Repair HD OSX 10.5.8

I recently tried downloading XBMC onto my macbook and instead of launching, it continues to "quit unexpectedly". After downloading several different versions of the program, I decided to run a diagnostic on my disk drive in Disk Utility. The result was that the disk needed to be repaired. Upon rebooting the macbook, while pressing cmd+R, it still starts up to my login screen. I have tried several times with cmd+R being pressed at different parts of the bootup process. I also attempted to reboot the computer while pressing "alt" during startup, but am only given my HD volume, no option to enter recovery mode. I was hoping someone could help me out. I purchased the computer secondhand and do not have the startup disk. Any suggestions?

Recovery is only available if you have OS X Lion or later. If you have an older version, you need the OS X DVD to repair the hard drive. Contact with Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and hold the C key while your computer is starting up. Then, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (in the menu bar) > Disk Utility, so you can repair your volume. Finally, restart.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
To boot from your install disc, you can do 2 things:
1- Startup the computer while holding the "C" key. This will make the computer startup from the install disc.
2- Using the Startup Manager (startup holding the "Option" key), will bring you to the available startup volumes. Click once on the OS X install disc icon, and then click the "straight" arrow. The computer should then boot to the install disc.
The error that you are receiving may not be repairable with Disk Utility.

I would try running Disk Utility at least 3 times. If all 3 times fail, then you will need Disk Warrior to repair the drive:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Disk Warrior is very good at fixing bad directories, and should give good results if Disk Utility fails.

    Hi.

I can only start from disk. I have restored from the install disc to the macintosh HD and had no luck. I have files such as documents and applications on the HD.
What i see when i verify disk is:

    Invalid catalog record type
    Volume checked fail
    HFS Volume Checked
    Volume needs repair
When i verify it says that volume cant be repaired.
If anyone has any help please let me know and i will reward points.
    Thanks, Ben

disc warrior has been great. I have had to use the computer in firewire disk mode and use my laptop to do all the maintenance on for my desktop. It has rebuilt everything and it all seems fine. The desktop still doesnt start up and i think its because its looking for a disc in the drive which i took out when i thought i didnt need it any more. I need to somehow tell it that i want the startup disc to be macintosh HD not the cd. is there any way of doing this.
Thanks again and i will mark as solved.

  • How to repair Mac OSX 10.4.6

I m trying to reboot with the Apple CD but i cant!!!!
I have already tried to hold the "C" key while booting but it will not do anything.
    Please advice.

To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • OSX Lion won't boot after Bootcamp installation interrupted

Hello, I started a Bootcamp installation on my OSX Lion Mac Pro. Once I realized that I could only use Windows 7, I had to hold off on the installation until I located my Windows 7 disk. I had set the Bootcamp partition size to 100 GB on a 500 GB Drive. Due to threatning weather, I shutdown the computer.
Now the OSX Lion does not boot! I have been reading much information on this topic to see about fixing the problem. I talked to Apple Support and so far it is still not working. I was able to boot using the recovery partition "Disk Utility -> First Aid -> Repair Disk". When I ran Repair Disk there were some errors reported and repaired, then OSX still not booting. I installed Lion on another drive using recovery and that works OK. I was hoping to install Lion on the original drive and still not disturb my data files like music, photos, etc. That volume with OSX is greyed out and does not mount. I am thinking that the GPT had been modified and since Windows was not installed on Bootcamp, there is no way to boot on the original drive /dev/disk2. I read about a backup GPT, so I am wondering if I can use the backup GPT to fix the boot problem.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    David

Thanks for the fast reply. Ill try this again. Did this the first time, but wouldn't boot again. I've since done a,fresh install of Lion, and it created the proper recovery partition. I didn't have this before, because I cloned my old drive, when I upgraded to an SSD drive. Didn't know about the recover partition. Ill try again, and see if I can get it to work.
Just need to figure out the driver situation, with my Nvidia Quadro Mac video. Not worth trying again, if I have to use default generic video drivers.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 won't boot OSX

