Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
I'm running OS X 10.8 and Windows 7 x64 Pro.
After properly setting up Boot Camp to dual-boot Windows on my Mac mini, I decided to test whether or not it was true that creating another partition (a data partition for OS X) would interfere with Boot Camp. Wikipedia claims it does interfere but without citing a source, whilst the Boot Camp documentation itself only specifies that the disk must be a single partition _prior_ to setup - there's no mention of whether the disk must be _kept_ that way afterwards.
I opened Disk Utility, reduced the size of my OS X parition from 420GB to 80GB, and created a new partition in the unallocated space. Here's how it looks now:
When I attempted to proceed with the process, I did receive a warning that doing this (and I quote), "may" cause problems with Boot Camp. Seeing as it was inconclusive, I thought I'd give it a shot - nothing ventured…
Of course, it borked Boot Camp, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here. Whilst OS X boots just fine, the Boot Camp partition now no longer shows up in the Startup Manager, though it does in the Startup Disk prefPane. If I do attempt to boot into Boot Camp, I receive the following message on a black screen:
No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key
The advice given to someone who had this same problem was, "fix your damaged Boot Camp volume." But I'm at a loss as to how to do that.
So, anyone know how to proceed now so that I can keep my partitions as is, whilst fully restoring normal Boot Camp functionality?
Hi,
@Christopher Murphy:
Okay, you seem confident. Let's give this a shot. I use the command-line myself for the odd thing, so I'll try not to bail.

Lost Windows 7 boot option after creating new partition
First of all im new to Mac os.
i have installed windows 7 using boot camp and after it i tried to create a new partition from the main mac partition and it was created successfullly however now the windows 7 boot option is not available for some reason.
how can i have this option back? You broke it by adding the extra partition, remove Boot Camp (read the directions as to how) and start again. Do not add partitions next time.
Do not use Disk Utility to remove the Boot Camp Partition, use it to remove any extra partitions.
Backup your machine now. -
Can't boot windows after creating new MS-DOS (FAT) partition
I created a new MS-DOS (FAT) partition on Yosemite, and now I am unable to access my windows bootcamp partition.
- I can attempt to boot into windows from Yosemite however after a long while, I am prompted with "no bootable device".
- The option to boot windows from the startup manager is no longer visible. It still shows the bootcamp partition with windows.
EDIT: Creating the new FAT partition did seem to create another partition which is visible when looking at the partition layout; the other partition is 1.04gb; format "Free Space". Apparently that's from bootcamp - hadn't noticed before.
I took some screens to show what I mean ("WINDOWS EXT" is the new partition I created):

Repairing Boot Camp after deleting partition
Hello,
During the bootcamp installation by mistake I erased the macintosh HD partition, but before continuing the installation of windows I stopped the process.
Using a bootable live cd I saw that all the partitions are still there. I changed the boot options and managed to see the mac HD partition on the boot screen (when pressing alt).
After booting I could see all the information on mu mac and the present partitions information is like these:

I tried to re-run Boot Camp Assist again, but it gives me the following error:
The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
Can you help me to fix the problem?
AndreEverything was fine... Issue started when I tried to increasec the size of my bootcamp partition (from 100gb to 200gb).
I did the following:
1. I decreased my mac hd by 100gb using disk utility
2. Then I loaded bootcamp and used the "mini partition wizard" to increase the size of the partition by 100gb (unallocated space I free on mac hd)
3. I rebooted and everything went poof!!!!!! (Just for bootcamp)
Then, since bootcamp was not staring I found the solution you posted at the beginning:
· sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
p
setpid 4
07
flag 4
p
write
y
After this os x was still fine but windows was jus getting stuck at boot (black screen with blinking cursor)
Then I decided to do the following:
· sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
p
setpid 1
07
flag 1
p
write
y
After this everything brok! Mac HD disapeared and windows was showing "missing os" -
Repairing bootcamp after creating new partition
Like others who have posted here, I had two partitions, MacOS and Bootcamp that worked just fine. I then added a new partition because I need a "D" drive in Windows configuration to be able to install a particular set of programs that rely on such a configuration (long story and perhaps there was a better way). Once I added the new NTFS partition and rebooted, I no longer see the Windows drive as a a boot option. I don't know if the command line "sugo" utility and syntax that I've seen in postings here applies to all such situations but if anyone can guide me through it I would be very grateful. Thanks
No worries. Here you go. I'm glad you can interpret this stuff.

