Repair Packages

My computer has recently been running repair_packages by itself. Is this a problem, and if so, how would I fix it?

Apparently, you've tried to open a dmg file and the machine's caught in a loop. Open the Console app in /Applications/Utilities/, show all logs, click on All messages, do a string match for repair_packages, which is used by Disk Utility to verify or repair permissions on installed packages, and see what it's trying verify or repair.

  • IMac not booting from HD, cannot repair disc in Disk Utility

    First the problem:
I've had the imac G5 for nearly two years and its been running without a problem, now it suddenly wouldn't start up. Firstly I get two or three grey screens in succession looking as if being drawn from top to bottom very quickly, then the apple logo and timer, after a minute or so the fans start up to full power and it stays that way.
    What I've tried:
Reading around discussions I tried rebooting from DVD installer and using disk utility. Result: error message: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Because I want to sell the imac I had backed up all of my important data so I zero-wrote the hard drive in preferrence to buying a third party repair package. Reinstalled from DVD. Shut down and restarted. Everything worked except those banding grey screens appeared that were never there before. Something looks wrong. Then when i tried to reinstall microsoft office (as a test) the OS seemed to freeze and I had to shut it down again. Now it won't boot up as before. This looks like a very serious problem.
I hesitate to buy tech tool pro in case that doesn't solve it either.
Can't think if I did something to cause this. All I've been doing is transferring some data via ethernet to a newer mac. There was also a Lacie firewire drive linked to both computers as i was backing up stuff. One night I shut the iMac down and the next day it started with this problem.
Well... any educated suggestions would be most welcome,
    thanks.
By the way, the memory in the mac was purchsed from a third party and installed ages ago by myself. Never been a problem with it and have been running Final Cut Studio no trouble.
    iMac G5 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   RAM 2GB

Long story short, I had the same problem last week, just after installing the latest software updates. I went through all the resets and disk utility verification (multiple times with phone support -- Apple Care), then took it to the local Apple store b/c nothing worked. They couldn't figure it out either and recommended that I try to backup my data on my bootable external drive before they started messing with my hard drive, since Apple stopped providing this service. I brought it home, could not boot from my external drive, so booted from the disk again, just for kicks I ran the same verification process (this was the 3rd or 4th time). This time something happened but it still failed. So I ran it three more times (each time something new happened and then it failed, until the third time when everything worked. The only problem now is that I seem to have lost all sound???? I did immediately make a duplicate of the Imac hard drive. Any thoughts on how to get my sound back? hope this helps....

  • KB2919355 has crippled my machine- boot loop to repair mode

Running Server 2012R2, installed KB2919355 manually using DISM as part of a series of manual updates recommended by following a rabbit hole beginning
here to address a problem I was having with gdi32.dll.  Upon rebooting after installing this package (2919355), I entered a loop into Repair Mode.  Further research found
this hotfix, which seems to be exactly my problem (my system boots from a SAS RAID array using an LSI1068E controller).  I have tried diligently to follow the instructions, however I cannot get
far enough along in order to actually install the hotfix.  Here's the main problem:
Using repair mode, I attempt to modify the BCD to limit memory to 4GB, but the change does not seem to persist after rebooting.  I have tried the same procedure from the command line after booting from the installation DVD, but I seem to be restricted
to a greatly reduced set of executables (do I not have admin privileges when using the installation media?), so things like bcdedit just throw an "unrecognized command" error.  I'm tempted to just pull RAM sticks to get below 4GB, but that's
    a lot of tedious labor.
    Noteworthy (I hope) facts:
    1. chkdisk gives no errors.
    2. sfc /scannow yields "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot...", so it aborts without giving me any info.
    3. Bitlocker was not being used.
    4. Attempting the "last known state" restore simply returns to repair mode after reboot.
I am really in trouble, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have explored this already.  Unfortunately, I require a disk large enough to hold the image file (.wim) from my system drive before I can inject the repair package.  I tried creating an image the other night, and it ran for several hours
before telling me my target drive was full.  I am constrained by the following problems:
    1. The only drives I have available that are large enough are externally connected to an HBA requiring special drivers to be loaded, which I can't do in WinRE/WinPE, which are the only modes I can use at this point.
    2. The aforementioned drives are 4k native drives formatted in ReFS, which I understand is not supported by WinRE & WinPE (correct me if I'm wrong).
I am on the verge of performing a clean install at this point.  If I were billing for my hours spent on this crap, I'd be in a new tax bracket this year.
The real question is: why is KB2919355 still available for install even with the issues that have been known for over a year?  I only installed it because it was pointed to as a fix for a different problem.  The cross-linking and updating of hotfixes
and patches is a minefield that reflects a very poor culture of quality.  It's a good thing MS doesn't make pharmaceuticals or medical devices.

