Repair Disk messed up my login

When i tried to use boot camp it gave me an error about specific files cannot be moved, so I verified my disk and it said it was corrupt even though it worked fine, I booted in to my snow leopard disk and repaired the disk. after it successfully finished i booted up then i logged in, when i was logging in normally it just goes right from the aurora background behind the login windows to my desktop background but now it is flashing blue in between that transition?

Try starting your computer in safe mode, (holding down the Shift key while restarting) if you are able to log in then go into disk utility and repair your permissions then restart and try again.

I called Apple Support after getting no usuable help through the Apple Forums. The rep felt is was a problem with the two older USB 2.0 drives compatablility with the Retina Macbook Pro's USB 3.0. He kindly offered to send me a Compatable USB 3.0 Drive, but could not offer a solution.
FYI, I tried using different cords and both USB 3.0 ports on my Retina MacBook Pro and both are self powered.
    Thanks,

  • HT3275 I continue to get the following error message: Unable to complete back up.an error occurred while creating backup folder. It's a brand new drive. When I attempt to repair it using disk utility I get:unable to repair disk cannot unmounted

I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hope

I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

  • Repair Disk Problem

I'm working on an iMac 2.8GHz, Intel Corei7, running 10.6.8
My machines been sluggish lately so I decided to run some repairs in Disk Utility. When I go to 'Verify Disk' I get this error message:
This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
So I read on another post that I need to reboot with my OSX disk in order to repair the disk (the Repair Disk button is grayed out). So I put my disk in and tried to boot the disk from start up (holding down C). I got a white screen for about 10 minutes so I turned the machine off manually and tried again with the same result. I turned it off again and logged in and tried to boot the disk just from clicking the 'install' button and again it went to the white screen.
I also tried to do a reboot with holding down the alt button, and I got this crazy cartoon HD (a cartoon looking computer holding a mouse, looked like clipart) and the disk but it wouldn't let me do anything, it froze.
I was able to login regularly and my machine is working fine, but I feel like something must be wrong, how do I repair my disk? Thanks!

My profile is linked to my personal computer and I'm on my work computer so this info is correct:
I'm working on an iMac 2.8GHz, Intel Corei7, running 10.6.8
But maybe I'm not using the correct disk, I put in the original DVD which looks like its 10.5.2 and we have upgraded since then so I'll have to see if I have that disk too. That must be it
    Thanks

  • 5 mins+ to boot, can't repair disk

    Hi
My 24" Core 2 Duo has started to experience problems when I power it up. I usually leave it on all the time, but recently when I restarted it, it took nearly 20 minutes to reach the login screen, and then at least 20 minutes to open the startup items.
I rebooted in Safe Mode successfully. I ran a Verify Disk on the startup disk using Disk Utility and it failed, recommending a Repair Disk. I booted from the install disk and ran Disk Utility. The start up disk is shown on the left but the volume "Macintosh HD" is not listed under it, so I am unable to run Repair Disk.
After reading http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417, I am not sure that I should attempt to run fsck. In any case I am not sure how to boot into the command line.
I have also run the Apple Hardware Test twice which gave the following error codes:
    4SNS/1/40000001:VGOR-10.832
    4SNS/1/40000001:VGOR-10.789
I have also reset PRAM and NVRAM.
Other than the 5-10min boot up time, the machine appears to be working normally. The disk's S.M.A.R.T. Status is Verified but I really want to run Repair Disk, so that I know whether to replace the hard drive.
    Any ideas?

Dave, you may well be right in the long run, but I have managed to get it going again for now. Here's how:
I booted to command line in single user mode (command-S on startup) and ran fsck:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
This gave an "invalid index key" error which fsck was unable to fix, despite running several times. A Google search of this error suggested that it is a pretty severe corruption of the directory catalog, and that total data loss was imminent. So I bought DiskWarrior and ran it on my MacBook connected by FireWire to the sick iMac in Target Disk mode. DW came up with lots of errors, and created a new "optimised catalog".
A reboot later, and voila!, the iMac boots up in under a minute. Now let's hope it lasts...

