Repair disk permissions data

i have a mac mini i bought in december 2008..... when i run disk permissions, i get a bunch of data, such as:
Permissions differ on System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iphotoAccess.frame
/ilifemediabrowser
/coreservices/RawCamera.bundle
/mobiledevice
Ran it twice and still get all this stuff. Do I have problems? The computer is not acting any different...seems ok.

Do I have problems?
No. If you aren't having problems, you shouldn't use that function.

I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Can anyone see the issue or tell me what I need to do to fix this thing???

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

  • Apple: Repair "Repair Disk Permissions"

The Leopard version of Repair Disk Permissions is broke. No matter what it is doing behind the screen, it comes up with the chirpy "Repairing Disk Permissions. Estimated time: Less than 1 minute" then proceeds to wait five minutes (on a 160 GB MacBook Pro of recent vintage) before starting to move the bar from its initial, deceptive, 20% fulfilled position.
This performance and feedback flies in the face of Apple's own software behavioral edicts.
After the five-minute wait, it takes an additional 4:30 to move the bar to the end, even when it's the second run on the same drive. The reported times are NEVER accurate, never even approximate until the last 50 seconds.
And don't even get me started with all the reported failures to fix anything that consistently show up every single time.
In five minutes (300 seconds) my computer has the ability to impose 4.4 Billion computational cycles on the task of sorting out whatever ails my hard disk--per second. That's just a TRILLION point three total mathematical operations that might be brought to bear on thinking about what to do before starting to access the disk and fix its errant map of data.
To give that some scale, at one second per math problem, that equals around 42 thousand years. Which ought to be time enough to evolve the program into a more advanced version...

It's an interesting but irrelevant observation.
Disk Repair is not a mathematical operation - it obviously involves many disk reads - often the slowest component on a computer in terms of access times. Should any repairs be required - the system will then write and likely re-read to ensure the write was successful.
You are trying to figure out future events - how long the next action will take based on prior events - sometimes things change that make past performance a poor estimate of future performance.
As for estimating times - I've programmed this - and observed many attempts to do so - few work well or offer estimates anywhere near accurate. Observe the estimated times to complete a download in iTunes or the time to copy a file. I have seen many cases where the estimates said "10 seconds" and I waited minutes for them to complete.

  • Why isn't Disk Utility clear after "Repair Disk Permissions"?

Having used my computer for several days I decided to use Disk Utility to “Repair Disk Permissions” after a few hours of use.
    2008-11-29 08:30:17 -0800: Disk Utility started.
2008-11-29 08:30:24 -0800: Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    2008-11-29 08:30:24 -0800: Reading permissions database.
2008-11-29 08:30:24 -0800: Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.
    2008-11-29 08:43:29 -0800: Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
    2008-11-29 08:48:26 -0800: Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.

    2008-11-29 08:48:28 -0800:
    2008-11-29 08:48:28 -0800:
I shut down the computer, turned off its power for 1 minute and restarted. I initiated Disk Utility once again.
    2008-11-29 09:16:42 -0800: Disk Utility started.

    2008-11-29 09:38:49 -0800:
When Disk Utility was finished, I clicked on “Clear History” and reran “Repair Disk Permissions.”
2008-11-29 09:42:01 -0800: Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    2008-11-29 09:42:01 -0800: Reading permissions database.

    2008-11-29 10:00:19 -0800:
    Now everything seems clear.
    My question...
    Why did I initially see:
    2008-11-29 08:43:29 -0800: Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
    2008-11-29 08:48:26 -0800: Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
and why after restarting should I end up with only
    2008-11-29 09:38:47 -0800: Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
and after “Clear History” and rerunning Disk Utility why is everything clear until I start using the computer again?
I’ve had it explained that “Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26” is not meaningful, but I’d like to know WHY it happens. I’d also like to know why “ Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .” initially appears.
    Thank you,