I'm sorry to hear about the problem. In your case, you might want to call customer support. However, I don't believe your AT10LE-A is from Toshiba USA, and this is the forum for Toshiba USA. You should contact Toshiba in your region.

  • Can't install a version of Safari compatible with OS 10.7.4

Both my MacBook Pro and MacPro are running )S 10.7.4. The version of Safari on my Mac Pro is more recent (6.0) than the one that was on my MacBook Pro. So I thought to update Safari on the MacBook Pro and I downloaded and installed Safari 6.0.3 It turns out, of course, that I can't use this version of Safari with OS 10.7.4 but there was no warning to this effect when I started the installation. I had a retained a downloaded version of Safari 5.1`.7 for Lion and tried to install it, but when I did an error message appeared stating that I could not install it since I had a newer version of Safari already installed. So this appears to be a Catch 22 sityuation in which I have installed an unusable version of Safari installed on my computer and it won't let me install a usable version. The fact is that I'm not going to install OS 10.8.x anytime soon, because some software that I use in my work is currently incompatible with the newer OS. What I have done for the moment is make Chrome my default browser. But I would be most appreciative if someone could tell me how to uninstall Safari 6.0.3 and renistal Safari 5.1.7 for Lion on my MacBook Pro. Thanks!

You ought to have 10.7.5 and the latest security update on both Lion macs, in which case 6.0.3 should work, or at least allow installing it again, assuming it was the Safari6.0.3Lion.pkg you used.
Failing that, (and it worked very well when I briefly tested rolling back from 6.0.2 to 5.1.7)... there is a 'repair' package that is intended to remove a broken 6.0.3 & revert to the previous version

use at your own risk, and back-up first.

Ok, so I use this laptop for a variety of things, including watching television, work, and playing video games. Occasionally (read: consistently but still seemingly random) when under moderate-heavy stress, the computer will "shut down". What I mean by this is the screen will instantly turn black, and there will be an audio stutter remaining with the only option being to do a hard restart. This happens on a variety of games and videos, including League of Legends and Counter Strike, mostly everything I play consistently. I will post the crash report below as well.

Anyway, I really appreciate the help in advance. Since I just had this computer repaired, I find it highly unlikely this is due to my own error, and is more than likely hardware based. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

This is telling you the issue: the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
As this is hardware issue, the only thing you can do is to make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the logic board replaced again. Your Mac is still under the 90-day warranty of the last repair, so it will be free

  • Accidentally updated to Safari 6

    Help,
I accidentally updated my wife's MacBook Air to Safari 6.0.2 - which she hates with a passion. I need to get back to the previous version. Running Lion.
    John

There are various instructions around which rely on the Safari update making a copy of the old application & files at Library/Application Support/Apple/.SafariArchive.tar.gz and a note of their locations at .SafariPath in the same folder (both invisible, due the . at the start of the filename. It's possible to expand the archive & replace relevant files.
others claim to have downloaded Safari 5.1.7 for Lion & used Pacifist, a shareware app to 'force' the install, I haven't tried that specific Lion/Safari combo.
Apple make, but don't document much beyond listing it as available, a 'repair' package for Lion/Safari which looking inside, does what was mentioned above, using the hidden archive. I used it on a 10.7.5 install which had safari 6.0.2 & it did restore 5.1.7 which then worked as expected in limited testing following the required restart. IF you now have a reliable backup, you might consider trying it, since even if there are problems, you can restore everything from backup

  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 shutter button

The shutter button was broken and fell out. How can I replace it? Thanks.

The DSC-H2 and H5 have a serious design flaw, the shutter button posts are about 1/32 of an inch thick and break ALL THE TIME. Don't waste your money buying another one from Sony for $25+ because it will just break again.
You want an aluminum post so that it will NEVER break again!! Sony doesn't sell them and won't admit there's a problem with the camera design. They will charge you $171 to fix the camera if you want to send it in to them though! Not a very good deal if you ask me.
The only place to get a solid aluminum shutter release button post is from Darntoothysam.com and the complete repair package is only $70 if you want to send it in for repair.
$25 for the same plastic post that already broke, or $25 for a solid aluminum one with a lifetime guarantee it will never break again?

  • App-V 5 Error 0x4C401F0C-0x8007012F

    Hi,
I am receiving the above error a lot on on our office 2010 package, once its received that package is broken until the RDS server is restarted. Microsoft suggest this is by design...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2780304
Having dug through the files it seems that the package encounters errors with the file MSOXEV.DLL, specifically it seems to lock it with windows explorer.exe. A quick search on the web indicates that this file is used by infopath for shell extension
    integration.
My question is how do I disable the shell extension functionality either for a specific package or against specific applications?
I've had a trawl through the deployment configuration but cant see an entry reference that relates to this, i may have missed it however as its a fairly large config file. I hope to disable this function and see if the file locking issues goes away.
    Thanks
    Keith

Hi, Bit of a delay on replying due to other project commitments.
This is still ongoing. However I have now found additional error messages. This issue occurs once a day in the morning following a scheduled task for something completely unrelated (A task that sends a reporting email for a natively installed app).
When the task runs the following event's are reported in the app-v debug logs. All App-V apps then fail on the machine, a reboot followed by a package removal and resync is the only way to get it going. Repair doesn't help.
The particular package referenced below is Acrobat reader. However no apps will launch any more.

