Repartition disk and reimport the whole system

Hi everyone,
I have a working Arch Install and I love it. The only problem is that I need to repartition my HDD. The partition scheme is just slightly different. One partition that is now logical will be primary and most partitions (except one) will be slightly larger but that's it.
Meanwhile I need to reinstall Windows (I have a dual boot), then "copy/paste" my whole Arch system back and reinstall GRUB. For now I can think of a few problems.
1) If I reinstall GRUB from a live CD (would it work with Arch's install CD ?), will pacman still handle updates for it ?
2a) A friend advised me to use rsync to copy ALL of my system to an external HDD (I have JFS and ext2/3 partitions) and then use rsync again to recover my system (I was thinking of using a JFS external hard drive). Is it a good idea ? Will this keep all the needed metadata (privileges and such) ? Will it preserve symlinks ? hardlinks ?
2b) Is rsyncing really better than just copy-pasting all files ?
3) I guess I'll have to change my /etc/fstab once I have repartitioned, are there any other files to edit when I have my new partition scheme ?
4) How can I check that nothing has been broken/corrupted in the process ?
Are there "better"/alternative ways to do what I want (Repartition disk, reinstall Windows and get back my whole Arch system) ? What other problems could I encounter ?
Thank you in advance for your answers and sorry for my English (it is not my first language).

Should be fine. Grub doesn't change that often, and I don't think I've ever needed to re-do grub-install because of an update.

Yes, yes, and yes. However, so will cp -a. If you're just using an external drive attached to your local system to do this, cp -a should be fine.
yms wrote:2b) Is rsyncing really better than just copy-pasting all files ?
If you're copying to a separate machine over a network, I prefer rsync. It's easier than net-mounting the target drive and then copying to it, and network filesystems have a way of sometimes mangling ownership & permissions, depending what your setup is. This doesn't apply in your case though.
One caution about just copy&pasting your filesystem (not sure if this still applies with current udev, actually) -- you can't boot with a totally empty /dev. Copying all of the device entries from a booted, mounted /dev/ into your backup and then copying them back works fine, but it's probably better to do this:
mount -o bind / /mnt/temp-root
cp -a /mnt/temp-root/dev /your-backup-root/dev
umount /mnt/temp-root
That'll give you the device entries that are actually in your root filesystem's /dev, before /dev gets mounted on top of it.
yms wrote:3) I guess I'll have to change my /etc/fstab once I have repartitioned, are there any other files to edit when I have my new partition scheme ?
crypttab, if you have any encrypted partitions. /etc/suspend.conf if you're using userspace suspend (it'll need to know the new swap partition to resume from after s2disk). mdadm.conf if you have software RAID and are using that. Likewise for stuff in /etc/lvm (possibly).
yms wrote:4) How can I check that nothing has been broken/corrupted in the process ?
On your current system:
find / -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum >> /big-file-checksum-list
When you've got everything copied back:
find / -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum >> /big-file-checksum-list2
Then sort those two files and compare them.

Some things I ran into while installing Windows 7:
- Win7 has a separate 100MB boot partition. As far as I know, it's not easy to pick an existing partition and tell it, "this is your boot partition." I just let the installer create it for me.
- Win7 does not obey some partition table conventions -- I can't edit my partition table with cfdisk because Windows 7 apparently got some disk geometry slightly wrong (You know that 8mb of free space that XP & NT used to leave at the end of disks? I don't think they've fixed that yet). fdisk, parted, and sfdisk are all OK though.
Edit: one of the Win7 problems turned out to be something else; removed it.

It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0

As long as one of the drivers gets loaded, which it apparently does the failing of the others is fine.
Was there an update maybe ?

  • If I connect one or two ext HD to my MacBook, does TiCaps backup and update the whole system?

I would like to organize my new MacBookPro in this way: an external HD for my photographs, another for my music and documents on internal HD.
I am going to buy Time Capsule to back up the whole system. Might it work? Thank you all.

In addition to Kappy's comments, you will need to insure that the hard drive is formatted correctly to work with Time Machine and the Time Capsule.
That would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Unless the hard drive is specifically sold for use with Macs, it will probably be pre- formatted for Windows, so you will need to use Disk Utility to format the drive before you use it.
Disk Utility is located as follows: Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility

  • Adressbook on new MacBookPro with 10.67 very very slow and so the whole system...help please?!

I already deleted intelligent groups, deleted half of the contacts, deleted preferences and reimported contacts after deleting and so on....no clue the addressbook is slowing the whole system down it seems. What to do?

Nope, it came with the upgrade to 10.7.2.
I've also tried to reinstall Lion yesterday. Nothing changed.
I've not visited the Cisco support site but I did a bit of search and it seems that nobody, except me, has this problem.
Certificates in the keychain file?! I'm just browsing to facebook on https for example... Don't know what you mean exactly with certificates. But anyway, this is not the problem, rather I think that this is just a part of the bigger problem. ;-)
At home each SSL secured website works pretty good.

  • When I try to read my rss-feed through yandex service, the browser and the whole system freeze for a significant amount of time. This started with Firefor 5 and is very unpleasant. Thank you in advance.

When I try to download (and especially renew) a page with my rss-feed that I read with Yandex service, the browser freezes, and then the whole system freezes. It typically takes about 5-7 minutes to load a very minimalistic page, and I can't use my browser or my system during that time.
This started with the release of Firefox 5. I use it on Ubuntu. I haven't experienced similar problems with any other websites.
I have already contacted the Yandex team about the matter.
I guess it's just a little weird that one of the Yandex services won't work in Firefox, as Firefox comes with a built-in yandex-bar in many cases. And it sure is frustrating.
Thank you very much and I am looking forward to your reply.

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

Where do I go from here??????

