have a link to an explanation of this but with the forum changes I can't seem to locate it. The bottom line is that it is nothing to worry about, it is just informational and not an indication of a problem,

  • Repair disc permissions always finds files to repair

I've been repeatedly running repair disc permissions via disc utility, as my MacBook Pro has become extremely slow. Every time I run the repair button the program will find 'problem' files to repair.
When I select the verify options it will not find conflicts.
Will there always be conflicts the program finds?
Incidentally, the slowness started when I upgraded to 10.5.x. And my new (aftermarket) battery gets extremely hot and won't hold a charge for long (despite priming numerous times).

    Hi,
according to this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 they will be always there and can safely be ignored.

  • Not repairing Disc permissions

When I run Disc Utility, select the HD listed and run "repair disc permission" it goes through the process and list all the errors and repairs. When I go back and run it again, all the errors and repairs happen all over again, I shut down, restart and run " repair disc permissions" again and the errors and repairs are still there. I do not have a OS-X 10.6 disc to run "repair disc"
Any idea why are these errors are not repaired? I have not had a problem repairing permissions until lately.

  • Another user of your computer is currently using this connection. This user must disconnect before you can log on.

    Hello
I have a single computer that is going to be shared between 5 people. In an effort to save time. I wanted the users to have a single shared LOCAL login to the computer.
Then each user could pull up an RDS session through RDWEB on our 2012 r2 RDS farm.
However, when I attempt to log in more than one user through RDWEB I receive:
Another user of your computer is currently using this connection. This user must disconnect before you can log on.
I have done some research on this, and followed this advice, and did the following steps on all my RDS session host and broker servers
    Enable Multiple RDP Sessions
       -  Log into the server using Remote Desktop.
       - Open the start screen (press the Windows key) and type gpedit.msc and open it
       - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections.
       - Set Restrict Remote Desktop Services user to a single Remote Desktop Services session to Disabled.
       - Double click Limit number of connections and set the RD Maximum Connections allowed to 999999.
However, it did not solve the problem. Anyone have suggestions?

    Hi Michael,
In addition you can try below registry setting for multiple remote session.
    HKEY_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server
    fSingleSessionPerUser     REG_DWORD     0x00000000
Note: By default the registry value is set to 1, but you need to change to 0.
Also if you are making connection through gateway then recheck whether the setting is enabled on gateway side for multiple session.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

Firefox has run before but can't start any more.
I tried the solutions proposed but it doesn't work

    Hello,
    See this help Article :
[[Firefox won't start - find solutions]]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In case you want to do something straight away, try a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
    * Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
    * After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
    * Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    * Windows:
    * C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    * Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    * Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Install Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
    * Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    * Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    * Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
'''''WARNING:''''' Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!
Please report back to see if this helped you!

Pages is telling me that I need a newer version before I can open my document.  I have the latest version and I am able to open older versions.  Whats up?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Since the last update my Numbers app in IOS, iPad3 and iphone5 will not open.  It works fine on my macbook pro.  It starts but before I can open a file it closes.

Since the last update my Numbers app will not load in either my iPad3 or my iPhone5.  It works fine on my MacBook Pro.  The app starts but before I can open a file it closes.  Is this a common problem and do you know hwo to solve it?

    Hi Michael,
If you've already restarted both your iOS devices after the update and Numbers for iOS still won't load, you might try clearing the documents temporarily out of iCloud, opening the apps, closing them, and then placing the documents back in iCloud.
To do this, in Finder on your Mac, hold down the option key and then Go > Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers.  Move the documents there out to the Desktop or other location of your choosing.  Then give iCloud time to sync.  Then try opening Numbers on iPad and on the iPhone.  If they open, then close them, and move the documents back into  Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers and let iCloud sync again.
That sometimes clears up the problem.
