Repair permissions found often the following.

The group on my "/etc/cups" directory is also 26 as is the group on many (but not all) of the files within. Group 26 is "_lp", which would seem to make sense, so, no, I wouldn't worry about it.

Then I sometimes get the brown screen that states,You must re-start your computer.
I have already zeroed out the hard drive and re-installed Panther and the upgrade Tiger disc.
I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

  • I ran a repair disk permissions and got the following:

I ran a repair disk permissions on my mack book and i got the following message: Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired. What are the implications?

These are innocuous messages, not errors. The will be recurring but are harmless and will not affect your computer. They can be ignored.

  • Problem:  I have to run repair permissions to access the internet using safari, firefox or chrome on my mac pro.  What can I do to fix the problem once and for all?

This is what I get when I run repair permissions in disk utility. Thanks for any assistance you can give.

  • "App store quit unexpectedly" - Neither "update combo" nor "repair permissions" has corrected the issue

I have already followed the instructions to delete the app and run the Update Combo, in fact I have done this twice. I have also repaired the permissions more than once.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the App Store to work again?

Check the startup disk ...  (not the same as repairing permissions)
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

  • Repair permissions found problem?

I routinely repaired permissions before using SWupdate to update my newly installed Panther on the MBP and got messages that certain SUID files had been modified and would not be repaired. They included "usr/libexec/load_hdi" and "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" among others. Do I have a problem? Disk verify showed no problems.
    Don

I hope you meant Leopard, not Panther because Panther does not run on Intel Macs! As for your question, it's answered here.

  • Repair Permissions keeps correcting the same permission.

Tiger–Repair Permissions corrects the owner group of ./private/Var/log/secure.log to -rw------ from -rw-r-------. It is my father's iMac and he firmly believes that this incorrect permission slows the computer. Once the permissions are changed, they soon return to the same setting and are trapped again by Repair Permissions. Question...is this an invisible file that could slow the computer? Is it only a log? Should this quirk just be ignored?
    blue skies, Phillip
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

AFAIK, that's a cosmetic bug that occurs when the daily maintenance task rotates the various logs. It won't affect system performance. Unless there's some underlying problem he's trying to fix, tell him to ignore it and advise him to only repair permissions after he updates Apple software.

  • Repair permissions always finds the same

Using an iMac, Snow Leopard with the latest updates.  Every time I run repair permissions I get a 18-20 listing of items, usually Java related with an occasional 'system framework' notation.   Is there an update or is this typical??
    Thank,
    GH

The basic answer is that some files have been re-located in some of the recent releases (Java for one) and the permissions repair application isn't looking for them in the new location.
Some will no doubt be corrected with the next increment or OS release, but expect different ones to turn up then

  • Disk repair permissions, what's the point??

In the quest to try to do something about the noisy hard disk activity on a new 17-inch macbook pro, i had a go at repairing disk permissions in the hope that this might quieten things some. Well, the machine found gazillions of permissions to repair and did so. Well then I ran it again. Wouldn't you think all the repairs had been done already? But no, gazillions more repairs were made. Can anyone tell me if any of this matters??

It may matter. Here is a list of the errors that you can safely ignore:

  • How come I always get the same results when I repair permissions?

When I repair permissions I get the following messages, even if I do it again immediately afterwards:
    +Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .+
    +Repaired "usr/share/derby".+
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.+

The message about the ARDAgent is the result of an Apple update to Apple Remote Desktop from awhile ago. If you ran the update, you will get the notice. The "derby" message says that instead of a folder in the /usr/share directory there is now a symbolic link. Since derby is a java gizmo for the Apache web server, and there is a new Java update from Apple (which I haven't run yet, as it requires a restart), it is quite possible that the update makes that change. As Barney noted, Apple has not been good at making changes in the permissions database when they send out updates. The result is that we begin to see these little notes. Initially the database was in complete accord with what the installation had, and there were no warnings at all in Snow Leopard. After the ARD update the SUID warning began, and it is likely the Java update just added another one.
However, the tendency of people to just automatically ignore all warnings all the time, a legacy of the horrible performance of Apple in updating the database in Leopard (where one would get dozens of these things), is I think unfortunate. There can be real errors, some of which could indicate something bad, such as a compromised computer. One really needs to stop and think about which files are showing a warning, and what the warning means, and whether it is the case that all Snow Leopard installations that are fully updated are showing the particular warnings in question.

    Thanks for responding V.K.,
I am not familiar with running terminal commands but am anxious to do so.
Let me add a little info that may help decipher my problem.
I had a problem prior to repairing permissions as follows.
Startup was taking about 7 minutes.
When starting it would give Apple logo with spinning bars longer than usual. Then it would delay as if locked up on the blank white screen. Then open normally. However it locked up on variety of apps and at times the curser would not function from either the mouse or the touchpad. I also noticed that some keys would not function either from the computer keyboard or the Apple wireless keyboard. The space bar was one inoperable key and the ‘e’ & ‘n’ keys.
I ran DiskWarrier and it showed 20% fragmentation. I have never seen more than 4% in many years with Macs. After clearing the fragmenting back to '0' I checked all files, etc.
I then ran repair permissions which showed many in need of repair but no help on startup. I then reset PRAM. After resetting it cleared up the slow startup but the permissions are persistant.
And that is when I turned to discussions for help.
Having to do with user ID I wonder if it could be from outside my home??
I have a secure network password protected using AirPort 'n' series.

  • Weird message while repairing permissions

    Hi,
I was repairing the permissions on my MacBook Pro and during the repair I got the following message:
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences".
2007-10-29 17:36:07 -0400: ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library".
2007-10-29 17:36:07 -0400: ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root".
Does anyone have any idea what this means? I have no idea. Thanks

There are numerous but innocuous messages reported by Disk Utility when repairing permissions. See the following: Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.
These messages will occur each time you repair permissions, and they may be safely ignored.
