  • How do I repair Windows?

    Greetings,
My computer had a virus two weeks ago, and now Windows Firewall isn't working. Can I repair Windows without having to reinstall it? The manual says to insert the CD, reboot, and follow the onscreen instructions, which are:
Startup Repair: no software problems found
System Restore: 3 restore points created after infection
System Image Recovery: no images available
Windows Memory Diagnostic: no hardware problems found
    Command Prompt
Recovery Manager: this just runs Check Disk. No problems found.
How can I repair Windows? Option #6 (Recovery Manager) just has an option to run Check Disk.
    Thanks,
    Shane.

I ran the Fix-It utility, and it found that File Sharing and Remote Assistance were turned off, but I've actually turned these off myself, and no other problems were found.
System File Checker didn't find any "integrity violations".
I downloaded X17-58997.iso and created a Windows DVD. When I booted from the disk, I was very hopeful because the second option was "repair". When the repair option ran, though, it just presented me with the first five options you see above in my first post.
Am I really missing something here? I'm sure there was a repair option in previous versions of Windows. I just can't seem to find it in Windows 7.
    Thanks,

To back up your data, either use Target Disk Mode and a cable from another Mac (which mounts your problem Mac as an external disk of the other Mac) and Disk Utility on that other Mac, or — and this is all assuming you either have a slow Internet connection and don't want to use Internet Recovery, or if you have an older Mac that doesn't support Internet Recovery — you can create a bootable USB key disk on another Mac and then boot your problematic Mac from that keydisk, then use Disk Utility from the installer to make a backup to another (external) (scratch) disk.  You can also use that keydisk to reinstall OS X, to repair or to reinstall OS X.

  • Repair Windows 7 on a 2013 iMac with USB 3 issue

Hi. I have a corrupt Windows 7 parition  on my late 2013 iMac that Disk Utility can not seem to repair. My best guess is a the 'Repair Windows' from the install disc upon booting up will fix the issue. The problem is....my 2013 iMac only has USB 3 ports available and from what I am reading it appears Windows 7 does not support USB 3. Therefore....my external CD drive is not being seen, nor are my keyboard, mouse, or anything else via the USB 3 ports (I also tried a bootable flash drive with the neccesary Windows files on there). I even went as far as making a bootable SD Card and trying to repair from that, but I still can not utilize my mouse and keyboard to advance through the prompts.
I did not have these issues when I installed it using Bootcamp because I am guessing bootcamp supplies the neccesary means to allow the USB 3 ports to be recognized. But Bootcamp does not have a feature for repairing windows. It is only giving me the option to remove Windows.
Is there anyway I can repair windows using my Windows installation CD on an iMac by means of using USB 3 ports?
    Thanks in advance.

For attempting to repair a Windows 7 partition you need to be able to boot into Windows setup indeed. The complication is that Windows 7 installer has aged and does not support the relatively new USB 3 standard.
I can only this of one approach which is by downloading the available Windows ISO and use USB instead of your DVD. It is kind of a long shot and does have its risks, but I'll describe it high-level nonetheless:
    - Using Boot Camp create an USB with Windows 7 edition you run as well as the appropriate Windows Support Files from Apple
    - From OS X or the Mac's Recovery Console you could shrink your HFS+ partition for about 3 GB to create some free space
    - Insert an additional primary partition in this free space and format it FAT
    - Sync this GPT change to MBR manually using fdisk and reboot into OS X
    - Pre-copy the Windows PE driver folder onto this new FAT partition to overcome the USB 3 issue
    - Reboot in legacy bless'd mode to your USB recovery stick
The Windows setup screen should display an option to repair instead of install... Your mileage could vary depending on the type of corruption(!)

    Hotrodmkviii,
try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command.

I have a HP Pavilion 500-018 Desktop PC with windows 8.1.  For some reason, the CD-ROM drive has stopped working.  When I put a disk in to install new software, it does not recognize that there is a disk in the drive.  I've tried updating the driver, etc.  Even in the file explorer, the drive does not show up.  About the only thing I can do it eject the disk.

  • Can't boot Windows 7 without DVD in drive

Is there a hotfix for this?  It's related to this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/64f729b6-d796-4030-82d9-3fe5a44b0180
If you go to www.google.com and search using the phrase "Windows 7 won't boot without dvd" you'll see that others have this problem too.
I have 2 Raptor hard drives in a RAID-0 array.
I have a third internal 1.5 terabyte hard drive.
The 1.5 terabyte (C:\) HD is for my Win7 OS & my programs.
The RAID-0 array (D:\) is for my games. (RAID-0 is for fast loading performance)
I think it recognized one of the RAID-0 drives as the "first hard drive attached to my motherboard" and somehow Windows 7 put the boot loader info on that hard drive, instead of my 1.5 terabyte C: drive with Windows 7.  As a result, Windows 7 won't boot unless I have the DVD in the drive.
I tried the option to boot from the DVD, repair my computer, and from the command prompt do a "bootrec /rebuildbcd" but that failed.  So the only fix I see is to PHYSICALLY disconnect the 2 RAID-0 drives, and then do a full install of Windows 7 again.  What a royal pain-in-the-____.  My motherboard is an ASUS P6T.   Any hotfix in the works???

