Repair recommendation

I dropped my 2 1/2 year old 40 GB.
now it's stuck in pause locked (hold), wont go to unpause. I live down block from an Apple store. but I'm happy to UPS it elsewhere if others have recommendations. what would you venture it would cost to repair? thanks. How does the Apple store compare in price to 3rd party vendors?

"How does the Apple store compare in price to 3rd party vendors?"
Expensive. Apple will just replace it for a fee of $249 (that's if they'll replace it at all since the damage was caused by accident).

  • IBook repair recommendation- Apple?

Hi- I have an iBook G4 that is broken- freezes on boot, sometimes before getting to the finder, sometimes once the finder has started, sometimes doesn't get to boot at all.
Fails AHT with an error about the video RAM, but also won't work in target mode- so basically something is fried on the logic board.
Looking for recommendations on repair- does Apple have a flat rate repair for iBooks if I just carry it to an Apple Store, or am I better going to an independent or one of the mail in services- I trust Apple more but don't want to spend a lot more money than another option.
Any chance these logic board issues will get picked up in a recall? i am starting to read about this a bit- this computer is out of warranty (it is a friends, as I always buy AppleCare) but only by about six months, and has been well cared for- my sister's iBook G4 went through like six motherboards while under warranty before they gave her a new one.

Since the Hardware Test fails, and there is no AppleCare, I suggest still taking it into an Apple Authorized Service Center near you and compare the price and time it would take to what you might be able to get from one of these two places as well:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
Any chance these logic board issues will get picked up in a recall?
As for the answer to the above question, that is the kind of question you won't find an answer to here, as it would require speculation.

  • IPad took a dive, glass shattered, looking for some repair recommendations

My daughter's iPad 3 landed face down last night and shattered the glass.  It still functions properly, so I know it needs only the glass replaced and not the LCD.  I found 4 companies which look like reasonable candidates (actually I got them from another ASC thread...)
    http://www.repairzoom.com ~$120
    http://www.imobilerescue.com ~$166
    http://www.i99repair.com ~101
    http://www.iheartrepair.com ~$145
Does anybody here have any experience with these places and willing to give a recommendation?  A warning?  A recommendation of another place?
The most expensive place makes a big deal about how they use OEM glass -- and I would be willing to pay more for that if I heard a strong argument from folks here.  The other places claim top quality parts, but not OEM parts.  Any thoughts?

If you comfortable using a screen protector and the iPad works fine that way, then that sounds like the least expensive option at this time.  Eventually you will want a new iPad anyway.
Be sure to keep an up to date backup of the content, either on your computer or in iCloud...a device with a broken screen can suddenly stop working.  Keep it up to date so you don't lose your content.
A third-party, nonApple authorized service may do just as good repair work...but, again, the down side is loss of support from Apple if anything else goes wrong.
If you buy off eBay, be VERY cautious...there have been a number of users lately asking what to do with a purchase they cannot activate...an iOS 7 device with Find My turned on cannot be reset to factory condition without the user's Apple ID and password...not even Apple can help with it.  So be absolutely sure you are buying a device that is clean and you can use.
Best of luck to you, and Happy New Year.

  • BSOD at power on: Startup Repair: Repeat: Unresponsive to anything

My situation seems different than the BSOD Win 7 issues I have read about.  I can get no response.
Just got a new Lenovo G570 two weeks ago.  Came loaded with Win 7 SP1 64 bit.
Now, at power up the BSOD flashes and goes to Startup Repair and then shuts itself down.  Repeat.  And repeat. And repeats with no response. The first run though it reported  "AutoFailure" and "Unknown Cause."  The second or third time, "AutoFailure" and "Unknown System Configuration Change."
Since I can get no response to anything, I pulled the power cord.  Let it sit over night.
I booted from disc. (I get points for having burned the Recovery Disc!)  The computer went directly to Startup Repair and reports: "AutoFailure" and "No root cause".  I was able to get the computer to respond at this point and went to Advanced Options.
Ran the Memory test.  No issues.
Then ran the Memory diagnotic tool from disc in Extended.  Nothing.
I haven't had the computer long enough to create an Image.  I do get points for having burned a Recovery Disc!
Of course, the System Restore can't find any of the auto Restore point or manual Restore points I created.
This may or may not be part of the problem.  Originally the EE Bott Optimizer ran great.  Then it crazy, continually rebooting, not allowing me to cancel and if I could get it to cancel, it would restart in a few minutes and shut the system down.  I posted here and I was told uninstall and reinstall.  So I did.  Seem fine.  A few hours latter....... not so good.
From what I have been reading, this sounded like a hardware failure.  Two techs, not from Lenovo, have confirmed it is a hardware failure.  Great, two weeks and...
    Any way, any recommendations?
    Thanks for your help!

