REPAIR DISK button greyed out

I wanted to VERIFY a volume and received and red-letter error that the volume needed repair.
Here is the exact message:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
However, the REPAIR DISK button is greyed out. How can I repair this VOLUME if there is no REPAIR option?
Thanks,

Joel,
You are probably going to find that booting to the install disk and running Disk Utility that way isn't going to help any further that "fsck" did. In fact, there is no difference between the command line "fsck" and Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" routine.
What you have is a disk error that Disk Utility cannot fix. In most cases, Disk Utility will tell you that it cannot repair a particular error, if such is the case. In rare cases (lke yours), however, Disk Utility or fsck will report that repairs were made, when in fact they were not. I recommend that you do go ahead and make the attempt, but I am betting that you find the error still exists.
Disk Warrior may have better success in making the repair, if you want to pay for it.
However, you should be aware that files are likely to have been damaged by the disk error, and even a successful repair of the file system cannot replace any data that has been lost. In other words, any critical system files that are currently damaged will remain so, and any problems you are experiencing as a result of the damaged files will still exist.
Unfortunately, the only way to fix these damaged files is to format and reinstall, preferably "zeroing" the drive in the process. Since this necessitates making a good backup first, that should be your biggest concern right now.
If you know how to go about making a comprehensive backup, and are able to do so now, that is what I recommend you do. If you have difficulty making a backup as a result of the disk error, Disk Warrior may be able to help, and it might be worth laying out the cash for it. If, however, you have no problems making a backup, Disk Warrior (and its cost) would be uneccessary, IMO.

I went to system preferences and selected the option to open the blank CD in I tunes.
This worked for burning MP3's no problem
HOWEVER it will not open in the finder, so I can't save any data from my desktop on to a CD/DVD, so my hard Drive is getting clogged
Got a Hammer?

I loaded at least 20 different BLANK CD's to experiment with.
The same CD's which get spat out when I open it in finder, burn fine when i open them up in I tunes
I've already bought a new drive and the same problem occurs as when i had the old drive (can't open in finder), so i believe the bad drive and bad CD premise has been troubleshot.
It seems like it won't recognize the Drive or CD when i try to launch a CD from the finder
The blank CD's burn music fine when I open it up in I tunes, but not when I try to open it up in the finder when i try to put data on the CD's.

• Repair disk permissions "greyed out"

We have a G5 with 2 internal hard drives that we use as a server. I can run "repair disk permissions" on one drive, but on the other the choices for repair or verify disk permissions is greyed out. Why is this and how can I repair the permissions on the one drive?

2 possibilities come to mind.
(1) The disk in question does not have Mac OS X installed on it (required for permission repair).
(2) The disk in question does not have suitable files in the /Library/Receipts folder (such a folder doesn't exist, I guess, if OS X isn't there - see (1)).

• [Bug][Tip]Time Machine "Select Disk" Button Greyed Out (But Still Operational)

Recipe:
1) Log in as a non-admin user which has Time Machine enabled
2) Open Time Machine Preferences
3) Unlock Settings and enter admin username and password

5) Click the Select Disk Icon anyway and change disks.
I discovered this because I carry my Mini between home and work and have a backup drive in each location.  Time Machine is only able to remember one drive at a time (but it handles this setup just fine as long as you Select Disk when you get to a different drive).

• Submit Button Greyed Out (v 4.0.5)

I have been using Compressor successfully for about a year.  Recently it updated to v4.0.5.   Now I am not able to submit, with the final Submit button greyed out.  I have checked my Destination folder permissions and all appear correct.
What could be the cause of this, and what shall I do?  I need to render a program urgently for broadcast.
Thanks
Geoff

I just resolved a similar problem.  I am running OSX 10.6.8 on a MBP 13" 2010.
Once inside Compressor I'd click on "submit" and the drop down window would show "none" next to "Cluster:" and the submit button was greyed out.
I called Apple Care and they had me delete the preference file "com.apple.Compressor.plist" file from my user>library>preferences folder.  This did not fix the problem on its own.
They then had me delete the Apple Qmaster folder from user>library>application support.  This did not fix the problem on it's own.
I then reinstalled the Compressor application itself.  This did not fix the problem on its own.
I then verified permissions and repaired permissions using disk utility.  This did not fix the problem on it's own.
I then clicked on "Share Monitor" which is found on the Compressor task bar.  "This Computer" was displayed in the left column.  I simply clicked on it in order to high light it.  I left the "Share Monitor" window open and went back to the submit panel and "This Computer" was now displayed next to "Cluster:" and the program is now working again.
YMMV.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

• Yosemite won't install on my computer because the disk needs to be repaired. I verify, it indicates repair is needed but then the repair disk button can't be clicked. I tried to start in safe mode but it just froze.

