Repairing an old grey scanned photo

Hello
I am using Photoshop CS8 (and also have Photoshop Elements) with Windows 7.
I am trying to repair an old image which is about 40-yrs-old (please see below). The original image that was scanned in was a lot more uniform grey, but I have managed to add a little more contrast.
However, much still needs to be done. I was going to attempt to remove the stain on the right using the clone tool, but my main concern is to replace the sky. This would add some clouds, a little contrast, and remove the scratch at the top of the photo.
However, when I try to remove this old, dull sky using Photoshop Elements's magic wand based on this tutorial
http://video.about.com/graphicssoft/Replace-a-Dull-Sky.htm
I find that the wand also removes the head and body of the duck due, no doubt, to the similarity of grey tones.
I think I have an idea as to how to replace this dull sky with a more interesting one, but I am not sure how to do so while keeping my duck. In fact, I would like to emphasise the presence of the duck more. Should I use a mask technique (I am not very good at masks, I am afraid) to mask the duck from the changes that a new sky will bring about?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thank you.
Steve

I am using Photoshop CS8
Are you sure? Photoshop is currently at CS6.
The orange stain could also be (partially) addressed with a Hue/Saturation Layer.

  • Create a photo collage canvas of 150 old scanned photos? Tips to increase efficiency?

    Hi there!
I'm been asked to make a 150cm/100cm big high res canvas out of 150+ old photos scanned to digital JPEG's. Is there a way to do that without spending the next two years of my life dedicated to that task? (Joking aside)
I have been handed 100 scanned jpeg's with 3-4 old photos on them (They put 3-4 old photos and placed upon a A4 sized paper and scanned in order to save time).
1: So I have to rotoscope (Is that the name for photos?) and make a new layer out of each photo. Or is there a simpler way?
2: Then I have place them correctly at the 150x100cm huge "canvas background".
3: Edit: Found the "Auto Select" tool (Long time since I worked with photoshop, no doubt about that...)
Some scanned photos are skewed. Is there a way to "Auto Rotate them when I press CTRL+J to make them separate layers?
Also, I managed to rotate my workspace when I zoomed in on my trackpad, is there a way to rotate back to 90°? (Don't see any degree numbers)
Any tips and tricks how to increase efficiency would be greatly appreciated!

    Photo Collage Toolkit
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this A video showing a 5 image collage PSD template  being populates with images:
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.

  • Only scanned photos are corrupted/gone

I've just discovered that most of the photos I've scanned into iPhoto have disappeared, although I still do see the lovely grey "corrupted" box where the pictures used to be. I've checked the Originals folder and the scanned photos are completely gone, not just corrupted. (I had noticed that the thumbnails for the most recently scanned photos starting about a month ago had a blank white line through them, but the line didn't appear when the photo is enlarged or printed.) All other non-scanned photos appear to be there.
    Questions:
    - Is this possibly a problem with the Lexmark printer/iPhoto? Photos used to scan well - no problems - until they disappeared. The ones that disappeared were 6 months - 2 years old.
    - Will rebuilding the iPhoto library help in this case? Is it possible that the photos are still hiding somewhere and will be picked up again, even though I can't see them in the Originals folder?
Coincidentally, the same thing just happened to my parent's computer (version 10.3.8; I'm 10.4.8) which is what sent me looking for my photos. Did something happen in the last software update to mess things up?

    Tiggle:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you at version 6.0.5 and, if so, did this start after upgrading to iPhoto 6.0.5? If so you may be experiencing the color profile problem, i.e no color profile or a damaged profile.
    So try the following:
1 - download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application from Toad's Cellar.
2 - locate one of the bad files in the iPhoto Library/Originals folder and drop onto the Automator workflow to embed the sRGB profile.
3 - check to see if that file is now viewable in iPhoto.
If that corrects the problem you can repeat the process for each file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Scan photo prints to iPhoto

I have a lot of photo prints taken on old-fashioned film, before the days of digital.
I have an HP Photosmart 5520 scanner/printer which has an option for Photo Preset. The default 'Resolution' setting is 200ppi. There are other options for 75,100,300,600,1200 or 2400 ppi.
My first question is, which 'Resolution' setting should I choose ?
The scanned size at 200 ppi for one print is 2.74MB. When sent to iPhoto its size is reduced to 1MB.
Another apparent anomaly is that although the prints are all 6 inches x 4 inches, their 'info' in iPhoto can vary from anything between 1184 x 791 to 2292 x 1498, and in size from 322 KB to 985 KB.
The digital photos I already have in iPhoto, nevertheless, are all 3888 x 2592 ; but the sizes vary eg from 3.4 MB to 6.1 MB.
File > 'Get Info' for the scanned photos says they are JPEG images and 'color space' is RGB, which I understand is the requisite . . . Can  the foregoing re scanned and digital photos be explained ?
    Thanks in anticipation

