Repair Permissions WARNING msgs?

I am trying to upgrade to Snow and have the following (partial) list of issues when I repair my disk permissions:
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/AppleMobile DeviceHelper.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/AppleMobile Sync.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
Permissions differ on "Library/Printers/EPSON/EPSON PIC Folder", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxrwxrwx .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Extensions/webdavfs.kext/Contents/Resources/loadwebdav" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "Library/QuickLook/iWork.qlgenerator/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are lrw-rw-r-- .
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard without addressing the WARNING: items safely or do I need to seek professional help and clean up those issues before I upgrade? And what are those WARNING: lines trying to tell me anyway?
I truly appreciate any insight you may have to allow me to upgrade with confidence.

You can safely ignore those messages:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.
Permissions repair complete
That's the punch-line! If it says that you are good to go!

  • Repairing permissions (Error msg. not understood)

    Good evening,
So far my erase all/install of Leopard has gone smoothly on my 2Ghz Duo macbook, however I recently went in to Disk Utility to repair permissions and this popped up after it completed. (As a side note, repairing the permissions didn't take nearly as long on Tiger, not did it cause the fan to go into overdrive?)
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
What does this mean, and is it a a possible problem? I don't understand.
    Thanks in advance

There are a couple of other threads about this already. Search discussions using these words: Permissions Warning
You'll see a bunch of threads about the same thing.
Basically, I think I remember something being mentioned about Apple Script. Incidentally, I had the same problem.

  • Repair Permissions warning message

Running Repair Permissions on my start-up disc running OS X 10.6, I get the message:
"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
Is this serious?  Do I need to do anything about it?
    Thanks for any help.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program
    drwxrwxrwx

    |  |
    |  group

    owner
    a little more info
Before the user had read & write. A member of the group had read.
After, only the user had read & write.

  • Repairing Permissions Warning: Remote Management

I'm not sure what discussion forum to place this, but since upgrading to Leopard when I run Repairing Permisssions on my HD I get his message:
"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
Anyone know the cause or meaning? Thanks!

    Hi
Loads of threads all over the forums, this is a issue known to Apple & will, probably, be fixed with an update. It refers to Apple Remote Desktop & is nothing to worry about (apparently).

  • After Repairing Permissions, "Warning: SUID file. . ."  So, is it a concern

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I don't what this means, nor even where to begin to find out. Thoughts.

Hi VALman, a list of repairable items are gone indeed. I used the OS on OCZ-V30GbSSD and the Home Folder from WD-1TbBC before by Leopard with this message then I login to a Guest Account change the Home Folder back to my OS drive with new UUID as well. Then fast user switching OK, new Finder window, run Maintenance software, shut down. Turn on, rename as previous and change back the Home Folder to the WD-Caviar. All this happened when I renamed the drive by adding new icon&name for "fun".
So I don't know if your system description is up to date, mine is Octo- Nehalem.

  • Repair Permissions Warning

I always get the following message when I repair the permissions with disc utility:
    Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x .
I find informations on the forums and in the Apple Support pages about SUID files, but not on those mentioned warnings...
    What is it?

Ignore it. It just means the group has write permissions. On my machine the group is _lp, which Disk Utilitity also thinks is wrong (although personally I think it is correct and Disk Utilities' data base is wrong), and I believe the _lp group really ought to have write permissions to a cache folder. Mine does. All of which is perfectly irrelevant to all "regular" users anyway, since we do nothing involving cups. It is for certain network print server functions in a UNIX system. If you just have a printer and plug it into your computer to print, the folder in question will never be written to by anything at all.

  • Warnings notice after repairing permissions

After upgrading to 10.5.1, I noticed the following Warnings after I repaired permissions:
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writecon fig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Any idea of what's causing these warnings? Is this a problem I should correct or worry about?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This looks like a carbon copy to the message I found after repairing permissions. It happened as well after installing Mac OS X Leopard. I verified my Startup Disk, it checked out ok. The reason why I did these repair and verification moves was because my Toast 8 crashed each time upon trying to start it up. I had no problems with it before, neither with any prior Toast version, down to Toast 2 (I believe, I started with Toast 2). When I installed the Leopard I did an upgrade only, not an "erase and install." I just dreaded to do a zillion re-installations of all applications. I hope somebody comes up with some good suggestions. Or is it possible that this has to do with those typical bugs that seem to be unavoidable at the release of a new system software?

  • 10.5.1: Disk Repair Permissions and SUID's

In 10.5.0 I had 3 entries while repairing permissions:

    The ACL lines have disappeared.
Can anybody explain this? And should I be concerned?
    Thanks Chuck

Frankly, I think there are few to any warnings that Repair Permissions throws that you should be worried about, EVER.
People think repairing permissions "repairs" things. It really doesn't "repair" anything. It CHECKS permissions against a set of files which indicate what they were when things were installed. If these permissions were changed in some way (sometimes, this was done INTENTIONALLY), repair permissions will throw errors or warnings, which can be benign.

    Now what? :o)
P.S. As a smiley maker, I must protest the lack of smilies on this forum!

Just ignore those error messages. They mean nothing. People are always asking about them. I have no idea why Apple put them there.
    You want smilies?
(I could go on. There are lots more).

It sounds like you used the 10.5.1 update using Software Update.
Download the larger 110MB file of 10.5.1 directly from Apple and this will most likely take care of all but one SUID warning.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1051update.html
The remaining warning is normal and will cause no problems.

Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.

  • Warning message when repairing permissions

I Just repaired permissions and the usual large list showed up. But this time I got a message that says:
"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreService...ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I navigated to that site and could not find a SUID file. Does anyone know what that stands for and could this be a problem?
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Rich

    Thanks Macjack,
I seemed to get that response after updating to 10.6.7 and my confusion is that when I go to Core Service Folder in the Library, I don't even see any SUID File at all? And this is the first time I have ever received a warning that a file has been modified and not repaired. Have you seen a warning like this before?