Lion Recovery disappeared after creating new partition
Hey there-
Today I created a new partition on my MacBook Pro hard drive in order to install a separate Snow Leopard partition on my machine... Prior to creating this partition, I had my regular Mac HD partition, Lion Recovery, and a BootCamp partition to choose from when booting up. After creating the new partition, I was able to install Snow Leopard on it without a hitch, but now when I reboot and hold the 'option' key to choose the boot source, only the Mac partition, Snow leopard partion, and BootCamp partition show up... Where did Recovery HD go? Is it still on my machine somewhere?
Thanks!Well like I said, I already have file redundancy with my two computers and if the whole thing dies, I'll just do it all over again... I'm not too worried about that. But yeah, probably a good idea to keep a copy of the installer. I did download it overnight but by then my problem was already resolved, haha. *puts it in safe keeping*
I really only cared for Recovery HD for two things: Find my Mac (it's needed to boot into Guest only mode) and to do file system repairs in Disk Utility if necessary.
When I get a bigger capacity hard drive one day, maybe I'll clone the whole setup but for now I really only wanted that partition back for the two things I mentioned above.
But again, I still insist that the method in the link is a much faster way, step 1 being almost unnecessary.
The 10.7.2 update even includes this exact process in the background to replace the old Recovery partition with its newer version. -
I have a Hitachi disk that I use for media (photos, videos, etc..)
After using Ipartition to create a new partition on this disk, none of the files are visible any more.
The disk was never partiton before so this was the first partition created.
When I launch iPartition again, I notice that I now have a Microsoft FAT or NTFS type partion and a HFS partiton however there is no data at all under Finder.
What should I do to recover my files ?you don't need 3rd party to shrink and create a 2nd partition.
One partition is still partition, and there are others like Lion Recovery, GUID, EFI on there.
Repair the drive and make sure iPartition does what you want and current. Or just use DU instead.
And backup. -
Recovery HD gone after creating new partition (to install Snow)
Hey all,
So I needed to reinstall Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro, so in Disk Utility I shrunk the main partition by about 20gb and then installed Snow Leopard on that partition, so now I can dual-boot Lion and Snow Leopard.
But now the Recovery HD partition is gone. Is this normal and any way to get it back?Well like I said, I already have file redundancy with my two computers and if the whole thing dies, I'll just do it all over again... I'm not too worried about that. But yeah, probably a good idea to keep a copy of the installer. BootCamp cannot create new partition on drive free space.
Hi Folks,
I am hoping for some advice here. I am running OS X (10.5.6) and wish to use Boot Camp to created a partition to install Windows XP SP2 for some gaming. My machine is a late 2007 MBP 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, 340GB WD transplanted hard drive.
I have about 180GB of free space for a new partition to be created for the XP install.
When I fire up the Boot Camp Assistant tool, I am immediately informed of the following:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition."
"Back up the disk and use the Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using the Boot Camp Assistant again."
+ I have never had more than one partition on this drive.
+ I installed the drive new with no partition and used a tool named 'Carbon Copy Cloner' to transfer data from the original drive onto this drive, the machine booted right away and I have been using it without issue ever since.
+ I have run Disk Utility to 'Verify Disk', 'Verify Disk Permissions' and 'Repair Disk Permissions' all ran with no problems and completed successfully.
My question is, how can I make a usable backup copy of the drive to restore back to the drive after performing the re-format?
Can I use the Carbon Copy Cloner software for this? I want to make sure that the resulting internal drive is bootable, etc.
I have been running Time Machine as well and have a disk full of backups from that app, but I have no idea how to use it to restore the drive to it's current state after re-partition and format.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
JohnSo today I used the free "trial" version of SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of my primary internal drive.
It was about 100GB and took a long time to copy onto USB 2.0 external SATA drive, but it worked.
SuperDuper provided the option to make the copy the boot device as well. After reboot, I used OS X Disk Utility to erase primary drive.
I then performed the operation in reverse, copying the entire contents back to the original location.
After a reboot, I ran the Boot Camp Utility and received the same aggravating message which I received before.
How can I be sure that I am actually re-formatting the target drive in order to consolidate free space? Is this my issue? When I performed the erase operation, I skipped the "zero out free space" step. Am I using the correct utility to prepare the target drive?
Once again, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Kaj_R.
If you change the volumes it is quite likely that the recovery partition will not function. I suggest you create a set of Recovery Media before messing with the partitions.
This document can help you create the recovery media.
Have a great day!

