Repairing HD using Disk Utility without an OSX system CD

I purchased a used iMac G4 700 Mhz pre-loaded with OSX 10.4.11 but without any install and restore disks. The system was working OK but froze when I was copying files from an external HD (music files from a Windows iTunes library) and I had to switch it off via the power button.
It restarted OK but I ran Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD and got the message that it needs to be repaired. This, of course, means I need to load the system from another disk!
The only start-up disks I have are Mac OS9 from a previous computer. Would I be able to use one of these to run Disk Utility on the Mac HD?
Another possibility would be to copy the OSX system folder to the external HD and use that as the start-up disk. Is this possible?
The machine is still working (I am using it to post this message) so I don't want to use trial and error methods myself and crash it completely.
Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome!
My concern with your copying your system (actually, "clone" is the operative task) to another drive is that damaged files could go with the clone and you'd have problems in two places instead of one.
Assuming you do the clone, it will have to be a 'bootable clone" created with utilities like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. The external drive must be bootable--for a G4 iMac that means the drive must be connected via FireWire (IEEE 1394). A USB external drive will not boot a Mac with a PowerPC processor.
The best action on your part could be to make contact with a Mac User group in your area. Maybe someone has system disks they could let you use long enough to repair the internal drive.

  • HT3275 I continue to get the following error message: Unable to complete back up.an error occurred while creating backup folder. It's a brand new drive. When I attempt to repair it using disk utility I get:unable to repair disk cannot unmounted

I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hope

I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

  • Can't locate disk (using Disk Utility) when reinstalling OSX v10.2

Having problems after wiping drive and reinstalling - Disk Utility & Installation do not show a drive for the machine. Viewing other posts suggest clicking on Erase tab and selecting MAC OS Extended - but the drop-down box is greyed out with MAC OS Standard displayed. Tried to use Disk Warrior but nothing displayed when I booted up from the CD. Is this an indicator that my drive needs replacing? Machine is old - G4 /450, and can't remember if I used the old software or Tiger with the previous installation.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

do you have your original mac install disks? try to use the apple hardware test program...it will check the main hardware and if there are hardware failures with your HD, or other components it'll give you heads up.
also post this question in the powermac G4 forum, might get more bites since this is the G4 MDD forum.

  • Use Disk Utility "Restore" to clone system Drive

I have always recommended that everyone use the Restore function under Disk Utility to clone their drive before each update, just incase one needs to quickly fall back to a working release.
Well I decided to test my cloned drive, and to make a long story short, be sure that you boot from a different drive than the one you want to clone. A clone made from the current/active startup drive does NOT boot (well mine would not boot).
So, boot from a backup drive/partition, one that is Panther works best as you do not have to worry about spotlight, or dashboard, or any of the other "cool" Tiger auto running programs getting in the way, then go into Disk Utility, and Restore, and clone your main startup drive. It creates a drive that will actually boot.
Maybe this was obvious to everyone, but I had been making my backup clone drive for the past year right from my main active startup drive. I never received an error that indicated there would be any problem with the cloned drive. Thank goodness that I NEVER had to use the backup.
Now I sleep peacefully at night, knowing I have a bootable replacement startup drive ready to go at a moments notice.

CCC has worked fine with 10.3.x but I have been having some issues getting the backup of 10.4 to be recognized.
I don't know if it is the disk (it's on a partition of a sloooow lacie) or the nature of the clone. In either case, it takes a couple of tries before the drive is found as a boot drive and it is a pain....
After a hugely painful and very, very expensive experience with failed backups (we lost the entire office's electronic records going back for 3 years), I have gotten in the habit of booting off the backups once every few weeks to verify they work.
In the immortal words of journalist and fiction writer Damon Runyon, "Trust, but verify."

  • How can I repair my OS X Boot Disk without a Recovery Partition (Using Disk Utility)

    Hey there,
I recently found that my OS X boot partition is corrupt (using DU's "Verify Disk" function). I would like to repair it using Disk Utility, but that would require me to boot from the Recovery Partition, which is a problem...
I have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition on my internal hard drive (using a Hybrid GPT - MBR Setup). Because of this, the Mountain Lion Installer wasn't able to install the Recovery Partition.
What is the best way to get Disk Utility to repair the disk in this situation. I know that I could boot another OS X install from an external hard drive and use that to repair the disk. This is a bad option for me because I don't really have a spare external hard drive that I could use (or partition)... Other than that, I'm clueless
    Thanks in advance

Unless you install Mountain Lion properly you'll not have a Recovery HD partition. Your options are to install Mountain Lion on another drive from which to boot the computer should you need to use Disk Utility. Or you can try this:
Boot into single-user mode.  After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it.  At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK."  If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter:
    reboot
and press RETURN to restart the computer.

