Repair permissions broken

This has been reported on OS X (not sever) after installing the 10.5.8, but the same is true for OS X Server 10.5.8
After installing the combo updater, running verify permissions in Disk utility gives

Running that as repair permissions will probably hurt my setup? All sorts of files with 000 permissions will result. Seems bad.

PS. Funny thing. When I run pkgutil --verify com.apple.pkg.update.osserver.10.5.8, I do not see the 000-permission repairs. mentioned, but in DIsk Utility I do. What gives?

Solution is here:

Note, current MacFixit's default recipe (repair, update, repair) triggers the bug in this update.
The recipe for this update is repair, update, update (apply second time), repair

    HI Griff,
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions Feature
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
From the last link: "Repair Disk Permissions often produces messages while it is running. These messages are generally of an informational nature and can usually be ignored. Some of these messages may be repeated every time Repair Disk Permissions is run as the receipt for the object in question is forcing the setting of specific permissions, even if no correction is required. Again, these can also be ignored. *Only messages indicating the failure of the Repair Disk Permissions process, or the inability to correct permissions on a specific file or folder, should be of concern."*
The more you educate yourself on the Mac OS X, the more confidence you will have in the system.
I just ran Disk Utility and have the same permissions as you. As long as you see this at the end...
    Permissions Repair complete. You're fine.

  • Help With Repair Permissions!

    Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

    Thank You,
    Suave!

    Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.

  • HD Not Accessible to Repair Permissions

Hello. I hope you can help me isolate the error that is keeping my Intel iMac G5 from booting properly. I’m running 10.4.
It froze after I’d been backing up onto DVD/dumping old data (about 20GB worth). Whenever I tried restarting the screen would freeze on the grey apple logo, sometimes with the swirly icon.
When I ran Disk Utility off the install disk at first it indicated “error detected” on mass storage, but later said it was fine. But I could not run Repair successfully (I kept getting "repair failed" messages), and the Repair Disk Permissions button was not accessible (greyed out).
I could not startup in safe mode. And if I tried to restart in DU the only option was a Network (which I'm not hooked up to).
Once I got a Kernal panic screen but most of the time it was just a grey apple with the fan hitting 900 rpm.
Finally I ran DiskWarrior and in 15 minutes it had cleaned out and rebuilt my HD. I thought I was home clear.
However, even though Disk Utility now says my HD is fine, it still does not allow me to Repair Disk Permissions - the option is greyed out. And if I boot up pressing Option to select a Startup Disk, the rebuilt drive is not one of them.
It appears my /Library/Receipts folder is empty.
What’s more, if I try to run an admin command in Terminal, like
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    I get the message:
    -bash: sudo: command not found
In fact, any way I try typing sudo I get a “command not found” message, even if I try to run other command like chmod.
    When I type:
    Users
    I get
    Users: command not found.
    So I typed:
    Echo $PATH
    And get
    /bin:/sbin:/usr/bn:/usr/sbin:/usr/libexec:/System/Library/CoreServices
I’m not sure at this point whether the fact that the DiskWarrior-rebuilt drive doesn’t show up among Startup options (when I boot with option key) is because of missing/broken permissions; an empty /Library/Receipts folder; missing users; or a missing path.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oy. I purchased an external drive and began installing Mac OSX onto it, so that I could then migrate all files from the unbootable hard drive before running an Archive & Install. That part seemed to go smoothly. But a few problems have emerged:
    1. Though I was prompted to keep Disk 2 of the install ready, it never asked me for it, even though I ran the installation 2 or 3 times. Consequently while I can select the external drive when booting up command-S, I can only see Install window, Disk Utility or Terminal windows - never a desktop, preferences drop down, help menu, finder, all the things I'd typically see when launching my machine. Is this normal? Is there a way to force it to install only disk 2 if it has things it needs for full bootable GUI / access?
    2. Booting up with the install disk, in disk utility I can see both drives but still cannot repair permissions on my affected HD. I tried via Terminal (repairPermissions, chmod or chown) commands; I keep getting error messages (command not found).
    3. Switching cd / to my new drive in Terminal, I was able, I think, to change permissions (755) but when I open Disk Utility the drive is still not writable and "Repair Disk Permissions" is still grayed out.
    4. I could not open Migration Assistant on the new drive via Disk Utility, so I copied it from the HD into its own folder on the new one, but am really confused about the whole Disk Image thing. If I create a new disk image and try to open it, convert or checksum it, it still is grayed out, I can never just open it. I tried running commands in Terminal to run that application on the external drive, pointing to the new folder, to the .app, to the contents, .dmg, and no commands seem to work, I keep getting the command not found message.
If I just run the A&I, I fear I'll lose my data which is why I wanted to migrate everything over before I did so. But if the user / owner permissions are screwed up and the only way to fix them is A&I, I don't know what else to do.
Is there ANY way to boot from the install, run Migration Assistant from the external drive (either through Disk Utility or Terminal) and copy all files from HD? If not, I guess I'll have to cross fingers and A&I.
Gee, I used to love my Mac ...

