Repartition HFS+ drive

I keep getting an error when attempting to resize the partition on my external Western Digital My Book hard drive which is formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS+). I'm trying to split the single partition into two equal partitions so as two keep one strictly for Time Machine. Though the error stops Disk Utility from resizing the partition into two as it wants it to be Mac OS Extended which the partition already is and the new partition is set to also be. Has anyone else experienced this?

Resolved this issue using a third party application called iPartition which is supported on OS X Leopard.

  • Yoga 11 Windows RT - "Repartition the drive" Problem

    Hey all,
I updated my Lenovo ideapad yoga 11 (without making a recovery usb) to windows rt 8.1 preview & as almost everyone is getting the activation issue on tablets, same issue came on mine. so i tried to downgrade from RT 8.1 to RT 8 (which i have already done on one windows surface pro successfully). during the process i accidentally "Repartition the drive". windows was downgrade to RT 8 and running smoothly but half of the drivers were not installed (including Wifi).
In disk management i can see four partitions:
350mb Healthy (Recovery Partition), 200mb Healthy (EFI System Partition), Windows (C: ) 54.06 GB NTFS, 3.52 GB Healthy (Recovery Partition)
Only windows (c: ) partition is accessible and rest of them are inaccessible, hidden & showing only in disk management.
Is there a way to fix this problem. i.e undo repartition the drive or accessing the recovery partition or Lenovo ideapad yoga 11 recovery image
    Thanks

  • Imovie5 +   sparse disk  +    HFS+ drive  = damaged footage?

    Can anyone help with this?
I saved many small imovie projects with imovie5 inside a single sparse file which I could easily copy to a partitioned external drive. The partition was HFS+.
The first time I opened the sparse file off the HFS+ drive, I got the message: "the project was saved on an older version of imovie. Opening it will..."
None of that is true. What seems to have happened is the imovie projects, and the mov and wav files inside were corrupted either by the sparse file or the HFS+ drive, or both together. Maybe sparse files were incompatible with HFS+ drives...
The mov and wav files are unreadable. Is there anyway to rescue / convert them?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that. I reckon that is the reason. So do you reckon the whole content of the imovie projects ia corrupted. They appear as files but can't be previewed or opened. Do you know of any software that could read or convert these movs? What a bummer, eh: Apple especially offering HFS+, and sparse files, but, without warning, they're incompatible. It's almost like the computer's hard drive being incompatible with some of the programs that come with the computer." Lol

  • Getting error -36 while copying from mac HD to usb HFS+ drive

    Hi
first off, id did google this stuff.. but couldn't find a solution. i tried all the dot_clean stuff without result.
i'm running the latest update of snow leopard 10.6.7
    so here's the situation:
i've got this 1TB FAT32 usb-drive filled with backups that i wanted to re-format to HFS+ so i could fit files >4GB on it. So i backed up that backups to some other USB drives (HFS+ formatted) and formatted the 1TB to HFS+ using disk utility.
After formatting, I start to refill the newly formatted 1TB HFS+ from the other HFS+ drives...
and always, after copying about 90GB my 1TB starts making noises like it's trying to read/write something to/from the disk. short typical HD-activity sounds quickly following each other. this continues for about 30s and after that i get the error -36.. the disk is then 'unproperly removed'. when i remount the 1TB afterwards, it acts like nothing's happened. the 90 GB of files that were written to it before the crash are still there and readable, a can even create a new folder on the drive but as soon as i try to write say a 1GB file to the drive BANG some stuff.. that horrid -36...
I've already used the dot_clean command on all the folders i backed up from the 1TB, I can't seem to find any .._DSstore files..
I am starting to think this might be a hardware related problem..?
    thanks so much in advance

First, check that the USB cables are securely seated at both ends. If possible, use different cables; if not, switch the cables between drives.
Is the 1 TB drive partitioned in GUID format? You determine this by selecting the drive icon (above the volume icon) in Disk Utility, and looking at the bottom of the window for the "Partition Map Scheme." If not, partition it in that format. Erase the HFS volume with the option of writing zeros to it ("Security Options..."). This will cause any bad sectors on the drive to be mapped out. It will take much longer than a simple formatting. Then run Verify or Repair Disk on the other USB drive.
Try the copying operation again. If you still get error -36, then either the enclosure or the mechanism of the 1 TB drive has failed -- almost certainly not both.

  • HFS drive not supported

I have just downloaded CS2 illustrator for Mac to replace my windows version but message says that it can't be installed onto HFS drive as not supported what does this mean and how do I rectify this?

