Repair Disk Permissions showing Warnings

I ran a verify disk permissions and repair permissions today and got a few things I am not sure about. Any help is appreciated.
1. Warning: SUID file "Applications/Utilites/ODBC Administrator.app/Contenets/Resources/iodbcadmintool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
2. Warning: SUID file "Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/Resources/installAssistant" has been modified and will not be repaired.
3. User differs on "Applications/iCal.app/Contents/Resources/App-empty.icns", should be 0, user is 501.
4. User differs on "Applications/iCal.app/Contents/Resources/iCalDockExtra.bundle/Contents/Resourc es/App-empty.icns", should be 0, user is 501.
Should I be worried about any of these? If so, how in the world do I correct them?
Thanks,
Sarah

SUID messages, especially the ones concerning "admin" group writable files, should only be ignored after verifying that they are false positives, which the Leopard "repair permissions" generates in abundance. So odds are, they are nothing to worry about, but to blindly dismiss them is poor practice.
Thank you biovizier! I recently saw someone happily accept the advice to ignore it all, when they had a number of SUID files modified that rang alarms for me, as the files modified included a shell, binaries involving passwords, login, and sudo, plus something for writing configurations and doing batch operations. I don't know, and have never seen anyone explain, just exactly what "has been modified" means. Does it mean that the file itself has been changed? Or what? In the case I saw I would have been worried that the things modified were exactly the sorts of things some deep and very bad malware would need to change to make one's computer into a zombie or worse.
The advice to simply ignore everything, no matter what, is precisely why Apple should do something about this mess. It is rather like everyone getting hardened to routinely giving a password to install just any old thing, even when the application in question does not really need it, and should (and could) have been set-up to be installed by a simple drag 'n drop. That sort of thing leads people to get very sloppy about things that could be serious security hazards.

  • Problem with Disk Utility/Repair Disk Permissions/Show details

I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and everything very nearly went well, thank you.
Very nearly, because at the end of repairing disk permissions, when opening "Show details", now there is appearing following remark:
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreVideo.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- ."
This message stays on, even after repeated repair runs.
    Any reason to be worried?

It's innocuous. It's the result of some upgrades. Nothing about which to be concerned. The message will be repeated each time you repair permissions.

  • Repair disk permissions shows problem

trying to get a printer installed I ran repair disk permissions and came up with a problem.
Question, how do I resolve it?
message is: System/Library/CoreS cannot be repaired.
I need advise from someone a lot smarter than me.
I have not noted any problems with any component or aspect of the os other than this one Epson printer which will not install.
Not sure if re-install of SL would correct problem or cause changes to current setup.

no, this is not the full message. it's still truncated. there is no such thing as "System/Library/CoreS". there is a directory "System/Library/CoreServices" which contains a lot of stuff. the message likely refers to something in that directory. but as I said, all such SUID messages are harmless and should be ignored.

  • This history look right? After Repairing Disk Permissions WARNINGS exist.

I just repaired disk permissions on my iMac, does the history look OK? Plenty of WARNINGS at the end of the history. I am not too concerned with the ACL stuff.

reinstalling 10.5.6 combo update might get rid of some of them but isn't really necessary.

  • "Repair Disk Permissions" keeps showing the same permission differences

After the recent software updates, I suddenly cannot use my eFax Messenger. This happened once before, but I was able to fix the problem by running "Repair Disk Permissions" in Disk Utility.
This time "Repair Disk Permissions" did not fix the problem. Not only that, I noticed the same permission differences showing up again and again when I repeated Repair Disk Permissions.
Is the permissions database no longer accurate? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve the permission differences? I notice that others have reported similar issues on this forum, but no definite resolutions have been posted.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

..."As long as the repair ends up with the message 'repairs complete' or words to that effect, you are OK."...
I don't know who started with the "repairs complete means everything is fine" business, but they were wrong and it is repeated far too often by too many people on this site.
Considering all of the messages erroneously being dismissed as "informational", it is ironic that the one message that is actually just "informational" is the one being given special significance.
The "repairs complete" message only means that the process has stopped. Try starting to repair permissions, then immediately click the "Stop permissions repair" button. Try logging in to a non-admin account and start a run -- when a password is requested, cancel. Try repairing permissions when there are problems with the permissions database. You will see messages such as "Stopped by user", "insufficient privileges" or "underlying task reported failure on exit, but in every case, the report will end with the "Permissions repair complete" message.
With respect to the OP's question, the overall "repair permissions" system as it stands in 10.5 has the appearance of an unfinished product (it received major revisions in the transition from 10.4). Without specific details, all anyone can say is that the error messages are likely false positives - except for any true positives that might be present among them.