Since today i have a strange problem booting into Mac. This is how it started out:
I was inside of Mac, and decided to reboot to Windows, to play a match of MW2. I forgot to use the ALT button, so Mac was already booting. I used the on/off switch to turn it off before i started it again. This time i did use the ALT button, and i booted into Windows. I decided later on to boot back to OSX, and it didn't give me any problems.
I wanted to mount a DVD ISO file to watch, and when i mounted it my user account got logged off. I logged back in and tried it again, same problem.
I decided to reboot the system, but this time something wierd happend. Along with the Apple logo i got a grey progress bar, wich went till about 25%. After this bar dissapeared it was just the Apple logo with the rotating gear, and it didn't go any further.
I tried using the installdisk to repair my OSX partition, but whenever i try to repair i get the following:
    Repairing volume completed.
Updating startup support partitions where necessary.
Error: Diskaid cannot repair this disk
(original messages were in dutch, so in translated it. Could be different from the english messages)
Diskaid also shows my OSX partition as grey, instead of the normal black. I can't seem to be able to activate tis volume in Diskaid
After this i tried running Apple Hardware Test, and it didn't give me any errors.
The strange thing is that Windows(bootcamp ofcourse) runs fine. It's Mac OSX that cannot boot.
I don't have backups, and no Time Machine either. Is there a way to get my OSX back up again without having to reinstall everything? Especially because of certain installed Audio Units. I don't have the original license codes anymore of same AU's, so it would be a real pain if i need to reinstall this again.
    I'm using this mac:
    MacBook Pro 15"2,66GHz mid 2009
    500GB 7200RPM Hard Disk
Hope you can help, i really need this one to be back up as soon as possible!
    Thanks in advance!

    Your options are:
    1. DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. Or,
    2. Erase & Install

Hi Rich, it sounds like your MacBook is running well after the archive & install.
when the user login screen came up... and it trashed my Adobe CS2/CS3 installs and Parallels. It trashed them? Are you sure it didn't save them in a folder called, "Previous System" on the top level (root level) of your hard drive? Can't you just re-install them?
Also, you should maintain some type of backup, preferably on a firewire hard drive. If you clone your entire system over to one and make it bootable, you never have to worry.
You can also run Apple Hardware Test to set your mind at ease about hardware issues:
    Using Apple Hardware Test:
    1. Disconnect all external devices from your iMac except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your iMac.
    3. Restart your iMac and hold down the D key as your iMac starts up.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language
    appropriate for your location.
    5. Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
    6. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
    the onscreen instructions.
    7. Apple Hardware Test displays an error code if it detects a problem. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options.

It will keep running through this over and over again then after 5 or 6 tries it says that it cannot repair disk. How can I get it to repair?
BTW, I'm running Repair Disk from an external drive as I have in the past w/o incident.
    Thanks for any help,
    Tony

    Hi Tony,
Sorry you're having problems with 10.4.4. Here's a link to more info about some of the problems people are experiencing with this new update --
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060111082842671
And just a word of caution. As our Beiges are so picky about what happens within the OS, you might want to hold off incremental updates until they've been out for a couple of weeks or so, and Apple has had a chance to tweak it and/or issue a further update to fix bugs. This update in particular is a big transition, as it makes the adjustment to the Intel chip. There seems to be some feeling that 10.4.5 is not far away.
Good luck. Diskwarrior may help. Just be sure to run the Tiger version (3.0.3) and not the earlier version which works with Panther.
    Keep us posted!
    Tina

  • Stubborn permission won't repair

Following a crash (I wasn't there), G4 was stuck at gray startup screen, with endless clickety-clacking drive noise. I restarted, did fsck -y. Repairs were made. Started up, got to user login screen, but still with endless clickety-clack. Ran disc repair form OSX startup disc. No disc repair indicated, but lots of permission repairs (I have been remiss). After a series of: verify/repair/quit/open disc utility/verify/repair...etc., this one remains. Report says that it is repaired, but new verify reveals it again: "./usr/share/man/man1/less.1 should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -r--r--r--" Is this significant? How afraid should I be?
    Dual 867 G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

TechTool might do a better job of finding filesystem problems than fsck or Disk Utility. However, neither fsck or Disk Utility are meant to look for hardware problems. To test hardware, you could either use the Hardware CD that come with your computer or I also believe that TechTools can test hardware. WIth hardware tests, you should keep in mind the following points - if the hardware test finds a problem, then you know that you have a problem. However, if the hardware does not find a problem, that does not mean that you do not have a problem. You could have an intermittent hardware problem which did not show up on a specific test. So, you might run the hardware test over and over in some looping fashion.
If you are getting beeps when you startup, that could also be a sign of a hardware problem. I suggest that you check out: You hear "breaking glass" or "musical beeps" when you turn on your Mac.

