Repaired ext. HD. What to do with Lost Found folder?
Hi All,
OSX Mavericks, Macbook Pro 2010 + Western Digital MyBook External Harddrive
I recently deleted an empty partition from my external HD (WD Mybook, 1TB). I then wanted to resize the remaining partition (still containing data) so that it could use the full 1TB capacity. This process failed and, after googling the problem, I verified and repaired the volume (using Disk Utility).
Following verification the harddrive still contains all of my backups and some other folders but also contains a Lost+Found folder with 23061 items in it (each a dir_# folder containing files e.g. keyedobjects.nib. This feels bad!
I googled Lost+Found and understand that these are orphaned files. Feels really bad now.
What would you advise I do now? Is there, perhaps, a way of reuniting the orphaned files with their parents?
As I only verified/repaired the external HD, are these orphaned files all originating in the same HD or have they been amassed from my laptop's HD and perhaps indicate a more serious problem with the laptop itself?
I don't want to lose the files on this drive (this contains an archive of my PhD documentation, numerous projects I've been involved with, a/v documentation).
Thanks in advance for all of your time and help,
Nick
Ok, I've had a better look at OWC and you might well be right! Great prices if my conversions are correct.
Csound1, would you be willing to go beyond the call of duty and tell me whether this combination makes any sense (to my untrained eye this looks like a tasty deal, 3TB for approx $189/£112):

3.5 GB iNode in lost+found folder
I have a very large (3.5 GB) iNode2894708 file in a lost+found folder on my MacBook Air. Is this something that I can delete? Does this have something to do with Lion's internal re-install/recovery thing?
Thanks in advance!!!An inode file is a data structure found in many Unix file systems. Sometimes these files are useless, and other times they can be vital to your computer. You should never delete one without inspecting it first. If you really, really need space on your computer, you can move the inode file to a 2nd drive, reboot your computer, and if it doesn't restart, restore the file using a 2nd computer in Target-Disk Mode, but for now you should probably leave it as it is. A lot of times inode files that size in Mac actually are the Lion Installer image used to restore your computer, which can be deleted, but is not recommended to be deleted. To get more information on the inode file, open Terminal then type "file " then drag the inode file into terminal, and you should have a string looking similar to this but with a different path "file /lost+found/inode2894708"
That should give you some information on the file, and based on what type of file it is (such as an archive you can unarchive), you can know if it is safe to delete it. -
Where can I find my lost found folder?
My anti-virus software found a corrupt file in my lost found folder. I can't find this folder to save my life. My spotlight doesn't recognize any of the names I use(lost found and name of corrupt file) I even tried looking at all my files. Please help
Like nearly all anti-virus applications, Avast can cause havoc to your system - get rid of it.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

What's the "Lost+Found" folder?
I just discovered a folder under Macintosh HD called "lost+found". Never seen it before. It contains one empty folder with an 8-digit number as its name.
I'm curious to know
a) What it is ...
b) How'd it get there?
c) And is it safe to delete? That folder contains files which were in use during a system crash that didn't point to any item on the hard disk; they may contain lost work, and can be safely deleted if they don't.

What to do with extra itunes folder after transfer
I just tranferred my itunes library from my old pc to my new mac using my ipod as a hard drive. I followed the directions apple gives on it's website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173).
I already had a bit of music on my new computer so i had to consilidate this library and transfer it to the desktop like the website says. I also added this folder back to my library.
The problem is now what do i do with my itunes folder sitting on my desktop (the one with the songs that were already on my new computer)? The website does not say. I do not want to delete it because the songs in this folder are not in the itunes folder that is now in my music folder (the itunes folder i transferred over).
Thanks. The tunes that are on the desk top - will they play in iTunes without moving them OR do you get the (!)?
The thing to be aware of it that the iTunes Library and the iTunes Music Library.xml are what keeps track things for iTunes and other apps. These files by default are in HD>user>User Account>Music>iTunes. If they get moved then iTunes will create 2 new files and all you old info is gone.
If you are getting the you can try to put the tunes that are on the desktop back into the iTunes Music folder and see if iTunes will find them again.
If not, then you need to add those tunes that are on the desktop - but not in library. Once ALL the tunes are in one place then you should be able to delete the extras.
Don't delete the purchased tunes without having a backup of those tunes. iTMS is clear about the download policy. It is a one time download.

