Repair Windows 7 Backup

After installing and removing Acronis on a Windows 7 computer, Windows 7's Backup and Restore program is not working. Is there a way to repair only this part of Windows 7? Everything else in Windows 7 seems to be ok.
Thank you!

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
Do you mean that you cannot start Windows Backup and Restore in Windows 7? If so, please perform the following steps to check the result:
First, please check if Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services are running and set to automatic in Services Console.
1. Click on Start, type Services in Start Search. When the Services page is open, scroll the page to find Volume Shadow Copy and Backup service.
2. Right click on them and check if they are started.
3. If the services are disabled, start the services and set it to Automatic, then check if the issue disappear.
Second, please run sfc command to check if it can fix this issue:
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on
Windows 7
If the issue persists, I also would like to suggest you perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
Hope it helps.

  • Old computer died, I am trying to restore my pictures from a Windows Backup

My old computer overheated to the point that the D: drive, where I kept my data, virtually melted.  Fortunately, I am religious about backups, so I had a local computer shop install a new D: drive and restored most of my data from a backup on an external hard drive.  Unfortunately, that drive also failed - the local computer shop was able to get some data off of it, but none of my pictures.  I had a fairly recent backup that did include all my picture files (created with Windows Backup and Restore).
I was able to find the Catalog folder and restored it to the default location (C:/Program Data/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs).  The Organizer does find that catalog.  It contains 2 folders (BreezeData, which contains 422 files in the format breeze-1.xml and a file named BreezeSession.dat) and (syncdb, which contains only a file named .pref).  It also contains the following files:  backupCt.dat, catalog.pse9db, collstatus.dat, face.thumb.9.cache, itemData.mk4, tagstatus.dat, and thumb.5.cache.  However, none of my tags appear in the Organizer.  I have tried repairing the catalog, got the message that there was nothing to repair, and clicked on "repair it anyway", which didn't improve the situation.
Is there another file I need to find and restore to make this work properly?
I have restored some of my actual picture files to the same location and file structure they were in on the old computer.  However, PSE 9 can't find them.  I have tried "reconnecting" files, and get the message that there are no files to reconnect.  If I "import" the files to the Organizer, I lose all of my version sets (and I have a lot of them).  I realize I can stack the original and edited versions of the same picture, but the Editor does not recognize them as versions.  In addition, I lose all my tags.
Is there any way to get the pictures back into the Organizer without losing the version sets and tags?  The Organizer does find the captions i have assigned.
I have already purchased PSE 12, but I thought I would have greater success if I got PSE 9 properly restored, then did the upgrade.
    Any help would be appreciated.

This isn't really a reply, just an update.
I was finally able to fix the problem!  I uninstalled PSE 9 (I should have used Revo Uninstaller, but I forgot to do that, I just used the Control Panel, Programs & Features, Uninstall a Program.)  I then went into the ProgramData directory and removed everything that appeared to relate to Adobe PSE, including the Catalog folder (there was a lot of it).  I restarted the computer and re-installed PSE 9 (I had already recovered all the picture files using Backup and Restore).  This time, when I did Reconnect, All Missing Files, the program itself found almost everything!  I still had a little bit of cleanup to do (mostly duplicates), and I have to re-transfer all of the pictures I have taken with both of my cameras since the backup just before this disaster occurred, but at least I have (I think) recovered the majority of 7 years of photographs.  I noticed while I was doing the cleanup that not every filename (I just leave the IMG_#### assigned by the camera) was there, but I am assuming the missing filename numbers are photos that I either deleted or moved to a folder I call "Trash" for photos that are going to take a lot more time to fix than I have immediately - if they can be fixed at all.
The recovered photos retain the version sets and tags that were originally assigned!
Having been through this, I would encourage everyone to backup their files regularly, and don't forget the directory where the catalog file is stored!  If the catalog file is lost, you are toast!
If anyone has a similar problem, feel free to let me know and I will try to help with a more detailed explanation.
For what it's worth, Adobe was of no help (fortunately we got disconnected before I gave them my credit card number for the $39.99 they wanted to even talk to me about the problem).  Similarly, I have successfully used JustAnswer.com for other complicated problems where HP (the destroyed computer) or Dell (my new computer) couldn't help, but they were unable to help with this problem.
I think I have a little more work to do, including loading my recent pictures, but I plan to start on converting the recovered files to PSE 12 soon.

