Repair disk permissions grayed out

Hello,
I have a WD External Drive that I use for Time Machine backup. Recently have had no backup (about 20 days) and finally decided to look into it. I use this one at work and have brought it home to work on what is wrong. Have tried to repair disk permissions, but option is grayed out. I have however been able to repair disk. It took 8 hours to repair disk which reported no problems.
I have tried to copy files from the backup disk to another disk, but it won't work (don't remember exact message-but it was something odd).
From another thread, I was trying to do this command:
sudo /usr/sbin/chown _installer:admin /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
and got this response:
Home-Power-Mac-G5:~ paul$ sudo /usr/sbin/chown _installer:admin /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
Password:
paul is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
so, I then try this command:
ls -leO /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
and get this response:
-rw------- 1 _installer wheel - 266133504 Dec 15 22:03 /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
WHAT do I do now? I want to first back up all files then reformat drive to start anew.

Hi Christopher Graham;
Since Repair Permission is repair the permissions for the system there has to be a system on the partition in order to not have that button ghosted. As far as Disk Utility can tell a Time Machine backup is not a System hence it is ghosted.

Repair using Disk Utility was OK on the volumes, but Repair for the drive was grayed out.
That's very odd.  Is your drive G.U.I.D?
Boot into Safe Mode (Hold Shift-Key), then boot normally.

This worked for burning MP3's no problem
HOWEVER it will not open in the finder, so I can't save any data from my desktop on to a CD/DVD, so my hard Drive is getting clogged
    Got a Hammer?

I loaded at least 20 different BLANK CD's to experiment with.
The same CD's which get spat out when I open it in finder, burn fine when i open them up in I tunes
I've already bought a new drive and the same problem occurs as when i had the old drive (can't open in finder), so i believe the bad drive and bad CD premise has been troubleshot.
It seems like it won't recognize the Drive or CD when i try to launch a CD from the finder
The blank CD's burn music fine when I open it up in I tunes, but not when I try to open it up in the finder when i try to put data on the CD's.

  • Repair disk permissions "greyed out"

We have a G5 with 2 internal hard drives that we use as a server. I can run "repair disk permissions" on one drive, but on the other the choices for repair or verify disk permissions is greyed out. Why is this and how can I repair the permissions on the one drive?

    2 possibilities come to mind.
    (1) The disk in question does not have Mac OS X installed on it (required for permission repair).
    (2) The disk in question does not have suitable files in the /Library/Receipts folder (such a folder doesn't exist, I guess, if OS X isn't there - see (1)).

  • Disk Utility Help! There is no Mac HDD shown under my Hard drive.  Repair disk is grayed out.

I can't repair my Mac HDD in Disk Utility.  Nothing is popping up under my Hard Drive.  Please Help!

Yes, it matters. You need to repair the hard drive with the Install disc of the version of the operating system which is installed on the hard drive.
Try starting up in Safe Mode as an alternative to using the OS Install DVD in order to repair the hard drive.
Once started up in Safe Mode, you can click on the Apple logo in the upper left of the display and choose "About This Mac" to find out important information about the MacBook. What information is listed there?
After starting up in Safe Mode, try starting up normally and then go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and repair permissions on the named boot volume.
I suppose you are having problems, or you would not be needing to repair the hard drive? You may want to let us know what problems you are experiencing.
Please include the exact model of the MacBook. You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html
Also, which version of the OS is installed, how much RAM is installed, and what it the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it?

  • Unusual repair disk permissions!

I'm fa-reakin' out! For some reason, my new iMac started being real buggy. I ran a 'repair disk permissions' since the 'repair disk' was grayed out (?), and this is what was recorded in the log:
Does any one know what's up? What is a SUID file and how have I corrupted it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    This is normal...
You downloaded the 10.5.1 update from Software Update.... Yes?
If you download the large 110 MB update file for 10.5.1 directly from Apple, you will get rid of all the SUID except for one...
Apple says this is nothing to worry about.

  • Verify/repair permissions grayed out in disk utility

I recently replaced my main hard drive and now when I go into Disk Utility the option to verify and repair disk permissions is not available on the other drives that were in the machine before the upgrade
I am thinking it's a permission issue but not sure what needs to be set to fix it

No problem. It puzzled me for a while. Now I check it every time I format a drive since DU doesn't correctly set the permissions needed. It's a pain that when you clone one startup drive to another, say for backup, and erase the destination in advance that the drive's ownership and permissions will be wrong. Then you try repairing permissions like the OP did and find those options are grayed out, and you are staring at the monitor trying to figure out why. PITA.

