Repair disk permission have deleted forlders on my external hard. What can I do to retrive data ?

I've ran a "disk permission repair" on my external hard drive and some folders have disapeared! Help!

Hello! Thanks for your response. So I've simply repaired permission on a WD 1TB external HD (it's formatted NTFS). Didn'nt format the drive or delete anything on it. I did this on my brand new imac 27. I did this for all my drives without any problem. Somehow, on this disk, some folders have disapeared. These are my memories, my personnal digital pictures from 2003-2009. Anything after 2010 is fine. When I check the volume, I see there is only 60gb left on the 1tb. Somehow, when I try to copy the whole content or what I see, i see that only 560gb is being transferred/copied on the other HD. In short, it seem like the files are till there but I can't see them. I've tried on another mac and even on a pc. Nothing. They must be somewhere ?!? Any idea ? I've tried some "undelete" software btu they can't find anything but always the same 12 pictures...

I think I have  mountain lion OS X....I have done I think almost every suggestion I've seen in discussion boards.
Boot in recovery repaired disk...ok...repair disk permission...all repaired but one warning...I've tried to reinstall lion (without losing data) and it Got all the way to one minute to be done and then the time change back two hours and kept doing this all night long.  I haven't done a back up due to no external for time machine.
I hope someone can please help me I've been going crazy for a week now trying to figure this out.  I use my computer for school and I'm currently very behind from in my school work  thank you
Also I've checked my available space  424.91 free of 750 gigs....disk is verified

Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that

  • My MBP won't boot anymore after "repair disk" and "repair disk permission"

My 2011 MBP 15 with Lion stopped working after I attempted to use Disk Utility to "repair disk" and "repair disk permission".
It was having weird issues before I attempted the repairs, it was freezing every few seconds no matter what I am doing, the whole thing would freeze with only the mouse movable. then after a few seconds it goes back to normal again. This happened after I downloaded and installed some updates from Apple. I don't know if the updates would cause this or it's something else.
In Disk Utility, "Repair Disk Permission" took 5 hours.  While "Repair Disk" resulted in "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files".
Now when it boots, there's a loading bar under the Apple logo, it loads half way and shuts down itself.
I can still get into CMD+R Utilities though.
Any idea how I can extract the data out of the disk?  I'm going to format and do a clean install.

A stopped loading bar is indicative of a failed firmware install that didn't complete, it's trying to install and is failing.
    Do a PRAM reset
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Reboot into Safe Mode, (shift key down) then reboot normally and see if that fixes the issue.

You may have to try to reinstall your firmware manually, you'll need another disk burning Mac
Find your exact firmware(s) here (or on Apple Downloads page)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
    Apply instructions here
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
Lastly it could be your boot drive is failing or something wrong happened with the update and accounting for all the to the other issues.
A OS X "overwrite" may solve the issue, may not.
    See 10.5, 106. 10.7 OS X "overwrite" here

  • Repair Disk Permission takes a long time

Whenever I repair disk permission in Disk Utility it takes about 20 minutes.
The log shows nothing besides the usual "secure.log". (that shows on all my macs.)
Repairing a second, third or fourth time always takes that long....
    Any clues? Anyone else?

#2 referring to variation of time on a specific machine and when comparing DU's walltime between machines
    Depends on
    -computer's processor clock rate
-disk read data rate (the DU process reads a lot more than it writes)
    -machine's memory speed
-machine's amount of physical memory (if small memory paging can occur)
-other system-level processes and user-level processes that are active and consuming resources
-number of files on the disk (each machine will more than likely have more or less)
-file system meta data fragmentation (varies from one machine to the next)
I've had maybe a score of people all using various Macs perform DU repair permissions on Leopard and their times vary from a low of 3 mins to around an hour. Go figure...
The Estimated time to complete in the progress bar is atrociously inaccurate.
On my PM G5 10.5.1 internal boot volume repair it takes consistently 8 mins and 43 secs of wall time. The progress bar shows when DU starts estimated time to complete is 1 min. It sits there while the DU's helper installdb process runs for maybe some 4 mins at 100% cpu use and a single thread. Then DU itself, DiskManagementTool and repair_packages (a big RAM hog) processes step in to also do work for the remainder of the time. These last three processes will also consume around 100% cpu together. The i/o is mainly reads all done at a fairly low data rate.

  • HT203172 After I did a "repair disk permission" on my Mac, do I clear history ?

I am having problems with my Mac running slow. I had a friend guide me to run a "repair disk permission".   I did that but I am not sure if I am to click clear history.   Also should I do anything else to help my Mac run better?   Thank you

Clearing history and cache gets rid of stuff some software may have to sort through.  That takes off some load but also means cached items are not available to speed that look up.  Most think it helps to periodically clear out the history and cache.

The opperating system I am using is 10.7.4, and updating to the latest version currently. Computer is running fine, except that when I did some utility repairs, I got the warning above, and not really sure what do, in regards to repairing it correctly, not just getting the message off of my computer.

That's a status message which can be safely ignored.

  • Warning sign with Repair Disk Permission" Warning: SUID file..."

When I run Repair disk permission from Disk Utility I get these messages with warning. Why do I get them, and how do I fix them?
    1. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    2. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

    how do I fix them?
You don't - they are harmless.
    Why do I get them
Apple has this to say about that:

You did the right thing by asking first - good luck with Snow Leopard.

  • Disk Utility can't "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission"

I booted up the Leopard 10.5.5 server from the Install Disc, and tried to do disk checks on all drives using Disk Utility.
When the system drive was selected all the "Verify Disk", "Repair Disk", "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission" functions are able to perform, however, if the non-system drives are selected only "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" are able to perform, the "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission" are GRAYED OUT ! and UNABLE TO perform the permission check and repair!! Any idea ?

Hi, I'm having a problem could be related. I've a 3 years old Xserve (not intel) with 3 HD managed by the apple original RAID board, all that running Mac OS X 10.4.
I remotely manage the server from my mac running OS 10.5.6 and Server Admin 10.5.3.
Well, I simply cannot propagate permissions because when I do it, Server Admin freezes and i must force it to quit. Obviously, privileges are not propagated.
All that di NOT happen 1 month ago when i was "happily" running Mac OS X 10.3.x and Server Admin 10.3.x. Upgrading has been a big boomerang.
    Any idea? Thanks

I have copied videos onto an external hard drive. to free memory on my macbook. When I try to delete these I am woarned that I will not be able to use this video in existing projects
How do I point iMovie to events in my external  hard drive so I can play projects which use them?
    MacBook, iMovie 9.0.4

    Hi
You can do this - by not doing it the way You describe as it will not work.
    a. the external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO (iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut doesn't matter)
    b. Do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder - at all
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done within the iMovie Application - then connections will not break.
(move them back and see if iMovie remembers them - then do move as described above)
    Yours Bengt W

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

its not working: (sorry for being so ambiguous), the computer recognises it, it comes up on my desktop, when i open it and try and drag a file across, it is unable to go into the drive, there is just a symbol indicating 'no' (i've read the instructions from Tosheba and there is no help). I have not partitioned the drive using the GUID partition scheme - i dont know what this means?!