  • Can't repair disk permissions

I just bought a new Mac Mini (2.0 GHz Core Duo w/2 GB of RAM and 320 GB HD) and migrated all of my files over to it from my Time Machine Backup. Over the past two days my two external hard drives have developed permission problems. Yesterday, I booted my computer and my Time Machine backup drive (Western Digital 1 GB) had a small lock on the desktop icon and my permissions were all messed up. I had two versions of my account with "custom" permissions and "Staff" and "Everyone" also with "custom" permissions. I couldn't fix it, so I formatted the drive and now it is working.
Today my other external drive (don't remember maker, 500GB) is doing the same thing (lock on icon, et al), but I don't want to erase it. I tried going to Disk Utility and the verify and repair disk permissions buttons are greyed out. Now, I can't get to my iTunes content on that drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Paul

Called Apple Support three times with less than lousy results. My Mac Mini crashed on my first call and it took three Leopard installs before I got back to where I was to begin with.
However, none of the technicians would touch Terminal to fix this issue, but I had found instructions all over the Web. So, I ran some of the commands in Terminal and magically I could fix my permissions on the external HD. I am now repairing permissions on my Macintosh HD and hopefully that will be the end of it.
    Phew!

  • Why won't my macbook pro repair disk permissions after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

I upgraded my 2010 Macbook pro with 2.4gHz core 2 duo processor to Mountain Lion and ever since it has been giving me issues. One of my biggest concerns is that it will no longer repair disk permissions. The progress bar goes about half way and just sits there without finishing, and this is something i'm used to doing very regularly. Other than that it has been crashing fairly often and just acting strange where on Snow Leopard it never crashed or had any issues. Any suggestions?

Quit Safari. From the Finder click on Go > Go to Folder and type ~/Library/Preferences. Delete the com.apple.Safari.plist file. Logout/Login and restart Safari. Try to save a bookmark to the Bookmarks bar.

  • Activate repair disk?

Tried to install Mountain Lion and can't as damaged files (not been an issue before), tried to repair in disk utilities but can only verify, no repair disk option available (greyed out).

I rarely post, however, because of a major screw up with Mountain Lion, I will.  I have been using mac computers since 1987, have obviously installed and upgraded multiple OS new and upgrades and never, I mean never had a problem with any of them, until now.  The install stalled with the message that the hard disk needed repair.  I thought all of my data was lost, except for time machine backup, which was not as current as it should have been.  Losing that data would have been a royal pain.
Went through the restore OS from Time Machine, then tried to repair the disk with apple disk repair utility.  Not repairable.  Why?  I still don't have a clue.  After reading multiple threads, decided to go ahead and buy DiskWarrior.  This was a weird experienc.  Loaded it onto external hard drive, hooked my MacBook Pro as Target disk.  Loaded in DiskWarrior as hardware probelm.  ????  Immediately went online to see what advice about this message.  Looked like a massive coincidence had hit my laptop.  Worked perfectly until loading Mountain Lion, the decided to have hard disk melt down.  Suddenly, DiskWarrior indicated it was ready to rebuild my directory.  The hardware warning was gone.  A few minutes later, directory repaired.  Rebooted, same problem.  Can't load OS X, need to repair hard disk.  Apple disk repair still unable to repair disk.  Used DiskWarrior, repaired it no problem.
Deleted original OS 10.8 dmg.  Rebooted and downloaded fresh copy of OS 10.8.  This time install went flawlessly.  Mountain Lion transferred all info flawlessly.  Mid 2009 MacBook Pro running flawlessly and actually more smoothly now than in Lion.
    1.  I think original download was somehow corrupted and that is what screwed up the disk directory.
    2.  I do not know why apple Disk Utility would not repair the disk and Disk Warrior would.  Expensive fix, but ultimately worthwhile.  Did it mysefl and did not have to mess with "Genius" bar.
    3.  I will never go so long without backup again.  That was a big mistake.
    My advice:
    1.  Be sure you have smooth download of entire Mountain Lion file, if not, start over.  My download was paused a couple of times.
    2.  If the install is messed up and you need Disk Repair, buy DiskWarrior and repair directory, it works flawlessly.  If it initially says your disk has hardware problem, wait a few minutes while it finishes entire evaluation.  It may well disappear like mine did, then actually repair the directories without a problem.
    3.  Be sure you have deleted old OS 10.8 Install file and load fresh one.
    4.  Install OS 10.8 and you should be OK.
    5.  Good luck.
Mountain Lion seems to have some problems, but many of them may be due to server overload at apple, delayed download with incorporated unrecognized code problems.  If there is any delay, start over and get a smooth download.
Disk Utility is too light weight.  Apple needs to beef it up.  This is my biggest complaint.  Apple utility should be able to fix disks.  We should not have to spend $100 to fix a disk, but there you are.
Once fixed however, back to usual beautiful, flawless apple experience.