I'm to install Yosemite but it tells me the disk need to be repaired. When I verify the repair disk button remains pale and in-clickable. I'm not sure which version of OS X I'm running but I do know I forgot to back up. Help me o-message board, you're my only hope!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First of all, open the Apple menu -> About this Mac, and tell us what OS X version you have.
If it is 10.6.x, you need the Snow Leopard DVD. Insert it, press the C key while your Mac is starting up, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (in the menu bar) -> Disk Utility.
If it is 10.7.x or higher, hold down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up to boot up in OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
After opening Disk Utility, choose your OS X partition in the sidebar (it is usually named "Macintosh HD") and press "Repair Disk". When it has finished, restart your Mac, make a backup of your files and try upgrading to OS X Yosemite.
The backup will help you in case you decide to go back to the OS X version you are using now. If you cannot make a backup and the disk repair does not work, you will have to format the hard disk.

• Agent email help - buttons greyed out at one location

The setup:  Two call centers.  One in NC and one in CA.
The one in NC, which is where the call center servers are, has no issues with email buttons becoming active.
The one in CA, every morning when the agents login the email buttons will not become active unless the users do the following workaround
Start agent.
Run and IE url that was given to me by Cisco.  http://<ipaddress of ccx server/EemUi/index.jsp?port=59015
This will force Java to start and have the java icon appear in the system tray.
Email buttons become active
Close IE window (which make email buttons grey out again)
close and restart agent
Email buttons work.
I only have this issue in the CA office.
I had them ship a desktop to me in the NC office.  I connected it and did NOT have an issue.  Everything works perfectly here.
Is the issue tied to the distance?  Is there some java time out setting I can tweek to make this work.
I didn't have this problem with 8.5 su 2.... it happened after the update to su 3
Anyone seen this?  Cisco has no answer.

I bounced this around the office to get some ideas.  One question - how long is the CA office waiting for the email buttons to become active?  That is, setting the workaround aside, if they wait long enough, do the Agent E-Mail buttons ever become active?    The thinking is that could be a factor as the entire applet is around 40 MB. If connection speed isn't great it could take a while to download which would explain the scenario.

• Put, Get , Connection buttons greyed out

Hi All,
I am pretty new to Dreamweaver but not to web development. I
have set up and connected a few sites from my own PC. It all goes
just like it says in the manuals.
But I got called into a client site who have an existing site
set up in Dreamweaver. The DW person left and the current person
wanted some coaching. Well the Code, Split, Design views all came
up and we could edit just fine.
But over on the right, above the list of files, all the
buttons (put, get, connection etc.) were greyed out. At first I
assumed the FTP connection was not set up, but it was, because when
we saved files, they saved straight to the live site.
So I went over to look at Site / Manage Sites. The FTP
connection was listed, but many of the other options (all the
categories within Advanced) did not seem to be available. They were
not just grayed out - I could not even see the list of them.
I have been fiddling around at home on my own sites, trying
to figure out how to recreate this and I can't. I can figure out
how to put myself onto live updating (update to remote FTP on Save)
but I don't get the other buttons greyed out just because I am
working like this.
Any ideas? I'd like to be able to go back there, take them
off live updates and restore the buttons.
Thanks
Abigail

Unless one is working in ColdFusion, or has special
requirements, the FTP &
RDS server option should never be used.

• Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out

Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out.  I have downloaded and installed Itunes 11 (multiple times) and restored my phone twice already, but I am still not able to sync my Iphone 4 with Itunes.
When I select / de-select Apps on Itunes to remove from the phone the "Apply" button does appear, but after I click it nothing happens.  Then the greyed out "sync" button just appears again.
Anyone with some advise please?

Try Restarting or Resetting your touch.
Restart: Hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears and turn off your iPod. Press the sleep/wake button and hold it until you see the Apple icon.
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The red slider will appear first, keep hold everything until you see the Apple icon. Release the buttons.
Check your iPod and see if your music and apps have reappeared. If they do after either option, then resync your iPod.
If neither works, then Restore your touch through iTunes.