  • Repair Permissions and they don't repair

Everytime I repair permissions using the disk utility it says that the permissions are repaired, but then I click to verify permissions and it is all as it was before... What can I do?

yes, the problem is that the file permissions are very odd. It all started when I migrated the files from one mac to another, the permissions shown are like this:
That first everyone is a broken permissions and the disk utility never fix it. I have to authenticate to delete this files and it is boring me a lot.
If i change that first everyone to whatever privilege it is, the file is "fixed" but it would involve changing like five thousand times, and it will not be pleasant.
I read this article: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16721607#16721607 but i havent understood much.
    can somebody help me?

  • Repair Permissions Report

I generally run Repair Permissions and MacJanitor every 7-10 days, especially after installations. For some time I've been getting 2 lines: "./Library/Color/Sync/Profiles/Displays" on the Repair Permissions readout. It's not all that concerning, just annoying, but is there a fix for this? Is it CS2 Photoshop related?
I've run Profile First Aid and got this read out:
    "Searching for profiles...
    Checking 102 profiles...
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/ProPhoto.icm
Header white point is not D50.
The file is locked. Could not be fixed.
Repair done - 0 out of 1 profiles fixed."
I also re-calibrated the LCD Display. Still I get the above readout. Anyone have a suggestion or comment?
    Thanks.
    X

    Hi xsedrinam,
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays. New permissions are 16893
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/ColorSync/Profiles. New permissions are 16893
These messages are coded in the HintList.plist. They change the permissions from those recorded in the package receipt to new permissions. They are not CS2 related.
The Adobe .icm files seem to be pure Carbon binary files that aren't respecting the BSD permission model. The group listing are reported differently between the Finder Get Info Window and the shell. I can't get the shell to list whether these files are locked or not. The only suggestion I have is "if it ain't broken, then don't fix it".

  • When Should I Repair Permissions?

I've been back-reading the posts on repairing permissions after installing software. I'm still not clear on when it needs to be done. If I am installing more than one application, do I repair permissions after each install or only after all installs are completed?
Also, do I need to repair permissions after each Software Update?
    MultiMacs

Repair permissions when they're broken. There's a lot of voodoo about this. 99% of the time it means absolutely nothing. Doing it routinely once a month is like locking your car and unlocking it again in the belief that it will run better.

  • Updates and repairing permissions

This evening I finally bit the bullet and used the "update software" feature to bring my eMac up to 10.3.9. I was hesitant, because up till then my eMac had been running flawlessly.
After all the updates were installed, I ran a Repair Permissions on the drive, and got an error I'd never seen before. The process halted about 1/4 of the way through and a message read, "Disk Utility has lost connection with the Disk Management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." But when I click "Quit" I get the warning, "Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational." But I don't really have a choice, so I quit. I'm still functioning, but it's worrisome.
Does anyone know what might be going on? I repaired permissions using OnyX (as I've done ever since I've had the computer) just a few days ago and everything was fine then. I tried OnyX tonight, but it froze up.

Here is a post I saved from one of the Yahoo Mac groups I subscribe. This is probably your issue... Patrick
This appears to be a recent issue, affecting only OS 10.3.9. It affected me so I thought I'd share it.
Today, after performing a software update (bypassing QT 7.0.4 which has known issues of its own wherby it breaks Java apps), I ran Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and I got the following error:
    Disk Utility internal error
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
Quit & Relaunch doesn't help, nor does restarting. Following an Internet search it seems the problem centres around ITunes 6.0.2. Moving the iTunes 6.0.2.app from the Applications folder to the desktop allows Disk Utility to run. Incidentally it's not just the Disk Utility app that's affected, using Terminal is broken too.
Here's the deal - moving the iTunes.app from the applications folder to the desktop allows Disk Utility to run perfectly. If you want to run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions AND, keep iTunes 6.02 in your Applications Folder (as opposed to on your desktop), then the following
step will make it happen (found on the Apple Support Forum heaving with people trying to fix this problem):
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
Both these worked for me. I can't take the credit for it, it was lifted from the following forum thread: http://tinyurl.com/98w5t

Would you care to tell us which version of Mac Pro, and which version of OS X, you are running?  (It's not always safe to assume that a User is running Lion just because he posted in the Lion Forum.)

  • New Mac Mini and Repairing Permissions

I've been having trouble with my Mail program and thought I would repair permissions to see if that would help. I ran disk utility from my internal hard drive and ran repair permissions. Apparently it found several permissions to repair, so I thought I would run repair permissions again and the same list appeared. Running a third time and the same list appeared again.Do these permissions ever get repaired? What do I do from here? Should I repair permissions after booting up off of my original system disk? This Mini is only a couple of weeks old and I'm already having problems with Mail and repairing permissions.