I recently repaired disk permissions on my mac HD and now my on-board speakers wont work, the icon is greyed out and only works when my headphones are plugged in

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

  • Repair Permissions Grayed Out On External Drive

I was having some strange issues with my firewire disk in Final Cut Pro so I decided to repair the premissons using disk utility. For some reason "repair premissions" is grayed out. I did a repair disk and everything showed to be fine, but repair premissions is still grayed out.
Any idea what's going on? Or what I should do?
    Thanks.

    Rick,
Did you ever solve this problem? I'm having the exact same issue. I have a Late 2011 MBP 17" with the i7 2.5. I have 16GB RAM installed and a Samsung 830 250GB SSD in the original HD spot with a 750GB Hybrid drive in the optibay. When a heavy load is being placed on the 750gb drive, it'll unmount and I will get the "didn't eject" error. I have to turn it off for about 5 minutes then boot it to have the drive recognized again. I especially notice this when I'm running VMWare Fusion along with my Mac and the Windows side is having to do some "hard" work.

  • How to repair disk permissions inside Time Machine?

I need to restore my .sites file for iWeb from Time Machine, but when I try I get the following error:
"The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." What IS restored are a few (10 or so) .jpg files that were part of my site that once contained thousands of pictures, dozens of movies, and three years of work. The file details inside Time Machine ("Quick View") is 972MB, but again -- what is actually restored is only about 10 pics of a mb each.
Does anyone know how to repair disk permissions for a file inside Time Machine? In Disk Utility the button to repair permissions is grayed out when I select Time Machine volume.
    Much thanks in advance!

I have the same issue (and circumvented it by copying the files with "cp" from the unix shell). The permissions on the TM disk don't really look wrong, and the fact that I can copy the files means that they aren't read protected.
There seems to be some serious bug in Time Machine here, my guess is that the TM restore operation somehow does things in the wrong order (like copying with preserved access lists to a temporary location and then try to move the files from there. This won't work since the files will be protected with access lists from accidental removal on the TM disk).

  • Disk Utility can't Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"

I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!
Get Info on this volume showed:
    Ownership & Permissions:
    You can "Read & Write"
    Details:
    Owner: admin
    Access: "Read & Write"
Ignore ownership on this volume: checked or unchecked STILL grayed out!
Other partitions on the SAME drive are able to do "Very Disk Permissions" and
"Repair Disk Permissions" (as they are NOT grayed out !) The ONLY difference
between the one (CAN'T) and the rest partitions is that one (CAN'T) has
owner by "admin", and the rest partitions (OK to veryify pewrmissions) are owner
    by "system". ANY CLUE ?
    -DC

The options to verify or repair permissions are only available on a disk with Mac OS X 10.2 or newer installed, and all Mac OS X versions set the owner of the partition containing them to system when installed.

  • Disk Utility & Repair Disk Permissions & Unknown User on External Seagate

I have a new iMac running Leopard and don't do stupid things to my mac. I have a couple external Seagate Freeagent drives but 1 of them is giving me a little trouble. So I figure, I'll try to repair disk permissions on it but the problem is when I go into Disk Utility, the Repair Disk Permissions option is NOT available. It's there, I just can't select it; it's grayed out. Why? I'm an admin! The other externals have this option available but not this one, so I'm not really sure what to do. I've about 300gb of family movies on it that I'd rather not wipe out just to be able to do a disk permission repair.
Whenever I do a command+i on the drive I do see an UNKNOWN user but this article, http://www.pcworld.com/article/145425-1/quickand_easy_folder_sharing_in105.html, leads me to believe that Apple hasn't done jack squat to allow us to fix the problem.
    Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    mrpeepers wrote:
I don't think that statement is true.
I have 3 externals and can repair disk permission on all but 2. All my externals are for storage purposes and non have OSX installed, so that fact that I can repair disk permissions on them sort of contradicts what you say, however, the effectiveness of running a repair disk permission on a drive that doesn't have OSX may be nothing.
I don't know how you manage to repair permissions on externals without system files on them but what I said is quite true. Repair permissions ONLY checks permissions of system files against the database of correct permissions. It wouldn't know what to do with any other files and never touches them. It should also not be possible on non OS X drives. I've never seen it enabled on any of my external or secondary drives. I really wonder why and how it was enabled on your external drives.
I did have Tiger installed for 3 months before I got Leopard, but my externals have known nothing but Leopard.
That doesn't matter. the ownership of files on your external were set in Tiger and it remains in leopard. that's what causes the "unknown" user to show up.
The problem I'm having with one of the drives is that starting yesterday it's having difficulties mounting. Sometimes I restart the computer and the drive doesn't show. So in order to get it to show, I have to power down the external (which is and appears to be running) and then power it back up, and if that doesn't work, usually reseating the USB works.
Then again... My problems started happening after I installed CandyBar and applied some folder changes. I have since dumped it.
whatever problems you have with that external they have absolutely nothing to do with Candy bar. all candy bar does is change a few icon files on your main hard drive. that can have no effect on mountability of anything.
This sounds to me like a hardware problem with your external. the drive could be failing. the USB bus could be failing either on the drive or on the computer. One thing you could do is check to see if there are any firmware upgrades for that drive. Look at the manufacturer's website. also try testing the drive with another computer if you can.
On another note... Anyone use CandyBar and NOT have any problems or really like it? Maybe it was just a coincidence.
yes, I use it and REALLY like it. no problems whatsoever.

