Repairing permissions frequently - daily

Can anyone shed light on this puzzle?: I have to repair permissions at least 2 or 3 times every day. I generally run only Mail 2.1.3, Safari 3.1.2, Filemaker Pro 5.5v2, Quickeys 3.2.3, and a small number of always-on gadgets (Sidenote, TypeIt4Me, Alarm Clock 2, NetBarrier - all current versions). I'm almost always running Safari and I do go through lots of tabs in a session (a minimum of about 500 each day), but I close excess tabs regularly (wish Safari would do that automatically!), and I relaunch Safari several times each day.
At least 2 or 3 times every day, Safari slows to a crawl and I use Oasis to repair permissions. It's almost always the same group of permissions that need repair. Here they are:

Can anyone shed some light on why this happens so frequently, and what I might do about it? I've tried running Activity Monitor to see if that would tell me anything, but either it doesn't or I don't know what to look for.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

Then try this:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Many, including me, have had success with adding DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • How frequently to delete/reset Safari plist & repair permissions?

Seems I am having to do this about once a week to keep Safari running. Feedback please.

Safari has had intermittent issues with hanging and slowness loading a page since I've had the machine.
It obviously shouldn't be like that. Try this:
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    Any improvement?

  • I'm frequently having to repair permissions to get internet access

I have using 10.4.11, using an ethernet adapter for wireless - which is working fine, green light and all. But then out of nowhere - after 10 minutes or so - the net connection stop working. I got my network settings on IP4, sometimes re-enter manually and have it set at DHCP w/manual (the adapter has a fixed IP it needs, apparently) trash stuff in my systemconfiguration file as recommend by BDAqua before .....
but what seems to do the trick is repairing permissions and rebooting. everytime I repair permissions, I get this message:
    Determining correct file permissions.
Group differs on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist, should be 80, group is 502
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
I am tired of having to put in all this time, just to get back to normal, especially since I seem to have to do it every half hour. I understand it has something to do with a Security Update, but I would love to know the long-term fix.
Thanks in advance for any and all help. If you don't hear from me for a while, I may be I'm not connected to the internet!

    Let's try more at once...
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, trash these files...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.<12 digit number>.plist

Reboot once more, and set it up again.

  • Safari and Chrome causing OS X 10.6.7 to crash frequently (daily) on certain websites

I'm having problems with Safari and Chrome causing my MacBook Pro to crash almost daily when visiting some websites (e.g. ABCNews.com).  It is happening more frequently after recent upgrade to 10.6.7, but has happened frequently since i bought this laptop.  Not sure if it's an applet thing or not.  Here's my problem details and system configuration output from the problem report:

I think a similar thing is happening to me on my 2011 MBAir running the latest updates on Yosemite (10.10.1).
First noticed issues on Chrome with websites like FB, Google Docs, some Apple support pages, Gmail, and other random sites. Chrome would show me the "Aw snap" page. Then tried resolving in Chrome by uninstalling extensions and creating a new profile with no luck. Then when I tested it on Safari, similar websites were crashing, except Safari threw up an error log immediately that looks a lot like the one above. The copied and pasted message is at the end of this post.
Then when I was editing a movie on iMovie, it started freezing up with no error messages or warning whenever I tried to edit a title manually.
It seems like a hardware issue, so I rebooted the Mac holding down D (I think) in order to get the hardware checker. Did that, no issues. Also tried repairing permissions.
If I'm seeing a pattern, I'd say that it was crashing on more complex websites like FB and Google Docs. Many other sites work fine, like this page I'm writing this post in, Google searches, etc.
I'm absolutely stumped on this one. The next thing I try will be to reinstall OS X, but I won't be able to do that for a while because it takes about 12 hours on my internet connection...
    Any ideas??

  • Disk utility - disk repair permissions

I recently upgraded from OSX Tiger to Snow Leopard and also upgraded Firefox to 20.0, but have kept Safari as the default browser. Ever since, it doesn't take long for everything to slow down especially the 'net. I use disk utility to repair disk permissions (almost daily!)  which helps. This takes about an hour. The problem seems to be in the System Library Core Services; e.g under Remote Management Resources Library it should be "drwxr-xr-x" but is "-rwxr-xr-x"  and so on down the line including System Library Frameworks, Java.....       What caused this and what can I do to get back to proper functioning?

I use disk utility to repair disk permissions (almost daily!)  which helps.
No it doesn't. That's a complete waste of time.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Most of my bugs dissappeared after repairing permissions.

I have had many of the bugs I have seen discussed on these forums. I have just finished repairing disk permission (using Disk Warrior) and all of those bugs have disappeared.
I highly recommend repairing permissions to every Logic user.