  • Delta load correction w/o reinitialisation

    Hi BW Gurus,
I have a situation here where the Delta has been intialised for 2LIS_13_Vditm (Billing Document Data) The selection criteria is as follows.
    20010314 -20020630; 20020701 -20021231; 20030101-99991231
Sales figures do not tally with R/3. User has advised that BW informtion on returns and sales there is some missed information between the two for the month of November 2005.
The system has been quite stable so far and and the delta has never broken. Now a re-init would take a long time with alomost 5 years of historical data. Anyone can suggest a smarter way to correct the issue as it only appears that a particular months data is affected.
I deeply appreciate if you could please suggest a way to correct it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Peter

    This procedure should work:
(I propose that you exercise this procedure in development before you do it in production.)
0 - Stop the collection run in R/3 for this extractor
1 - Via LBWE/structure maintenance check which basis
tables are used in the extractor.
2 - Check the basis tables for records <b>created</b>
in november and records <b>changed</b> in november.
3 - Mark all document numbers from step 2.
4 - With the appropriate OLI* transaction fill the
setup-table with the document ranges from step 2.
Note that the delta can continue without
        interruption during this setup.
Now load all pending delta's (check in RSA7 in R/3 if it goes to '0'. Note that collection run is still disabled.
Remove the init selection from your extractor. The DELTA is now broken! Don't worry, we'll repair it in the next section.
5 - Load the contents of the setup table as a FULL
        REPAIR package.
5a - In an ODS with all update rules on overwrite you
         are ready.
5b - If the update rules are on addition then you are
in trouble. You'll have to prevent that the FULL
REPAIR and the normal delta will lead to double
values. This may be possible via
    5ba - a selective deletion
5bb - using a new temporary ODS where you load the
FULL REPAIR and then load the data from the
temporary ODS via temporary updaterules to your
existing ODS. The temporary updaterules are set
          to overwrite.
6 - Do an INIT without data transfer.
7 - restart the collective run in R/3 and make sure it
runs once immediately. Check this in RSA7.
8 - Execute the delta infopackage to make sure it works
        again.
Due to the long procedure I may have been to brief or unclear for certain steps. Don't hesitate to ask for further information.

  • Repairing permissions - ERROR: NO VALID PACKAGES

I think I may have deleted something important!
I had a bit of a tidy up the other day, mainly deleting printers & fonts that I don't use. But it looks like I may have removed a few important things.
    In disk utility, I can no longer repair disk permissions. When I try, I get a box saying;
    FIRST AID FAILED
DISK UTILITY STOPPED REPAIRING PERMISSIONS ON "MACINTOSH HD" BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING ERROR WAS ENCOUNTERED:
    NO VALID PACKAGES
Is there an easy way of fixing this? Or am I looking at a reinstall of Tiger?

Glad that sorted your immediate problem.
On the face of it I would have thought that none were necessary, as the name of the folder and the fact that they're installer packages for things that have already been installed would seem to indicate that they are not needed. BUT the fact that the loss of one of those files caused a problem with something that can be as important as the ability to repair permissions is pretty clear evidence that the files in there are used for something!
So, I would recommend leaving alone the packages for apps/etc. that are still on your machine, or files that you do not recognize. On the other hand, there are some items (very few, actually) in my receipts folder that I would feel comfortable deleting, e.g. a virus defs package for Norton, which I installed right when I got my MBP, but it utterly failed for reasons I won't go into here, and I actually ran the uninstaller to get rid of it, but clearly it left this little gift for me. And poof, it's gone.
But the majority I would recommend leaving alone. On my HDD the Receipts folder is ~170 MB, so it's not a huge chunk, but of course every little bit adds up!
    Hope this helps...

  • Repairing permissions - Error: No valid packages(?!) Wha?

Computer's been doing strange things lately. Not recognizing my airport signal (none of my neighbor's wireless signals either); not recognizing any printers when time to print; no quicktime playback; some sent and received emails lost in space, etc. So I'm getting ready for an archive and install when I think I'll try repairing permissions first. Verifying disk says volume is fine. But i get an immediate error of no valid packages for repairing permissions. Anyone know what this means and how to rectify it?

    First "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Verify & Repair if needed, then use Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature...
