Repairing external drive when improperly dismounted

not sure if anything can be done. i screwed up- i unplugged the drive while the computer was restarting, to plug it into a more secure power source (through battery backup). anyhow, i know i should have unmounted it first and i was stupid- it was a heat of the moment while crawling around under my desk kinda thing. when i rebooted my comp, disk utility keeps telling me that
"Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
1 volume checked
0 HFS volumes verified
1 volume failed verification"
it won't repair the disk- gives me a similar message. tried running cocktial, but the disk isn't showing up to do anything with.
is there any program that will enable me to save some of the data on this extrenal? it's a 500 gb firewire lacie drive. i was thinking of reformatting it anyhow, because it was stuttering some while i was working on a file on it, but wanted to get the stuff off first. fortunately, i have only had it for about a week (it's about a yr old, and worked fine for the person i boughtit from), and don't have anything except a small amount of stuff that isn't somewhere else on it. but, it's stuff i really didn't want to lose.
so, is my only option going to be reformatting, or is there some software that will force it to mount long enough for me to get the data off?
banging head on wall, vowing to be better about backing up....
thanks for any help!

wanted to let you know that disk repair was able to see the files, but couldn't rebuild the disk. data rescue II (which was recommended by the lacie site) was able to pull the files off. it took 3+ days to run the thorough scan before i could do that, though!! so i got my files, and reformatted the disk. copying a bunch of stuff to backup to it, and will really test it out before i trust it completely again. thanks for your help!

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folder within the artist folder.

How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Ntfs Event 153 causing an external drive to be dismounted on WIndows 8 system?

I am running Carbonite's Mirror Image on my Windows 8 system, using an external USB-connected hard drive as the target disk.  Carbonite formats the target drive before using it for mirror images.  The snapshot process works fine, but it appears
that after the snapshot is complete, Windows is doing something that causes the system to dismount the drive.  I assume it is the new automatic disk maintenance service that comes with Windows 8.  The Carbonite function was fine under Windows 7,
but when I upgraded to Windows 8 this problem began.
The System log details a series of events whereby a first check of Drive O/Disk 1 (the mirror image drive) is declared healthy: Event 98 ("Volume O: (\Device\HarddiskVolume16) is healthy.  No action is needed.").  But
then a series of Event 153 Warnings show up ("The IO operation at logical block address 1887dd98 [and others] for Disk 1 was retried."), followed by an Event 140 ("The system failed to flush
data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: O:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume13.(A device which does not exist was specified.)")
Oddly, this sequence repeats, including the Event 98 that Drive O is healthy!
Externally, the drive is definitely dismounted from the system as reported by the Carbonite InfoCenter.  Once I unplug the USB cable and then reconnect it, the mirror image resumes.
Is there any way to exclude a drive from the Ntfs maintenance?  (I've already excluded it from the disk optimization process.)
Additional info:  I am running System Mechanic and I have been told that SM can mess up VSS performance in other apps and that even when SM is uninstalled, the problems remain until/unless the OS is refreshed/reinstalled.  Any truth to this?

  • Unable to repair External Drive disk permissions

I have an external harddrive which holds my itunes library. Today I have been getting permission errors and now my itunes won't access the files on the drive.
I have tried to fix the errors with disk utility but now when I try to repair it I get the error: Could not unmount the disk.
Now I can't even see the iTunes folder on the external drive (I can see others) but I know it is there as 150GB of data is unaccounted for.

I had the same problem with my Time Machine backup disk and was able to solve it without the serious computer calisthenics recommended by others on the web. I'm running Snow Leopard on an intel iMac and using an external Seagate drive. Here's how I got it fixed.
    1. Unmounted the drive and unplugged it.
    2. Plugged it back in after a decent interval to let the disk spin down.
    3. Shut down the iMac and restarted it a few minutes later (hard reset).
    4. THE DISK DID NOT SHOW UP IN FINDER. Because I had a lot of work to do, I postponed further systems programming.
    5. After about 20 minutes, my Norton utilities found it and began to search it. It was back in finder with r/w permissions for me and everybody else.
    Hope this helps.

  • Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out   can't be selected. What went wrong?

    Must have done something wrong..
    1.  formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine.  Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
    2.  moved iPhoto library to new external disk
    3.  Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
    4.  Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected.  Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto.  A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry?  Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Then try select it again.

  • I think I messed up by not installing Lion on an external drive when my install didn't work

I purchased Lion but was unable to install (just read other threads on Lion installation problems!). I was unable to repair my drive so after many days of putsing around I erased hard drive so I could repair it and then I reset my pram. All is well with my Imac and everything is running smoothly. Problem is that I was never able to install Lion (didn't think about usb drive), so can I get Lion from Itunes, or was that a wasted purchase since my drive was erased?

