Repairing permissions - never repairs
Whenever I repair permissions, I get the list below of stuff that has been repaired:

However, I don't think they have been repaired since these items show up every time I repair permissions.
Does anyone know why this is so and how I can repair these permissions for good?

There are lot of things behind the scenes that change permissions, things that only the engineers know.
And they are not necessarily errors . . . They're more like notations.
At the end of your messages, does it say, "Repair permissions complete?"
If so, you're fine. You can ignore them.
You should only be concerned if it says "Repair Permissions could not be completed."

Verify & Repair Disk Permissions never get completed
I tried so many times on Verify Disk Permission, and Repair as well, however, both never get to complete the whole scanning process. I don't know what to do with it... Please help!!!

I have a silly suggestion. Maybe if you corrected permissions by hand, it would fix the problem. Try the following commands:
sudo chmod 644 /usr/share/man/man1/more.1
sudo chown root:wheel /usr/share/man/man1/more.1
You must execute the command as a system administrator and when prompted for a password, give the admin's password. I'm not sure what effect that will have though. /usr/share/man/man1/more.1 and /usr/share/man/man1/less.1 are actually hard links to the same file. On my system, changing one changes the other, which I don't believe is POSIX compliant. (but I haven't looked that up) Maybe that's one of the anomalies of linked files on HFS+ filesystems. However, I'm able to make the change on my system so it's certainly worth trying.
I don't really know what's happened to your systems but it's certainly not something that should cause you to reinstall. At the very worst, you should be able to get a single copy of the file and recreate the links. The first step is to figure out what state your systems are in. What do you get when you execute the following command:
ls -l /usr/share/man/man1/more.1 /usr/share/man/man1/less.1
It would be most useful if you post the output you get before you try the fix in my previous paragraph.

Permissions NEVER get Repaired...
I run DISK UTILITY and "verify permissions" then do "repair permissions".
If I run Disk Utility again (immediately afterwards) there is a whole list permissions to be repaired again.
So I did "repair" and rebooted the iMac.
Launch Disk Utility... Again, a long list of fixes.
All of the issues are this:
SYSTEM/LIBRARY/core services...
SYSTEM/LIBRARY/framework...
SYSTEM/LIBRARY/remote management...
This is a recent issue. I'm thinking that one of the kids may have downloaded something buggie, a website, etc...
Any ideas?

ThanxFret not - the apparently unrepaired stuff is due to DU not being 'informed' that the items have been moved, usually during updates. As long as the message at the end of the list says "permissions repair completed" there's nothing to worry about.

Repair permissions never seems to repair
I always seem to have a ton of issues when I run Repair Permissions. For example, I ran it twice in a row, one immediately after the other and most of the same errors were identified in the second run despite supposedly being repaired a minute or two earlier. What gives?

These "messages" are not "errors" that mean anything is wrong. Nothing is wrong, and some future update will likely address the issue. For now you can simply ignore them.

The only time it's necessary to repair disk permissions is before and after all software updates.

I ran fix permissions three times now and the same files keep getting fixed during each run. why is that happening? why do they never get fixed?

Recently I had an issue with my photo thumbnails not syncing properly to my iphone. applecare wasn't able to resolve the problem, even after completely restoring the iphone. in the process of troubleshooting this, i noticed that there were many permissions that needed fixed in the /usr, /system/library, and /applications/itunes folders, all of which would repair themselves but need repaired immediately again. I could post the list of them if it would help, but I'm wondering what the fix for this is? reinstalling a system combo update? other than this iphone issue i'm not experiencing problems but I've never had permissions behave like this before.
Hi, I'm getting the same messages. Is it possible to do something to stop this happening? It is quite confusing.
At present, my computer keeps crashing after startup. If I shut the computer of by holding the power button, and start up again it generally works, and continues to work fine all day, but the next morning the same thing happens again. I thought it was something to do with the permissions, but it seems perhaps this is not the problem.
Also, I have a Apple DVI to ADC Adapter connected to my new Mini, could this be causing the problem? on the odd occasion I have noticed the screen flicker before crashing, the computer has even powered off completely on two occasions.
I am getting a little worried now, because I have had to force shutdown so many times now, at least once a day, and worried I will eventually damage my hard disk.
I would greatly appreciate some help

PPC G5 OS X 10.5.8 using disk utility not all permissions repaired

My G5 PPC iMac OS X 10.5.8, Processor 2GHz, memory 2 GB DDR SDRAM, Total Capacity:149.1 GB (160,041,885,696 Bytes)
Applying Disk Utility to Repair Permissions there are always 12 permissions never repaired! Should I delete then reinstall the Operating system? OR
Is there something else that could be the problem?

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

Verifying permissions freezes.
Booting from the install disk, running disk utility. Verify permissions and repair permissions never complete. Disk repair says, disk ok. What gives?
I ran the tasks for about twenty minutes per option (verify/repair). Runs with a full continues bar, not a fill as it completes process bar. I will run the tasks overnight and see what happens. I'll keep the mac from sleeping but will turn off the screen. Will run off power outlet.