    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads
Adobe no longer supports AI CS2.
HFS (not plus, or +, or OS X Extended) is also a very old system format. HFS was introcuced in early 1998. Thanks, Wikipedia.  :+)

  • Non HFS drive?

I'm trying to install illustrator on my MacBook Pro, but it's saying it can't install on a non HFS drive. How do I get illustrator to work?

I'm pretty sure it's Mac OS X 10.7.3, that's what it says at least.
I just got the laptop and I'm not very good with computers, so I just needed some help.
    Thanks again.

  • External HFS drive with bootcamp+XP OS networked to XP PC, is it possible?

Using a current G5 iMac intel or G5 pro Intel. Has anyone configured an external apple HFS drive running Bootcamp to plug into a dedicated XP Platform? Does the drive need to match the platform bit rate? It would be great to plug in the 2.5in external HFS Drive and use bootcamp + XP OS on dedicated XP platform and be able to use it. There must be many issues. This raises many questions! Has anyone succeeded?

As I am testing and measuring the bootcamp issue, I will try before posting the solution, MacDrive 6, from Majick on the metafile forum below. http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/bootcamp.asp

  • When I try and install CS2 on OS Mountain Lion is saying I have a Non HFS drive

When I try and install CS2 on OS Mountain Lion is saying I have a Non HFS drive but I have!

    I doubt it as well.
You might however be able to migrate the install from another drive that it is already installed on.
What you can try is to partition another drive ebven an external one and install a previous version of the Mac OS and then install CS2 and see if you can migrate it to the 10.8 drive.
Even if you do do not be surprised if you cannot run it. zThe only other possibility would then see if there is a hack that will allow you to run earlier versions of certain software on the Mac OS 10.8.

  • HFS driver Stop working suddenly (Paragon on Bootcamp)

Hello guys, I defragment my Bootcamp partition using Disk Fragmenter in windows Bootcamp. All was good at that time, My Paragon HFS for Windows v10.0 was working perfectly. But as soon as I restart my macbook and Boot to Bootcamp, Windows ask me to format the MAC OS X partition before use. I thought there may be some problem with that parttion so I connected my External Seagate 1 TB (900 GB NTFS and 100GB HFS for Time Machine) And again It shows same format notice for the 100GB HFS partition of my external. I restart and Boot to MAC OS X, there Everything is fine. I use Repair Disk option for all my disks using Disk utility but there was no problem at all.I understood that there must be problem with HFS driver installed in windows. So, I uninstall it restart and I can see my HFS partition but at read only mode.I download the 10.2 version from Paragon Site and enter serial and I restart it again same problem appears. I do not get this point How suddenly it stops working in Bootcamp?
Although Paragon NTFS for windows which I installed in MAC OS X is working fine.
    Please help me out.

    Hello again Capri302,
It is good to hear from you again!
Since you have attempted all of the documents posted above with no success, I will need to ask you a few questions in regards to changing the power settings on your system:
Were you able to run programs (like a video game) using the "run as administrator" in the past?
Does the powercfg process work if you log into a different user account?
Have you tried using a different HDMI, or DVI cable to your monitor?
Please re-post with the necessary information, this way I will be able to research this further for you. I look forward to your reply!

  • OK to repartition external drive w/data using Disk Utility (split in two)?

My Time Machine backup folder on my 500GB external drive just kept growing and growing, nearly filling the drive (which I use for other things). I read that one way to limit Time Machine's appetite is to point it to a partition that is only so big. (Apple: There should be a setttig for this in Control Panel.)
So, I've made 150GB of space on the external drive by deleting the old Time Machine backup folder (this is just for a few minutes, what are the odds the my MBP drive will die? I would like to create a new partition on the drive of, say, 125GB (for the the 100GB drive in my MBP). Then point Time Machine at it...
But I'm a little nervous to do this, since partitioning drives has historically led to significant pain and suffering. I've read that Disk Utility can repartition external drives, with data on them, safely. Is this true? Anyone have experience in this? Thanks.
    ...Rene

    Rene,
No, you cannot dynamically re-partition that one, without first destroying all the data on it by making an initial partition of the entire drive (actually, a new partition map will often be written with a simple format of the drive, but that still destroys all data). In fact, the "Master Boot Record" (MBR) is a Windows thing, and prevents a few Mac functions.

  • How should I backup a hfs  drive with rsync from ubuntu?

