Repair Permissions: list remains very long

How serious could the following be:
After repeated reruns of Repair Permissions, a very long list remains on my Main Disk of only three classes of defects, to wit
AA—nine times of the type:
Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/PlugIns/FRSources.frappliance/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
BB—several hundreds of times of the type:
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/zh_CN.lproj/Library/Sounds",
(as well as two of the type: ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities").
CC—two times of the type:
Permissions differ on "sbin/restore", should be -r-xr-xr-x , they are -r-sr-sr-x .
Warning: SUID file "sbin/restore" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Observation:
all, with the exception of CC, are located in "System/Library/…",
and
"Disk Repair" is OK.

You're very welcome, Steven.
Just so you know, I used to run repair perms all the time.
I thought it was a maintenance procedure.
It's not, really. The only time to run it is if something's wrong (which is why you ran it)
or after installing major apps (but many folks that I respect here, say it isn't necessary even then.)
Five years ago, it was the "be all and end all" to maintaining a "healthy" Mac. Not so anymore.
So, do read a few of the threads from the link.
You'll find TONS of people wringing their hands over the RP notations.
"I ran it over and over, and the 'errors' are still there!"
I read a few of your most recent posts, and I realized that you've been trying to get things squared away. I hope you're all fixed now, but if not, don't ever hesitate to come back any time.

I think this definitely is indicative of why I have been having trouble running my web host, as I always get the message 'cannot connect to localhost.' However, why did permissions repair not repair these permissions? It seems that it just essentially ran verify permissions instead.
I ran sudo diskutil repairpermissions /

  • Trouble Repairing Permissions

I am concerned about my MacBook Pro that I am running Lion on... recently I had to force quit the finder. Everything seemed to check out using TechTool Pro 6. Repairing permissions takes a very long time. Any suggestions?

Is the Finder constantly misbehaving, or did it just happen once?
If the latter, I would not worry too much about it. It happens.

  • Fast scroll in a very long song list

How to scroll a little faster on the iPod, if the song list is very long? With the iPod wheel it's a nightmare. Or is there any possibility of searching (I mean inside iPod not with iTunes)? Please, help me, my finger gets already hot from the iPod wheel.

Thank's for the answer, but I keep spinning the wheel all the time and it takes me uncountable rotations to come to the end (the song list has about 8000 songs).
Does it mean my iPod is faulty?
By the way, is there not a trick to jump quickly to a certain position (for instance to the end).
Anyway, following thing should be possible: If you are at the beginning of the song list and you start spinning the wheel anticlockwise, then it should take you to the end of the list. On my iPod 5th generation 60GB it's also impossible -> That hurts.

  • Why Repairing Permissions takes so Long

Is it normal for the Leopard Disk Utility to take a really long time to Verify and/or Repair Permissions?
Repairing Permissions under Tiger was not bid deal bug in Leopard it really seems slow. There is now a timer but it it not even close. The one minutes can turn into 5 to 15 minutes. I wonder if the delay means there is something wrong with my installation?
    arkay

There are more permissions for Leopard to check than there were in Tiger. I'm not sure that is the complete explanation but repair permissions does take a long, long time in Leopard and the progress indicator being stuck on 1 minute for so long adds insult to injury. You can post a complaint about it to Aople Feedback.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I've not found that verifying permissions is noticeably faster than repairing them so I never use the verify function.

  • Lion Disc Utility won't repair permissions

I purchased a MacBook Pro that came with Snow Leopard loaded.  I was given a free Lion upgrade, which I downloaded. When I ran Disc Utility to repair Permissions I get a long list of "library" errors that are supposedly repaired. However, when I ran it again to verify the repair, all of the errors were back. I did this 4 times, restarting twice, then called Apple who walked me through the repair and it still didn't work.
I surmise the errors are the result of loading Lion over Snow Leopard since my Mac Mini that came with Lion doesn't have the problem.  Are these library errors anything to worry about?  Anyone know if Apple's working on the problem?
    Thanks,
    Linda

here you go .... This makes the 7th time I've "repaired permissions" and I get the same list each time.