Yes, you cannot repair the startup volume from itself. Do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
You need to either free up space on your hard drive or replace it with a larger drive. You should always have at least 20 GBs or 10% of the hard drive's capacity, whichever is larger, as free space.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Problems after repairing disk with Mac OS X install Discs

Having been experiencing slowness in my iMac, I tried to verify disk and found that my HD Volume needed to be repaired. However, the "Repair Disk" button was gray. I later learned from online mac discussions that I should reboot my iMac with the Mac OSx install Disc. I followed the steps and then got the answer that there was nothing to be repaired.
The next thing I knew was that I could not get out of there. By choosing "Restart", I was bought back to choosing the language and installing the disc. Not wanting to do that I went around and around and finally had no choice but installing the Disc 1 and then 2. At one point, I was asked if I wanted to move previous files to the new location (don't remember the exact words), I said no. I was astonished to find out very soon that my computer was put back at its original state, meaning all the applications were empty.
I managed to get my safari and email (Microsoft Entourage) back. I transfered all photos from the "Previous System" folder to the present iPhoto. However, they are only sorted by year. all the categories and sub-categories that I so painstakingly created were gone, so were the keywords.
Among other problems, my iTune wouldn't open unless I have Mac OS X 10.4.9 (mine is 10.4.4). I am quite desperate at this moment. I know the previous settings are somewhere but have no idea how to bring them back.
I hope someone can help me get out of this mess. Thank in advance.
P.S. my iMac is much faster now. That is the only good news.
    LN

There is an option to +select the drive to restart from+ (don't remember the exact wording) in the Installer's menu. If you previously set the startup disk to be the disc in the optical drive, it will continue to restart from the Mac OS X installation disk until you change it. Alternately, you could press and hold the Option key at startup to bring up Startup Manager. This will allow you to select the disk to use for startup. For future reference...
If you did a complete reinstallation of the OS, you need to select Software Update from the Apple menu. This will get to you to the latest version of Tiger, which is 10.4.11.

  • Repair Disk with CD

Hi, is it safe to repair disk using the install cd? WHat exactly does it do? I had an error from Onyx asking me to do this. I just don't want my system preferences and system configuration all messed up. Thanks for the 411.

Since the install DVD is usually older than your current OS, it is recommended that you use the disk utility in your utilities directory. The only reason to use the DVD for repair is if the HD needs to be unmounted for real extensive repairs.
If you are only concerned with permissions, you definitely should be using the disk utility already on your computer, not the one on the install DVD.

  • Repair Disk Permissions Boosts Speed

I had a problem similar to another thread on this forum regarding the spinning beach ball. I was seeing this happen mostly when connecting to the Internet on Safari, but did see it sometimes on iTunes, iPhoto, and even Mail. After I ran Disk Utility, and had it repair disk permissions, eventually the speed problems started to go away. No spinning beach ball.
Can anyone explain why repairing disk permissions is the be all, end all solution? Why would disk permissions get corrupted in the first place?

