Repair permissions has these issues?

Are these anything to worry about? I have only had the macbook for about a month or so. The same errors have come up each time for about two weeks now. So I am assuming they dont get fixed.

  • "App store quit unexpectedly" - Neither "update combo" nor "repair permissions" has corrected the issue

I have already followed the instructions to delete the app and run the Update Combo, in fact I have done this twice. I have also repaired the permissions more than once.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the App Store to work again?

Check the startup disk ...  (not the same as repairing permissions)
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

  • Repairing permissions has taken days - and still going

After the slew of problems I had after upgrading to 10.5.2 it was suggested on one of these forums that I repair my permissions. I started that last Thursday morning - when I left work for the weekend on Friday afternoon it said "20 hours) still to go. This morning (Monday) I come in, it's still running, and says it has "One Day, 18 hours" left.
So that means it's been running for almost 4 straight days, with another couple to go (if the "one day, 18 hour" is to be believed".
If you open Force Quit it tells you the application's not responding, but if you sit there and watch the Disk Repair window you can see it processes a file about once every minute or so.
So far all of the messages have begun with "ACL found but not expected on..."
Mind you, I have two 1 TB hard drives installed, running as a mirror RAID.

You should "force quit" the application even if your TB drives are completely full.
Run fsck from bootup. This is a UNix command you can initiate from restart. Press the Apple and S keys at the same time as you boot. Then type in fsck -fy . Let it run to completion, and then type exit.
    The machine will reboot.
Then run "verify disk" in Disk Utility. Then run "repair permissions" for each disk separately.

  • Can't Repair Permissions and other issues

Just updated to 10.5.2 and started having some video problems. The laptop won't wake from sleep, or if it does, the screen may go blank again. Also, upon waking sometimes, the mouse seems sluggish almost as if there is a remote user. Tried repairing permissions and can't get it to repair permissions. Also, when I switch users or try to authorize installations, it tells me the user name or password of one of the administrator's is incorrect and I know it's not. Very strange things.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!

  • What does "Repair Permissions" mean?

Here are some official explanations from the Apple Knowledge Base.
The articles were written to apply to Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3, but they apply to 10.4 Tiger as well.
    Here's the short explanation:
"About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    Here's the excruciatingly in-depth explanation:
"Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712

How do preferences get wonked in the first place?
In the previous thread on "symphony install problems"
Allan Sharman, "symphony install problem", 06:04am Nov 8, 2005 CDT
I tried to explain the problem in some detail. But here's a more concise explanation from Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repair_permissions
    "Repair permissions
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Repairing disk permissions is a troubleshooting activity commonly associated with Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system.
The Darwin [Unix] layer of OS X manages which users are able to access which files by maintaining a list of Unix permissions for each file. Over time this data can become corrupted or get changed as applications edit the permissions to allow necessary file access, then get terminated before reverting them. The result of this is that in extreme circumstances the operating system may not allow itself to access files that it needs. This has been reported by users to result in the wide variety of errors already mentioned. Because of this, repairing permissions has become a standard troubleshooting first step to combat unexpected behaviour encountered on Mac OS X. Reparing permissions has been reported to fix problems with booting the system, misbehaving applications, Finder functions, malformed icons, problems with software installations and other problems besides. Although the necessity of carrying this process out as a maintenance activity has been called into question, some users claim that the process should be run on a weekly basis to prevent errors developing."

  • I'm frequently having to repair permissions to get internet access

I have using 10.4.11, using an ethernet adapter for wireless - which is working fine, green light and all. But then out of nowhere - after 10 minutes or so - the net connection stop working. I got my network settings on IP4, sometimes re-enter manually and have it set at DHCP w/manual (the adapter has a fixed IP it needs, apparently) trash stuff in my systemconfiguration file as recommend by BDAqua before .....
but what seems to do the trick is repairing permissions and rebooting. everytime I repair permissions, I get this message:
    Determining correct file permissions.
Group differs on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist, should be 80, group is 502
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
I am tired of having to put in all this time, just to get back to normal, especially since I seem to have to do it every half hour. I understand it has something to do with a Security Update, but I would love to know the long-term fix.
Thanks in advance for any and all help. If you don't hear from me for a while, I may be I'm not connected to the internet!

    Let's try more at once...
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, trash these files...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Repairing permissions before and after updating software

What is the reason to repair permissions before and after updating software? This may sound like a stupid question to many of you, but I am new to computers and I am trying to learn how and why of some of the things of my PowerBook. I installed some updates without repairing permissions. Did I install some software updates the wrong way? Thank you.

This is a topic which will draw as many emphatic for and against responses as overnight shut down or not, defrag or not, optimise or not, and so on.
I agree with Neil. I believe that OS X has progressed sufficiently that repair permissions has become redundant and so I do not do it on any regular basis.
Some folk may refer you to an Apple Support Article 303602. That Article in its 4 May 2006 version, titled "Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" suggested Repair Permissions should be done "after upgrading or installing new software". The Article was however revised on 15 May 2006 to be titled "Top Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" and the item on Repair Permissions [along with two other recommended maintenance tips] was removed. It is my view that the conclusion to be drawn here is that Apple no longer considers Repair Permissions to be a required maintenance procedure.
Many users have adopted a "Repair Permissions" mantra for a cure-all over several years. I dropped it sometime in 10.3.
    But, to each his own.

