Repairing permissions hangs with 1 minute to go

Having sleep problems on a new 10.5.2 MacBook. Decided to repair permissions and then do Combo updater to 10.5.4
The bar gets to about 20% with 1 minute remaining and then it seemingly hangs - though you can see the bar pulsating.
I tried just verifying permissions and the same thing happens.
Tried verifying the disk and all is well.

Charlie,
Thanks. After posting I found a forum that said to have patience. ( I had searched previously before posting).
I waited it out and it took about 15 minutes.
I was surprised because my MacBook Pro running Leopard does not seem to take so long. The other forum suggested that deselecting multiple foreign languages at install may make a difference.
thanks

  • Repair permissions stuck at 2 minutes for half an hour

my wife's macbook (white plastic) gets stuck when repairing permissions.
i tried reinstalling OS X snow leopard and then installing the 10.6.2 combo update, but it still sticks at 2 minutes. anyone else experience this?

I haven't but try Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Click Repair Permissions.
    Restart your computer when done.
Try running repair permissions after you reach the desktop to see if it completes.

  • Repair permissions hangs

When I try to repair permissions, using Disk Utility or OnyX, it stops before it finishes.
Does anyone have an idea why this happens and how to fix it?
    Thank you.

    Hi Palmer
If you've got 10.3.9 or earlier, and recently updated to iTunes 6.02, then try the following fix, which seems to have worked for most people (see other Discussion forums here where literally THOUSANDS of people have hit this problem thanks to Apple screwing up the iTunes update so that Disk Utility can no longer repair permissions, and not posting a fix to help us out. Thanks, Apple.) ...rant rant rant....
The fix is: Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
That should let you run Disk Utilty to Repair Permissions AND keep iTunes 6.02 in the Applications Folder.

  • Repair permissions now takes 15-30 minutes

In leopard, permissions repair was slooooow. but upon moving to SL, it got a lot faster - that is, until just recently, probably coinciding with the 10.6.2 update, where it now gets stuck at the "2 minutes remaining" mark for approximately 15-30 minutes. it is at this point, we get the message:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    anyone else experience this?
btw - this is on my wife's white macbook, not my MBP.

i've seen this issue before - but my problem is that repairing permissions takes up to half an hour now. on my MBP, which runs the same version of OSX and has a much bigger drive, repairing permissions takes under 5 minutes.
i'm wondering if it's an unrelated issue. is it possible to see what's hanging up the permissions repair?

  • Repairing permissions before and after updating software

What is the reason to repair permissions before and after updating software? This may sound like a stupid question to many of you, but I am new to computers and I am trying to learn how and why of some of the things of my PowerBook. I installed some updates without repairing permissions. Did I install some software updates the wrong way? Thank you.

This is a topic which will draw as many emphatic for and against responses as overnight shut down or not, defrag or not, optimise or not, and so on.
I agree with Neil. I believe that OS X has progressed sufficiently that repair permissions has become redundant and so I do not do it on any regular basis.
Some folk may refer you to an Apple Support Article 303602. That Article in its 4 May 2006 version, titled "Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" suggested Repair Permissions should be done "after upgrading or installing new software". The Article was however revised on 15 May 2006 to be titled "Top Tips to Keep Your Mac in Top Form" and the item on Repair Permissions [along with two other recommended maintenance tips] was removed. It is my view that the conclusion to be drawn here is that Apple no longer considers Repair Permissions to be a required maintenance procedure.
Many users have adopted a "Repair Permissions" mantra for a cure-all over several years. I dropped it sometime in 10.3.
    But, to each his own.