I don't think you understand.  When I was unable to install I went to disk utility and try to repair my disk, that was unsuccessful and all other measures were as well.  I had already purchased Lion.  I did not save it to anything or copy it. I ended up having to erase my hard drive though and now I obviously don't have the prompt to install. When I go to the app store it is saying I have to purchase Lion again.  I am asking if I do have to or is there a way that I didn't just throw away $19.99

  • How do you boot from an external drive when internal drive is dead?

The internal drive is dead, but I have a complete dupolicate on my fire-wire external drive. I think I remember reading that there is a combination of keys to press down when starting to allow one to choose which drive to use as a startup volume. As it is, the thing won't start up at all.
So I know it's supposed to run from the external drive, but how do you get it to boot from it without having designated it as the startup when it was last running?

Hold down the Option key when booting the computer.
When I asked the question I was working on my daughter's ibook.
Now I'm back home and I have a firewall external drive, so I tried pressing option when I started and icons for startup drive come up BUT there is only one icon -- that being for my internal drive. I know that the external drive, which has a duplicate of the internal, is capable of starting it up ok, because when I go ahead and , after starting it up on the internal drive, then pick the external drive to start and then restart it, it goes to the external drive ok. But again, if it has been preferrenced to start on the internal drive and I do the thing by pressing with option when I start, it doesn't give me the option to use the external drive. (The external drive is partioned, and the duplicate startup is in one of the volumes, but I don't think this should have anything to do with anything, since it can start up using the appropriate external hard drive volume when I have selected it in my preferences.)

  • Deleting photos from external drive when referenced (not copied) to iPhoto

Hi, I've seen similar posts, but none of them really answers my question.
I have an external NAS drive with RAID, where I keep ALL my data, because I use number of ways to access them. I also have my photos there. I recently bouht MAC MINI and I want to use it to organise my photos. Because I have only 80G drive on MAC, I choose to import the photos from the external drive to iPhoto, NOT copying them to it's own library but rather referencing them only.
Now the question I have - When I delete a photo in iPhoto by putting it to Trash and then empty the trash, the file still stays on the external drive, although it disapperas from iPhoto library. This is uselesss to me, because I WANT the file to be deleted from the external drive (orginizaing the files, right?).
The only way I found I can do this is clicking on the file in iPhoto, selecting "find file on disk" then deleting the file from disk, then deleting from iPhoto, one by one. That is no way to do it, I would rather use Picasa instead, although I like iPhoto more, I think it is superior in almost everything else.
One more question: is there a way to see a list of directories imported to iPhoto?
    thanks,
    J.

    J.
What I need is to delete the file when I "look" at it,
Use a File Organiser. That’s what they are for, organising files. Other than that, if you’re using a database application such as iPhoto then you have to use the application to manipulate the data.
    You ask a question:
But I am still wondering why isn't there any setup option to actually allow iPhoto to delete referenced files.
    and the answer
I know it may cause some problems for some user,
iPhoto is firmly focussed on the home user with a point and shoot camera. It’s very effective at what to does, but it does very simple things. Any setting that could lead to inadvertent data loss is avoided. (There are occasional posts on the forum from folks who uncheck that ‘Copy Files to Library on Import‘ setting but who then don’t actually move the files from the camera. They wonder why iPhoto has “lost their photos“.)
You mention that you’re using the NAS so that access your photos in a number of ways. IF you can tell us what ways you use, perhaps we can help.
I just need to know which directories I imported to iPhoto.
How are these directories organised? Named?
    Regards
    TD

  • External drives won't dismount despite the fact that all apps are closed.

I've got 2 external drives and suddenly I can't shutdown my computer b/c the drives will not dismount. I keep getting an error message "The drive 'hello' is in use and could NOT be ejected. Try quitting apps and try again"
There are 0 apps open. Everything has been closed for over 10 minutes. ?

is a little app that will tell you what is holding the drive. Usually Spotlight or time machine related in my case, even though neither is doing anything at the time. I usually end up logging out and in again to be able to eject the drive,

  • ITunes Not Recognizing External Drive when Shuffle is Connected

I recently bought an external hard drive and transferred most of my ITunes library to the drive. I also directed ITunes to find all songs in the external drive. The external drive has generally worked well. However, whenever I connect my Shuffle to my computer's USB port, ITunes becomes unable to locate my song library. When I look in my external hard drive folder, my entire library's missing. But if i unplug the shuffle and restart my computer, all the files are visible again, and ITunes has no problem locating them. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like maybe the shuffle and the external hard drive are trying to use the same drive letter. Try changing the drive letter of the shuffle. If you change the letter of the drive iTunes will have problems finding your songs.

  • Free space in external drive when trash is empty

I had a big folder in my external hard disk (60 Gb) I sent it to the trash and then I empty the trash but the space the file occupied is still ocuppied in the drive. How do I free up the space in my external drive? I know it should be free but somehow emptying the trash didn't worked. Help!