As a casual "Apple Discussions" user it hadn't occurred to me that if a question had been answered previously, it should never be asked again.
It's not that. It's because the problem's been beaten to death over the past fourteen months, since Apple shipped Leopard, that most consider it common knowledge, no matter where one's been visiting or how often. Every Apple/Macintosh related website has addressed the never ending issue. Finally, since the forums Help file says:
*I have a question or issue—how do I search for answers?*
+It's possible that your question or issue has already been answered by other members so do a search before posting a question. On most Apple Discussions pages, you'll find a Search Discussions box in the upper right corner. Enter a search term (or terms) in the field and press Return. Your results will appear as a list of links to posts below the Search Discussions Content pane.+
+You can also refine your search by using the options in the Search Discussions Content pane. Click the Search Tips link for help with our search features. You can streamline your results by restricting your search terms by category or forum, specifying a date range, or searching for posts by username. You can also search the User Tips Library.+
Maybe that should be retitled: *+I have a question or issue—how do I resolve it?+*
Just out of curiosity, I wonder if any of these exceptional people can figure out my signature.

  • CD Ejects with Error Code 9 - Repair Disk Permissions Greyed Out

    History:
Superdrive 815CA Ejects Blank CD's to be burned w/ Error Code 9
    Exact Text:
The Operation Could not be completed an unexpected error occured(error Code 9)
The CD Ejects, but the Ghost Icon of the CD image would stay
Plays previously burnt CD's/DVD's as well as market CD's/DVD's fine
    Went to Disk Utility
Repair Disk Permissions(RDP) & Verify Disk Permissions(VDP) greyed out so you can'tclick them when I click on first aid
The only time they weren't greyed was when I clicked to repair the Ghost Icon CD, of which the actual CD was ejected in the first place
I cleaned the lens umteen million times - same problem
I did the Hardware repair check w/the startup CD, same problem
I bought a NEW frickin' Superdrive and installed it successfully- same problem
I went to system preferences and selected the option to open the blank CD in I tunes.
This worked for burning MP3's no problem
HOWEVER it will not open in the finder, so I can't save any data from my desktop on to a CD/DVD, so my hard Drive is getting clogged
    Got a Hammer?

I loaded at least 20 different BLANK CD's to experiment with.
The same CD's which get spat out when I open it in finder, burn fine when i open them up in I tunes
I've already bought a new drive and the same problem occurs as when i had the old drive (can't open in finder), so i believe the bad drive and bad CD premise has been troubleshot.
It seems like it won't recognize the Drive or CD when i try to launch a CD from the finder
The blank CD's burn music fine when I open it up in I tunes, but not when I try to open it up in the finder when i try to put data on the CD's.

  • Failure to repair disk permissions

    Hello fellow Mac users;
I really hope that someone here can help me with my issue.
I was doing some "spring cleaning" and deleted a whole bunch of unneeded files from my Mac, however I did not touch any system files!
When I restarted the Mac after all that it just showed the "thinking screen" the very first one with the Apple Symbol and it just "thought" for about 3 hours without bringing up the log in screen.
So I used my MAC OS X Installation Disk to get to the Disk Utility. I verified the disk and it said that the volume seemed to be okay. However when I tried to repair the disk permissions, I had a drop down window that said "permissions repair failure upon exit" and then in the main window it said the repair disk permissions was complete.
I'm scared now to try another restart and maybe crash my Mac totally! Help!!!
    Thank you for any input!

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I recommend saving all personal files including Address Book contacts, Mail accounts etc to an external disk or DVD immediately, at least for peace of mind should your system go down. Your cleaning exercise has likely caused an issue with installed receipts. Have a look in the folder Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts - all *.pkg installations (ie not those you drag-and-drop to install) store a receipt which tell OSX which permissions are required for the application. Disk Utility looks here when repairing permissions. If the names of your programs in /Library/Receipts are still present it's likely cleaning has corrupted the folders boms and db inside this directory. There is really only one option I personally would feel comfortable with, to perform a clean install (not archive and install) of OSX once I had saved my personal data. Don't bother backing up applications, those should all be clean installed as well on a fresh copy of OSX - if you need to remind yourself which 3rd party applications to reinstall afterwards, make a note beforehand including their serial numbers if licensed. If you own a paid-up .Mac account, goto System Preferences/.Mac/sync and select which essentials to back-up to your iDisk for convenient access following the reinstall.
I strongly advise against restarting your machine until you have saved everything you want to keep, should the worst happen.