  • Repair Disk Permissions Unavailable in Disk Utility

I just went to repair the Disk Permissions on one of my 4 internal hard drive and the tabs for Verify & Repair Disk Permissions were grayed out. I checked the other internal hard drives as well as my external drives connected via SATA and Firewire and the tabs are all the same. The only drive that the tabs are available is my internal startup drive. I have a memory that these tabs to verify and repair have always been available on all drives - am I remembering incorrectly? Any ideas? Thanks.

    roam:
Repair Permissions is only available to do, on the drive that you are booted into.
I wondered about that, and before my previous post I tested it by launching DU while booted from my internal HDD and connected to an external FW HDD with two partitions, as well as to a USB HDD with my Time Machine backup. If I selected the FW HDD (Manufacturer ID) or either volume on it I could Verify or Repair Disk Permissions, as well as Verify or Repair Disk. It will Repair the TM backup, but not do anything with Disk Permissions. Of course, I am booted from Snow Leopard and did not test this while booted from an earlier OS, but, if I recall correctly, it worked the same way in Tiger and Panther.

  • Constantly having to repair disk permissions after hanging system

From the time I purchased this I've had ongoing issues with the java, flash, OS updates causing the computer to hang forever. Sometimes I end up having to press the off button because Command Q and Command/Option/Escape won't allow a force quit even after a 20 minute wait. I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Can anyone see the issue or tell me what I need to do to fix this thing???

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

  • Repair Disk Permissions Issues

I'm not sure I am posting this in the correct community but here goes . . .
I have a 17" Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It is almost 2 years old and I have 4 gb RAM.
Recently, it seems to be slowing down and I have to run repair disk permissions 2-3 times a week to recoup a little speed. I also delete my Firefox cache regularly to try to gain a little there. I do make a few videos in iMovie and initially I thought that was the problem but this week I have not really worked in iMovie much and it is still slow. There seems to be some issues in the log of the repair permissions. I hope they show in this image. I don't know what these mean or how to fix them. It is the "permissions differ" entries I am confused about.

You can ignore those permissions per support article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21090
Since you brought up iMove, I suspect your storage is nearly full as this most certainly causes the computer to slow down. video files are the biggest culprit.
Look in your Activity Monitor and reduce the drive space by copying to a external, Disk Utility HFS+ formatted external powered drive of unnecessary files so your boot drive is ideally below 50% filled (yea I know but the computer slows down after that) and not more than 75% filled.
Once you have done that. Get another newer external powered HFS drive and download the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the internal drive to the external.
Hold option and boot off the external clone, test it out then use Disk Utility to erase the internal and then reverse clone the external onto the internal, this will defragment and optimize your drive so the OS and programs are on the fast part of the drive, not the slow parts.
Reboot into the internal and run off of the free OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.

Sir speedy machine here we come!
Now of course you may have other issues that could be causing your slow down, like not enough RAM or some sort of failed process or leftover program, tweaks or simply a slow Internet.
You can opt to simply reinstall OS X 10.6 ( by holding c and booting off the installer disk ) over your installed version (doesn't touch files or programs) then immediatly Software Updating until clear, that will clean anything hanging out in OS X.
If you still have slowdowns, then it's in what geeks call "User land" basically something installed outside of root, like a program or only runs in user, not in OS X.
For that you need to create a new user, transfer your files via the Shared Drop and wean yourself off the old user and finally delete it. Also install all new versions of your third party programs removing the originals first.
    That should do it.