This issue happens to me to on ALL my Macs. For example if I have a flash drive that is 1024 MB and I put on 9 files that are 100 MB the used space is of course 900 MB. But, if I delete one of them then the use space does not go down to 800 MB it stays at 900 MB. You can empty trash and free up used space and it never shows it available again.
I have tried all the Partition Schemes on the flash drives and hard drives I own. (All the drive are different manufactures.) I have tried different formats and it's still the same. I have used a New MacBook, New MacBook Pro, New iMac and they all do the same dang thing!!! I even used an old G4 eMac and same thing!
    It's defiantly an OS issue.
So what's up anyone have a REAL fix for this? I am tried of having to take data off of an external drive store it in a folder, then format the external then add my data back. It's getting to be freaking ridiculous.
My poodunk Windows doesn't do that!
OH FYI, A good fact to note if I use a drive partitioned as Partition Scheme MBR and Format FAT32 (so both OS can use it). The drive of course will work just fine on the Windows I can free up space and reuse space. But, when I put it in the Mac I will free up space and it won't be recognized anymore same issue, however if I put it back into my Windows the Windows NO LONGER sees the space I tried to free up with my Mac. I can continue to work with the space I have left, but the Mac has completely removed those blocks of data from being used again until I reformat the drive. Is that ODD?!
Now don't confuse that last paragraph and think it only happen on MDR or FAT32 Cuz it happens on all partition schemes and formats as I mentioned above. I just thought it was interesting that Mac effects the drive to where the other OS can't read that data anymore either.
    Please help!

  • Should I eject external drives when I shut down my Mac?

    Hello to all,
This might be a very elementary question to some, but I trust I will be given the proper answer. I have been using my Mac for nearly a year and I have not been ejecting my external drive/s once a day's work is over. I use the drop down menu to either put the Mac to sleep or shut it down. I allow the power to be on for the multi-socket spike from which my Mac and my drives get their power. Is this right or wrong? Any guidance in this matter will be appreciated.

    baltwo wrote:
FWIW, I never sleep desktop machines or their HDs, only their displays, and run 24/7, but do power down ext HDs and printers, since they're seldom used.
Hello and thanks baltwo. Sorry for this apparent delay in responding to your reply, reason being I did not have much time to sit on my Mac on account of the Festival of Peace being conducted here in Hyderabad where I stay. Am having a blessed time here attending the meetings.
Your reply has been worded precisley and I trust you are saying this:
You do not shut down or put your Mac to sleep, but put the display to sleep; and that you switch of the power to your ext drives and printers. Am I right?
I have with me a Buffalo thunderbolt [1 TB], a 2 TB, LaCie [2 TB] and 2 Seagate [2 TB] external drives. I was in the habit of having these drives mounted even though when I had no need of all of them. The Apple technician who had come to remove the RAM [see above] informed me that it was not a good thing to have all the drives connected at the same time. Since then I am trying to keep only those drives for which I had need mounted.
The thunderbolt has no external power supply and hence, if I have no need of its services, I have to eject it and then unplug it from the back of the Mac. The LaCie has a power switch conveniently located on the drive itself and ejecting it and unpowering it should be easy. For the Seagate drives, after ejecting them, I need to remove the power adapters from the power spike. At the end of the day, when one is tired, all these different processes may be cumbersome to me, but I would not mind adopting it if I could be instructed as to how this method of yours scores over the other method in which one shuts down the computer. My next thanks is awaiting you!
    Cheers and have agreat day.

  • My music is backed up on external drive when i disconnect the external drive itunes cannot locate the files on the PC harddrive and none of the music can be accessed how do i fix this?

My harddrive was wiped clean.  I upgraded operating system to fr vista to win 7.  All music was saved on an external hard drive and i have copied this to itunes on new operating system but itunes can not access any of the music without the external drive being connected.  error msg says original files cannot be located.  What to do?

It all depends a bit on how & what you backed up, and how you restored it. Select an affected track. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Click Cancel when asked to locate the file. Look at the location given on the summary tab. Now look through your computer for file in question. What are the two paths? iTunes could be using the wrong layout (pre or post iTunes 9) in error. Or your library could have been split on the previous system, and not restored to preciesly the same path. Posting back the two paths should make things clearer.

  • Automount External Drives When They Power Up?

I have 3 external drives running thru a USB hub to my Time Capsule.  Most of the time they are off.  Can Lion mount them automatically, putting icons on the desktop, when they are powered up?

Drives work in mysterious ways. I have 3 external firewire drives in a chain. Sometimes they all mount if they are powered on, sometimes one doesn't, or the other.
The fact that your drives are usb and that you have them running through a hub in addition to Time Capsule makes it iffier. I assume you meant a usb hub in addition to Time Capsule?
You might try NoSpin and see if it helps.