There are many situations where problematic permissions can result in poor system performance, producing the spinning beachball, application or system crashes, freezes, unexpected quitting etc.
If software were a simple, single, executable file, permissions might not be so critical, but in reality, each application is a collection of components, loaded and executed or opened and read at appropriate times as the software itself is running. You can see some of these components if you right-click on an application icon and select 'show package contents' from the contextual menu - you'll then see a number of folders and files which are part of the app itself. There are other files too - library files - which applications have to have access to and which are 'prebound' to the application to help it run efficiently.
Since each of these components are crucial to the application, it is inevitable that if any have the wrong permissions, it can affect the ability of the software to read/open/execute the file. In many cases you might not notice any difference, but in others, the spinning beachball or a software crash would be expected.
Repairing permissions causes MacOs to run through it's system-level files and ensure that ownership and access rights for each is set correctly, thus resolving these issues.
Permissions can get messed by a number of things - not least being that the same file may be shared between applications and permissions thus set correctly for one but not the other, by installation of software or an update etc which overwrites a file or alters permissions for it, by some utilities or applications which do not entirely conform to the appropriate programming guidelines and thus alter files or permissions in ways that MacOS doesn't recognize, or just by simple error!
There's an excellent article on the subject you may find interesting at http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/secrets/repairpermissions/index.php?pf=1

  • Repair Disk Permissions ./usr?

This is the second time I've seen this after running my Repair Disk Permissions. Does anyone know what this means?
Group differs on ./usr, should be 0, group is 80
Owner and group corrected on ./usr
    Permissions corrected on ./usr
I've had my Mac for 2 years and run my Repair Disk Permissions regularly - I've only seen this once before a few months ago and now.
Also, where would I find ./usr
Thanks for any help or info.

I'm the only one that uses my Mac....
The operating system is made up of many small applications called processes. Each of these processes has a user (owner) and a group associated with it. Open the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder and select All Processes in the drop down menu. You are not alone! You should see yourself running applications (processes) and at least root and nobody listed as users. You may be the only login user on your computer but the operating system contains many non-login users that control different processes. The root user primarily controls the operating system. In OS X the root user is a non-login user unless you make root a login user.
    Who am I?
Every user has a primary group associated with that user. Let me do the "heavy lifting" from within the Terminal application. Of course you can try the command to see the ---text_output---. I'll use the command id to see who I am:
    [purplehaze:~] fred% id
    ---text_output---
    uid=501(fred) gid=501(fred) groups=501(fred), 79(appserverusr), 80(admin), 81(appserveradm)
I'm user 501(uid) whose shortname is fred. My primary group(gid) is 501 or fred. I belong to 4 groups. Because I belong to the group admin, I can install system software and perform tasks only the root user can do.
    Who are they?
Let's look at the id for the root user:
    [purplehaze:~] fred% id root
    ---text_output---
    uid=0(root) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel), 1(daemon), 2(kmem), 3(sys), 4(tty), 5(operator), 20(staff), 31(guest), 80(admin)
root's primary group (gid) is 0 or wheel. You can express users and groups in words or numbers. The root user belongs to many groups tied to running the operating system. Let's query the netinfo database for all the users on my computer showing the uid and gid in numbers, their shortname, where their home folder is, and their realname:
[purplehaze:~] fred% nireport . /users uid gid name home realname
    ---text_output---
    -2 -2 nobody /var/empty Unprivileged User
    0 0 root /var/root System Administrator
    1 1 daemon /var/root System Services
    99 99 unknown /var/empty Unknown User
    25 25 smmsp /private/etc/mail Sendmail User
    26 26 lp /var/spool/cups Printing Services
    27 27 postfix /var/spool/postfix Postfix User
70 70 www /Library/WebServer World Wide Web Server
    71 71 eppc /var/empty Apple Events User
    74 74 mysql /var/empty MySQL Server
    75 75 sshd /var/empty sshd Privilege separation
    76 76 qtss /var/empty QuickTime Streaming Server
    77 6 cyrus /var/imap Cyrus User
    78 78 mailman /var/empty Mailman user
    79 79 appserver /var/empty Application Server
    501 501 fred /Users/fred Mark Jalbert
    502 502 saraswati /Users/saraswati saraswati
Users above 500 are login users. User 501 was created when I installed my system software . User 502 is another login user on my system that I created. I have the ability to create other users because I belong to the group admin (80) Remember- only the root user or users who belong to the group admin can perform changes to the OS. Users below 500 where created by the operating system during installation and are responsible for running processes tied to the OS.
Hopefully, I haven't lost you in to much techno babble. You are not the root user but you are a member of the group admin. This allows you to take on the role of the root user and make changes to the operating system. As I said before- It's not a big deal whether the /usr folder has the group admin associated with it. If repairing permissions will not permanently change the group to 0 (wheel) then I suspect you may have some file corruption. From the Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder... type /usr and click to Go button to see inside the /usr folder.