  • Is repair permissions working?

Typically when I repair permissions, which is about once a week, I get an immediate responce from disk utility in the form of a running list of permissions that it is repairing. For about the last month or so, I've noticed that when I either verify or repair permissions, I get no list. Only a message that it is verifying/repairing, and a message that it is complete.
I'm wondering if anyone else is noticing this, and/or if anyone knows what might be up. I find it hard to believe that my computer is suddenly free of bad permissions all the time.
    thanks much -
    iMac G5 20inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Jeff,
    Good News.
One of the improvements listed in the 10.4.6 Update was that Disk Utility's repair permissions feature will no longer report "We are using special permissions for..." messages.

  • Repairing Permissions Issue in 10.6.5

Hello to all. I just started using my new iMac running 10.6.5 and whenever I repair permissions, I get this long list every time. In other words, Disk Utility reports that they are repaired but the same ones reappear again the next time. A report follows and I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

[At the risk of being redundant|http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?threadID=&q=repair+permissio ns&objID=&dateRange=all&userID=Barney-15e&numResults=30],
The repair permissions database (or whatever it is) doesn't get updated regularly with the updates themselves. So, when the updates change things, the repair permissions database doesn't know about them, and flags them. They are not wrong, nor are they problems. The best way to not see those things is to not repair permissions unless you have a need to.
When do you have a need to? When something indicates it can't continue because it can't access a file that it should or doesn't have permission to do so. And, that is only true if it is trying to access something in the system space. If it is in your home folder, repairing permissions won't fix it.
Unless you actually have a permission problem, you don't need to repair permissions.

  • After repairing permissions, do I need to "verify"?

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to get iDVD working; I keep getting a multiplexing error and the disk ejects when I try to burn a DVD. It was suggested I repair permissions, which I did. However, I was then presented with an option to "verify" the repairs to permissions. Is this a necessary step in repairing permissions?
    Thanks very much.
FYI: When I repaired permissions the first time, I didn't verify and iDVD still won't burn a DVD. I'm just wondering if "verifying" would help.
    Thanks again,
    Vic

How does the particular user account affect burning a DVD?
That suggestion is to check whether there is an error on a particular user account. If it doesn't show up in another account, there is.
now I have about 90 GB of free space
Then we can rule that out!
I'm using Fuji disks, which I've burned to before without any problems
Yep, they are usually trouble free.
I'm even using a short, stand-alone .mov file (exported from FCE4)
That could be a hint. Is it in widescreen?

Is there a sure-fire way for me to check whether there's a problem with my Superdrive?
You could trry cleaning it using a standard CD/DVD lens cleaner using tiny brushes. Or try burning something else (a different project perhaps) to see if that works.
I think it was during something called "Creating Lead-in" or something like that? and says something that includes the words, "...media error"
We may be getting warmer. Could be dud DVD. Try another.
    Post back with results!

  • CANNOT REPAIR PERMISSIONS - pls help!

While booted from my restore disk (with Disk Utility Open & attempting to repair permissions), D.U. goes about 33% of the way & stops/displays the following onscreen message: Disk Utility Internal Error
Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.
I used DiscWarrior to rebuild the directories & then ran TechToolPro 4 from my eDrive to check Volume Structures (came up clean).
For the heckuvit, ran D.U. from my Apps Utility Folder. This time it did complete, making some changes. Ran a second time. Results of each are shown below.

This has to do with a problem with the latest update and Panther and iTunes.
    Tip offered by Kappy and others in the 10.3& earlier Forum;
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.
    Offered by Bee;
    Kappy, et all . . .
This was posted earlier today . . .
I'll have to get the author's name, sorry don't have it now.
It seems that it may not necessary to pull iTunes out of the App folder:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case,
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Then see if you can repair permissions.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
    Cheers!

  • Repair Permissions - Long list, but ultimately repaired?

