Repairing permissions not repairing

I just installed a new 8-core Mac Pro, fresh install of Leopard, plus iLife 09 and a ton of my software.
Am finding this quirk: I repair permissions, and a bunch of "permissions differ" messages come up (most pertaining to Front Row, BackRow, iPhoto Access, and iWork) but if I run it twice in a row, those permissions don't get fixed. I thought Repair Permissions now permanently fixes all permissions (unlike older Mac OS's in which sometimes permissions wouldn't get fixed).
Problem?

Have you really searched these boards for identical issues before posting?
On the right side of this forum is a small window marked "Search Discussions"
It's very hand and obviates repetitive posts.
The answer to your question is no.

I've been digging on this for a while and don't see a relevant answer, so here goes. My ichat stopped working earlier today. Clicking the icon in the menubar says "no account enabled." Now, normally when this happens, I just reboot to the recovery partition, run "repair disk permissions" in disk utility, boot up again and things are grand.
Only, this time, I've run repair permissions about a half-dozen times, and all of the items listed as a problem don't seem to go away. I saw a post somewhere that this was a known java issue that didn't affect anything. However, ichat still says "no account active" so I'm conviced that this is a problem in some regard.
So, how do I repair disk permissions that will not be repaired?

As long as it says 'Permissions Repaired' at the bottom, then they have been repaired. Ignor the continuing list. It really means nothing. I gaurentee you. As for iChat, never used it, sorry.

  • Run permissions, it says repaired, but not repaired. get list of same error every time.

when i run repair permissions, i get a 2 page list of the  same fault in itunes. it than says they were repaired but i get the same thing each time i run it. reinstalled itunes, no help.

I would not be concerned. These are errors generated because the version of Disk Utility you are using or the installed software database do not have information about the files. They will be repeated every time you repair permissions. Just ignore them.

  • Disk utility repair permissions not working in leopard

any ideas why my premissions repair are not working in my new leapoard is there a free phone to apple
because i bought my os x 10.5 from them

Tony, if you think it isn't working because all you see is the blue & white "barber pole" display instead of the all blue progress bar during the repair, rest assured that this is just a display bug & the repair actually is being done. It can take a long time for the repair -- much longer than in Tiger, so be patient -- give it as much as 10 minutes or more to complete & you should see the 'permissions repair complete' message eventually.
If you are seeing something else, my apologies for assuming otherwise. Please describe more about why it isn't working & perhaps we can help you.

  • Disk Permissions not repaired

I run Disk Utility>First Aid>Repair Disk Permission every couple of weeks. Until recently running this utility has cleared all repairs. But now I am getting a list of repairs that doesn't "clear" (meaning that the next time I run Repair Disk Permissions, the same list appears again. This has been associated with iTunes and iPhoto running slower than they have in the past. The list (see below) seems to refer mostly to Front Row, iTunes and iPhoto. Please advise if you know what's going on and how to fix it. Here is the list:

    Permissions repair complete

I have exactly the same issue. I have 100 plus of those same errors showing up all involving iPhoto, iTunes & Front Row. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of the errors. Doing an archive & install is a last resort for me. I have not yet tried the 10.5.6 combo reinstall yet either.
What I have done so far:
1.Soft boot repair permissions & restarting.
2.Regular boot or restart, repaired permissions and restarting.
3.Ran the install disc verify disk and repair permissions settings. Disk results are always green - no problems. The exact same errors show up on the disc when repairing permissions & remain there without disappearing
4.Ran Diskwarrior. All green. Graph 0% out of order.
    5.Ran Techtool Deluxe. All clear.
I never get the permissions has been repaired. It's always, permissions repair completed. Well, what exactly did it complete? Sure isn't repairing.
I am going to give Apple Care a call. I paid for it, might as well get my monies worth!! Will post their solution here _*IF IT WORKS.*_

  • Permissions not repairing with Disk Utility

I booted off my internal backup drive to run Disk Utilities on my main drive as I've been having some display problems and wanted to check for viruses and check the integrity of my drive. No viruses, disc verifies OK, but I had a lot of permissions needing repair, which I did.
I then cleared history and ran Verify Permissions again and even though the repair said all permissions were repaired except the last SUID file, these 7 came back. I ran repair again. Disk Utility said all except SUID were repaired like before. Ran verify again and they same 7 plus SUID showed up needing the same repairs Disk Utility said it fixed twice before.
Is this indicative of a serious problem? Any ideas how to fix them? Do I even need to?
    Have MacPro1,1 - Running OSX 10.6.7, 8 GB RAM
    Thanks,

Thanks re permissions. I was going to try DiskWarior, to see if it could repair them, but won't now.
For viruses I ran MacScan. Only found some tracking cookies and removed them.

  • Permissions not repairing

    Hi,
Setting up my wife's new mac mini today. used setup assistant to transfer users and settings from my mbp running 10.4.11 which was updated and permissions repaired before doing anything. i did transfer everything, applications, users, files, etc. (maybe i shouldn't have done the apps) anyway, things seemed to go smoothly.
    then...
repaired permissions on mini before taking software updates--ok
    took software updates, restarted--ok
repaired permissions again and there was a ton to fix.
did followup repair to see if all were caught. but they weren't.
repaired again. but now keep getting the same results over and over.
    three are related to system/library/frameworks/java...
comes back saying those three are repaired.
also get five "Warning SUID file ....... has been modified and will not be repaired.
after repeated attempts i keep getting the same results, whether i do restarts in between or not. i figure sooner or later these bad permissions will come back to bite me if i don't get it fixed. suggestions? should i start over, erase and install but this time without the apps.