If you upgraded from 3.6 to 5 (you didn't indicate buying 4.4) then you will need the serial number from 3.6 in order to be able to use 5.  If you did not keep a record of it there is a chance it might be available thru your Adobe account online, but if not, there is likely not much you can do except to return the upgrade and purchase a full version.  Try contacting support using chat and explain your situation to see if they can help.

If you did purchase 4.4 then that should be sufficient to use to activate 5.
I can never be sure what goes on with Lightroom, and the Adobe site (even when it works properly) makes finding information about products difficult these days so I am at a loss to confirm anything I say.

  • Installing x11 without installing the whole system?

I did not install x11 when I installed Tiger on my Mac G5. I have now, via a number of updates, moved to version 10.4.10.
Sadly, when I insert my system install disk it will not let me install x11 without installing the whole system. That is a risky and impractical situation at this point.
Is there a way to install x11 without installing a whole new system?

On the Installer Disc One there is an installer named 'Optional Installs.' You can install the X11 software from that package without reinstalling OS X.

  • Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.

Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.
I've read numerous threads with this Safari pinwheeling theme, but none of the posted solutions I've found work for me.
    The problem:
Safari will almost always on opening, and frequently when filling in forms on websites, start pinwheeling. The whole system then slows down, and then eventually freezes. Even the dock bar freezes. When this happens, I can't even bring up the Force Quit bar. The freezing will often last several minutes, then all of a sudden, all my various previously ignored mouse and key clicks cycle through. When Force Quit finally starts, then everything freezes again. Eventually, Force Quit will show Safari as not responding, and once in a while the system then will start responding, but usually I have to kill Safari.
The problem subsided a little bit on the opening the application problem when I switched my start page from Apple.com to Google.com, thinking that maybe it was just too much graphics crap coming in on the Apple site.
The problem happens on both my Airport and cell modem network connections.
I may have seen this behavior once with Firefox, but haven't been able to reproduce it.
Generally I only have a few things running: Excel, Messenger, Safari.
Things I've tried to fix this:
    Reset Safari
    Clear Safari Cache
Delete Safari folder in the system cache folder
Went into the Energy Saver in Preferences and unchecked, "put disk to sleep when not in use" for both the battery and power adpater settings
    Limit number of tabs open
I'd try restarting Safari occasionally, but the problem usually happens on opening.
I've emptied the trash, and made sure there is ample open disk space (10gb right now).
    Resolved duplicate fonts.
I have no third party apps to affect Safari or networking.
I've reset the machine by unplugging it and holding the power button.
My computer is a MacBookPro 15" with all the latest software and firmware updates and 2gb RAM. This has become so frustrating, it's been very tempting to just throw the laptop at the wall and go back to my Windows laptop...

I'd say the bad blocks were behind the problems you were seeing. Their existence points to either a defective HD, or directory corruption. The latter usually can be repaired by using a Utility such as Disk Warrior, or as you did, reformatting the drive.
Best approach to minimizing directory problems is to do routine maintenance twice a month. Have a look at this MacWorld article for suggestions.
For routine maintenance I use OnyX. There is no charge for the software, but I believe the developer asks for a donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, you would select "automation". The panel looks like this:
Select the same items I have checked. The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is, don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer and you're good to go.
Lastly, the most effective maintenance is having a full backup of your system on an external hard drive. All machines fail eventually, despite the best maintenance. If you had a hard drive failure without any backup, then you would lose all your information, including documents, images, songs, etc. Not a pretty picture.
For your system, you would purchase either a USB or Firewire Drive for your new Intel Machine. The key here is creating a "clone" backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or at least once a week. For the backup process I use SuperDuper. Very easy to use. The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent backups take 5 to 10 minutes. Total $$$ investment can be anywhere between $100 - $250 depending on the size of your Hard Drive.
Post back if you need any other information relative to your questions here.

  • Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD

    Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.
    Regards,
    Iwan

Start by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup.  If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • How can I back up the whole system?

I want to try re-install the whole system because some software do not work properly, especially gcc-software but I really need it for my work and I don't know what to do, I tried everything and I think that the only one solution is to be like a Windows-users and to re-install the whole system. But I would like to have an opportunity to get back my system in case of it will not work.
Can I use something to back up my system?

Use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to create a clone on an external drive.

  • Creating a Master virtual hard disk and using the same for all other VM's

    Hi,
We would like to create a master virtual hard disk and use the same for all other VM's. Can we do that ?
    my requirements :
    1) create 10 VM's
    2) first create a master virtual hard disk with win OS and use the same to create the 10 VM's.
    3) After creating the VM's change the HDD size.
-- if i have created master virtual disk with 500GB , and use the same for creating a virtual machine. can we change the HDD size to 1TB ?
After creating the VM's ,i will change the system names and activate the windows accordingly.
Will there be any implications ,if we can/will do like this.
    Thanks.

  • To reinstall the whole system using the recovry cd

    Product: Notebook Toshiba tecra A4.
As the system files were corrupted i tried to recover the whole system. After inserting the recovery cd and copying the files i removed the cd and restart the computer. It comes up to the field where i have to give the computer a name. At this moment it freezes. No reaction at all. I reaptedly tried and waited each time up to 20 to 30 minutes. there is no responce at all. how can i fix this proble?

It is very strange because units and recovery procedure are tested before the units are delivered. If you didn?t change Hardware configuration and you se it without any external devices you should clarify this with your local dealer or with Toshiba authorized service partner directly. Call them and explain the situation.
I don?t know how old your unit is but if there is some serious problem the valid warranty will cover the repair costs.
Sorry pam but I am really out of idea.
Anyway good luck and if you find out what the problem is please let us know because your issue is really individual case on Tecra thread.
