Repairing DV Media

Anyone out there able to tell me how to repair pinched mini dv tape?
Am trying to save what I can of memorable trip and tape is hung up about
15 minutes in.

I just did this last night. It wasn't fun.
Looking down on the tape, with the business end facing away from you, on the right hand side (on sony tapes anyway) there is a little lever that if you pull it toward you will allow the cover that protects the tape to slide up. Do this and then examine what the problem is.
If the tape is wrinkled, but not jammed on either side, that is good news.
In that case, turn the tape up side down. Between the rollers there should be a hole near the label. If you put the tip of a scissors or a screw driver in there it will allow you to turn the reels. Crank the wrinkle onto the feeder side. Get it on there a fair bit, as the tape is pulled out as it threads and you don't want that wrinkle near your heads.
Put in into the deck and note the time code.
Rewind.
Dub to something else immediately.
Stop the dub when you reach the afore mentioned time code.
Eject the tape and hand wind it past the wrinkle.
Dub the tape from that point onward.
If you run the wrinkle over your machine's heads it won't be good for anyone.
Going back a few steps – if the tape is snagged in the plastic – your job is a bit tougher. This took me twenty five minutes last night, but I'm a butter fingers, and I was scared to death of losing the material on the tape.
Gentlly pop the protection piece from the front. Try to save the little sping on the lever side. This step might not be strictly neccessary, but it was for me.
Use a small flat head screw driver to gently leverage the plastic apart, then carefully guide the tape back onto the guide. Use a vise to keep the cassette still, and tweezers to pull on the tape.
Pray.
If you are successful, it is harder to get the protective cover back on than it is to get it off. I had to use the screw driver again to pry the plastic apart to reinsert the tabs. I had no success with the spring. I didn't have enough hands. This is not needed for playback, and once my dub was done, I marked the tape for what it was (NFG) and put it on the shelf so it would still be there in case some other unlikely disaster struck and I needed to dub it again. I look forward to throwing it away.
Good luck.

  • Media card repair failed

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Anyway I bought my Curve 9360 in January from the o2 store. Last month a message popped up on my screen saying 'a media card has been inserted that contains errors. Do you wish to repair the Media Card now' I clicked yes. After that I got another message saying 'If lost clusters are found during the repair, do you want to save them?' again I pressed yes. The problem was successfully repaired. Today the same thing happened except this time it said 'Media card repair failed'. I searched how to repair it but I don't seem to understand how to do it.
Could somebody explain to me, in easy words that I will understand.
    Thank you

There is a good chance the media card is going bad.  Highly recommend you get a replacement.

  • Do 2nd Harddrives have Verifiable/Repairable Permissions?

    Hello all,
When running Disk Utility, I cannot choose to verify/repair permissions on my 2nd, non-OS harddrive, even after verifying the disk. The HD is an internal SATA drive, just like the OS disk. I thought (still think?) this was normal, but then someone mentioned verifying permissions on an Ipod. If you can verify permissions on an iPod, I should be able to verify/repair my Media HD.
What do you think? Is there some steps I should take (short of reformatting) my 2nd HD to make it verifiable? If you cannot repair permission on a non-OS disk, what is the point of having the option to repair permissions in Disk Utility on the OS disk (as you are supposed to repair permissions from the OS installer DVD).
    Thanks!
    CMF

    Hi CMF,
    Yes, Maxplanar is correct.
*"someone mentioned verifying permissions on an iPod"*
~ either mistakenly, or it was an iPod with the "Disk Use" option enabled and a Mac OS X backup installed on it.
*"If you cannot repair permission on a non-OS disk, what is the point of having the option to repair permissions in Disk Utility on the OS disk (as you are supposed to repair permissions from the OS installer DVD)?"*
Permissions Repair are another matter, that you are mistaking with Disk Repair.
~ Permissions Repair can be done when booted from the same boot volume, because it is only about comparing default system files with (hopefully not) modified or corrupted ones.
~ Disk Repair has to be done while booted from another volume, because it's about taking care of the entire volume structure in many ways that involve not only the simple system file level.
_iPod or external HD dedicated for storage only:_
Now if it's about Disk Repair, yes you can do it, and it's a good idea to do it.
    Nothing to do with Permissions.

  • Windows Media Center Has Stopped Working...

Since I first bought my Toshiba Satellite P305-S89151, I've received "Media Center has stopped working...A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" responses.  When I click on the Close Program dialogue box, I'm provided with an MS KB (KB 947464) article pop-up that is suppose to help me resolve the problem. IT DOESN'T!!! When I click-thru on the KB link, the MS Support site says they can't find their own KB page!  Does anyone know how to repair this Media Center problem on Vista Home Premium (64bit)?
    Thank you!