Mac Pro- Damaged Disk/Permissions - Disk Warrior unable to fix, please help
Hey, I am really hoping I can solve this over the discussion board. My Mac Pro 1,1, with OSX 10.6.2 installed, has been acting up really badly lately. Random crashes, really slow, and my Radeon XT1900 is about to die, I think; the fan almost never turns off.
But the main issue I'd like to address is my damaged home disk. I booted up from the install disk and used Disk Utility to "Verify and Repair Disk" on my home disk. It said that the "Header has some minor damage," the repair finished and DU reported that it had repaired the volume and everything was fine.
However, after booting up from the HD, I went back into Disk Utility and did another "Verify Disk" to double check. It came up with an error stating: "Disk Utility stopped verifying 'Home' The disk needs to be repaired. Startup your computer with another disk and use DU to repair this disk."
So I booted from the install disk again, ran Disk Utility, and it said that everything was fine. So I booted back from HD, ran DU - only for it to report the same error as before. Why is DU reporting a problem when booting from disk, but it says there is no problem when running from the install disk?
I decided to get Disk Warrior to see if that would help. I used it to "Repair Disk Permissions" and also "Check All Files & Folders". Disk Warrior then stopped saying: "An unexpected error occurred while attempting to perform the file operations. Restart from DW disc and try again. ERROR CODE (2903, -8902)."

So my main question is: Why, after Disk Utility, running off the install disk, reports that it "repaired - some minor damage to the header," does it then report the "header is damaged" when booted from the system?Don't rely on just Apple First Aid, or trust it with finding and repairing.
Sorry you had to wait this long to get Disk Warrior.
You should always run DW from another hard drive.
Install a fresh clean copy of 10.6.x on a small 30GB partition for emergency only.
you can use that to boot from to run repairs and maintenance using Apple and Disk Warrior.
Don't bother using DVDs or CD to boot from.
It sounds like you are running DW and DU from hard drives, but not clear which or from where (and when).
Always use the SAME version when repairing permissions, never use an older version OS or of Disk Utility.
CLONE your system. Always have a couple bootable backups.
Choice is Apple Disk Utility Restore; SuperDuper; Carbon Copy Cloner
If a drive does have errors, be ready to restore and have backups on hand if it comes to that.
System (OS and apps) probably only change weekly or even monthly.
You can backup /Users to its own backup partition more often, and use Time Machine plus another method there.
Personally, I tend to run DW directory repair first and sometimes only, and only then check files.
TechTool Pro 5 is what I use for checking files, disk media for weak sectors, and some other problems not covered by Disk Warrior; and, because it can run concurrently on multiple volumes and drives.
It is 'iffy' to verify a live system and get an accurate read of its health, but I'd say Disk Utility is "out of its depths, and league" when it comes to finding and repairing, and for the errors it is encountering on your system.
Isolate the sytem from data and media files and libraries as much as you can and still easy to manage.
Most errors are with system or boot drive.
Radeon X1900 needs to be removed, carefully inspected, and any dust in the vents, air intake portion and exhaust, cleaned out. Right now the only real upgrade there is the ATI 4870 for now (Apple's or flashed). -
Aloha all, I searched but couldn't find any posts that answered my query, so I'm going to try my own post. I'm running 10.5.8 on a G5 Dual 2.3 PPC. I can't seem to figure out why these permissions never get fixed when I run permission repair? Would it be safe to just find and delete them from the library? My machine seems to be running ok, I just run the repair permissions once a month or so out of habit when I do a monthly cleaning etc. Below are the permissions that never get repaired. If anyone out there knows about any of these I'd extremely grateful if you could inform me about them Mahalo, JB

Never received this error until I updated to newer operating system.This sounds vaguely like the Error -49 some people have been getting. It's related to a feature in Time Machine geared towards laptop users who aren't always connected to their Time Machine backup drive.
This requires using the Terminal app, in your Applications/Utilities folder
To turn off Time Machine snapshots type in the following command:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
The Mac will likely ask for your password, so type it in and hit the return key. The type the word, exit and hit return. Quit Terminal.
Open iMovie and try doing another export and see if the same error message pops up. -
Propagate permissions with Server Admin?
Can someone help me change permissions using Server Admin under Mac OS X10.5.7?
I am able to set permissions to a single file or folder, but when I go to propagate the permissions to sub folders and files server admin just hangs. The status bar pops down and spins until I force quit. The permissions never propagate.... This is driving me nuts! ( I could do it by file by file, folder by folder but I have thousands to change.)
Am I doing something wrong? This seemed to work fine in past versions of the OS....

As mentioned, you could simply change the POSIX permissions to 0777 (which grants read and write for the POSIX owner, POSIX group, and POSIX everyone fields). This solution will not apply the same permissions to newly-created files or folders and copied items, however.
This means that you'll have to continue propagating permissions (chmod -R 0777 /example) each time a new file or folder is created or copied. Not fun.
Using an ACL entry that has file_inherit and directory_inherit controls will ensure that the particular ACL entry is inherited to a newly-created or copied file or folder.