  • Repair Disk Permissions Issues

I'm not sure I am posting this in the correct community but here goes . . .
I have a 17" Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It is almost 2 years old and I have 4 gb RAM.
Recently, it seems to be slowing down and I have to run repair disk permissions 2-3 times a week to recoup a little speed. I also delete my Firefox cache regularly to try to gain a little there. I do make a few videos in iMovie and initially I thought that was the problem but this week I have not really worked in iMovie much and it is still slow. There seems to be some issues in the log of the repair permissions. I hope they show in this image. I don't know what these mean or how to fix them. It is the "permissions differ" entries I am confused about.

You can ignore those permissions per support article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21090
Since you brought up iMove, I suspect your storage is nearly full as this most certainly causes the computer to slow down. video files are the biggest culprit.
Look in your Activity Monitor and reduce the drive space by copying to a external, Disk Utility HFS+ formatted external powered drive of unnecessary files so your boot drive is ideally below 50% filled (yea I know but the computer slows down after that) and not more than 75% filled.
Once you have done that. Get another newer external powered HFS drive and download the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the internal drive to the external.
Hold option and boot off the external clone, test it out then use Disk Utility to erase the internal and then reverse clone the external onto the internal, this will defragment and optimize your drive so the OS and programs are on the fast part of the drive, not the slow parts.
Reboot into the internal and run off of the free OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Sir speedy machine here we come!
Now of course you may have other issues that could be causing your slow down, like not enough RAM or some sort of failed process or leftover program, tweaks or simply a slow Internet.
You can opt to simply reinstall OS X 10.6 ( by holding c and booting off the installer disk ) over your installed version (doesn't touch files or programs) then immediatly Software Updating until clear, that will clean anything hanging out in OS X.
If you still have slowdowns, then it's in what geeks call "User land" basically something installed outside of root, like a program or only runs in user, not in OS X.
For that you need to create a new user, transfer your files via the Shared Drop and wean yourself off the old user and finally delete it. Also install all new versions of your third party programs removing the originals first.
    That should do it.

  • Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
    1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
    2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
    Please help!!!

    Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.

Have you checked in Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a high ammount of CPU?
Sometimes a process can run amok and use more of the CPU than it should, potentially causing a slowdown and/or heat issues and/or other issues. To check on this, first use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up may not show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop downmenu > click on the column heading titled % CPU (this will update continuously, showing the percentage each process is using) > toward the bottom left of the window, click on CPU (this will show % Idle, which will also tell you how much of the CPU is being used).

By chance is it referring to RAM usage?

  • Apple: Repair "Repair Disk Permissions"

The Leopard version of Repair Disk Permissions is broke. No matter what it is doing behind the screen, it comes up with the chirpy "Repairing Disk Permissions. Estimated time: Less than 1 minute" then proceeds to wait five minutes (on a 160 GB MacBook Pro of recent vintage) before starting to move the bar from its initial, deceptive, 20% fulfilled position.
This performance and feedback flies in the face of Apple's own software behavioral edicts.
After the five-minute wait, it takes an additional 4:30 to move the bar to the end, even when it's the second run on the same drive. The reported times are NEVER accurate, never even approximate until the last 50 seconds.
And don't even get me started with all the reported failures to fix anything that consistently show up every single time.
In five minutes (300 seconds) my computer has the ability to impose 4.4 Billion computational cycles on the task of sorting out whatever ails my hard disk--per second. That's just a TRILLION point three total mathematical operations that might be brought to bear on thinking about what to do before starting to access the disk and fix its errant map of data.
To give that some scale, at one second per math problem, that equals around 42 thousand years. Which ought to be time enough to evolve the program into a more advanced version...

It's an interesting but irrelevant observation.
Disk Repair is not a mathematical operation - it obviously involves many disk reads - often the slowest component on a computer in terms of access times. Should any repairs be required - the system will then write and likely re-read to ensure the write was successful.
You are trying to figure out future events - how long the next action will take based on prior events - sometimes things change that make past performance a poor estimate of future performance.
As for estimating times - I've programmed this - and observed many attempts to do so - few work well or offer estimates anywhere near accurate. Observe the estimated times to complete a download in iTunes or the time to copy a file. I have seen many cases where the estimates said "10 seconds" and I waited minutes for them to complete.