  • Media Manager doesn't work

    I have a Blackberry 8330 (CDMA) v4.50.191 (Plaform 3.4.0.62).
The Blackberry desktop manager is v4.5
    The Media Manager doesn't work.
when I click on the icon for it, the window gets a grayish tint -- like it's going to do something -- but then it returns to normal and nothing happens.
I am trying to download photos I took with my Blackberry camera to my computer.
Can anyone tell me some recommendations on how to download them and/or repair the Media Manager?
    Thanks,
    Sharlene

    Hello,
My advice, skip the Media Manager and instead use Mass Storage Mode:
KB11879 What is mass storage mode
With that, you can work with your BB memory area(s) as USB drives on your computer, and use your normal computer interface to do so.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot copy files to/from external drive

    Hi All,
Bit of a cry for help.  I run an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.7.3 and I'm having some serious problems with an external drive.  Some history first - I have a large iTunes library (~3Tb) of everytype of media which I stored on an external NAS (iomega StorCenter) with no problems - then this NAS started to report a drive error with imminent failure.  I purchased a new DAS (Western Digital) drive and moved all my content from the NAS to the DAS and everything was ok.  Then I started to get errors through iTunes about cannot find the file and cannot read the files - and then I couldn't access anything on the drive.  At this time I thought this was a different problem because I was running preview Mountain Lion, or there was an actual fault with the disk.  After investigation, and coughing out for Data Rescue 3 I found that somehow the entire file structure had been corrupted and all my files had been orphaned.  So at this point I had one dying NAS drive and one DAS which wasn't usable and no space to recover any files to.
So - next step was to purchase another external drive (and returned the WD) - this time I went for a G-Raid 4Tb (non-thunderbolt) drive and I've been in the process of recovering files from backups and iTunes.  I've had no problems until today when yet again I've started getting errors and now I have problems copying files to/from this G-Raid drive.
      Technical details - OS-X 10.7.3 - G-Raid 4Tb formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - currently showing 1,163 folders and 15,452 files.
Symptoms - using finder drag and drop copy a file from the g-Raid to desktop results in 'The operation can't be completed because the item 'xxx' is in use. - 'The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (error code -43).' and the copy fails.
Using the cp command I get a 'Resource Busy' error.
However, this is not for all files - I've managed to copy all my books back to the desktop ok, when a couple came up with the above error I tried again and it copied successfully.
I have run Disk Utility - here are the details :-

and it's just got worse - in getting the info for this post I no longer have access to the drive.

I'm now out of ideas and when I got in touch with G-Tech support I got "Unfortunately the drive seems to have been corrupted. You can try to retrieve the data using third party data recovery software such as Data Rescue 3. You can find the software at a discounted rate at the following page:http://www.thedatarescuecenter.com/gtech-data-recovery-software.html  If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask."
any help/advice/pointers very much appreciated as I really don't want to have to start recovering again :-(
    Thanks all.

    Hi Ncat,
I might have had similar problems with yours. Finder stuck at 'Not Responding' while I boot my Macbook Pro with external HDD plugged in, my macbook heats up considerably maybe because it keeps trying to access the external disk. And Finder can only proceed after I unplugged my external hard disk.
    So what I did was:
I rebooted my macbook into recovery mode (by holding cmd+R before / during the booting chime
I used the Disk Utility from there (instead of from normal booting)
Then I proceed to with 'Repair Permissions' and 'Repair Disk' for each and every partition of the external harddisk, and also my internal hard disk.
Rebooted after everything's done, and now it seems to work.
I hope that it will work for you

  • HELP! Nothing is working properly on my torch!

    Hi
Hi hopefully someone can give me some advice or help, as I don't know what else to do!  Where shall I start, I've had my BB Torch for 12 months but it started having problems after just 3.
Firstly it will not recognise my password anymore, it was fine then one day would not verify!  Therefore I cannot acceas my account to add/delete email accounts or download any apps.
The phone is so slow & freezes constantly, then today all my photos/videos have vanished, apparently the media card is broken, my BB then says do I want to repair the media card obviously I say yes but it doesn't work.  All my memories gone & I cannot find any way to get them back, I could cry.  I spoke to the phone shop where I bought the phone, the first time as I said 3 months after I bought the phone on a 24 month contract.  I have spoken to them on numerous occasions & All they have said is that I will have to pay an excess to  send the phone away for repair even though i pay monthly for insurance & they stated themselves that it is obviously a problem with the phone & nothing I have done to it.  I am just so upset as they have already told me if I send it away they will wipe everything & the only way I can save it would be to blackberry sync but I can't do this as i need to access my account and of course the password won't verify!
I wish I could find a way out of my contract but they say it will cost me £300 plus to buy myself out of it, basically I'm tied in to a contact for another 12 months with a phone that doesn't work.
HELP any advice at all is appreciated!