I am having a similr issue with my Lenovo G770.  I usually escape out of the boot optimizer.  Today I let it run and it went to the "starting windows" screen with a brief startup of the windows 7 animation...it freezes for a second, then a quick flash of the bsod, then to the "windows error recovery page" giving me the option of "starting windows normally" or "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)."
Starting Windows Normally eventually brings me back to the same place after repeating what I just stated above paragraph.
Startup Repair "Cannot repair this computer automatically".
So I go to view advanced options for system recovery and support.
It brings me to 5 options:
Startup Repair (we already tried this above)
System Restore (unfortunately I didn't create any restore points)
System Image Recovery (unfortunately I haven't created an image to recover)
Windows Memory Diagnostic (no problems found-done several times)
Command Prompt (don't know what I can do here except for remove a bad/corrupted driver which may be the problem, but I don't know the driver name that is associated with the boot optimizer...can anyone tell me this?)
I've tried booting to safe mode in all of its incarnations and I can't even do that..it repeats the same things as stated above...windows 7 animation briefly starts then locks up, flash of bsod, then the windows error recovery page.
I've tried booting to last known good configuration (same thing occurs...brief startup of windows 7 animation, freeze, flash of bsod, then error recovery page.
The only thing that has given me any kind of result was "disabling system restart on system failure."  When I do this, the BSOD doesn't flash briefly..it stays. and it gives me the error message page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.  Not being able to boot into Safe Mode even is really frustrating.  Any advise from anyone?  can I remove the driver associated with the boot optimizer?  If so, what is the name of the driver?

I have the exactly same issue.
When I go System Image Recovery -->Select System Image-->Advanced->I can open all the drives [:Local Drive(C , LENOVO(D, Local Disk(E, Boot(X-where i think executable booting is here]. It comes with an Open prompt asking me to enter File Name with a File type: Setup Information.
I don't know which setup information and where to find it on my Drives.
    Anyone know how to fix?
I was trying to re-install Win 7 from DVD but it is not executing either.
Can I boot with USB Ubuntu and Install Win 7 from there??? but how?

  • HP mini not running windows

    Hey everyone.
First thing first, I'm quite technology challenged and thanks for reading.
Basically I uses the notebook last night ok and then this morning it no longer loads up windows.
    When started I get the following messages;
'Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware of softwear may be the cause' (or similar)
It then goes on about 'if windows files have been damaged or configured' etc and then gives me the options of 'Launch Startup Repair (recommended)' and 'Start WIndows Normally'.
Launch Startup repair leads me to a screen that tells me to insert the windows installation disc (no drive) or contact the computer manufacturer for help.
    Other information and more likely more useful than my description is the following on the same screen;
    Status:  0xc000000f
Info: The bot selection failed because a required device is inaccessable
My product details are HP mini 210-1014sa
I am running windows 7 starter.
I know the info goes on a bit but wanted to cover everything but let me know if I have missed anything out.  I am still able to to use the default system that comes with it but that is very restricted as some of the things I use ask for a more modern browser etc.
    Thanks Lee.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 1334us won't start after windows update, stuck in Error Recovery

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv6 1334us with 32bit-windows 7. The computer did automatic updates and when it started up said there was another one avaliable through WIndows Updater. I installed the update and it said the computer needed to restart for the update to take effect. I choose to restart and the computer wouldn't boot back up, it boots to the 'Windows Error Recovery' screen where my options are 'Launch Startup Repair (recommended)' and 'Start Windows Normally'. When I select the repair, it says it loads windows files, then goes back to the error recovery screen. When I choose to start normally, it freezes the second it trys to start, flashes a blue screen and then returns to the Error Recovery page again.