    Hi
I have to backup a hfs+ drive from a ubuntu machine using rsync on ubuntu (i.e., NOT the mac-rsync).
Issues: Apparently ubuntu can handle hfs+ devices only if journaling is disabled. My target device will then be a hfs+ device with journaling disabled.
The source hfs+ device on the mac however has journaling enabled: It hosts the iphoto-library among other things.
Questions: Can I backup the contents of the source device onto the target even if this one has journaling enabled? The goal of course is to be able
to copy back the iphoto-library in usable form, in case of problems with the source disk.
Is is mandatory that the target is hfs+ (journaled or not) only for the purpose of backup of iphoto-library?
If the above is possible, what should I tell to rsync so that the journaling files are not transferred from source to target? Any other files
                     that I should avoid transferring?

No time machine won't backup a fat32 drive.
    Chronosync will:
    http://www.econtechnologies.com/
Disk Utility can back a fat32 drive up to a disk image.
The command line utility rsync will do it (so will other
Terminal based utilities, such as cp and ditto).
the Mac backup utility for windows "WinClone win do it.
You can create a sparse image, format it fat32 and use it to backup windows data on.

  • HFS drive bad/missing superblock magic number

Should an HFS drive have a superblock and magic number or is that strictly a UFS thing? I get this error but my drive is Mac formatted.

    Hi,
You can run "fsck" command by giving the alternate superblock. The alternate superblock should have given during the filesystem creation in the disk using the "newfs" command. If there is nothing you need to run the "newfs" command for the filesystem creation where you will loose your entire data.

  • AEBS won't see MacDrive formatted HFS+ drive

I'm trying to reformat a FAT32 drive to HFS+ with MacDrive. I only have an OS9 Mac which doesn't understand the drive (120GB) at all, so MacDrive on my Windows machine seems the only option (apart from getting a new Mac...).
However, formatted to HFS+ by MacDrive the drive can only be accessed, it seems, by MacDrive itself. The AEBS doesn't see it it all.
Has anyone ever succesfully created new HFS+ volumes with MacDrive that can actually be read by the AEBS? If not I probably have to wait until a friend comes over with his MBA...
By the way, I also tried making it HFS+ with GParted on my Linux machine with similar lack of success. So it begins to look like I need a real Mac to create an AEBS-compatible HFS+ drive.
    Message was edited by: intrutina

I can't format it on the OS9 Mac because the machine doesn't even see the drive in either FAT32 or MacDrive formatted HFS+ state. To make sure the USB card was okay I tested that with a 1GB USB stick, which works fine and I can format that to HFS+ without problems. But when I connect the 120GB drive it doesn't show up. And as OS9 doesn't have any kind of USB drive utilities, there's little one can do at that point as an "erase disk" on a recognized drive is the only option.
The drive itself is fine. Every other machine (including the AEBS) sees it when it's in FAT32. But I want to convert it to HFS+ to be able to store files larger than 2GB.
The drive is self-powered by the way, so it's not a bus-power problem either.

  • Missing files on HFS drive in Boot Camp 3.0

I have an external drive formatted with HFS. When I look at the contents of that drive while in Windows XP in Boot Camp 3.0 I noticed that some of the files are missing. If I log back into Snow Leopard the files are still there. I have tried deleting the "missing" file and copying it back, but the same problem persists or strangely another file in the same folder will go missing when I look for it in Boot Camp. Is there a bug in the HFS driver for Boot Camp or is there some sort of weird behavior of HFS I don't know about? This isn't a one off thing either, this is happening in multiple folders on the drive.
    Thanks.

I have begun to experience a similar issue on an external hard drive. The drive has 3 partitions (2 Journaled, 1 NTFS). I access the HFS/journaled partitions from a Boot Camp installation (slipstreamed Windows XP SP2).
Certain files do not appear in the Windows Explorer, though they do appear in Mac OS Finder. Same as <ditogi>, I copied and replaced, renamed and so on - the content is apparently unharmed. I also adjusted the permissions. Nothing seems to work. Additionally, folders also seem to be missing now.
The only recent changes to the system were:
    Mac OS: Firefox 3.6.2
Windows: GlovePIE; PPJoy; Tamamy Ikesu's DUALSHOCK3 HID Minidriver.
Any pointers as to whether this is a Mac OS or Windows issue - mass storage driver, security, or services related would be helpful.

  • Cant repartition my drive

hello all, i did have a boot camp partition. I removed it with the disk utility i'm wondering if i should have used boot camp to remove the partition. Now when i try to repartition the drive back to the original drive which was for mac to use the entire drive. It just keep giving me an error cant repartition the drive any suggestions? thanks all in advance.

    Hi,
the best way to remove a BootCamp Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable. After the reboot you can use the BootCamp Assistant again to make a new Windows partition and then install Windows again.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
    Regards
    Stefan