    BB623 wrote:
What causes these to be issues in the first place?
The short answer is the cause is differences in the permissions database the process compares to the item's actual metadata. Permissions can be "repaired" only in the sense that they can be reset to what is in the database when the two differ.
So for instance, if an OS or application update doesn't update the database as well as the item itself, you get a message telling you about that. It isn't an error in the item, just in the database, & the process is smart enough not to "fix" the item … which actually would be an error!

  • Repair permissions not really working...

Hi guys so I'm performing some periodic maintenance on my mac and discovered that even when I run disk utility to repair permissions and it reports to have done so, when I run it again right after it repairs the exact same permissions it said I had just repaired...
Whats going on here? Do I need to repair permissions while not booted into the drive?TIA

i understand that it is not causing me trouble now, but I would like to fix what I can fix (if I should) to prevent bigger problems in the future... thats all.
the link you shared with me does not directly apply to my situation. Im not getting the exact same reports that that article is talking about. unless you're telling me to just assume my situation falls in the same class as the situations in that article.

  • Permissions repair will not repair?

    Hello,
I was running permissions repair across my laptop's HD this morning and got this message:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Is this a problem or something I need to be worried about?  What is the "ARDAgent" file and what does it do?
    Thanks for your help!
    Andrew.

It's just a message and not a problem. You can safely ignore it. Unless you are having a problem running Repair permissions is unnecessary.

  • To repair or not repair, permissions that is?!?

I'm planning to update to SL and have been reading discussions about a recommendation to repair permissions before and after the update. Does this sound correct? and if so how do I do this?
    Thank you for your time.

    yes.
and if so how do I do this?
open Disk Utility, select your main hard drive and click "repair permissions". But MUCH more important is to make a full backup before upgrading. repairing permissions is extremely minor compared to having a backup.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Repair permissions keeps repairing same items

Hey gang.  I've developed a lot of problems with my Mac Pro that I'm trying to track down.  One issue is that when I repair permissions on the startup disk, I get about 20 items repaired, but if I run the app again, it seems to repair the same items all over.  Here's a sample:
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/ Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar".
Also, I get a warning that I've never seen before:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I wouldn't be so concerned if I wasn't having intermittent kernal panics as well as some problems opening files.  Any thoughts?

Some permissions are information only and can be ignored.
Focus on the panics which are usually hardware devices and drivers, cables, etc and sometimes RAM or other items.

  • Repair Permissions keeps repairing the same files

Whenever I repair permissions, I notice the same files are being repaired all the time. Is their a problem and how can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Hattori Hanzo

    Hi, Hattori.
    This is not a probelm.
The list of permission repairs is quite extensive under Tiger. This is due to the Repair Disk Permissions function forcing the specific permissions it reports, which is required due to the receipts of the affected files, most of which are Dashboard widgets. Most Dashboard widgets have specific permissions — ostensibly to avoid potential security problems with widgets — and Repair Disk Permissions will always set these to ensure they are enforced, whether or not they actually need repair.
Whenever the message in Repair Disk Permissions states "We are using special permissions..." this means the permissions are being enforced, not that the permissions on that file were necessarily incorrect.
Bottom line: you can ignore these "We are using special permissions...." messages. They will repeat whenever you run Repair Disk Permissions.
For additional information, see "Disk Utility reports some messages that you can ignore when checking permissions ('33261')."
    Good luck!

There are lot of things behind the scenes that change permissions, things that only the engineers know.
And they are not necessarily errors . . . They're more like notations.
At the end of your messages, does it say, "Repair permissions complete?"
If so, you're fine.  You can ignore them.
You should only be concerned if it says "Repair Permissions could not be completed."

  • Permission repair will not repair

    Folks....
A few weeks ago, I noticed that running permission repair from the HD I have booted from will not repair permissions. I have pages and pages of un repaired permissions. I booted to my Leopard DVD and ran permission repair from it and have the same issue.
I ran disk repair from the Leopard DVD and it said my HD was fine.
Suggestions? Maybe a 3rd party software package? Any shareware/freeware I might try first. I would hate to spend the money on Tech Tools Pro if it would not fix it. I started getting squirrely things happening, and freeze ups. But other then bad permissions, I can not find any thing wrong.
    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.
    jack

OK, Here is what I see when I try to do permission repairs. I am happy to hear you say some are not so bad. In the past, the OS fixed all of them. I was taught to run permission repair after each now software install. Maybe that is not correct?

  • Disk repair is not repairing safari?

I saw a message that a site I looked at via google news was invalid and since I already had my previous computer hacked I thought I would check this one. I ran ClamXav and it just told me I had 11 errors, the previous days no errors. I proceeded to use disk utility and it found a few things and repaired all but one. I reverified and tried to repair again and still this particular error is not repairing. I checked a chart of ignorable errors and this frankly was not on it. Is there a way to get disk utility to fix it or do I need to run it into genius bar?
Im not taking any chances as I have software on the system for work and it glitches if the slightest thing is errored out in the permissions folder even for non related things.
My system is MacbookPro 13in not Retina and 10.9.3
Here is the last series I read from disk permissions:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”
    Permissions repair complete
    Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Anyone have a solve this since the disc repair obviously did not repair it after running over it several times?

Not sure exactly what you mean by errors. If they show up in your Scan Log, then they almost always involved files that you don't have read access to.
If they were errors during Definitions Update there will be more in your Update Log and are usually network related.
If they were infections then I would need to know the infection name and exact location of the file in order to be able to advise you on those.
To get detailed infomation on what ClamXav has found, after completing the scan, click in the top pane of the ClamXav window where it shows the Infection / File Name / Status to make sure it's in front and type the key combinations <command>-A, <command>-C (or choose "Select-All", "Copy" from the "Edit" menu) to copy the information to your clipboard, then come back here and type <command>-V or choose "Paste" to show us what was found where.
