Repair Disk with CD

Hi, is it safe to repair disk using the install cd? WHat exactly does it do? I had an error from Onyx asking me to do this. I just don't want my system preferences and system configuration all messed up. Thanks for the 411.

Since the install DVD is usually older than your current OS, it is recommended that you use the disk utility in your utilities directory. The only reason to use the DVD for repair is if the HD needs to be unmounted for real extensive repairs.
If you are only concerned with permissions, you definitely should be using the disk utility already on your computer, not the one on the install DVD.

    Hi
I tried diskwarrior but but couldn't get to the rebuild directory page.
When I hit the agree button the screen goes grey with a spinning wheel then Imac reboots itself.
Tech support at D.warrior suggested resetting pram and open firmware but this makes no difference I'm awaiting further suggestions from them.
    Any ideas here?
I ran a hardware test which showed nothing wrong.
Just read about target disk mode can link up and access my imac from my Ibook and repair the Imac with diskwarrior through the Ibook?

  • Problems after repairing disk with Mac OS X install Discs

Having been experiencing slowness in my iMac, I tried to verify disk and found that my HD Volume needed to be repaired. However, the "Repair Disk" button was gray. I later learned from online mac discussions that I should reboot my iMac with the Mac OSx install Disc. I followed the steps and then got the answer that there was nothing to be repaired.
The next thing I knew was that I could not get out of there. By choosing "Restart", I was bought back to choosing the language and installing the disc. Not wanting to do that I went around and around and finally had no choice but installing the Disc 1 and then 2. At one point, I was asked if I wanted to move previous files to the new location (don't remember the exact words), I said no. I was astonished to find out very soon that my computer was put back at its original state, meaning all the applications were empty.
I managed to get my safari and email (Microsoft Entourage) back. I transfered all photos from the "Previous System" folder to the present iPhoto. However, they are only sorted by year. all the categories and sub-categories that I so painstakingly created were gone, so were the keywords.
Among other problems, my iTune wouldn't open unless I have Mac OS X 10.4.9 (mine is 10.4.4). I am quite desperate at this moment. I know the previous settings are somewhere but have no idea how to bring them back.
I hope someone can help me get out of this mess. Thank in advance.
P.S. my iMac is much faster now. That is the only good news.
    LN

There is an option to +select the drive to restart from+ (don't remember the exact wording) in the Installer's menu. If you previously set the startup disk to be the disc in the optical drive, it will continue to restart from the Mac OS X installation disk until you change it. Alternately, you could press and hold the Option key at startup to bring up Startup Manager. This will allow you to select the disk to use for startup. For future reference...
If you did a complete reinstallation of the OS, you need to select Software Update from the Apple menu. This will get to you to the latest version of Tiger, which is 10.4.11.

  • Unable to verify and repair disk, with my new 10.5

I'm trying to work out some problems on my older G4 desktop (with lamp bass). I upgraded recently from 10.3 to 10.5 (bought new box with the 10.5 disk). I have 750 dramm.
I wish to verify and repair the disk. I can't figure out h ow with the new 10.5 disk I have.
In the past, I would boot up my computers with the 10.3 and 10.4 disks (I've had both) with "C" key down, and then I could use the utility.
That does not work with this new Leopard disk. Won't boot up with the "C" (or the "option" key for that matter).
That normal? And how do I repair disk for the install disk?
    thx..
    Jon

    Jon,
The Leopard disk works (or is supposed to work) just like previous versions of OS X. In other words, booting the G4 while holding down the "C" key should boot the machine to the installer.
A couple of things might get in the way of this happening, though. First, let's establish that your G4 meets the minimum requirements for Leopard. For a G4, the important item would be at least an 867 MHz processor (if I'm not mistaken). Are we still "go?"
Also, let's eliminate the "duh!!!" possibility of a third-party or wireless keyboard, which may not be supported by the startup manager.
If you meet the minimum requirements, and you're using a standard, wired USB keyboard, your PRAM may be causing an issue. This happens, sometimes. To clear this up, first flush out the PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R at startup, and continue to hold it until you hear a total of four startup chimes. When you hear the fourth, immediately switch to holding the "C" key (with the Leopard disk inserted, of course).
If this doesn't get you booted to the installer, there may be something wrong with the installer disk.

  • Repairing disk with another installation disk??

My startup disk is almost full so I tried to repair disk in Disk Utility but only 'verify disk' was available, which led to the following error message: "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk." I have recently moved countries and cannot seem to find my installation disk anywhere (stupid, I know). Is there another option, such as using someone else's installation disk (since nothing is actually installed from the installation disk in this process, right?) or does it have to be my own installation disk? It is an old MacBook (2007), running OSX 10.6.3. Thanks in advance!

Okay so I got my hands on another installation disk, inserted the disk and restarted the computer while holding down the 'c' key. But when the computer started up an error message appeared saying "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer. If you want to restore from a Time Machine backup, click 'Restore from Backup.'" When I started down that path of restoring from my time machine backups it warned me that everything on my startup disk would be wiped, and that seemed like a bad idea, so I backed out of that process and am now not sure how to proceed. I have read that with OS X newer than 10.5 I should be able to do it via wifi, without having to use an installation disk...?