I finally fixed it.  When it first failed, all the research I found said to do the following (which didn't work):
    1) Boot from the Windows 7 DVD
    2) Click "Next"
    3) Click the "Repair your computer" link
    4) Choose the "Command Prompt" option in the SYSTEM RECOVERY OPTIONS menu
    5) Type: "Bootrec /rebuildbcd" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
That supposedly should have fixed the problem, but it never did.  After doing this, I always got the following error message
    (which seems like a success message) . . .
    Successfully scanned Windows installations.
    Total identified Windows installations: 0
    The operation completed successfully.
Now, it might have said, "the operation completed successfully", but it CLEARLY did NOT work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Identified Windows installations should be 1, not 0.
Then, I found an obscure message that had the answer.  It was on a message board, written in TINY little text.   Here's what I found:
If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
    Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    Bootrec /rebuildbcd
So I rebooted and did the following steps.  This is the exact ENTIRE process I did, in case anyone else needs to follow these steps . . .
    1) Boot from the Windows 7 DVD      (Yes, patience is a virtue!)
    2) Click "Next"
    3) Click the "Repair your computer" link
    4) Choose the "Command Prompt" option in the SYSTEM RECOVERY OPTIONS menu
    5) Type the following commands, exactly as written below, in the order in which they are presented, and press ENTER after each command:
    Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    Bootrec /rebuildbcd
Then close the command prompt box and re-boot your computer.  Make sure the boot order in your BIOS has the correct drive as your first boot device.  That sounds obvious, but computers give various devices very obscure names, and it's easy to choose the wrong number(device).
Hopefully this process works for others, like it worked for me.  I no longer need the Windows 7 DVD in the drive to boot into Windows.  Wow, that only took me a full 8 hours of trial and error and research to figure out and fix.  Microsoft is making such amazing advancements in technology!!!  </sarcasm off>
Thanks for the offer of help derosnec.  It's much appreciated!

  • 500 GB external USB hard drive USB 2 configuration problems

    Hello Sirs.
I recently adquired a 500 Gb external USB hard drive part number PX1269E-1G50.
I have some problems with the USB 2.0 configuration in windows XP. When i connect it to an usb 2.0 port i receive the message "High-speed USB hard disk drive plugged into a non-hi-speed usb hub", and the device stays in low USB (12 mbits/s) speed. (I checked the port with another usb 2.0 peripheral and the port is working in usb 2.0 mode correctly).
I checked the PXI1269E-1G50 in others pc and i have same results. I cant get it to work in USB 2.0 mode. I also have some problems with the virtual CD partition that is always present when you insert it and mount. Exist a way to remove it ?
I only use the hard disk for daily data back-up and i don't want to use any more drive letters in my system.
The main PC is an ASUS P4P800-E deluxe with windows XP SP2 fully updated and build in USB 2.0 intel controller.
    Best regards

    Hello again everybody
OK. Finally i had to send the disk to my dealer. Toshiba in Spain says there is not solution. Sorry. This is an erratic product. Sometimes with one cofiguration simply works and sometimes with a different configuration does not connect in USB 2.0 mode. I don't want such a product in my desktop... and the Virtual CDrom is impossible to turn off. (I'm not interested in security tools. I only want to make daily backups)
Thanks to everybody in the forum for your help.

    Hi Jay,
Be aware that "Freeze Header Rows" and "Freeze Header Columns" apply only to rows and columns that are Header rows or Header columns. You can have up to five Header rows, Five Header Columns (and five Footer rows) on a Numbers Table.
"Header rows" is a special designation. Besides being able to be frozen, Header and Footer rows are not included in formulas referencing whole columns, making it possible to place formulas such as =SUM(B) at the top (or bottom) of column B without causing a self-reference error, These designated rows are also not included in sorts of the rows in a table.

  • How can I install new windows on NB200-10z without a CD drive?

    Hi,
I have a mini laptop "Toshiba nb200-10z" and it doesnt startup anymore.
I would like to do a recovery, but it also doesnt work.
I know there is a shortcut like press the 0 button when the laptop is starting up.
With this shortcut you can start the recovery to reset the software.
But when I press the 0 button it gives me an error.
So I think the recovery drive/partition is lost.
How can I install new windows on this minilaptop without a CD drive?

I have found a much easier way to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash drive. Unlike other methods where you have to write complicated commands, this method can be completed even by those who have very little computer background.
The whole process takes only two steps, run UNetbootin, load the Windows 7 ISO file, and finally restart your computer.
Before you begin, you will require the following:
    USB Flash Drive (4GB minimum)
    Windows 7 ISO Image file
    UNetbootin
Note: If UNetbootin doesnt work, try out the Microsofts official tool called Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool.
Now insert the USB drive, run UNetbootin, and select Disk Image as ISO. Browse your local drive for Windows 7 ISO that you downloaded and click Open. Now Select Type as USB and choose the drive. Once done, it will look like a bit similar to the screenshot shown below.
Click OK and it will begin extracting all installation files to the USB drive. The whole process will take some time (10-15 minutes), so have patience.
Once the installation is complete, reboot your computer. Now while your system is starting up press the appropriate button (usually F1, F2, F12, ESC, Backspace, or Escape) to bring up Bios Boot Menu.
Change the startup order to boot USB by default, usually you will have to press F6 to move the selected USB device on top. Once done, save changes and restart the system.