  • Aperture 3 and iPad 1

I am using Aperture 3 on Lion and an iPad 1 connected via the latest version of iTunes.
The issue I am having is that individual photos out of my projects will not sync onto my iPad.
I have generated previews of different sizes, I have repaired the media library, yet none of it works. 99% of the time it is the title photo of the project, that is missing and instead the first photo in the project shows as title photo in the iPad. There are also other images missing. It seems to be completely random which it will exclude but that are persistantly the same ones.
Any and all help would be highly appreciated!

    Here is my work around:
In Aperture, I created a smart album that picks up video clips only from my camera (iPhone video seems to transfer fine).  I then export masters of my video to my desktop. Using QuickTime, I share my clips with iTunes.  Then all my clips are accessable on my iTunes, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. It's time consuming, but works.

  • FCPX 10.0.9 is slow

Just updated to 10.0.9 and my edit is now interrupted continuously by the 'spinning wait cursor' the rainbow ball
Even (I just did this) opening the about this version window creates a lengthy pause - closing it creates another lengthy pause followed by FCPX (not responding) error
Moving the playback cursor on the timeline takes forever - playback otherwise seems fine
    This version seems unusable
My system is otherwise unchanged from previous FCPX version when everything ran well
    Mac Pro 10.8.4 3.2Ghz Quad core 24GB DDR3
FCPX 10.0.9 Transcoding create optimised and proxy media both ticked
    External HD for edit material
    Any thoughts?

Sometimes the error message will indicate a frame number.
If not, take a look at Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenace Tools. It can do a lot of things including identifying  and repairing problem media files. They offer a short trial.
Often the problem is a render file which is why you see the advice to clear out the render files and turn off BG rendering.

  • USB transfer modes

Could any one tell me about the USB transfer modes in X5-01. When I am in PC suite mode, is it safe to copy and paste files to my memory card?. I asked this because one of the songs I copied to my SD card stopped playing at a particular point and then I restarted the phone and now that song is playing completely fine. For some troubleshooting purpose  I formatted my mem card and  *#7370* my phone for a total reset and started copying all the music files again to SD card in PC suite mode. I disconnected phone from PC and opened the gallery. The gallery is now starting for the first time and displayed a message "Repairing corrupt media Library" and it added all the files. Why the media files are corrupted. Is that because I pasted the songs directly to the mem card in PC suite mode other than the Mass Storage mode?. What is the significance of Mass Storage mode.

If I was putting music on a memory card , I'd incert card in PC load up all the music an simply replace in phone ! May hep reading these also !

  • Error quicktime -50 and 0

Hello, when i export my work i have always the same error quicktime -50 or error quicktime 0, do you have any solutions ??
I cut my project : same error
    i'm lost !
    Many thanks for any help

    From Crash Analyzer:
    -50 (QuickTime)
This error occurs when there is corrupt or invalid media in your timeline. Check that the codec used by the file is recommended for use in your editing application.
    Suggested Actions
For best results, convert all long-GOP media to ProRes.
Make sure all images are RGB, not CMYK.
Ideally ensure all images are less than 4000 pixels in width and height.
Use Corrupt Clip Finder to locate the corrupt clip.
After the corrupt file is located, use QT Repair or Media Salvage to fix it.
Make sure your files do not have Digital Rights Management (DRM) that prevent them being played outside of their intended application. Some files purchased from the iTunes Store will have DRM.
Make sure you are using AIFF or WAV audio files.

  • Anyone Seen This? Warning Icon Preventing Export

Just went to export my timeline and I keep getting this "Quicktime Error -50". I went back and looked at the project and I guess at some point yesterday this little warning icon appeared in the Event Library, check out this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/cmvcjqsN0O9K

  • Exporting in FCPX using quicktime compressor I get this error.

what is this error I am going to show you guys a screen capture.
I am using the share/export using compressor settings.

This error generally means that there's something on your timeline that FCPX doesn't like such as a corrupt clip, unusual codec, a DRM-protected audio track, CMYK image, etc.