  • Repair Disk with DU

I tried to repair my internal backup drive and when prompted for a user name and password I entered my name and my normal password. I received an error message as one or the other being wrong. I don't ever remember answering any of these questions when I installed the drive. I never even set up any accounts. Is there any help for me?
    Thanks

    John Huber1
“You don't need to boot from the install disc to run DU Repair on the backup drive. I do it all the time.
Are permissions enabled on the backup drive?”
John: If I’m able to repair permissions on the backup drive does that mean its enabled? Why do I have to enter a user name and password when it comes to repairing the drive?
I have repaired permissions on my backup drive while booted from my HD, I just wasn’t able to repair it with. I did boot with the install disk and was able to repair the backup drive with DU. Thanks for the help, In the future when I boot from the install disks I’ll repair both drives.

  • Repair disk with disk utility?

sry I'm kind of a noob with mac's and I have this problem I ran into when trying to partition my mac with bootcamp assistant. An error message came up when I clicked on partition saying Verification failed. This disk could not be partitioned use disk utility to repair this disk. So then I go to disk utility to repair disk and it is greyed out? is this because I need a cd to perform this task if it is where can I get one of these cd's as I no longer have mine
any help is much appreciated thank you

Yes....you will need to be able to reboot from an install DVD or an external drive that has OSX installed on it.....(Repair) is greyed out because you can not repair a mounted OSX volume......
You can get new install DVD's by calling Apple Customer Care and giving them the serial# of your MacBook..... and a fee for the DVD's...

  • How can I "repair disk" with Repair disk grayed out?

My external back-up has been complaining of late, Time Machine can no longer access it, and now, after trying Verify Disk, it stopped that process and told me to use Repair Disk.
Repair Disk is grayed out. But my WD unit isn't even six months old.
    Where do I turn?

I found a Grab of part of the response from Verify Disk.
If that's impossible to read, (1) blame Apple and (2) let me know -- I'll punch it up.

  • Repairing disk with disk utility question

    hello,
I had a few questions regarding disk utility
    1. I have 2 user account on my computer, one admin, one regular
    2. run disk utility from regular account...tells me i need to repair disk
    3. run disk utility from admin account...tells me the disk is fine
    4. I want to run the repair disk function from my boot disk to be safe
    5. will it erase my data or corrupt any data at all...I do have backup, just want to be prepared for anything

Hello! You can't repair the boot disk unless booted from the install cd/dvd. It sshould do just fine repairing the hd while booted from the cd/dvd but it's always a good idea to have everything backed up. Personally I use multiple bootable clones. Tom

  • Can't repair disk with Disk Warrior

    Earlier I posted this message:
I have used the Tiger installation disc to attempt to repair disk permissions and repair disk. When I run verify disk, it indictes "keys out of order" and gives me a "repair disk" message. When I run the repair disk from the installation DVD, the blue bar moves about 1/2 way. Then everything freezes.
The reply advised me to get Disk Warrior, which I did. I am attempting to rebuild the directory and I get a parenthetic message (Speed inhibited by disk malfunction). The wheel spins for hours and ultimately the arrow reappears and is frozen. Any idea where to go next?

    Hi, Lucy -
If the damage to the directory is substantial, it can take DiskWarrior a while to fix it. Suggest you let it sit there and run - it may not appear that anything is happening, but it probably is.

  • Repairing disk with fsck

    Hi,
I have a problems with my laptop running 10.7.2, it would appear several files are corrupted and cannot be copied.  When I try to copy them I get an error (-36) and if I try to use terminal it halts the copy and reports an 'input/output' error.  When I run fsck on the drive it reports an error 'incorrect block count for file' and invalid index key but also says the problem cannot be corrected whilst the drive is in use and exits with an error.  My initial thinking was to boot from a USB recovery disk and run fsck from terminal but ran into problems as it appears that fsck will only look at the boot volume.  So how do you get fsck to repair this?  Surely the boot volume will always be mounted and in use so fsck is actually reporting an error it cannot fix?
Strangely when I tried running fsck in single user mode it did not report any problems.
Disk Utility also reports no problems and the S.M.A.R.T. status is fine.
Any help would be appreciated as I could really do with recovering this file.  I do have a backup drive but had not run it since creating this file!
    James.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have already tried running disk utility both in normal and single user mode and it reports no errors.  I also tried running it from the command line with no errors reported!
    James.

  • Repair Disk is not successful

While going through a verify/repair disk with OSX open, it said I needed minor repairs.
I booted the OSX installation disk and ran verify/repair disk on my HD and drive. Both times the error said "1 HFS Volume Checked; 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
I then restarted to sign back on and now nor my administrator and guest password will not work.
I booted the OSX installation disk again to reset the password from there. It said it was successful.
I then restarted to sign back in and the passwords still do not work.
What should I do? If I reinstall the OSX all together should this fix the problem (I have everything backed up)? If so, is there ANY way I can access some files before doing so to make sure my backup is the latest (basically, sign back in before deciding to do so). Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Matt, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.
You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from...

There are other ways if you can't get DiskWarrior, let us know.

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. Can I fix a disk with this message?
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
Buy a new Drive. Or  two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.