What kind software we should use under VISTA to creat new partition.
hi,there. i've use the boot camp to install the window vista in my macbook. but the boot camp only creat one partition for it. therefore all the partition i have under vista is C partiton. i want to divide that C partiton into 2 or more partitons, but i just wonder will that gonna destroy the boot information for Mac OS? what kind software i should use to avoid that problem? thanks.
Don't know. Never used it. You should probably post your question in the Boot Camp discussions

"Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR"
Hi Apple Ppl of the Wrld: I need help I been working on installing windows 8 on my Mac.
Spec of equipment:
Mac Book Pro Mid 2012
Bootcamp Version: Version 5.0.4 (473)
Bootable USB Flash Drive: Type Scan disk 4 GB windows 8 pro iso image but without the driver and the 2nd Scan disk USB flash drive with 32 GB with the Bootcamp Drivers downloaded and saved to this drive.
Please Note: I also have the original back up installation disc for Microsoft 8 Prof 64 from Microsoft where I purchased it from.
1st Bootcamp is not recognizing the Original Microsoft 8 Pro backup disk from microsoft itself.
Solution: I created the New Image from the Original Microsoft installed disc in my desk top and changed the extension to .ISO then burned the ISO image into the newly purchased DVD+R. Then I ran Bootcamp Once again and it get the following error message "The installer disc could not be found -- Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized. Solution
2: Created a bootable usb drive with bootcamp assistant successfully with bootcamp. Yes I close, ejected or un-mounted any image that was open or had been previously used then i restarted the Mac. Next, I start the bootcamp assistant tool once again then i get the same insert your windows installer disc message.
3: Then I try to resolve the installer disc not found issue: this are the steps i took: a). Lauch disc utilities
1. Selected the top most drive 750 GB Macintosh HDD
2. On the right you’ll see 5 tab buttons: First Aid | Erase | Partition | RAID | Restore.
3. Choose Partition. Then I clicked + to add another partition size of the partition was 222 GB
4. Change the Name of the Partition to BOOTCAMP
5. Change the Format to MS-DOS (FAT)
6. Click Apply to save the changes and then reboot your Mac and we’ll begin Windows installation.
7. During reboot, press and hold the alt/Option key and you’ll be presented with drives to boot from.
8. Use the arrow keys and return button to select the Windows yellow USB key drive containing your Windows 8 installation files.
9. This will begin the Windows install. --> then i get the following message: "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR".
4: Take the Mac to best buy and let them resolve the issue and charge me like a million dollars for it :'( since i have no other idea who to get this bootcamp working at all. This has been a terribly lengthy issue and it is not as simple as it is claimed to be since i started with the Original Windows Disc Purchased from Microsoft and I have the Optical disc drive which it should be simpler from what I understand.
Please can you help It would be of great help.
<Email Edited by Host>from what i understand you are trying to install win 8 pro from a "backup disk" the one that you purchased from microsoft.
this will not work, it is not an installer disk.
you need to start the process again. erase the partition you made on your hdd. in disc utility click the minus button after selecting the bootcamp partition, then manually drag the divider down fully then apply.
next, erase your usb then format it.
download win 8 iso from here;
http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/download-windows-8-pro/
it is perfectly legal to use your purchased product key in this install.
in bootcamp select the iso image you just downloaded, select your preferred partition size, check all 3 options.
you have the support software on another usb but you wont need it so it can be discarded. the install will work far better with the iso and support on the same drive. -
Hello, has anyone had experience with dealing with this speciifc problem?
In short, upon rebooting, I am getting a black screen with a line of text that says, "Booting from Boot Camp Assistant created USB Drive...Failed to load BOOTMGR." Nothing happens after that.
I am using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I have an ISO of Windows 7 Prof. along with an 8GB usb drive. I changed the coding in my bootcamp program to allow for the normally first invisible option that allows creation of a USB Installation program using an ISO that is normally only for computers without an optical drive.
I have that box checked, the check for new software box, and the install windows box checked. I went through the process of creating the USB, downloading the software, and partitioning the drive. Then on restart, I get the failed to load bootmgr error.
Some people have suggested using two usb drives for this. I am trying that method but it does not seem to help thus far.
Can anyone offer any help?