  • Re-Installing Snow Leopard Nightmare

Having had a rocky year using Snow Leopard with regular crashes and slow running programs I have now (since updating to 10.6.6) had a complete system failure. I booted up from the System DVD supplied with the machine and ran the disk utilities which showed a mammoth list of bad disk permissions, the disk utilities program was unable to fix these and stated that the only course was to erase the disk and re-install the system software. I erased and started the re-install which failed a third of the way through saying that the support files could not be copied so the installation has failed, I tried re-installing several times but the install would not work. I found some posts on a few sites with similar issues which said the issue was with the Optical drive not being able to correctly read the dual layer DVD, the suggestion was to create a install disk on a flash drive, which I have done, this to has failed for the same reason.
I have now Zero erased the hard drive, checked it for problems and still it will not install. Anyone got any bright ideas?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    That may be normal:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
stated that the only course was to erase the disk and re-install the system software.
That makes me wonder if you're mixing a message from a "permissions repair" operation with a message from a "disk repair" operation. I' haven't noticed a "permissions repair" recommend a system reinstall.
I have now Zero erased the hard drive, checked it for problems and still it will not install.
If in Disk Utility you select the boot drive (not volume), what do you see for "S.M.A.R.T." status at the bottom of the window?

  • Windows update failures over the past several months

I'm having the same issues regarding windows update failures as many documented in this forum. I have run the repairs recommended, drive scans, etc. with no success. I'm at the point that I think that it would be better to cut off the update notice. I have

You may be right.  Try eliminating WU from a symptom description.  E.g. pick one of the updates which is available as a download and try installing it that way.  Just use WU as a guide for what you should download and install manually.
I imagine that if that works eventually WU will repair itself and realize that it doesn't need to do anything else for you.
A search to support the idea of manual download and install acting as a workaround for this symptom:

Another suggestion which could be implied by your diagnostics would be to uninstall your Norton package (and any of the other interferers which are mentioned that would be suspect).  Norton is notorious for interference with updating and is also known
to interfere even when it is supposedly disabled and is also known interfere even when it has supposedly been uninstalled, so who knows what the cause of the problem is, corruption or blocking, you could at least change your POQexec.log by taking such
    manual action.
BTW what have you done exactly about trying to repair WU?  You could save yourself a lot of manual effort if you could get it working properly.
Otherwise, on the manual update tack I would try doing first the ones which arrive in pieces.  Search WindowsUpdate.log for  Downloading  for clues that way.

If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start Windows Normally.

My laptop has Windows 7 Home Prem OA MEA operating system.
    Can you please assist?

    Hi @Sithembiso
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook and issues with Windows 7 and starting up. Try performing a hard reset.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the issue.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7.
If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Satellite C660D froze and does not start - Windows failed to start

Ok pretty much the most dense person you will ever likely to meet when it comes to things like this. but will try my best to explain.
Couple of days ago my laptop froze on me resulting on me having to turn it off and start it again by the power button. When I started it again the message below appeared.
    WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY
Windows failed to start . A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If windows files have been damaged or configured in incorrectly, start up repair can help and diagnose the problem, if power was interrupted during start up, choose start windows normally.
    -Launch Start up repair (recommended)
    -Start windows normally
When I press Launch Start up repair it goes to a screen with a big cursor (which you can move around) but nothing else happens.
When I pressed on the start windows normally setting it went through to the windows logo whilst starting up but then stalls at this point.
My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense :p
    Thanks for looking
    Dean

    >My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense
I think its easy to fix but you would need an Toshiba Recovery disk.
Did you create one in the past?
If not, try to start the HDD recovery: power up the unit, press F8. Now choose Repair my Computer.
Now new Window should open and here you should choose Toshiba HDD recovery option. This would set the notebook back to factory settings.
In case this isnt possible, you would need to boot from a recovery disk to reinstall the system.

  • My HP laptop doesn't start any longer

Hi every one in the forum. I've got a startup problem with my hp laptop. it is a dv7 1175nr with 64 bits windows vista. the laptop suddenly went off yesterday while i was listening to music and on charge. on my first attempt to turn it on, it booted partially and went off again. on my second  attempt , a message came up on a black screen with startup options with one of them "startup repair(recommended)" . the computer went off immidiately after the message. the laptop no longer came on on every other attempt to turn it on. I observed that the ac adapter wasn't warm which made me to suspect it was a problem with the adapter. secondly, the LED beside the ac adapter port does not come on when adapter is connected to an ac supply. I really wonder if the problem is that my adapter got bad and the computer ran out of charge or that the computer its self has a problem. My worry is that the computer is just 11months old and I have just a few weeks to go for my waranty to expire. I intend to foward the problem to hp if it turns out to be a breakdown in the laptop system. I will be very grateful to read suggested diagnosis and solutions from you guys.
    best regards
    defof

    Hi defof,
From the symptoms that you have described it looks like it might a problem with the adaptor as its neither getting warm neither is the indicator light glowing. It might also be a problem with a blown battery. I would suggest you to call HP as the unit is still in warranty and you can have faulty part replaced for free.
    Cheers