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

  • Windows 7: Windows Backup failed 0x81000031

Windows backup ran, and my once-pristine and empty backup drive now has something filling its space, so I assume some files were successfully backed up. Thing is, the Action Center icon has the red x on it and it comes up with one issue: Check, your backup (Important). Clicking this issue produces the following dialog:
    Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options
    Check your backup
Windows Backup failed while determining libraries location of one of the users included in the backup.
Details: BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore these files to your computer.
    Options:
    *Try to run backup again
    *Change backup settings
    Error code: 0x81000031
Thing is, I'm using home premium. I don't see bitlocker as an option and I'm not terribly enthused about having to repair bitlocker when I can't use it to begin with. (Primarily, because I use Windows 7 Home Premium. Even if I used a version which supported bit locker, I'd never use it to begin with - I lack a TPM chip which means that anybody who has physical access to my machine could compromise my security regardless of bitlocker, it'd just take slightly longer for them if bitlocker were present.)
I'm digressing, the point is I don't use bitlocker and I don't know how not having bitlocker prevents Windows 7 from copying files from one drive to another and making a note in a logfile that the files were backed up. I realize I simplify the method of backing files up but it doesn't get much more complex than copying them to a separate location and timestamping them.
tl;dr: Windows Backup produced error code 0x81000031 because bitlocker drive encryption cannot be used. I don't want to use bit locker drive encryption I just want to back my files up to an external drive. Suggestions? Preferably ones that don't make me run Windows Startup Repair.

Well 4 years later same problem simple fix, did every thing else as suggested by microsoft sys repair start up repair etc etc and just removing the drive that was included in library fixed the issue i have spent hours on
now have to reinstall all that sys restore removed...SO EVERYBODY do what Sneha said first..
    Clicked "Start", then "Computer".
Right clicked on the "Library" I wanted to modify, and selected "properties".
Immediately saw that my DVD drive was an included folder in the library.
Clicked on the drive in the list, and the Remove Button became active.
Clicked on "Remove" and it removed the drive from the list.
Clicked on "Incude Folder" and added in my real backup folder location (not required, I just want a libray connection to
    it).
Clicked on "Ok".   thanks ath1234 for the process..Cheers

  • How do I restore a Windows Backup Server backup recovery partition?

I'm trying to test restoring a backup from our real server on a temp server.
First, I was surprised it can't do a restore to a smaller drive because the original server is only 1/3 full (it wants to restore all the empty bytes too).
Also it appears it wants to see that target partitions are already created.
It wants to restore recovery to an EXISTING recovery partition and OS to an existing OS partition all with exact sizes.
What if the old system died and I had to go to something new?
Do I have to preinstall 2012 R2 on a bare drive so it creates the partitions?
I've been down this path before, if it's not byte for byte match (offsets and all) it won't boot.
I'm pretty sure I could restore just the OS partition and then do a Windows Repair which would move the master boot record onto the OS drive. But that seems wrong.
What's the proper way to restore?
Is Windows Backup Server to limiting?

    Hi,
    1. When trying to recover a partition, it requires a same or larger target partition. If you only backup data, there is no size limitation of the target partition.
    2. We need an operation system to do the recovery. However you can perform a Bare Metal Backup so it could be restored without operation system - but it may force to backup more than partition C.