How to install boot camp on a pre-partitioned HD ?
Hi,
I have just done a clean install of my mac. Before installation i used disk utility to create a few partitions, one of them made available for Boot Camp.
Now when i start the Boot Camp Assistant it tells me:
"The startup disk can not be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single mac os extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing windows"
What the h.... do i really have to start over AGAIN?!
I need 3 mac partitions and 1 windows, if i re-install, then use boot camp assistant to create a windows partition i'll be left with just 2 partitions.....
Any help is very welcome at this point.
JayYou don't need to run Boot Camp Assistant since you've already partitioned the drive. Just boot to your Windows disc and follow the installer set up. All Boot Camp Assistant does is partition the drive for you.
However, I'm pretty certain with that many partitions, depending on the order in which you've placed them, you will run into some errors trying to install Windows on the Windows partition you've created. I believe the Windows installer doesn't like to install on anything higher than partition 4. If your Windows partition is #3, and your Mac OS partition is #2, you may still encounter an error, but this has a far easier workaround than having the Windows partition be higher than partition #4.
Let me know how you've set it up. -
Boot Camp Is Unable to Partition My Drive
Hello,
The first time around I managed to set up Boot Camp and Windows 7 Home Basic very successfully and effortlessly on my MBP mid-2012.
Then I found out I could not get activation key for it because Microsoft no longer sold the Basic version. I downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium version and bought an activation key from Microsoft and am now trying to get it on my computer.
Using Boot Camp Assistant I was able to delete the partition on which old Windows resided. Then using Boot Camp Assistant I built a USB drive that included the new ISO for the Windows 7 Home Premium edition and then the process went well and all necessary support files were downloaded.
We got to the point where I selected the size of the partition and Boot Camp Assistant tried to partition it except that it is not able to. It doesn't giver any reason, it just says: "Your disc could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning the disk."
Anyone here knows what could be the cause of the problem and possibly how I can resolve it?
By the way, I have checked and the base format of the drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and the disk has only one partition.
Thanks much.
FarzadI am doing a TM backup now. I looked at the iDefrag and the drive definitely needs defragmenting, according to the software, but I thought with Macs we don't need to worry about those things. I want to do one other thing I read somewhere else as a remedy for this inability to partition the drive before taking the leap and doing the full erase and reinstall.
Here is the link on the internet: http://crounji.wordpress.com/2014/01/28/a-solution-to-your-disk-could-not-be-par titioned-error-on-boot-camp-assistant/.
And I believe another forum has discussed this topic.
Here is another approach I want to try: Boot Camp: Partition alert message when using Boot Camp Assistant