  • Repair Disk Permissions corrupted a secondary user account

I've read various threads on this topic but none that have solved my issue.
I have 4 accounts on my iMac.  Account 1 is admin, Account 2 is "staff" and had access to almost everything, Account 3 is guest, Account 4 is for Apple TV streaming so we don't leave one of our accounts open while entertaining guests.
I was doing something that request that I run Repair Disk Permissions, which I did from the admin account. After doing so, Account 2 is pretty much read only: can't delete files off of the desktop, can't open certain applications, can't sync iphone to itunes, and many other little issues.  One of the issues during iPhone sync is that it cannot write to address book <which there are many threads out there on just this as well>.
It seems to me that it's a permissions issue but repairing disk permission isn't helping, as that's what seems to have corrupted the account in the first place.
What is the most efficient way to resolve this?  Should I create a new user account and move all the files over?  If I do that, will iTunes sync ok with the iPhone or will it not recognize it and ask to wipe the data from the iPhone?  What is the best sure-fire way to migrate Account 2 to a new user account and not lose anything in iTunes/iPhoto and still be able to sync with iPhone.
    Thanks!

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chmod -R a+rX
followed by a space. Next, drag the folder into the Terminal window, press Enter, and type your password; nothing will appear in the Terminal while the password is being typed. If you want to be able to make changes to the folder as well, use rwX instead of rX. You may need to log out and back in for the changes to be recognized. To turn it off, use go-rwX after the -R.

  • Repair Disk Permissions - ACL found but...

Suddenly Repair Disk Permissions gives an exceptionally long list of "ACL found but not expected on xxxxxxxx" and apparently is unable to carry out repairs as each run of the "repair" brings up the same long list. Additionally, the reason I ignited the disk permissions repairs was that my PowerBook Pro suddenly appeared extremely slow - taking up to 3 hours to update a single application. I'd appreciate any feedback on correcting  this ongoing issue.
    Thanks - Earl

Thanks so much for your advise, Linc, and sorry for the delay in getting back - things have ben pretty hectic since. I've now done as you suggested but rather than trying to find the log for the date the issue started (scrolling through what seems like miles and miles of lines of data) I've copied and am posting here a more recent section of the log taken while attempting to install an update to OS X 10.10.2 for the past 20 hours. Any help would be highly appreciated.

  • Running "Repair Disk Permissions"

I recently brought my imac into the apple store to resolve a noise issue. The mac genius recommended I first back up all my data (which I have now done) and run "Repair Disk Permissions". I did that and the message I got after it finished was "ACL found but not expected on Applications/Utilities"
"ACL found but not expected on Applications"
"ACL found but not expected on Library"
What does that mean? Any steps I need to take at this point?

Search the forums for ACL, sort by date, and review the many posts on the subject, then see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925

  • Repair disk permissions for an external RAID drive?

    Hello,
We are able to repair disk permissions on the hard drive, but can it be done on an external SCCI RAID drive? Is there software that is recommended that will repair and fix issues such as if the RAID drive was improperly removed without ejecting the drive? Or is that not needed?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

