Repairing start up disk from within disk utiltity no longer an option

When I first upgraded to 10.4, I could repair the startup volume from within disk utility, now, that button is greyed out and no longer an option!
Any thoughts?
thanks

Methinks you are mistaken. You could not verify or repair the boot volume using Disk Utiltiy prior to 10.4.3. In 10.4.3 and later, you can verify it, but need to enable journaling. See <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672> for details.

  • Mac Pro starts up only from Install Disk

The Mac Pro will not start up from any internal or bootable external disk. The spinning progress wheel just goes on forever.
When I connect those same disks to my laptop - either directly or via target mode - they will start up and operate the laptop without a problem.
The Mac Pro lets me install the system from the install disk onto an internal had drive, but will not start up from that drive.
When attempting to format an internal disk from the install disk, the computer freezes after about 6 minutes.
Upon pressing the start button, the chime and gray screen are there almost instantly, but it takes an awful long time for the Apple logo and progress wheel - or the drive symbols when starting up with the option key pressed down - to appear.
Could this be corrupted firmware? And if yes, how do I replace it on a machine that doesn't start up?
But then, the freezing when attempting to format a drive from the install disk happens after a mild flash brightened the monitors ever so briefly. Seems to indicate a hardware problem.

Start with Zapping the Pram. Then, run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests at least twice. If the problem persists, it's time to call AppleCare or carry it into an Apple repair station.

make sure you have the superdrive right side up, the rubber feet should be facing downward. also make sure the disc you are trying to play is a compatible format.
also open your finder preferences and make sure you have checked to show items on the desktop and within the finder window.

    Hi ,
As group_number of that disk is 0 ,it is not part of any mounted diskgroup in your system .
So,you cannot drop that disk .
May be sometime back due to some issue that disk was evicted ,but was not dropped properly ,so disk header still holds old diskgroup information.
    kfed read <device_name>|egrep "kfbh.type|kfdhdb.hdrsts|kfdhdb.grpname"
above command will tell you the cause of MEMBER
    To reuse that disk,
-- Validate same disk having similar status on all nodes of this cluster
-- if So,then to overwrite that disk header ,use FORCE option to create/add it into any existing diskgroup.

  • Disk Utility says HD needs repair-how to boot from original disk?

    Hi,
My iMac has been acting up badly. Finally on Friday, it had trouble turning on and a burning smell arose from the top. Came on but with the blinking folder with question mark. So turned it off and tried again to turn on: no chime and couldn't turn it on.
Went to Genius bar this a.m. Tried different cord. It turned on. Everything came up fine. Genius ran special test. Everything came back with green check. But he said the internal hard drive could very likely be starting to fail.
Back home. Just ran the Disk Utility to "Verify." It couldn't continue verification. Got these messages:
    Invalid volume directory count.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Questions:
    1) Can I repair using the First Aid utility (or is it more about getting a new HD)?
    2) If so, can someone remind me what keys to press on startup to boot from the CD?
    3) I have 10.5.8 right now. Can I still boot from the original Tiger installation CD and use that Disk Utility?
Thanks for your urgently needed help!

If you're on 10.5.8 have you not got that disk as that would probably be the best one to use? If not, the disk that came with your Mac should still boot up. Disk in drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. Hopefully it'll boot - albeit slowly. At the multi-language screen choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD on the left and 'repair disk'. Hopefully it'll do the necessary repairs. If it fixes anything click 'repair disk' again until you get a clean pass and then from the Apple menu restart as normal.
If you haven't got a backup make sure you make one ASAP.

  • QUESTION: Running 'repair disk' from installation disks.........

    Hi
I am trying to learn the basics of OS maintenance.........
    1 question.........
A commonly described maintenance procedure is :
...Booting from the original O S disk that came with the computor and selecting disk utility off that disk, in order to run a 'repair disk' operation.
My question is this: my original installation disk-set is O S X 10.3 . However i have updated to OS X 10.3.9 via the internet in several steps... Once an update to 10.3.?, then 10.3.8 and fianally 10.3.9.
Can i still use the 'disk utility' 'repair disk' procedure from the original disk which is only 10.3 , if i have updated the OS to 10.9 via the internet ? If not, how do i do a 'repair disk' procedure from disk utility ?
    thanks for your time.....

First of all, Welcome to the Discussions!
re: "I repaired permissions using Install CD, I think it's the first version of Panther"
Not to fret, but I would return to your HD>Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility and repair permissions from there. This should have updated permissions that will take care of the new permissions that need to be set for the update increments in the OS since your initial 10.3 install.
As for the symptoms you are seeing, ie. no startup chime, black screen for seconds and hum I would return to the Disk Utility on the install disk #1 and run Repair Disk. Report back any errors it finds.
Does your computer have a Apple Hardware Test CD? If so you may wish to run this to check for any damage it will report.
As for Anacron, CacheOutX, PreferentialTreatment what features of these do you run? Clearing the Caches with CacheOutX for example should only be run for troubleshooting and not general maintenance of the OS.
A very good FAQ by Dr. Smoke for maintenance can be found here.
    Hope that helps some,

  • 27" iMac freezes, but mouse moves. 10.6.8. For 2 days, same error with volume info. Repaired disk from install disk twice.