  • Repair permissions Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit, ever since time machine system restore

Recently had to restore system 10.5.8 Leopard startup volume using Time machine. After many hours of migrating additional important databases that were recovered from failing startup drive, everything seemed to be back up and running smoothly on a new WD 1tb Black drive. Right before I run timemachine again to backup the new revised seemingly stable startup volume, I choose to repair disk permissions using disk utility. Repair permissions failed with this error, The underlying task reported faliure on exit. I tried using the OS X DVD to repair permissions, Diskwarrior, Onyx, none are able to reapair the disk permissions. Although everything seems perfect I would imagine that the system will fail eventually. It's strange that I had no problems repairing disk permissions in the past on this particular system that was the most recent backup. What should I do ?

Repair permissions always reports a bunch of stuff.  Ignore it if it says it completed successfully.
Also note that is it usually a waste of time (except maybe after a system upgrade).

  • Repair/Verify Permissions hanging...

    hi!
this is my first post on here and i'm hoping someone can help me. i have osx 10.5.2 installed on 2 separate hard drives and on both of those, when trying to run the repair or verify permissions in disk utility, it hangs with the progress bar about 1/4 way done. does anyone know why this is, and how do i fix/get around this problem? thanks in advance for any help.

How long did you wait? The Repair Permissions with Leopard takes much longer than it did in Tiger.
Times reported in this forum have been reported as long as 4 to 40 minutes.
It goes about a forth of the way and says 1 Minute remaining and stays there for a while (last time I did it, I timed it as about 5 minutes), and then it reports another time, which is also usually inaccurate and much longer than it actually takes.
Be patient and let it run. Get some coffee or go for a walk.

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.

  • Help With Repair Permissions!

    Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

    Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.

every time I repair my iPod with iTunes, it hangs at the end of the process (while checkin the recovery of iPod). What can I do?

I chose to restore it to factory defaults, but that never succeeded.
It hangs at the end of the process.
    printscreen:

    Language is Dutch :-)
    Littery it says:
    Check of Recovery of iPod.
    Already for 40 minutes.
    I closed down iTunes.
Now, when I turn on my iPod, there is the icon of iTunes with an usb cable towards it.
When I attach it to my computer and turn on iTunes, the message is there that a iPod was stuck in recovery mode and I should retry it.
And then I get the same story. Unpacking, installing, checking... blocked!

  • Repair permissions with disk utility

I have tried all the suggestions about permissions repair and have recently reinstalled the combo upgrade to x.5.2 twice. I am still unable to repair permissions with the disk utility. It stalls at one minute for 20 minutes and completes after at least an hour repeating the usual messages, as reported in other posts,

Another possibility... the first time I ran Disk Utility after the upgrade it ran easily for an hour before finishing. Now it takes a few minutes, with the usual "ACL found not found" garbage.
Try leaving your computer on overnight. Most of the Cocktail functions replicate the standard Mac clean up functions that occur in the early hours of the morning. The next day, restart, run Disk Utility - Verify. If that comes up clean, try Permissions again. Let it run until it finishes even if that is well over an hour. BTW... make sure that your machine is updated to 10.5.2, disconnect any external drives, USB or Firewire devices and make sure that there are no programs open. You may even have to check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items to see if something is running in the background that can be temporarily turned off.

  • Can't repair permissions with Install Disk

My install disk is not recognized by Leopard, which I installed like two months ago and kept up to date on regular basis. I have repaired permissions on various occasions already, but out of the blue, today the disk is ejected with no explanation at all. I tried the disk on another Mac, and it works flawless.
I repaired permissions from the other machine and tried to use the DVD again in my MacBook Pro and again the problem arrises.
Can this be related to the last firmware update?
Thank you very much in advance for any help you can provide.
    Lucho

Thanks for your prompt response. Unfortunately, PRAM zap didn't solve the problem, and I watched the hole Bourne Ultimatum film 20 minutes ago....
Luckily the DVD player seems to work with CD's, and DVD's
Still fishing for a trick to end this problem.

  • Problem With Disk Utility - Repair Permissions

Is anyone else having this problem. When I go to verify or repair permissions using Disk Utility, it behaves nothing like it did in Tiger. For 1, takes like 10 minutes... took about 2 before. And 2, I keep getting a Warning message:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I installed Leopard doing an Erase and Install.... so this was a fresh - full install. What's the deal?