DiskWarrior repairs your directory, throws in some limited optimization (iPhoto's open in half the time is about all really), so if your "directory is out of order" it's not that big a deal really.
It's good to have on the shelf if you have a lot of Mac's, but ever since Tiger rolled around it seemed a lot of directory problems have disappeared on single user machines. It's pretty expensive for it's limited options.
With a RAID O (stripe) setup you should Disk Utility Erase w/Zero before setting up the RAID and laying data down. (in fact this is wise for all new drives at least once)
RAID O's should always be cloned (in the case of a boot RAID O) or backed up quite often because if one drive goes the whole set with data is lost.
Mirroring (RAID 1) is only necessary for extremely valuable one time data captures where a hard drive failure would be awlful. It doesn't make a good backup because any corruption, mistakes etc get immediatly written to the second drive.
Using automated cloning and backup software is better like (search Apple) DeJaVu. Auto clone the whole boot drive once a week and auto backup certain folders of files nightly.
Since cloning I haven't really too much need for drive maintainance software, if my RAID goes down for a data reason, (hasn't yet in 2 years of 24/7 operation) I simply option boot off the clone and repair/recover/reverse clone. I'm done in a hour, I even go out to eat or something while it's reverse cloning.
A good piece of software to have is (search Apple) OnyX, it's automation section will do a lot of cleanup and fixing certain things. Good to run it about once a month.
To find out more about cloning, visit Carbon Copy Cloner forums, they have donationware software too.

  • Repair disk permissions help

    Hello all,
im fairly new to the macbook and have been reading up on repairing disk permissions as the mac has started to slow down in time
the problem i have is i opened disk utility
and ran verrify disk permisions, it found problems, so i restarted and held comand and r and booted into the recovery console
from there, i chose disk utilities and ran verify disk again, again it found problems, so i ran repair disk permisons, that came  back and repaired succefull,
so just to check i then vefried the permisons again, and once again it found the same problems, so i then re - repaired the permisions, and again it cam back succefull
again i double checked and once again it found the same problems , so im going round in a loop here the problems arnt actually properly fixing?
how can i sort this out?
    any help would be appreciated!
    regards

Those messages are in fact quite similar to the ones Apple mention in the KB.
All the examples you posted are instances of the same symptom: the BOM states a given path is supposed to be a directory but it actually is a symlink to a directory.
A possible cause of this is when something was installed that did not foresee upgrades that would leave multiple versions installed at the same time, then the development team eventually decided that a new version would be needed to co-exist with the old one and such a new version has been installed. The old BOM file still report the directories (or files) as not being symlinks but the new installation actually moved the old data to a directory specific for the old version, installed a new version and then changed the old directory (aka the "unversioned" or "current" path) to a symlink to the latest installation.
You can safely ignore these differences.
While in the past running permission repair used to be a very important periodic maintenance routine, nowadays it's rarely needed and even more rarely useful. It still is a good idea to run it right before and after an important operating system patch update, but it's not really necessary.
It's very common (and has been for a long time) for the tool to report differences, say they have been repaired, and then, if run again, to report the same differences. In those cases you can generally ignore those differences. Only if the repair tool says it failed to repair something you should be concerned.

  • Trying to download a game purchase (Company App Store. Have taken advice from Aspyr Customer Service to repair Disk Permissions, but still download aborts...any suggestions?

Trying to download game purchase (Company of Heroes) from App Store. Failed in mid-download several times. Aspyr Customer Services have shown me how to repair Disk Permissions, but still won't download... any suggestions, please?

Thanks for suggestions. I did use Energy Saver settings, and I did check downloading another app. Last night I tried another download of Company of Heroes, got up to 4GB before bedtime, woke up this morning to find another "error has occurred" message. Extremely frustrating. Have used most of my monthly data allowance on abortive downloads. Maybe Apple made a mistake in relying on huge data downloads. DVDs more reliable!

  • New macbook pro, safari won't open and repair disk permissions did nothing to help

Safari starts, blue bar moves about an inch in search bar, then stops. Then nothing. Tried repairing disk permissions to no avail. Safari still doesn't open. Whatever os x that is installed on new macbook pro's, since just bought on Sunday 10-14-12, is the operating software. The apple store there is no user manual. Strange. So here we are on another, older macbook pro, able to go on internet and see what answers or diagnoses others have tried and trued.

3 days old?, just pack the machine up and tell them you want another one, that this one is a lemon.
They will likely take your word for it and just give you another rather than you demand your money back instead.
If you wait too long then they say you should have brought it back sooner, now have to wait until it's fixed, only to give you more problems later.

I recently repaired disk permissions on my mac HD and now my on-board speakers wont work, the icon is greyed out and only works when my headphones are plugged in

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!