  • R&R vs Windows Backup utility

While the  thinkvantage R&R won't use a USB flash drive for a backup device, windows backup utility will  (XP Pro).
Question is, what can R&R do that windows backup can't?    If my hard drive fails, can windows backup be used to install the OS, data, and settings to a new drive... the way that R&R can?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

R&R can encrypt your backups (so that if you lose a USB drive, nobody can browse your files without your password) and also compress them so they tend to be somewhat smaller. There is also more flexibility in the settings for R&R (for example, choosing selected large files for "single storage"). As far as restoring everything from windows backups, on Windows7 yes, system image created with the backup utility and a repair disk (created with the backup utility) can be used to restore the whole system+data. I am not sure about XP though; I no longer have access to XP, but my recollection is that the backup utility on XP lacks this functionality.

  • Windows Backup - The backup application coud not start due to an internal error: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform this task. (0x8100000010).

Windows 7 users in my domain are unable to configure or change backup settings.  Users are able to open Control Panel > Backup and Restore, but when they click
Change settings, they receive the error: Windows Backup - The backup application coud not start due to an internal error: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform this task. (0x8100000010).
The same error is received when executing sdclt.exe /configure at the command prompt, regardless of whether the command prompt is launched using "run as administrator".
I've done significant testing, and have been able to determine that the local administrator account is able to configure backups before the computer is joined to the domain.  Once the computer is joined to the domain, the local administrator account
and domain users who are in the local administrators group are no longer able to configure backup and restore.  Domain administrators are able to configure backups.
This is a new issue, which began occuring sometime in the last 2 months.  3 months ago, users were able to configure backups without issue, and those computers with backups configured are still able to run their backups and do restores; however the
settings can no longer be changed.
Clearly something in the domain is doing this, but Group Policy has not been altered, and I can find no setting that would be doing this in any case.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
So you mean you have tried different accounts in the local Administrator group and all of them failed?
If so, please check what group the local Administrator group belongs to? Does it belong to a group with limited privileges, such as the Guests group?

  • RDS 2012 R2 - How do I lockdown access to Local Computer Management and Windows Backup via Group Policy

    Greetings all,
I am needing assistance in how to lockdown access to Local Computer Management and Windows Backup via Group Policy for users that access RDS service. I have followed this awesome guide - h t t p://w w w.it.ltsoy.com/windows/lock-down-remote-desktop-services-server-2012/
      - but it is missing two important resources that I would like to lock down.Currently, I have successfully locked down Control Panel for users via Group Policy, but I cannot find any group policy or guide on how to restrict user access
to Computer Management (different to Server Manager). When using Win-X shortcut to open the 'Administrator's shortcuts' near the windows icon, I have locked down everything except Computer Management. Computer Management gives direct access to Disk Management,
Shares etc, which are locked down for users. But Windows Server Backup is still accessible. Can someone please guide me on how to restrict access to both Computer Management and Windows Server Backup.
    Thanks in advance.

i backed up my ipod during a windows backup.  how do i find those ipod files(not itunes) in the windows backup files? i've tried searching and i can't find

so i plugged in my ipod and it asked if i wanted to backup the files before restoring it.
Do you mean iTunes asked if you wanted to backup files before restoring? If so the it is in the location I posted. You don't need to navigate to the backup. Once your restore your iPod it will ask if you want to restore from a backup and present you with the backups made before hand.
To restore information from a backup, use one of the following methods after connecting your iOS device to the computer with which you normally sync:
-Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.
    Or
-Open the iOS device's Summary tab. There are two ways to access this:
-Click the device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper right corner. The device button will then be visible.)
-From any view in iTunes, click the View menu and select Show Sidebar. Select your iOS device in iTunes under Devices.
    -Click the Restore Backup button.