My first question is, which 'Resolution' setting should I choose ?
Depends entirely what you're going to be doing with the Photos. Jpeg is a lossy format, so as you edit each time you save some data is lost. If they require intensive editing, then the more data the better. Are you going to print them? Depending on your devices and the quality you hope to achieve, then perhaps the old 300 dpi for printing is a reasonable rule-of-thumb. If you're uploading them to the internet, say flickr or whatever, then 100 is fine. So, it depends on your proposed usage.
The scanned size at 200 ppi for one print is 2.74MB. When sent to iPhoto its size is reduced to 1MB
iPhoto doesn't reduce the size of anything on import. Where are you seeing these sizes mentioned?
Another apparent anomaly is that although the prints are all 6 inches x 4 inches, their 'info' in iPhoto can vary from anything between 1184 x 791 to 2292 x 1498, and in size from 322 KB to 985 KB.
No anomaly here. Your computer has no "inches" everything is measured in pixels. So the fact that an image is 6x4 in the real world is of no relevance. What matters is the pixel dimensions you choose to digitise (or scan) it. You can create a scan of you 6 x 4  that will be 600 x 400 pixels. (@100dpi) Or you can as easily create one the will be 14,400 x 9,600 (@2,400 dpi)... In other words, don't expect a direct correlation between what you hold in your hand and what you make on the screen. They're different worlds...
But again, iPhoto doesn't change anything on import, so I'd be looking at the scanner for explanations of these variations.
As to the file size, remember not all pixels are the same. An image that is pure white or pure black will have a smaller file size than one of a richly coloured sunset, and will also depend onn the resolution you scan at - so again, no direct correlation, it's a complex equation.

  • Split Apart Scanned Photos Automatically

There is a similar issue here: Break apart photos automatically, but I figured I might get better luck posting a new post than replying on one that is over 8 years old.
Anyways, I have an Epson Perfection 600 Flat Bed Scanner. The Epson scanner software allows you to scan in multiple individual photos at once. (I put like 6-8 photos on the glass, and it automatically separates them) I thought I could do the same thing with either Photoshop Elements (I have version 12) and/or Photoshop Organizer. I can scan using the Organizer software, but it only scans as one full image and does not separate them into individual images. I can then edit them using Photoshop Elements by clicking Image, then Divide Scanned Photos. It will do it, but I recall that I used to be able to do that whole function in the organizer software. I haven't used Photoshop for a while, so I actually cannot remember the exact steps I used to use. I thought used to automatically seperate them upon scanning them into the organizer software.
Is there some settings I need to change somewhere? Plug-in?
Please help! I have 10,000+ photos that I need to scan in quick and easy. Thanks!

I’m not sure how this would work in Organizer. As far as I know it has always been done in the Editor. Click the menu bar:
    Image >> Divide Scanned Photos
N.B. it is often not perfect and requires a good degree of separation to begin with, but from the Editor you can use the crop tool where necessary.

I'm having trouble importing scanned photos into pse8.  I'm using pse8 on a mac with ver 10.5.8 os.  The scanner is a lexmark s405.  This is the message I get:  "This file was created to be viewed on a television screen, but will appear compressed on your computer monitor.  It is recommended that you use a video monitor to priview and edit this image."  The photos do look normal on my screen, but the file sizes are huge, as in about 1 px per inch.  Can anyone point me in the right direction for a remedy?

    hi miss....
even though m a Nikon guy :>   Canon makes one of the best scanner components around.  they used to make alot of the scanner parts for other companies under the other company names.
remember though, that if u buy an all-in-one u might be waiting for repairs for different functions of the combos.  (scanners, printers, faxs, ect.)

    Hi @JaneCat,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you cannot scan photos from your HP Photosmart 5510 to a file on your Mac running Yosemite. I am sorry to hear this, but I am happy to help!
I would recommend downloading the full feature software and drivers from our website, HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers, as it is compatible with Mac OS X Yosemite.
If you are still having issues, I would also recommend this scanning guide, A 'No computer found' Message Displays during Scanning. Then follow the steps for the section that says it is for, Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X v10.7 Lion, OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion, or OS X v10.9 Mavericks. As these steps will still work on Mac OS X Yosemite.
I would also see this how to scan guide, Scanning with the Full Feature HP Software in OS X v10.10 Yosemite.
Hope this information is helpful, and thank you for posting!

  • Firmware Upgrade - OLD Text Messages/Photos Appearing BEFORE I Text

I recently went through the Thunderbolt Firmware Upgrade. All is well EXCEPT when I go to answer a text message. BEFORE I start typing, old messages and photos that I had sent to a totally different recipient months ago, are already entered into the response text box. I have to back out (back space) to get rid of text or I have to delete an arbitrary photo which was AUTOMAGICALLY inserted for me!
Not only does this waste my time, it can be very confusing! I could also inadvertently send private photos or private texts which were meant and sent to someone else MONTHS ago, to someone they were never intended for....!
Anyone else have their text messaging being hijacked by the operating system since the recent firmware upgrade??
Not sure who is responsible for the fix on this but, from what I see on this forum, I am lucky by comparison, to the other issues being experienced by those who updated their firmware (2/11/2013) when Verizon forced it onto us.
THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED! Does no one BETA TEST these upgrades before they are forced upon us?