If these don't work you probably have a hardware problem. Visit an Apple store for an evaluation or contact Apple Support.

well, you know how it is - glitches that usually resolve with a hard reset etc
then a restore. then a factory restore....then ..... nothing fixes so I try the next step with apple online - fill out my serial number and find it is a couple of weeks out of date - and then with the holidays who has time to get to the apple store? this is my second 4s handset as it is - first one the glass cracked from L to R without any impact/damage etc - they changed it out automatically because it's a 'known fault' apparently - so technically, this handset is only 6 months old - but warranty is from original purchase date -
never imagined it would turn out to be a warranty issue with the phone - and hey maybe when I get a chance to go to the apple store they'll be sympathetic, but I won't be able to get there till at least Jan 4th as it is. On the other hand, another iOS update might resolve the issue - but how long till that release? at the moment I'm having to use my old 3gs for wifi and 4s for phone!!!

• Yosemite won't install. Tells me to repair my hard drive, but repair disk button is greyed out!

Ive been trying to install Yosemite for hours. It gets to the installation phase, where it says it will take 22 minutes. Nothing happens until finally there is a message that says: file system verify or repair failed and to quit the installer to restart. I've tried that a few times, but I get to the same point. I also tried to go to utilities where I tried to repair disk, but it's not available so I'm told to do verify disk first and from there I'm told to repair disk, but the button is greyed out and I have no more options and a computer that is stuck in limbo!

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc (Tiger?) & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
Click _*Repair Disk.*_
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

• Permissions buttons greyed out in disk utility

In the disk utility, the "verify permissions" and "repair permissions" buttons are greyed out no matter which disk is selected in the left-hand pane. Does anyone know why this is so and/or what alternative ways there are of repairing permissions?
The problem persists whether I start the computer from the recovery system (command-r) or not.
Thanks.

Hi again and thanks for bearing with me!
I haven't done any cleanup, however there are only a couple of files in /Library/Receipts/, all very old, so I'm guessing the receipts are kept elsewhere after OS X 10.5, since the KB article you referred me to explicitly refers to pre- 10.5 systems.
The disk utility log in console and the info in the disk utility itself both give exactly the same info, which is basically what you’ve given:
              Owners Enabled :           Yes
Can Turn Owners Off :           Yes
              Can Repair Permissions :           Yes
              Can Be Verified :           Yes
              Can Be Repaired :           Yes
              Can Be Formatted :           Yes
              Bootable :           Yes
              Supports Journaling :           Yes
              Journaled :           Yes
              Disk Number :           0
              Partition Number :           2
If I understand correctly, this would all mean that I should be able to click “verify permissions” in the disk utility, but for some mysterious reason I cannot.
However, in the KB article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452) I notice it says “While started from an installation disc in Mac OS X v10.5 and later, a user's home directory permissions can be reset using the "Reset Password" utility.” Does this mean that if I use the reset password utility I can reset permissions and therefore not need to use the repair permissions function of the disk utility? Or is this something completely unrelated to what I’m trying to do?
I really appreciate your help very much - the only reason I wanted to repair permissions was that it was one of the recommended solutions to a problem I’ve had with microsoft office, which thankfully has now been solved after reinstalling os x and office, but it still bugs me that the option to repair permissions seems unavailable!
Anyway, it's not the end of the world if it can't be solved, you've helped me learn a lot in the process!

• Disk Utility - Verify button greyed out.

I'm running 10.4.9 & have everything updated except for the recent Pro App. I wanted to verify my disk before installing this when I noticed that the button was greyed out! I click on my hard drive, I click on my disk & it's still greyed out!
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I never use the Verify Disk feature from my boot volume which can report a problem that doesn't exist when later running Repair Disk via Disk Utility when booted from your install disc.
If a problem is reported when selecting Verify Disk via Disk Utility from your boot volume, you will need to do the repair when booted from your Tiger install disc anyway so best all around to go ahead and do this from the outset, select your language and at the Installer menu bar, navigate to Disk Utility. Select your boot volume in the drives and volumes window which is usually Macintosh HD and under the First Aid tab, select Repair Disk.
Selecting Repair Disk does a Verify first anyway and if a problem is discovered attempts to make the repair so running Verify Disk first or instead of Repair Disk only each time does not gain anything.