  • How can i copy my data files from a windows backup to mac mini

I recently purchased a mac mini and waiting on its arrival.  I am converting from WinXP and my current system is not working at the moment (started smelling smoke one day and the video hasn't displayed since from the PC - so its been shut down).  I can easily fix whatever the issue is with the PC - however - my question is.  I perform periodic backup of my data files to an external drive with Windows Backup, can I restore my files from the Windows Backup to the Mac Mini?  If I don't have to fix the PC - I can save that cost and buy an CD drive for the Mini (or something else).
I haven't investigated the real problem on the PC - I just know its hardware related (not OS).
My last backup was atleast 1 month ago - so I know I might lose a couple of things....but not very much.  If its "simplier" for the migration process to fix the PC - then that is the answer but if I can extract from the external 1TB Seagate.  I think I only have 50GB of data (itunes / pictures / etc)

    Hi,
I doubt this was External harddrive problem. Please check Event log about VSS error log. If there is any error message with VSS.
If so, please refer to the link below for more details about VSS error.

  • Windows Backup Error code 0x81000033

Just recently got myself a Microsoft Surface Pro (128 GB), enjoying it as a replacement to my laptop, but while carrying out some first time setup like I do on fresh installation of Windows, I bumped into an unusual situation; I can't perform a
full system image backup of my Surface Pro. The error occurred in the middle of a backup process and it stated the following:
    Check your backup
Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again.
Funny thing is, I'm backing up to a 1.5 TB external HDD; that is more than enough to hold 128 GB of data. Did some googling and found that it has something to do with the SOURCE partitions not being big enough to store some volume shadow
copy files during the backup. Any suggestions on the best way to fix this?

  • Exchange 2013 Window Backup failure - fails to clean up log files - error FFFFFFFC

    Hello,
We currently have an Exchange 2013 - Exchange 2007 coexistence setup.
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2007 CAS/HUB
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2007 MBX
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 CU 3 (all roles)
Since our current backup solution (Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3) does not support backing up Exchange 2013 CU3 databases, we are using the builtin Windows Backup feature to backup the Exchange 2013 CU3 databases.
This has functioned for a while, until all of a sudden, the log files are not cleared anymore, causing our log disk to fill up.
Our Exchange 2013 server looks like this:
    C: Windows + Exchange installation
    D: Databases
    E: Database Log Files
    F: Archive Databases
    G: Archive Database Log Files
    S: Dedicated backup volume
The backup is scheduled to run every day at 21:00 hours, performing a full VSS backup of D:,E:,F: and G: to the volume S:
Windows backup log says the backup completed with exceptions, leaving the Exchange logs untouched and filling the drive.
The Windows Backup Command Line tools are NOT installed since they are not compatible with Exchange 2013.
In the eventvwr we can see the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance a33ec440-7f12-4c50-806b-1bc5ceaf8aad) failed with error FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event.
The command VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS displays the following:
    Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
       Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
       Writer Instance Id: {cf84a907-76dc-428c-90e0-c18a3f9db493}
       State: [1] Stable
       Last error: Retryable error
Restarting the Microsoft Exchange Replication (MSExchangeRepl) clears the writer error, same with a reboot, however the error comes backup after the next backup.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks.

  • How do I retrieve bookmarks and passwords from a Windows backup, after OS re-install?I have a full Windows backup of my machine, pre re-installl

I had to reinstall Vista 7 OS. I have a full Windows backup of my machine, prior to the re-installation. How do I retrieve the bookmarks and passwords from the backup? I understand they're stored in various files a ".default" folder in C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles. When I try restoring the folder, the files get skipped... When I try browsing for the individual files, I don't see them!

Many thanks for your responses... After a little scouting on the web, I have found THE solution... This is all due to the way Windows 7 Backup works, and will NOT let restore apps...
("File restore in Windows7 is not designed to restore back applications. This is because the application state is spread across potentially multiple folders, files & registry. Windows7 file backup is not aware of where all the state is spread to be able to restore the entire application accurately as such information is internal to the application. Restoring application partially might corrupt the application and render the application unusable. So we do not allow restoring applications from file backup.
In case files under C:\Program Files etc. are chosen for restoring, we block restoring files from backup to such locations as it might cause the applications to not function.'')
What one has to do when restoring is to NOT attempt to restore to the original location, but to select the radio button which allows you to type a path where you want the files restored and type in the path of the original location!!! Then select copy and replace...A little quirky (and tedious), but it works!