        Hi Loonlady!
I understand your concern w/your messaging! I use messaging all the time and would not be happy either. I have some troubleshooting steps for you. Please give it a try and keep me posted:

  • Can't Import Scanned Photos

I have scanned about 100 snap shots from the original photo prints. All are saved in .JPG format. When I try to drag these photos to my iPhoto library, a message appears advising that the files are unreadable (may be unrecognized file type or may not contain valid data).
I'm puzzled. As I said, I saved them as jpeg files ...
    Thanks for any help.
    G5 iMac Rev B, 2Gb RAM, 400 Gb HD, iPod 20 Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I know it can be confusing working with a new operating system so don't be frustrated. iPhoto works a little differently than what you are used to. Photos must be imported into iPhoto in order for iPhoto to see them. That is why when you scan photos and save them in the iPhoto Library folder they do not show up in iPhoto. The photos must be scanned and saved to a folder OTHER than the iPhoto Library folder. Once saved, they then can be dragged into an open iPhoto Library viewing window (iPhoto is open and you are viewing your photos in the library window) to import, or use the menu command of File>add to library from the menu bar. Once imported/copied into iPhoto you can then delete the scanned photos from the folder you saved them too.
Now, I am wondering how you chose that folder path to save the scanned photos too? Did you navigate to the Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/roll110 folder and choose that folder to save them too?
Anyway, navigate back to that folder and drag the scanned photos to the desktop. Open iPhoto and import the photos on the desktop.
Since you are new to the Mac and iPhoto I have a little more info to help you out with iPhoto.
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database (the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder) and your hard drive ONLY after you empty iPhoto's trash. (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder. You can also drag a folder of photos into an empty space in the source column and a new roll and album will be created at the smae time for those images in the folder. The album will have the same name as the folder you dragged into the source column.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
--You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
--You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose
For iPhoto 5--"when double clicking on
photo" ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
For iPhoto 6 (from the Apple Help Menu)-Have you ever used PS as the external editor set up within iPhoto Prefs?
    From the iPhoto Help menu;
"Choosing what happens when you click the Edit button
When you want to edit a photo, you can have the photo open in iPhoto's edit view, in a separate window, in full-screen view, or in another application.
    To choose a preference:
    Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
Click General at the top of the Preferences window.
Under Edit Photo, select one of the following options:
"In main window" opens the photo in the main viewing area.
"In separate window" opens the photo in a separate window.
"Using full screen" opens the photo in full-screen view.
"In application" opens the photo in another application you choose.
To open a photo in its own window when "Main window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
To open a photo in edit view when "Separate window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
Note: Any video clip you imported into iPhoto will always open in QuickTime Player when you double-click it."
    And...
    "Editing photos in another application
You can do many editing tasks in iPhoto, such as rotating and cropping a photo, changing a color photo to black and white, adjusting exposure and contrast, and reducing red-eye. If you want to make other changes to a photo, you can open it in another image-editing application, such as Adobe Photoshop.
To edit photos in another application:
Set your preferences to open photos in another application when you double-click them or click the Edit button. (See Related Topics below.)
Double-click the photo to open it in the application.
Edit the photo and save it using the same name and file format.
The changes you made to the photo will be visible when you return to iPhoto.
IMPORTANT: When you double-click a RAW-format photo, iPhoto creates a copy of the photo in JPEG format, which opens in the other application. To edit the photo in its original RAW format, drag the photo from the iPhoto window to the Finder, and then use the other application to open it. (If you previously used iPhoto to edit the RAW photo, select the photo and choose Photos > Revert to Original before dragging it to the Finder. This way, you can edit the photo using its RAW data in the other application.) If you want to import the photo back into iPhoto, you must first save it as a JPEG or TIFF file."
--Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
--Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
-The one option you will not find within iPhoto is to resize photos. iPhoto wants you to keep all full size images within iPhoto to give you the best size for printing or using for other applications. You can however go to Share>export (for iPhoto 5) or File>export (for iPhoto 6) and choose the naming scheme, input the dimensions and export to the desktop to use for uploading to a web space or emailing.
--to email a photo set up your email client in iPhoto Preferences. Once done, just select a photo/photos and hit the email icon in the toolbar.
If you use a web based email, then you need to export the photo to the desktop and upload it from there.

I just downloaded PSE 9 and I'm trying to import three dvd's of scanned photos.  PSE 9  fails to import the 2nd and 3rd dvd's becasue the photo ID is the same on disc 2 and 3 (each photo is just sequentially numbers 1,2,3,etc.)  Can someone please tell me how to import the 2nd and 3rd dvd's.  They are read only and I can rename the files and really would not want to because there are over 400.  Please help, thanks!

You can also batch rename with Irfanview

Is it possible to create a movie on (DVD) from scan photos? And will it be compatible to play on a PC?

You can create an automatically advancing, with some fading and sliding effects, slideshow of your scanned Photos in the app "iPhoto" on a DVD on your iMac.