10.4.11 breaks .dmg mounting - now I get fsck errors.
I am having problems. About 75% of my .dmg files give me errors.
Many of these .dmg files have been working flawlessly on three computers since the 10.3 days... The others were created more recently (including two which were created using 10.4.11).
But on about 75% of my .dmg files I get this error when I try to open them:
"The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system. Are you sure you want to open this disk image?" and it has two options, "Open" and "Don't Open".
If I chose "Open" it mounts just fine and works just like it used to before 10.4.11. But I get this in my console:
"/sbin/fsck_hfs(/dev/disk2s2) failure for /Users/myUser/Desktop/imac/DiskImages/myDiskImage.dmg.
Dec 31 10:17:52 myComputerName diskimages-helper[1544]: user is overriding fsck failure for myDiskImage.dmg."
If I chose "Don't Open" I get a window that says "Warning. The following disk images failed to mount. Image: myDiskImage.dmg Reason: no mountable file systems" and it presents me with an "OK" button, and I get the same fsck failure message in my console.
This only happens with 10.4.11 and it is happening on two PPC computers and one Intel computer.
This is happening with all sorts of .dmg files, like I mentioned - some were even CREATED WITH 10.4.11!!!
Now - this all works OK if you just need to mount a disk interactively because you can just click "Open" and it works fine. But it completely breaks any scripts I have that mount images automatically (non interactively).
So I am quite frustrated about this...
10.4.11 should be quite mature considering it is the 11th update. I don't see how they could introduce problems like this in such a late update...Hi John,
I've seen a few with the same symptom, but never the option to Open or Not!
I believe it's not so much a bug in 10.4.11 as it is with not doing Permission fixes before & after any update/upgrade... you end up with components from different versions and incompatabilities arise.
Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, (never hurts to verify the HD first), reboot & try it again, if it doesn't work, then try reapplying the big Combo Updates...

IPhoto won't open 9.4.2 and OSX 10.7.5
I'm not sure about when this happened, but I can no longer open iPhoto. It goes to an error log that says "iPhoto Unexpectedly Quit".
Incidently, my Displays, Clock and Icon in the tool bar no longer show up either.
I've tried reinstalling the 10.7.5 update, reinstalling iPhoto, Command+Option at startup of iPhoto, repairing permissions (always shows fixed permissions, never got it to come back clean), repair disk to no avail.
Here is the first 30 or so lines from the log.
Anyone have any ideas?

What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
OSX 10.4.6 Update General Comment

It's obvious that something is wrong with the OSX 10.4.6 update via software update on a number of computers. There are numerous cries for help here all posted in the past couple of days. My Quicksilver crashed, my laptop has not. I appreciate the time and effort of all the responders and hopefully I'll be able to resolve my Quicksilver's gray screen and spinning icon problem on startup when I get my Tiger Family Pack disks.
Something important needs to be communicated to Apple. Many of the experts have said users need to do this or that thing before or after an update, as if it is our fault as consumers of Apple's products that we don't have arcane knowledge. I bought my first Apple in 1985 precisely because I did not want to have to know insider tricks to achieve functionality. I want to write, design, create - not be a system administrator.
If the suggestions being offered are so critical to avoiding crashes and system freezes and the penalty could be total loss of data, then Apple needs to engineer these precautionary steps directly into the update. We should be prompted and led through the necessary steps - or preferably they should be automated right into the software update/installation process.
It's great to be so knowledgeable you can help, but sometimes we should step back and question the big picture. The big picture here is that Apple is remiss in designing a system that is subject to corruption during updates. If there are things we must avoid doing during an update these things can, should, and must be addressed by Apple prior to and as part of the update process.

G4 Silver Mac OS X (10.4.6) stock with extra ramI can only reply with a real world example. My son (23) runs a G4 Dual 450. He never uses disk utility, never repairs permissions, never performs any kind of system maintenance. The machine is on 24/7. He accepts whatever the Software Update panel offers whenever it offers it. And yet he has no problems. He updated to 10.4.6 when it first appeared in Software Update and is running like a champ. He has god-only-knows how many third party gizmos installed too.
I, on the other hand, am almost obsessive-compulsive about system maintenance, running TechTool Pro once a week, disk utility once per week, repair permissions, etc. I have never had any problems with Panther or Tiger in almost two years now.
I can't explain why some have problems while others don't. At work most everyone else is a Windows user and the same things happen. While some are always talking about how this-or-that happened and hosed their computer others say that they never have any problems and that Windows XP is rock solid for them.
The plain reality is that this technology is stupendously, mind-bendingly complicated. Computer makers have been trying for over thirty years now to make them bullet-proof devices like turning on a radio. It ain't happened yet and I don't think it ever will. In my opinion Apple has come the closest to doing it but as long as people keep clamoring for more features and less cost the technology will continue to get even more complicated. Personal computers will never be like toasters. They will always require a fairly high level of knowledge and experience to operate and maintain until the day comes when the device on your desktop is simply a terminal and everything is handled by an online system somewhere that is run by professionals. That day is coming sooner than anyone thinks too.
