Repair Permission Warnings with 10.5.1

I am getting Repair Permissions warnings in Disk Utilities. Such as:
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/ Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/
Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I am getting a total of 9 of these "Warnings." Anyone know what these mean and whether these can be fixed? I am on a Mac Pro Dual Core 2.66 Intel Xeon with 4 gig RAM running 10.5.1.
Thanks,
Gabe

  • Repair Permission Warnings after 10.5.5 update

I just did an update from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5. Everything seems to be fine from a functional standpoint, except warnings I am getting from repair disk permissions. Before the update, I ran verify disk (ok), repaired permissions (there were a couple of issues that were repaired successfully). I then ran the update which included OSX, java, and 3 other updates. Everything seemed to go fine.
I then ran repair disk permissions again and got the following:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswdl" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are drwxrwxr-x.
I have called apple support. They ran me through another round of repair disk permissions from the install disk. Same warnings, nothing changed. They indicated that the warnings are probably "no big deal."
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

I searched the forum and found a solved thread that discussed using a terminal command as follows from V.K.:
    "ls -aldeO /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool /usr/bin/lppasswd
if the result it returns is
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 38432 22 Aug 00:12 /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 47472 3 Sep 21:24 /usr/bin/lppasswd
then you are fine and there is nothing wrong with your permissions."
I ran it and mine are the same except for the date. Mine came back as follows:
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 38432 Sep 6 04:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 47472 Sep 6 04:20 /usr/bin/lppasswd
Is this OK? Or, do I have a problem?
    You're cool.
The Time and Date are when you created the file or permissions. Nothing more.
As long as everything else is OK, it's really just a minor Apple bug. There is a permissions database from which the DU takes orders, so to speak. If a file's permissions differ from what the database says they should be, you get a warning. AFAIK, the problem is with the database, not with anything else.
Also, if you download and reapply the 10.5.5 update the first two SUID warnings may disappear. In fact, they all may disappear, but as I noted, those last two keep coming back, like that proverbial bad penny
You can check other posts of mine and others for the link to the Apple download page.
Again, no problem - you are in good shape.

  • Repair Permission with Disk Utility in Snow Leopard?

After upgrading to SL, tried to do a repair permission with disk utility (a few times) & i got this "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired." ....is this normal????
    http://img25.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20090830atam0.jpg/

A quick question about Disk Utility with Snow Leopard .. I can't make the Password dialog come up when I open a .sparseimage that is Password protected. I tried to make a new one from scratch and the same result.
    Any suggestions?

  • Repair Permission still problematic

I still get the following when trying as Disk Repair Permission:
    Repairing permission for "Macintosh HD"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    Permission repair complete.
    Anyone else experience same?
Otherwise upgrade to Leopard on this machine seems to be working ... weird.

Yes, I have this same problem with repair permissions on one of my external drives. Another drive (a brand new one I got for Time Machine) gave a similar error message when TM tried to format it; I was only able to format it by rebooting in Tiger, after which the drive appears to be fine. So, there are problems with Disk Utility, but I don't have a solution.

I even fresh install the system and every time I do repair the permission I always end up with this even though it said repaired.
I figure this is the problem my laptop, sometime it wont save files or documents and it goes in limbo and had to force shutdown and have to restart on the
booth drive to have it permission repair. I just updated to 10.9.3 and will see if this stop the crashing but repair permission notice is still the same.
    Any feedback please....Thanks

However, at the end, it said "permissions repair complete"
    What does this mean?
Should I be concerned that certain permissions could not be repaired?
I am concerned since the computer seems to be running a bit sluggish. I am especially having problems with iPhoto in Editing mode where it is locking up on me.
Not sure if this is a sign of a bad hard drive since I have the alleged bad hard drive (Model: ST9100824AS Revision: 7.01)
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

First order of buiness when visiting these forums is to use the search feature. A search for SUID would have given you many answers. For example, Apple posted this a month ago: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
As a final note, manually download and reinstall the 10.5.1 update. Then, repair permissions again. That's fixed the problem for me and a lot of others.

  • Leopard trash hangs; repair permission slow, time capsule erased

since i have installed my leopard upgrade in order to install my time capsule, trash hard to empty and repairing permissions deletes my time capsule backup and capsule says i have no backup (which, when you do your first, it takes 24 hours, so it is not something i want to repeat!). anyone else having these problems? right now, i don't empty trash and don't repair permissions if i want to keep working.