Oh for the love of god, it begins again!
    Folks, chill out!
Leopard introduces a completely different "installer package receipt" format called a flat file format based on SQLite. The database file on my Mac (from a pre-release version of Leopard) is the following:
    /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
The file is 140 MB in size and contains a ton of information. Sorry, I'm currently burning my final copy of Leopard to a DVD otherwise I'd run Repair Permissions here on the pre-release version I'm currently running and comment on the results. I did notice that it takes a while longer than in Tiger. It's quite possible that Repair Permissions in Leopard is looking at many more things than just the basic file permissions that it did in Tiger, Panther, or Jaguar.
Access Control Lists (ACLs) are an additional, advanced type of permission setting for files and directories. The fact that Repair Permissions in Leopard even mentions ACLs suggests that it's concerning itself with a great deal more things than it did in Tiger, Panther, or Jaguar.
I didn't get that message about ARDAgent in the pre-release versions, I'll take a look at it more once I finish burning and installing the release version.
ARDAgent is part of Apple Remote Desktop, and 'SUID' refers to a "SetUID" executable. (For more info on SetUID, you might check out my page on http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fdup/fdup.html where I wrote a utility to repair the permissions of Jaguar Disk Utility's Repair Permissions feature. All that warning is saying is that Disk Utility isn't going to alter the permissions on the file. I honestly don't think it's anything to worry about, nor are any of the other messages that it reports.

  • Verify/Repair disk permissions hangs

    Hello,
Since yesterday my SL became kind of unstable and I have to reboot it because of a hang with a spinning wheel quite often.
I want to verify/repair the disk permissions but the tasks never completes. When I run it via the GUI in the Disk Utility, it goes to around 5% then nothing happens even if I wait several hours. I can cancel the repair.
I also tried to run it via the command line but the progress stays at 0% :
    ~ $ sudo diskutil verifyPermissions /
Started verify/repair permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD
    0% ...............................................
    ~ $ sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
Started verify/repair permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD
    0% ...............................................
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Tex

From your description it sounds like the internal HD is failing. It should be under 1 year old so you are covered by the warranty, make an appointment ASAP with your local Apple Store or AASP to bring it in. In addition if you have not purchased AppleCare now is the time to get it, AppleCare will extend your warranty to 3 years. However you must buy it buy it within the first year of ownership!
Here is a link you can use to make an appointment.

  • Repair permissions with disk utility not showing details

I've recently upgraded from Lion OSX 10.7.5 directly to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3.
    1. Now, every time I use the Disk Utility to repair permissions, the details of the repair are missing. Not that I really need to see the repairs but the information confirmed that something was done. Now I see only what appears on the attached screen shot at the end of the repair.
When I had OSX 10.7, I always saw which files were repaired.
    2. Also, the estimated time for repair is off. Under Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3, the estimate says a fixed "1 minute" and remains so until finished. I just time the repair at 3.5 minutes and the estimate remained at 1 minute.
Under OSX 10.7 the repair time estimate would begin at 23 minutes or so then quickly work itself down in minutes until the repair was completed.
Can anyone tell me what's going with my iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.8.3).

    James --
Over the years, the function or understanding of Repair Permissions has changed drastically.  When I first came here in 2004, lots of people thought RP was the "be all, and end all" of all Mac problems. (Myself included.)  It was right up there with "take two aspirins, and call me in the morning." kind of response.
In fact, the notations you see are not in fact "errors."  They're notations.  And if you run them all day, you will almost always see the same ones over and over.
Every once in a while, if you experiences really wonky problems that seem unexplanable, the option to RP makes sense. Especially after a huge major application installation, especially Adobe apps
RP is not like a regular maintenance procedure.  So, if you're not expelriencing very significant problems with your Mac, repairing permissions is probably not a good use of your time.