Thank you Tim but the computer is packed back waiting for TNT to take it back to Apple. I don't have time to play with permissions, the permissions are OK in the old computer.
This is what may have been your problem. The permissions on your old computer may not have matched the new computer. I think you gave up before the penny dropped.
They sell the computers very expensive and I think they would have to improve quality.
I am unsure how that can be one of your gripes as when the cube came out it was way overpriced in comparison to their other desktops. That did not stop your or I getting one then.
Your issue was a software problem not a hardware problem so no matter what kind of mac you had it would have needed troubleshooting.
The quality of the new mac mini far exceeds that of the cube. Try playing 1080P high definition media on your cube, or even 480P for that matter. Try outputting 5.1 surround sound from your cube without the addition of a firewire audio interface.
I know how frustrating it can be when something just does not seem to work. I have encountered this a few times in my work. However sometimes I just have leave it come back with fresh eyes and try other approaches and I succeed.
What you need to appreciate installing an upgrade should be planned for any eventuality. In business upgrades are scheduled to have the minimum impact on the workplace. That being said I have worked 48 hrs solid over a weekend getting systems up for a monday morning. They are not always straightforward.

  • Repairing permissions - ERROR: NO VALID PACKAGES

I think I may have deleted something important!
I had a bit of a tidy up the other day, mainly deleting printers & fonts that I don't use. But it looks like I may have removed a few important things.
    In disk utility, I can no longer repair disk permissions. When I try, I get a box saying;
    FIRST AID FAILED
DISK UTILITY STOPPED REPAIRING PERMISSIONS ON "MACINTOSH HD" BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING ERROR WAS ENCOUNTERED:
    NO VALID PACKAGES
Is there an easy way of fixing this? Or am I looking at a reinstall of Tiger?

Glad that sorted your immediate problem.
On the face of it I would have thought that none were necessary, as the name of the folder and the fact that they're installer packages for things that have already been installed would seem to indicate that they are not needed. BUT the fact that the loss of one of those files caused a problem with something that can be as important as the ability to repair permissions is pretty clear evidence that the files in there are used for something!
So, I would recommend leaving alone the packages for apps/etc. that are still on your machine, or files that you do not recognize. On the other hand, there are some items (very few, actually) in my receipts folder that I would feel comfortable deleting, e.g. a virus defs package for Norton, which I installed right when I got my MBP, but it utterly failed for reasons I won't go into here, and I actually ran the uninstaller to get rid of it, but clearly it left this little gift for me. And poof, it's gone.
But the majority I would recommend leaving alone. On my HDD the Receipts folder is ~170 MB, so it's not a huge chunk, but of course every little bit adds up!
    Hope this helps...

  • Repairing permissions - Error: No valid packages(?!) Wha?

Computer's been doing strange things lately. Not recognizing my airport signal (none of my neighbor's wireless signals either); not recognizing any printers when time to print; no quicktime playback; some sent and received emails lost in space, etc. So I'm getting ready for an archive and install when I think I'll try repairing permissions first. Verifying disk says volume is fine. But i get an immediate error of no valid packages for repairing permissions. Anyone know what this means and how to rectify it?

    First "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Verify & Repair if needed, then use Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature...

Where are we now after a reboot?

  • I am unable to print anything since installing the latest driver for my epson stylus rx640. I have followed epson's advice by doing repair permissions, but I still can't print anything. Can anybody suggest anything?

Can't print with my Epson stylus RX 640 since the latest apple software update for epson. Since then I completely reinstalled the printer following epson's advice. It worked. But today, I am trying to print some photos and nothing happens. Epson suggest resetting and then doing some repair permissions. Done that and still no joy. Can anyone help please.

contact Epson again and ask them about using a generic Gutenprint driver; I read in one of the threads here - but can't find it right now - about a problem with your model printer. Since Epson has not updated its driver to work with SL on this older model, it appears using a generic driver does work. You might also try searching for those threads by typing your model number into the search box.

  • Error message: There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?

I have been using iPhoto for years.  Today when I tried to upload pictures from camera, I received the above error message.  I select "Repair", enter my password, and then a message "iPhoto was unable to repair permissions for the library" appears. I select "Quit" and it closes iPhoto.  Quit is the only option.  What has happened?  I have tried to access the photos via other avenues such as uploading to gmail, and the photos load fine.  I have about 28,000 photos.
I do not know what version of iPhoto I am using as I am unable to access the software.  I have a iMac OS X (10.7.5).  What should I do?

Select the iPhoto application in the Applications folder and type Command+i to bring up its Info Window. There will tell the version number. If it's iPhoto 9 or later apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?