There is no option for "DVD and CD Sharing" on a 2011 Mini because it doesn't have an optical drive to share. That option is available only on computers with an optical drive to share.
That option is used, on the other "donor" computer with an optical drive that you want to use/share. On the other computer you turn on "DVD and CD Sharing", allowing its optical drive to be shared. Then on the Mini you connect to it with "remote disc".
I believe you're thinking about the "DVD and CD Sharing" System preference in reverse; you activate it on the computer whose optical drive you want to use/share, not on the Mini without an optical drive.
See the following which explains how to set up and use remote disc: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777?viewlocale=en_US

  • Using Disk Utility to restore/copy disk - who is correct?

I had two long talks with two separate Apple Care people online today who both insisted what they were saying was right and the other person was wrong.
    Hmm....
    My question is this.
I have a MBP and the internal HD is currently empty. I've been running off of an external HD for about a year now.
I want to clone my external HD into my internal HD and use the internal HD as my system disk now.
One Apple Care person said to go into Disk Utility, select the source disk, from the tabs on the right hand side select Restore and then drag the source disk into the source field, drag the target disk into the target field and press restore. She said this will make a complete clone of the external HD in the internal HD.
The other Apple Care person said "No no no. You can't do that to clone a system disk that way." He said the best thing was to install a new system and then use the restore as a new system from Time Machine option (where I also have a backup.)
I believe the second method will work, but it's more cumbersome for me because I haven't been backing up everything in Time Machine. I have excluded items, such as podcasts and Parallels disk images.
If I could do this from the external system disk life would be easier.
But is the first Apple Support person right or wrong about this? Can I use Disk Utility to copy the system disk from one external HD to another that way?
    Thanks,
    doug
p.s. I am not in the market for 3rd party software to deal with this one-time issue, so if possible I would like to accomplish this using OS X included features...

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

  • Cannot repair disk errors for OSX boot volume using Disk Utility while booted from different disk

I have tried three times to repair my boot volume (OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) permissions using Disk Utility while booted up on a different volume (running Snow Leopard 10.6.4).  After hours of Disk Utility reporting that it HAD fixed the problems, an immediate click of "Verify permissions" immediately results in the apparently same continuous stream of permission errors.

Then better luck next time around. Here are some ideas for then:
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
    Follow instructions for installation.

  • MacBook stuck on apple logo. Repaired disk using disk utility, but when I restart, I'm still stuck on apple logo. Please help!

My MacBook is stuck on apple logo and heats up. I tried restarting in safe mode but it's still stuck. I also tried to repair the disk using disk utility. It says that HD is ok, so when I restart, I'm still stuck on the logo. Is there a way I could fix this without loosing my files?

Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X: About OS X Recovery
From there you can reinstall OS X, repair the startup disk, and restore from a Time Machine backup.
FYI ... wiht ML installed, the only way to repair the startup disk is OS X Recovery, not the Disk Utility app installed on your Mac. You can verify but not repair.

  • Can not repair disk using disk utility

I tried using disk utility to repair the main drive of my imac 24" (2007) model and it says that the number of files are off by 1 from the total number that should be there so it could not be prepared it said to start up using the install disk but that was crack in a recent move. We tried disk warrior and it would not repair the main drive because thats where disk warrior is so i did a graph and it said 950,000 (ball park) files are out of order and could not be graphed. The only reason i could think that files would be out of order is my 3 year old he has a game on here and learned the awesome concept of click and drag so before we put a lock on it he was dragging things from the dock and putting them in the trash so he may have rearranged things without knowing. the computer has been extra slow recently and the "white screen" when you restart stays for about 2 mins before the apple timer appears. We have an antivirus so the drive is clean as far as that goes. Please if anyone could help respond back!!
    Thanks
    Luke

you can not repair a boot up drive while you are booted from it. You really need to get your leopard install DVD replaced. You need it just for these kinds of situations.
You can repair the drive from Single user mode
restart the computer and hold command+S at the chime. a black screen with white text will come up. at the prompt enter
    */sbin/fsck -fy*
that's the drive repair command. wait for the repair to finish. If there are any errors, run it again till no errors are reported.
    Once done, enter
    reboot
    to restart normally.

You might also be able to reinstall Lion without a flash drive, by booting up the computer holding the Command + R keys, and choosing Reinstall OS X.

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

    Thank you!

When you erased the disk did you select Mac OS Extended Journaled as the format option?

I recently starting receiving the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to... An erro occurred while copying files.  The problem may be temporary.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently.  I've made no major changes.  I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems.  The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message.  I can see the shared drive in Finder.  The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up.  I can see the shared folders on the networked drive.  The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops.  Can anyone help?

You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

I called Apple Support after getting no usuable help through the Apple Forums. The rep felt is was a problem with the two older USB 2.0 drives compatablility with the Retina Macbook Pro's USB 3.0. He kindly offered to send me a Compatable USB 3.0 Drive, but could not offer a solution.
FYI, I tried using different cords and both USB 3.0 ports on my Retina MacBook Pro and both are self powered.
    Thanks,
    Chris