  • Boot Camp 3.0 recognises Mac HFS drives but does not list all folders

    Hi
I have just done a clean install of Boot Camp/Windows XP using the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers that come with Snow Leopard, and was pleased to find native support for Mac Drives (HFSJ). Whilst all of the Mac drives in my Mac Pro are recognised and can be opened and explored in Windows explorer, a number of folders in one of the drives didn't show up. I could access them by typing the exact path in windows explorer, but when using the mouse to open the drive a number of folders could not be found. Furthermore, windows applications, such as media libraries, would not pick up any files in the folders that couldn't be seen in explorer.
I went back to OSX to check that all of the folders were indeed present and they were. So in the end I reverted to using my Macdrive software again and all of the folders showed up again and worked as expected. So, it may be that the new bootcamp drivers are not all they are cracked up to be.
Anyone else experienced similar issues, or got any clues as to what I might need to get this working right?
    Thanks
    Nick

I am having that issue, but haven't worried about it since I've only booted to windows 2 times since the upgrade. Both times I've experienced a much more aggravating problem. Both times in order to reboot to OSX I have to use the install disc to repair the OSX drive because something renames it to "disk1s2" plus some counts are invalid. I use Macdrive, but since SL the mac volumes appear just as any other drive icon. Using Parallels or Fusion works as it always has, automatically shutting of Macdrive which leads me to think that Macdrive may be the culprit. Gonna try disabling it completely while running virtual and see if that makes it work. If not it'll just be another aspect of my Mac that Apple updates have made useless.

  • Can't Install Boot Camp Drivers

I installed Windows Xp Professional SP2 on my Laptop, but I lost my Leopard install disc that came with my MacBook Pro, and therefore i cannot install the Boot Camp drivers on my Windows Partition.
Is there any way to get a different copy of the .exe file that contains the Drivers? I need them in order to be able to connect to the internet and to get sound? Does anybody know?
    Thank You.

    Hi and welcome to Discussion,
Apple provides the BootCamp Drivers only on the Leopard OSX DVD.
The download of the BC Update 2.1 will only install if you have installed the BC Drivers from the Leopard DVD (which are version 2.0).
Since the OSX DVD is also necessary for certain maintenance tasks in OSX, like repairing your OSX volume for example, you really should call Apple, provide them with the serial number of your Mac and ask them to send you a replacement disc.
Usually they do this but are charging something like 30 USD for it.

  • Booting MBP HDD as an External to a PC

So it finally happened... the magsafe power cord failed to do its job (really I just wasn't being careful enough) and got snagged. End rsult, my MBP is now rendered fairly useless. It will turn on, but stays on the boot screen and then flashes the folder w/ "?" icon. Anyways, I'm over it, just want to get my data off it.
I currently don't have another mac around me to test if booting in FW target mode will work. But I was wondering if I manually pull my HDD and plug it into a 2.5" SATA HDD case, and plug it into a PC, will it be able to read the data (assuming the drive is still intact)?
I'd appreciate any insight you guys have.
    Thanks

Well here is the biggest problem, the Mac that the drive came out of was damaged and we do not know the state of the drive. Especially since the drive was not being read by the Mac which was the reason for the ? at boot.
Now it could be assumed that the Mac was flashing the ? at boot because the logic board got hosed when the Magsafes' Cord safety featres failed you! But it could be that it actually damaged the drive and if the Mac was running during the time of the accident, then the drive could have damaged some sector information (data).
    So back to Macdrive...
Macdrive may not be able to read the drive because it is corrupt.
    Here is what I suggest:
    1. Make sure that you have the proper power to your external enclosure.
    2. Reboot the Windows machine and try again.
    3. Read this guide from Macdrives knowledge base and then attempt step-2, to repair the Mac drive.
    http://assist.mediafour.com/index.php?a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&i=34&nav2=MacDrive
I would use caution as this is a 3rd party application that you will be using in an attempt to read through your disk and repair corruption. There is always a possibility of data loss.
    4. Contact Macdrives' tech support.
One more thing! Can you boot the Mac into the OSX install DVD? If so then you can attempt a disk repair using OSX Disk Utilities form the install DVD.
To run DU from the OSX install DVD:
    1. Power-on Mac and insert the DVD into the drive, then power-off.
    2. Power-on the Mac and immediately press and hold the "C-key" until you get to the OSX Installation Language selection screen, select your language then continue.
    3. From the Welcome screen, select Utilities --> Disk Utilities from the tool bar.
    4. In DU select your drive (if it appears) from the left pane then select First Aid in the right pane.
    5. From First Aid press the "Repair Disk" button, if DU reports errors then run it again until it read no errors found.

  • IMac does not carry on the system.

    Hi All.
I am having a very strange situation with my iMac (IOS updated).
When I woke it from sleep, could not type the password on the box. I forced it to turn off (held the button in the back). Next time I turned the machie on, the opening sound was OK, the apple was there at the center of the white screen, and the spinning wheel was rolling.  Normally the spinning wheel rolls for some moments, the the box for the password appears and we go on.  This time, the spinning wheel keeps rolling for some 3-5 minutes, them the apple in the center of the screen is replaced by the symbol of a circle crossed by a straight line from right-botton up to left-up, somethig like a traffic sign for a forbidden way.  And the system does not carry on.
Does any one know a process to pss it and carry on the system?
    Best,