  • Constantly repairing disk permissions for Spotlight to work

I am constantly having to use Disk Utility and repair my disk permissions in order to get Spotlight to work. Often I'll type something such as an application and the only thing that will show up is the Definition from the dictionary.
Repairing the disk permissions seems to fix the problem, but it doesn't take long before I need to once again go in and repair in order to get Spotlight working again. I've tried dragging the whole hard drive into the exclusions list and then removing it again so the index will rebuild. That also works but again only lasts a short time.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I hear a lot about 'defraggin' in Windows. Is there something similar in Mac, ie: is Repairing Disk Permissions something similar?
They're entirely different things. A "defragment" operation moves files around to combine split segments of files and consolidate free space. A "repair permissions" operation examines the permissions settings of system files and resets any that seem to be wrong.

  • Problem repairing disk permissions

Hey all, I'm trying to help a friend with a sick macbook I think it's a pro, but I definitely know he's running OS 10.5.
I tried to repair his disk permissions in the Disk Utility, and I keep getting the same three messages- "ACL found but not expected in system folder", "ACL found but not expected in Library", and the same thing in one other folder which I forget right now....
I ran the "repair disk permissions" operation three times in a row and keep getting the same three messages. Each running takes about ten minutes and the progress bar hangs at about 15% completion for 90% of the operation. Then in the last minute, it charges across the screen, the operation completes and those messages pop up.
I've never had anything like this happen (when repeated attempts at repairing seemingly don't accomplish the repair of permissions).
Any advice? No other repairs are being logged.

Leopard 10.5 has Access Control Lists enabled and uses them for some of the system folders. The Disk Utility is just informing you that an Access Control List was found, but the information used to repair the permissions doesn't show one. Probably what happened is the "apply to enclosed items" was used from the Get Info window, which added ACLs to the enclosed items. The Get Info window doesn't show extended permissions very well, so applying the permissions to enclosed items shouldn't be used on system files and folders.

  • Failure to repair disk permissions

    Hello fellow Mac users;
I really hope that someone here can help me with my issue.
I was doing some "spring cleaning" and deleted a whole bunch of unneeded files from my Mac, however I did not touch any system files!
When I restarted the Mac after all that it just showed the "thinking screen" the very first one with the Apple Symbol and it just "thought" for about 3 hours without bringing up the log in screen.
So I used my MAC OS X Installation Disk to get to the Disk Utility. I verified the disk and it said that the volume seemed to be okay. However when I tried to repair the disk permissions, I had a drop down window that said "permissions repair failure upon exit" and then in the main window it said the repair disk permissions was complete.
I'm scared now to try another restart and maybe crash my Mac totally! Help!!!
    Thank you for any input!

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I recommend saving all personal files including Address Book contacts, Mail accounts etc to an external disk or DVD immediately, at least for peace of mind should your system go down. Your cleaning exercise has likely caused an issue with installed receipts. Have a look in the folder Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts - all *.pkg installations (ie not those you drag-and-drop to install) store a receipt which tell OSX which permissions are required for the application. Disk Utility looks here when repairing permissions. If the names of your programs in /Library/Receipts are still present it's likely cleaning has corrupted the folders boms and db inside this directory. There is really only one option I personally would feel comfortable with, to perform a clean install (not archive and install) of OSX once I had saved my personal data. Don't bother backing up applications, those should all be clean installed as well on a fresh copy of OSX - if you need to remind yourself which 3rd party applications to reinstall afterwards, make a note beforehand including their serial numbers if licensed. If you own a paid-up .Mac account, goto System Preferences/.Mac/sync and select which essentials to back-up to your iDisk for convenient access following the reinstall.
I strongly advise against restarting your machine until you have saved everything you want to keep, should the worst happen.

  • Disk Utility can't Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"

I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!
Get Info on this volume showed:
    Ownership & Permissions:
    You can "Read & Write"
    Details:
    Owner: admin
    Access: "Read & Write"
Ignore ownership on this volume: checked or unchecked STILL grayed out!
Other partitions on the SAME drive are able to do "Very Disk Permissions" and
"Repair Disk Permissions" (as they are NOT grayed out !) The ONLY difference
between the one (CAN'T) and the rest partitions is that one (CAN'T) has
owner by "admin", and the rest partitions (OK to veryify pewrmissions) are owner
    by "system". ANY CLUE ?
    -DC

The options to verify or repair permissions are only available on a disk with Mac OS X 10.2 or newer installed, and all Mac OS X versions set the owner of the partition containing them to system when installed.