Clearly something is radically wrong with your system. Repairing permission should not result in a backup being deleted. I suggest that you disconnect your TimeCapsule and repair permissions and also check your HD for errors and repair if necessary.
Permission repair takes up to 20 minutes with Leopard because of more extensive checking, but it should be done before starting a backup. You do not want to backup an HD with bad permissions, which is what you seem to be doing.
Your trash being hard to empty may also be tied to your permission errors, but it could be something else.
You need to be more specific in spelling out the problems you are having.

every time I repair my iPod with iTunes, it hangs at the end of the process (while checkin the recovery of iPod). What can I do?

I chose to restore it to factory defaults, but that never succeeded.
It hangs at the end of the process.
    printscreen:

    Language is Dutch :-)
    Littery it says:
    Check of Recovery of iPod.
    Already for 40 minutes.
    I closed down iTunes.
Now, when I turn on my iPod, there is the icon of iTunes with an usb cable towards it.
When I attach it to my computer and turn on iTunes, the message is there that a iPod was stuck in recovery mode and I should retry it.
And then I get the same story. Unpacking, installing, checking... blocked!

What happens when you try? I had to hold there photo there for a short period before it would load.

Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a startup failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

Boot into Safe Mode and try repairing permissions. Does it still panic? Also, disconnect all external peripherals and see if that makes any difference. Have you repaired the hard drive?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and "R" keys until the computer starts from the Recovery HD.

  • [svn] 4880: * Fixed deprecation warnings with AST generation and a Repeater RTE

    Revision: 4880
    Author: [email protected]
    Date: 2009-02-06 13:30:19 -0800 (Fri, 06 Feb 2009)
    Log Message:
    * Fixed deprecation warnings with AST generation and a Repeater RTE
    caused by revision 4709.
tests Passed: checkintests, mxunit repeater, asc-tests
    Needs QA: YES
    Needs DOC: NO
    Bug fixes: SDK-16288, SDK-18986
    API Change: NO
    Reviewer: Corey, Pete F.
    Code-level description of changes:
    asc/src/java/macromedia/asc/embedding/LintEvaluator.java
    Added ignoreSynthesizedCode variable and setter.
Modified warning() to only skip synthetic code when
ignoreSynthesizedCode is false. This allows us to report
deprecation warnings when using AST generation with Mxml
    documents.
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/as3/As3Compiler.java
Modified analyze4() to set the LintEvaluator's
    ignoreSynthesizedCode flag to false.
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/lang/StandardDefs.java
    Added CLASS_REPEATER_DOT.
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/VisualChildInitializer.java
Modified getAssignExpr() and generateAssignExpr() to code gen the
initializeRepeater() call. This required changing the return type
    of generateAssignExpr() from ExpressionStatementNode to
    StatementListNode.
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/ValueInitializer.java
Removed initializeRepeater() related code gen from
    getDefinitionBody() and generatedDefinitionBody().
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/EffectInitializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/Initializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/StyleInitializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/EventInitializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/NamedInitializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/init/ArrayElementInitializer.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/rep/decl/InitializedPropertyDeclaration.java
    compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/mxml/ImplementationGenerator.java
Updated to reflect change to generateAssignExpr() signature
    required by VisualChildInitializer.

  • Can I use my original Install disc (PPC with OS 10.4)to repair my harddisc with OS 10.5.8

can I use my original Install disc (PPC with OS 10.4)to repair my harddisc with OS 10.5.8?

Is the 10.5.8 Drive also PPC?
Try Verify Disk first if so.
You might be better of trying this...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

I never have permission to repair befoure, what's happens? Why Disk utility after i choose "Repair Disk" tell me "The permission is repaired" and when i verify again i have the same file Not repaired? What i must do?
    Thanks on advice
    Regard
(sorry for my english, i hope i'm explaining well my problem)

There is nothing to repair; there are no errors. These "errors" will keep returning no matter how many times you run Repair. This is normal.
The Permissions database has simply not been updated by Apple to reflect the new location of these files. The l before the Permissions is a Symlink which is kind of like an alias linking the files. When you see Permissions like that, you can ignore them. The important thing is that after Repairing you get the report "Permissions have been repaired."

  • Trying to repair files recovered with Photorec

Does anyone know how to repair files recovered with photorec. I was able to recover the files after deleting them but now I have an issue of having to link the audio back with the video. Any suggestions
    Thanks
    j.

Media is very finicky, and if it has been deleted and recovered, you'd be hard pressed to get it to work properly again.
My suggestion is to recapture from the master tapes, or reimport from the card backups if tapeless.
Please tell me you have the masters...because if you are trying Herculean efforts to recover data, I have the sneaking suspicion that you don't have them.