Nothing? I am now doing a daily backup of my Notes to my HD, but would really like to recover the ones that dissapeared when I did the update. Why do the ones on my Time Machine backup not restore properly? Is anyone else able to restore from a TM backup? Thank you for any information anyone has on this.

having problem w 3rd party software ., there tech advsed me to repair  permissions  before  reinstalling software . However  , querrie says  repairing permissions  is not good for  system .  whats up ,, help  !!!

    I've fixed the problem - I think.
I forgot I had the program "Little Snitch" installed on my computer. So I went into it and saw that it was blocking most of my connections for all the programs I use on a daily basis. Once I lifted the RULE to those certain programs - BAM - everything came back to life in an instant!

  • How often to repair permissions?

How often should one need to repair permissions?
It seems that I need to do so too frequently in order to repair sluggish or erratic performance.
    Adam

Permissions shouldn't have to be repaired unless there is a permissions problem. Are you getting permissions messages when you open files/apps?
Slow, erratic behavior doesn't sound like a permissions problem. I'm not sure why RP is helping this.
How much RAM do you have installed?
How often and after how long does this happen?
Please post your Console > system.log from around the time of the last slowdown/permissions repair. Maybe we can find something there. Depending on how often this happens, you may be able to test it bystarting up in Safe Mode  (It will take more time to startup because it runs a directory check.)
If your system functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop.

  • Repairing permissions on a new MAC PRO .... why are they NOT repairing?

    Hi.
    Thanks for reading this.
I just got a MAC PRO running OS 10.5.7
Processor is a 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
Four 1 TB internal hard drives
    6 GB RAM
I am up to date on everything.
(Just ran software update this morning before typing this)
I KEEP getting the same "errors" every time I run Repair Permissions on Disk Utility or Drive Genius 2:
    (Details copied below)
Is there anything that can be done about this?
I seem to recall something similar years ago on a G4 where permissions could be repaired all day long and you would get the same things coming up.

  • Repair Disk  / Repair Permissions -- which first

If I want to run repair permissions or repair disk, which should I do first?
    Does it matter?

"Repair disk" makes modifications to the structure of data on the disk itself. If there is an error, this really needs to be done first since the errors could manifest themselves as botched permissions, mangled files, etc. If the disk's integrity is actually compromised, the highest priority is to repair it. One thing to keep in mind is that certain repairs cannot be made on a mounted disk (such as the one you boot from), so for the disk repair procedure to work, you should boot of another disk (your OS installation disk, a bootable external hard disk, etc.). Even then, Apple's disk repair is curiously basic -- there's many errors it simply does not detect or fix and for that you need something like DiskWarrior. Mind you, disk errors like that shouldn't occur, and if they do you may have hardware issues to be concerned about.
"Repair permissions" compares file ownership and permissions in a directory to a list stored in the package bundles in /Library/Receipts. If there's a difference between what it finds in the file list stored in the receipt package, and the files on disk, it attempts to set the permissions and ownership of the file to what appears in the list (which should reflect the state of the file when installed). It doesn't do anything at all to preferences, user preferences, user files, logs, file created after and application is installed, etc.
Contrary to popular belief, repairing permissions doesn't generally do much for you. It should be pretty rare that it finds a difference unless you've really been mucking about, and generally when it does find something it's either because you explicitly changed the permissions or because there's some other problem where an application or disk issue is changing the permissions. The one time where it really makes sense, actually, is after you repair a disk issue.
It's common advice that people tell you to repair permissions as a step to address problems, but mostly because it's an easy thing to do. Similarly, zapping your PRAM is frequently advised when trouble-shooting, though the process of a cold-boot (complete power-off, then power back on a few seconds later) is generally the portion of that procedure that actually produces the desired result.

  • What does 'Repair Permissions' mean anyway?

Repairing permissions is usually my first line of defense (after re-start) whenever things go a little screwy, but I really don't know what that means. What exactly is being repaired? And what's being "permitted"? Is it about corrupted files?
I'm just curious (and a little confused).
    : )

Repairing permissions should not be the first line of defense if you have problems. In fact permissions should rarely ever require repairing and rarely solve any problem. Here's some good reading:
    Repair Permissions- A false panacea

If you want to keep your computer running smoothly, then read the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • "Repair Permissions" Required Too Often?

I find that repairing permissions on my HD is frequently needed, even if new software has not been added. Does anyone know why the same files would require permission repair over and over again? Specifically as follows, from Disk Utility Log:
Permissions differ on ./System/Library/User Template, should be drwx------ , they are drwxr-xr-x
Owner and group corrected on ./System/Library/User Template
    Permissions corrected on ./System/Library/User Template
Permissions differ on ./usr/libexec/dumpemacs, should be -r-sr-xr-x , they are -r-xr-xr-x
Owner and group corrected on ./usr/libexec/dumpemacs
    Permissions corrected on ./usr/libexec/dumpemacs
Does it have anything to do with the following text appearing in the Console Log?:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 (Build 8S165)
    2008-09-04 13:05:49 -0700

Sep 4 13:05:55 Macintosh mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user-specified Computer Name; using default “Macintosh-001124382992” instead
I have no idea how to resolve either of the above oddities.