  • Disk Utility says "drive can't be repaired, disk and restore your backed up files."

My Mac Book Pro froze yesterday and I had to force restart it. It had been showing me messages that my hard drive disk was full for a while and I was in the middle of transferring files to my external hard drive and I accidentally put a huge large file from my external hard drive into the trash on my laptop which makes me wonder if that means I added more GB to a computer that was already very full. Anyway, after freezing I restarted it and the desktop wouldn't load properly. The desktop picture was there, but folders on desktop did not appear, finder bar was missing and the dock was acting super slow and nothing worked when clicked on. Then the next few attempts were around the same result and eventually became stuck on the apple logo, spinning gear and a progress bar that was not loading at all.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    Safe mode- nothing happens
Command + R - I am unsure how to work this since I can't seem to find an internet connection when it prompts for one. None of the internet connections have much signal and my own information doesn't seem to load since the gear spins to find the internet connection name and password I typed to load it but can't seem to find it. Perhaps I have the wrong internet information, but I don't think so.
I tried Command + S to use in single user mode and type in a command to help fix the drive, BUT, even though the black screen and white lettering mode did show up, it remained in a place where I was not allowed to type anything and the last thing written at the bottom of the screen was something about set up for bluetooth, I think. I tried this twice and both times it stopped in the same place and I could not type a command.
Disk Utility using installation dvd to verify and repair disk. Verify says disk needs repair and then repair has some red colored phrases: Invalid volume file count. (It should be 786374 instead of 786274) Incorrect number of thread records. And there was another problem listed but I do not remember it. Then, near the end of repairing it says: "Disk Utility stopped repairing Macintosh HD." It tells me it couldn't repair the disk and that I should back up as many of my files as possible, reformat the disk and restore backed up files.
That would be fine and dandy, but I have no idea how to back up my files and do all this. I have no idea how to exactly get the data off my hard drive. If someone does, please list a step by step guide for me on how to do so.
I have an external hard drive and I tried plugging in and selecting the hard drive and making a "New Image" to copy to the external hard drive destination, but it just stops a few seconds into it and tells me there is an input/output error. I tried read only, read/write only, compressed options for making a copy and all yield the same result.
In Disk Utility, I believe I have a partition -the Macintosh HD. I have listed on the left hand side: 320.07 GB Hitachi HTSS45.....etc. and below it in non-bolded, grey lettering it says "Macintosh HD."
The Hitachi, when clicked upon, shows the S.M.A.R.T. status as Verified and the Macintosh HD doesn't show much in details except for "Not mounted."
At one point, the Macintosh HD was in bold lettering and seemed to be mounted for a few minutes. When that happened, I was able to see the details reading: Mount Point: /Volumes/Macintosh HD, Capacity: 319.73 GB, Available: 11.92 GB, Used: 307.81 GB, etc.
I'm getting nervous to keep turning on and off the computer on force start and shut downs, especially since I have been reading up that the longer the computer is on, the more the hard drive is in use and the more chance for it to start deleting or overwriting my files. Is this true?
It's not mounted anymore since it was momentarily mounted. I just want to get my files off the disk and save them to my external hard drive. That is my main goal right now. What can I do?
Thank you in advance for your help!

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