  • Repair Permissions does nothing?

I run Verify Permissions regularly, after I run verify, I usually get a few hundred entries needing repair (....should be...). So I hit Repair Permissions and it reports back the permissions were repaired. So I restart my Mac and do a "verify" again, and I get the exact same number of entries that need repair.
Does anyone know what the actual purpose is and why Verify/Repair Permissions even exists in the first place since it appears to do nothing other than tell me I have a bunch (hundreds) wrong permissions that it's can't seem to correct??

    Rob A. wrote:

    Why?

Oh wait, I missed that. Why Verify and not just Repair?
I usually get a few hundred entries needing repair
Do they need repair, or are they just being flagged as different from the current database?
(....should be...). So I hit Repair Permissions and it reports back the permissions were repaired.
Or does it just repair the ones that needed repairing?
    So I restart my Mac
    No need to do that.

As the operating system changes, the database is not updated to reflect those changes. Repair permissions sees these differences and notes them, but doesn't know how to handle them. It rightfully just leaves them alone.
When enough people who repair permissions when they don't need to report these anomalies to Apple, Apple gets around to posting a [Support Article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448] telling everyone that you can just ignore those errors. The SUID errors should be checked against Apple's document to verify that something else isn't writing those permissions nefariously.

  • Is it dangerous to repair permissions ?

i mean is there the smallest risk i lose some compatibility or access or data or whatever you want in all my system ??
(im working professionaly with my mac with Pro Tools installed and if some pro tools sessions do not open or miss some files its a drama for me get it..)

The reason for doing what is called a Safe Boot, (holding Shift at bootup), is many fold, 1st every file that is going to have permissions fixed will need the OS to know where it is & such, which is dependant on the Directory structure being correct, which Safe Boot runs a Disk check/repair at first step, next, with a Safe Boot most 3rd party extensions are turned off, (more just pure OSX running when we're repairing, less to possibly go wrong),.
Now it may very well be that none of this is needed, but I like to get as close to 0.0% chance of anything going wrong when writing things to the Hard Drive, just depends how important the data is compared to the time it takes to do the extra steps.
It does other things like clearing Font Caches & such also.
    >secondly, you confirm that if my appli skype does not want to open, repair permissions has no impact on this ?
Depends if Skype installs anything in the System's Folders, or just the User's Folders, Repair Permissions ONLY works on System's files. There is a tiny chance that files in User's folders might try to use something though in the System's various folders that could stop things from working if Permissions there were incorrect.
I hope I didn't make it sound to hard or complicated.
Do you have Backups of everything by the way?

  • Possible to run repair permissions before mac fully boots?

Is it possible to use a keyboard shortcut during boot, type in some code, and run disk utiliy or repair permissions?
Cause I would like to run it but the powerbook wont fully boot and my install disk is in a different city.
Can I use anyones leopard install cd or does it need to be mine?
    plz help
    Message was edited by: wroth

VK and Kenichi are right. Permissions have changed so don't run repair permissions from a non-Leopard disk.
However, repairing permissions has really become a "magical elixir" that is supposed to solve all kinds of problems. It won't.
Apple's official recommendation is not to run repair permissions from the install disk because a software update could have changed permissions. In any event, if your machine won't boot, repairing permissions won't help. Repairing the disk might.
The HFS+ file system hasn't changed in Leopard. If your machine won't boot, and all you have is a Tiger disk, running disk repair should be safe. After all, it is perfectly safe to have both Leopard and Tiger on the same machine and Tiger can and will run disk repair on its own when it boots up.
Hopefully I've salvaged something from my technical reputation.

  • Repair permissions with disk utility not showing details

I've recently upgraded from Lion OSX 10.7.5 directly to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3.
    1. Now, every time I use the Disk Utility to repair permissions, the details of the repair are missing. Not that I really need to see the repairs but the information confirmed that something was done. Now I see only what appears on the attached screen shot at the end of the repair.
When I had OSX 10.7, I always saw which files were repaired.
    2. Also, the estimated time for repair is off. Under Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3, the estimate says a fixed "1 minute" and remains so until finished. I just time the repair at 3.5 minutes and the estimate remained at 1 minute.
Under OSX 10.7 the repair time estimate would begin at 23 minutes or so then quickly work itself down in minutes until the repair was completed.
Can anyone tell me what's going with my iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.8.3).

    James --
Over the years, the function or understanding of Repair Permissions has changed drastically.  When I first came here in 2004, lots of people thought RP was the "be all, and end all" of all Mac problems. (Myself included.)  It was right up there with "take two aspirins, and call me in the morning." kind of response.
In fact, the notations you see are not in fact "errors."  They're notations.  And if you run them all day, you will almost always see the same ones over and over.
Every once in a while, if you experiences really wonky problems that seem unexplanable, the option to RP makes sense. Especially after a huge major application installation, especially Adobe apps
RP is not like a regular maintenance procedure.  So, if you're not expelriencing very significant problems with your Mac, repairing permissions is probably not a good use of your time.

I got the following sometime after updating to 10.5.1. Eudora 6.4 hangs/crashes after it gets mail. OK, I switched to Mail for now. Today Mail hung/crashed, and then iPhoto (iLife '08) *really hung* and even Force Quit wouldn't come on...had to force Shut Down on the PowerPC, then restart. I followed with Repair Permissions.