What's up with "lost" messages?
Yesterday I had a text convo with a friend. The last text was sent to me (from her) at 6:33. I went on Verizon today and my text usage grid shows she sent me two messages at 6:38 and one message at 7:30. I called her and she said she never sent any additional texts after the one at 6:33. She even sent screenshots showing she never sent anything additional. What could cause those to show up on my usage? Is it a signal that got stuck in the towers query?
Thank you for your question amm1988. Lets be sure to get your texts figured out for you. At times, messages can be put in a "que" depending on certain variables since all text are transferred to a system to make sure it gets relayed accordingly. One way to make sure you are getting all your texts is by using our VZW messages app http://vz.to/1kyP5JA This allows you to even send texts via your computer in case you are in a non service area. Thank you again for the details and for your patience.

What's wrong with my mix folder?
I created my own mix folder wiht many songs and many artist and my Zen Mozaic EZ 300 want allow me to play this folder, what I have to do? I wanna play my favourite songs.
ID3 tag won't help meAnd, occasionally it will boot into open firmware.
Seems odd to me. All by itself? Did you press any keys?
I don't know what to do from here. I can still boot into os 8.6 with extensions off.
Most likely, you have a bad extension. They are in a folder called extensions What you need to do is create a new folder and move extensions to this folder. Move extensions to the folder in groups. try 1/2 first. Move back & forth between folders. See which extension is causing the problem. command + n to create a new folder
verify that you have the correct firmware.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
Apple -> Apple System Profiler
2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
click on Hardware
read the Boot ROM Version
3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
The 4.1.9f1 will be different on a 333 machine.
What firmware do you need?

Please help-I was just informed I cant activate my CS software through Adobe?!!! What a pisser-I lost my desktop to a virus, I got a new one and refuse to ever go online with it. I put @Photoshop in, it wants an authorization code that Adobe says "CS is too old so please go to our forum for help"... So I am here Ladies and Gentlemen. I really need help on how to reactivate my software and without the use of the internet (last time I tried online, ended up doing over the phone which is no longer offered...) that cost me several hundred to begin with-I am upset @Adobe won't activate it-why? I don't know. But please, if someone out there knows what I can do to overcome this, I would be very grateful. Thank you for all help and taking the time to reply.
Peace, John Sheait's your lucky day. you can upgrade to ps cs2 free.

I predict something is going wrong because of the list history in verify permission disk. after I repair them for a few second , I do it again and also found that long list again..They are all about iTunes. So what's wrong with it. Thanks.
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:

When I upgraded to 10.7.4 I lost the ability to use a lot of my previous software that was intel based. My Adobe suites for example. So for $29 i now have to spend $1000's to get these to work. What has changed with Mountian Lion. I am not rich?
The reason your applications do not work in Lion/Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006. When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So you do not have to accept recriminations from others for previously using Rosetta without even knowing it was present and running!
So for those of use that need to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:
And now Mountain Lion:
If you are unable or unwilling to update your inventory of PowerPC software, this solution offers you an alternative for not more than the $29 cost of Snow Leopard and $79 cost of Parallels (cheaper via internet sources).
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions into Parallels 7 are here:

Assistance with the installation process is available on this linked forum. -
I used a Disc Warrior repair disc to rebuild by G4 Power Mac hard drive. It wouldn't
startup using the disc and the C key so I selected the Warrior as my startup disc, started up, repaired the disc and now I can't get the computer to startup on it's hard drive. It will only startup on the repair disc. What do I do to get back to normal?Press the Option key at startup and select the hard disk.