This happened ever since I had upgraded to Snow Leopard a year ago on two different hard drives.
When I run Repair Disk Permissions, I get a huge long list, which ultimately results in the end note saying that Permssions repair complete.
Each time I run it, it is the same thing, a long list lasting 7-minutes followed by Permissions repair complete.
    Is this normal?
Should there be no permissions to repair at all?

    JulieK23 wrote:
    Is this normal?
Yes, and you can ignore what you see. For the most part, repairing permissions is not needed unless you have a problem requiring such.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • How do I highlight or color duplicates in a very long list?

I have a very long list of items
    some of them are duplicates.
There are all in one collumn.
In excel there is a funciton that
allows me to highlight cells that
    are duplicates.
Is there an equivalent way to do
    that in Numbers?

    yegyan wrote:
too bad theres no way to do it without
    adding a new collumn
    yy,
The entire process of creating the example and posting it here took a couple of minutes. Less time, I'm sure, than it would take me to figure out how to find duplicates in Excel if I was still an Excel user. It's what you plan to do with the information on duplicates that will take the bulk of the time, I think.
Step by step (for column B):
Click on a cell in the data column
Type Option-RightArrow to create a new column next to column B
Type =COUNTIF(B,B) in the new column, just opposite the first data in column B
Select the cell with the equation you just typed and type Command-C
Shift-Click the last cell in the new column
    Command-V
That business may take 30 seconds.
If you wish to format the backgtround fill option, go immediately to the Cells Inspector and click on Conditional Format and enter the condition and formatting options.
That's another 30 seconds if you are familiar with the process.
The theme with this and many other situations where Excel features are lacking in Numbers is that Numbers is a much leaner application than Excel. It's a different product, not a clone. There are a few painful gaps and differences and many unique advantages in Numbers. It's best to remain flexible. If Excel suits you better, use it.

  • Repair permissions runs very slow

    Hi,
I have Leopard 'erase and installed' and am delighted with how much more quickly it boots now - even after re-installing my programs.
1: However, one thing is very slow. Repair permissions in Disk Utility shows estimated time less than one minute but it takes 15 minutes or more. It finds thousands of problems! Then when I run it again to check that all is well it takes just as long and reports having done the same repairs. And again. So the repairs are not actually getting done...
    Some are like this:
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/French.lproj/Sites".
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/French.lproj/Library/Assistants".
and much more like this about HP
Group differs on "Library/Application Support/hp/hppa/Plugins/ArbitraryCommand.plugin/Contents/Resources/es.lproj", should be 80, group is 20.
So there is a problem with the Hp printer install and also with the French language package that cannot be cured. Should I remove and re-install them? (I wouldn't know how to remove the language pack.)
2: Perhaps this is related. From time to time my computer cannot close down. It seems to, but when I close the lid the white light comes on solid and I have to hold the power key down. Then, on restart, I get the message that the computer was not shut down correctly.
I would be glad of any advice on this permissions issue. LJ

    Ray and all,
I called Apple Care who have concluded that there is a hardware problem (because restart will not work) and that I should take to the Apple centre. They did all the diagnostics, resetting PRAM etc. But I am far from home so not so convenient. I did a lot of stuff with Leopard cache cleaner and here is the outcome.
When I do "light cleaning" on just the local cache, a reboot command is executed and it reboots normally. Every time! (I tried typing reboot in terminal but it is not allowed.) So this method of rebooting works and hence I doubt that there is a hardware problem.
Now, I remember that in my first few reboots after installing Leopard there used to be a message momentarily flashed up about emptying a cache - which no longer appears. Does anyone know if there is a normal shutdown routine of emptying caches that should be always run?
Thanks a lot for the help. I am sure that LCC is as good as Onyx

  • Very slow repair permissions?

Is anyone else getting a very slow rate of progress when they try to repair disk permissions after upgrading to Leopard? This happens either using Disk Utility or Macaroni.

In 10.4.10, repairing permissions went quite fast on my iMac. In Leopard, it's taking about 4 to 5 times as long. This is using Disk Utility.