Here's more info. Bought the iMac in Nov. 2009. It's been one with lots of problems, including a new mother board. Haven't had any big troubles lately until now. The exact error is:
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 888333 instead of 888334)
    Invalid volume directory count
(Should be 221900 instead of 221899)
These were the only error messages. I did use Disk Utility to repair the disk, twice in two days.
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i%
    12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    (219.55 GB available)
I'm not sure what else would be helpful to know.
Can someone tell me what's up, please?
    Thanks! Jane

It would appear Disk Utility cannot repair the problem. This is not a big problem, but fixing it will require you to purchase and use Disk Warrior. Alternatively, you can backup your files, erase the drive, reinstall Snow Leopard, then restore your files.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • HELP required! Cannot boot leopard, cannot repair disk from install disk

While my Macbook was indexing the hard drive (leopard 10.5.4), it froze and I was forced to force shut down the laptop. After doing that, it would not boot up. It stayed at the gray screen with the Apple logo and rolling ball and the laptop eventually shut down after 10 minutes or so.
I have attempted to boot from my Leopard Install DVD and tried disk repair but I could not do so because the buttons were "grayed out" and I could not click them. The only button that can be clicked is "verify disk". I tried doing so and it resulted in many errors.
I also tried booting in single user command mode (CMD+S) and typed in fsck -fy but it could not repair my disk.
As a last resort, I have tried to reinstall a fresh copy of OS X but it says that I need to wipe out my whole hard drive before doing so. I have so data that I have put on my Macbook in the last week and would like to recover it before re-installing OS X. Is there any way to do so?
My most favorable outcome would be to fix the problem and avoid reinstalling OS X (if possible). Any suggestions?

Without a bootable backup/clone or a TimeMachine restorable file, you're out of luck unless you pop for DiskWarrior and try to fix your file directory (no guarantees, but it works for many).

  • Start host process from within guest OS

I am using VMWare Workstation 10.
Some of my vm's are dedicated to compiling code using CruiseControl.NET.
What I am attempting to do is add a step that automates testing a completed setup on several clean virtual machines. From what I can see, the guest OS will be required to 'announce' to the host OS that a build has completed and then launch a process to revert the virtual machines, start the virtual machines and then launch a process that does the following:
Copy the setup.exe from a known location to a directory on the virtual machine
Launch the setup.exe with parameters from a command line
    Wait for setup.exe to finish
Launch an automated testing tool to validate basic functionality of the application.
Wait for automated testing to complete
    Shut down the virtual machines
    Wait for next successful build
I am attempting to work on this problem using vmrun.exe within a powershell script. With this script I can successfully revert virtual machines, start and stop virtual machines.
What I am trying to work out is how to pass data from CruiseControl.net in the guest operating system to the host operating system. So I am turning to this community to see if anyone here has any ideas?
I have not read of any ideas of communication from the guest to the host while there is a 'host' <yeah, pun is intended> of information of sending info from the host to the guest. Note that the guest OS does not have VMWare Workstation installed, nor is it desirable to do this.
My initial thoughts, even as I write this question, is that all of the guest OS build machines map a drive to the host. At the end of of a successful build the setup is copied to a directory and a sentinel file is updated with information. The host OS will have CruiseControl.net installed and will monitor for file changes for the sentinel file. When changed then it will start the automated testing process.
Is there a better way to accomplish this goal?
    I appreciate any suggestions.
    Sincerely,

    >I guess I was expecting VPC to work like Remote Desktop, where you would automatically see the host drives listed in Windows Explorer ("C on hostname", "D on hostname", etc).
It really should, but there's a RDP update that messes up this
    functionality.
    >Edit 2: I've just set up a mapped drive, but it seems very unreliable. It gets slower and slower as I "drill down" through folders on the host, and right-clicking a file to copy it to the guest causes Windows Explorer to hang, and never
shows the context menu. I've tried uninstalling IS from the guest and re-installing/enabling it, but it made no difference. Thoughts?

You shouldn't do it. You have to erase the Windows volume with Boot Camp Assistant, so it will restore the space onto the OS X volume and that volume will have 750 GB.
As you did it with Disk Utility, you have to resize your OS X partition manually:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, and go to Partition tab.
    2. You will see a bar with Macintosh HD. You have to click it at the bottom right corner and drag it to the end of the bar, so Macintosh HD will use all the space of the hard drive, and press Apply.
    3. Close Disk Utility and your OS X partition will have 750 GB