    Hi Bill,
No need to worry about a small number of ones that always need repeating, it's normally caused by some APP or function using the files for their own use.
As to the second problem, see if this helps...

  • Repair Permissions keeps correcting the same permission.

Tiger–Repair Permissions corrects the owner group of ./private/Var/log/secure.log to -rw------ from -rw-r-------. It is my father's iMac and he firmly believes that this incorrect permission slows the computer. Once the permissions are changed, they soon return to the same setting and are trapped again by Repair Permissions. Question...is this an invisible file that could slow the computer? Is it only a log? Should this quirk just be ignored?

AFAIK, that's a cosmetic bug that occurs when the daily maintenance task rotates the various logs. It won't affect system performance. Unless there's some underlying problem he's trying to fix, tell him to ignore it and advise him to only repair permissions after he updates Apple software.

  • Repairing Permissions With DU -Vs- MainMenu

    Hello,
I was curios does it matter if I repair permissions with disk Utility versus repairing them with Main Menu Pro version? Also will it hurt doing system maintenance using Main Menu. I know Main Menu is 3rd party, but I think it has been around long enough to be trusted. I've used it on my iMac 2008 without issue, but don't want to take any chances with this new MBP.
    Jaco

All maintenance applications use the same programs as Disk Utility so it wouldn't make any difference. But you can perform all the needed maintenance that the third-party software does just a few specific utilities.
There isn't that much maintenance required. Disk Utility can repair permissions (something you should rarely if ever need to do) as well as repair the hard drive. For the rest of it you can install the freeware, Applejack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
For the occasional time when a hard drive has a problem DU cannot fix use Disk Warrior. And, to clean caches if needed use Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner.
    Also, see:

Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. • Repaired permissions, now TM doing a full backup?

Hi, intelligent user who doesn't have much advanced knowledge concerning what Repairing Permissions even means here.
So I'm planning on replacing my Macbook Pro's HD, and I just finished making a full bootable backup onto a 200GB FW drive using Super Duper, and checked the "Repair Permissions first" option. I figured that having a latest Time Machine backup (1TB Time Capsule) would make sense as well, so before powering down to unscrew the case I did a Back Up Now. It scanned the entire computer and decided that it would backup all 70 GB fresh. I'm assuming this has something to do with having repaired permissions, but I don't quite know what that means. It may be something similar to what recently happened to me, when I erased my whole computer and refreshed from Time Machine, and then on the next backup it did everything over again instead of updating (for that backup I can still browse dates before that happened as long as I start at the root drive).
Anyone know what I could do to fix this?

    Brian wrote:
We have to be careful here: there are three different scenarios:
New computer or logic board. Time Machine identifies your computer by it's +Media Access Control address+ (MAC address), embedded in the hardware of the logic board. There is a way that some folks have gotten around this on Leopard after a new logic board, but it's tedious and very easy to mess up (I did that, twice!) per the link in #C8 of Troubleshooting. (It's very dangerous on a different Mac).
That was automated for Snow Leopard, resulting in the Re-Use prompt mentioned in #B5 of Troubleshooting. But, as #B5 specifies, Time Machine usually still does a full backup; the advantage is, Time Machine will delete the old backups normally.
New drive on the same Mac (per the link you provided). I don't believe that works on Snow Leopard, and I've not seen a hack specifically for Snow Leopard posted here.
Full restore (from Time Machine, a "clone", or otherwise) to the same drive on the same Mac. This almost always results in a new, full backup. An Apple engineer said that would stop with Snow Leopard, but obviously didn't. Some real techie UNIX guru decided there ought to be a way to do it; he posted a two-page log here a few months ago, of altering all sorts of things via Terminal, converting UUIDs to hex, etc., and claimed to have made it work. But he did it only as an exercise, and even he wouldn't recommend it, even to expert UNIX types.
. . . I suppose the best way to save space on my Time Capsule (it now has at least 3 copies of my entire system with only very minor differences in the existence of some files) would be to make sure I have all the files I will ever want to have backed up, then delete the old records, which is something I presume wouldn't be too hard, make a fresh backup, then delete whatever I don't think I need right now, knowing it will all be found by scrolling back to July of 2010?
I'd have to agree. It just isn't worth the hassle, or the risk of damaging something that you might not notice for a long time. I have no problem hacking around with most things, but not my backups.
Depending on whether Time Machine made new sparse bundles, it may not be too tedious to delete the old backups. See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
