Repair permissions stuck at 2 minutes for half an hour

my wife's macbook (white plastic) gets stuck when repairing permissions.
i tried reinstalling OS X snow leopard and then installing the 10.6.2 combo update, but it still sticks at 2 minutes. anyone else experience this?

I haven't but try Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Click Repair Permissions.
Restart your computer when done.
Try running repair permissions after you reach the desktop to see if it completes.

I suggest that you try to use Tiny Umbrella to kick your device out of recovery
The link to download Tiny Umbrella is shown below
    http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
On the right hand side of the link you will see links to download Tiny Umbrella
After downloading and opening tiny umbrella, Click on exit out of recovery. Hope that works for you. If it doesnt work, try to write a detailed description of your problem and what is appearing on your screen etc and we will go from there. Good Luck

  • Yosemite upgrade stuck at x minutes for 10+ hours

    Hi,
This is for the 6th time I am trying to upgrade.
It was a terrible idea, never faced it in my happy 10 years using a mac.
I wanted to upgrade it, it downloaded and now trying to upgrade for 14 hours straight.
The machine is running from last 40 hours, it is a Mid 2010 macbook pro.
Simply it is stuck at 4 minutes ( this is new, earlier it stuck at 3 minutes for 6 hours ) and log quota exceeded.
    Please help.
Yes, I have tex, homebrew all these sort of stuff installed.
I promise never to upgrade to a free OS  ( unless it is my kubuntu from where Iam typing it in )  again.
But for this time please help.
I have upgraded 4 times on different macs, never ever had this much trouble.
    When it would end?

I finally decided that enough it enough, and cleaned the disk drive and installed Mac OS X.
I could back up data, and that was good enough for me.
    Everything is fine.
I suggest anyone facing the issue should do the same.

Get another good pair of headphones and compare the plugs.  Look for damage or differences. Maybe the end had broken off causing your problem.  The try the other set in the iPod.

  • IPhone 4s wont turn on? Plugged in for half an hour?

My iPhone 4s wont turn on, it's been plugged in for half an hour (to the wall, if it matters). When I try to turn it, the battery pops up. It doesn't show the plug, so there isn't anything wrong with the charger and it is charging. Why won't it turn on? How can I fix this?

Reset the phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons until an Apple logo appears. If that doesn't resolve the problem you may have a bad battery.

  • Repairing permissions hangs with 1 minute to go

Having sleep problems on a new 10.5.2 MacBook. Decided to repair permissions and then do Combo updater to 10.5.4
The bar gets to about 20% with 1 minute remaining and then it seemingly hangs - though you can see the bar pulsating.
I tried just verifying permissions and the same thing happens.
Tried verifying the disk and all is well.

    Charlie,
Thanks. After posting I found a forum that said to have patience. ( I had searched previously before posting).
I waited it out and it took about 15 minutes.
I was surprised because my MacBook Pro running Leopard does not seem to take so long. The other forum suggested that deselecting multiple foreign languages at install may make a difference.
    thanks

  • Apple TV update stuck on step 1 for over 2 hours. Am on wifi. What do I do?

Apple TV update is stuck on step 1 for 2 +hours. I am on wifi.

  • IPad Air iOS 8.1 stuck at "update requested" for over 24 hours

I requested the update for the iPad Air, mini2 and iPhone 5s. The later two updates quite smoothly but no luck for the iPad Air.
It has been in the "update requested" for over 24 hours, and even worse, any App Store app cannot updated nor download any new app.
I have tried the hard reset, reset network settings, and reboot for at least 5 times. Anybody meeting the same problem?

Oh how embarrassing and frustrating! I contributed to that other thread, which was specifically about iPad Air! My iPhone 6 was still updating apps just fine, and I had not bothered to delete the WSJ app from it, since I assumed it was not bothering it. Well, we know what happens when you "***-ume" (but no reflection on you, floydcui , just ME).
I just deleted the WSJ app from my newsstand, restarted my iPhone and restarted my WiFi. INSTANTLY IOS 8.1 STARTED DOWNLOADING.
You're right, how could one app cause so much frustration? I posted a comment to apple support how poisonous the WSJ app is, and I left a warning review among the hundreds already on the WSJ app page.

  • Stuck at 29 minutes for the past 2 hrs.

After hitting 'install' to start the installation process I get a the usual noise since the comptuer is reading off of the DVD, but once this initial movement stops the system seems to stall or something and no more progress is made. Sometimes I'll hear one or two reads from the Snow Leopard disk, but nothing regular. It just sits there "installing" while not making any progress. It's not frozen or anything since I can manipulate the mouse and quit the install if I wish, but it seems like nothing is happening. Occasionally the screen will dim and try to go to sleep if I don't manipulate the mouse (it shouldn't be doing this while installing should it?).
I'm trying to do a erase and install if that matters, so if there's any full proof methods you guys got, I'd appreciate any help you can offer.
    Thanks for the help!
    Rick.

Update: I let it sit while I went to bed and the progress bar moved to ~70%, so maybe the slowness was due to a bad format? Just to be sure, I restarted and followed these steps:
    1. Select a drive from the list of drives and volumes. Each drive in the list will display its capacity, manufacturer, and product name, such as 232.9 GB WDC WD2500JS-40NGB2.
    2. Click the ‘Erase’ tab.
    3. Enter a name for the drive. The default name is Untitled. The drive's name will eventually appear on the desktop, so it's a good idea to choose something that's descriptive, or at least more interesting than "Untitled."
    4. Select a volume format to use. The Volume Format dropdown menu lists the available drive formats that the Mac supports. The format type that I recommend using is ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled).' (This is what I used)
    5. Click the ‘Security Options’ button. A Security Options sheet will display multiple secure erase options.
    6. Select ‘Zero Out Data’ from the list of options. This option will perform a test on the hard drive as it writes zeros to the drive's platters. During the test, Disk Utility will map out any bad sections it finds on the drive's platters so they can't be used. This helps ensure that you won't be able to store any important data on a questionable section of the hard drive. This erase process can take a fair amount of time, depending on the drive's capacity.
    7. Make your selection and click the ‘OK’ button. The Security Options sheet will disappear.
    8. Click the ‘Erase’ button. Disk Utility will unmount the volume from the desktop, erase it, and then remount it on the desktop.
It's saying "Writing zeros to disk. Estimated time: 4 days, 16 hours" Is it possible my hard drive is dying, and this is the reason the estimated time is so long on a mere 160GB hard drive? I'm not hearing any movement of the disk or anything and the progress bar looks like it hasn't moved since it's start

  • TS3991 how long does icloud take to sink? My scrolling Icaon has been up for half an hour

I am loading I cloud on a new windows 8 system. CThe scrolling icon has been loading for over a half hourIs this normal.

I went to Apple Chat and they lead me through a power down and start up with Recovery Disc Utility (Hold down  Apple and R keys when powering up).
Then was instructed to run Disk Recovery and it showed HD was error free. Then a reboot started up fine to desktop and showed update to 10.9.2 had been installed. I am guessing the internet connection my have been interrupted during the install.
Apple Chat folks are awesome and a short wait too.
