Repeat advanced action over 3 slides

Hi there,
I have an advanced action that shows an image and some text when entering a slide depending on the users selection in a drop down box earlier in the program. This works fine, however I would like this same result to show on 3 different slides.
I though setting the image and text to "show for rest of project" and using the same advanced action on the slides would work - but no!
Can anyone help? It is going to take so long to copy all the images and text, rename them and then copy and edit the advanced action to suit!

You have 7.0.1.237, which means you can have shared actions. And this will be worthwhile since you have to use it on multiple courses.
For reasons of file size, and also because it keeps the same ID, I would plead to show/hide the same group (hope you grouped the text + image).
You create an conditional advanced action (one decision for each choice from the dropdown interaction), as you have already done. After testing on one slide (to see if it is OK), turn it into a shared action, and use that On Enter for each slide where you want to see the group. I know, you'll have to choose parameters each time, but a shared action is not adding to file size as do duplicates of advanced actions and you don't have to type in new names for the advanced actions on each slide.
Create a standard advanced action, that hides all groups, turn that it in a shared action as well, and trigger it On Enter for each slide where you need to hide the objects. No need for a conditional action there.

Can't save/update advanced action with specific slide set to jump to

Using version 6. Experienced with Advanced Actions, but no clue what's causing this. If I include a "Jump to Slide" pointing at a certain slide in the project the action will not save or update. I can point at any other slide except the one I need. Nothing especially unique about the slide in question.

When you save/update, does it give any error/prompt?
Try creating a fresh script just with the action to jump to 'that' slide.
Also check from a regular button, if you can set on Success to jump to the particular slide.

Advanced Action jumps Quiz slide pause point

Hello,
I have a project I have asked questions about in a previous discussion but as this is a new difficulty so I have started a new discussion.
The project in made up of only quiz slides and on each quiz slide there are:
1 - 4 text boxes that are controlled by advanced actions with ss set as buttons....this part is working great.
the quiz ...standard stuff
and audio ...not working
I created 2 groups and 1 ss set to function as a button. Group 1 has an arrow and says "Play Audio" Group 2 has a square and says "Stop Audio". On the first slide the action works great...just as I would like it to work. After answering the question you then continue to the next slide and the audio works for three clicks...click to play, click to stop and then if you click again the slide jumps the pause point on the question slide and none of the buttons work on the slide at all. It does not make a difference if you start the project form the beginning or from the middle, the problem is still the same. The first slide works just as it should and the second slide jumps the pause point and you are shut down and can not continue. I am not able to click the submit, answer the question...nothing. Any insight would be very much appreciated as once again, I am stuck. I am not sure if the problem is caused by the fact that it is a quiz slide and there is something about the quiz slide itself that is causing the problem. Or ... more likely, I am just missing something.

You didn't watch the other video? It was about playing audio as well...Have also a long blog post about possible scenarios to play/pause audio. It is different, because it is about a real pause, not about replaying an audio clip as in your example:

Question slides are a different beast, you have always to be very careful there. I blogged about buttons on question slides:

The question slide objects have highest priority. I should explore this more in depth, but my intuition tells me that perhaps clicking on your shape button triggers the action that is performed as second step on the Question slide (press Y or click on the slide). Does it happen before of after the user clicks the Submit button?

Repeat an action over time (Refresh)

Hello all,
I need to provide a refresh functionality without using a button, so that the method is executed after a period of time, for example every one minute.
Is there any control to do? I have seen that the control TimedTrigger has delay, but not run again after a set time.
I am using Netweaver Developer Studio 7.0.14

Hi Jennifer,
You still can use TimedTrigger UI element. The timedtrigger gets activated once the delay reaches zero. So the timedtrigger will call the associated action after the delay is over. What you need to do is bind the delay property to an integer field in the context. and in the action handler reset the timer to the original value. Thus it becomes a periodic timer. You should understand that the TimedTrigger will interupt the user operation when executed.

Using an advanced action to display an image (or button) on each slide.

I have an advanced action that evaluates certain criteria. The advance action is called from several different slides within the presentation. Is there some way that I can get it to display a set image if the criteria is met? It seems like I would have to write a new, slightly different advanced action on each slide to "show" the image on each slide.
Is there some way to share an image (or button) so that the advanced action can make it appear, no matter what slide you are on?

Technically your advanced actions are only allowed to show or hide images from the slide where they are actually executed. So an advanced action executed on slide 3 for example, will not be able to show or hide an image on slide 5.
However, what you can do is place the image on one of the earlier slides in the project and then set it to be timed for Rest of Project. This allows you to SHOW or HIDE the image from any slide later in the project where your Advanced Action is executed.

Can an Advanced Action Launch another Advanced Action (or more than one)?

Of course Rick, but that is not really calling another action from an action, since you need to use another event.
As Rod points out, preparing carefully advanced actions by choosing the right events, variables (reusing them) and the proper sequence for statements and decisions in advanced actions can solve a lot of situations. I have been trying to explain that in several blog posts. That was also the reason why I asked about more details concerning the user's situation. It is about an On Enter action. Until now I rarely had to use a workaround by navigating to a dummy slide to execute an advanced action over there using its slide events. All depends on planning and preparing.

Actions and Advanced Actions not working correctly. - Captivate 8

In our project, we have it set so that after every section the student is asked three quiz questions (they are set on the default quiz slides.) On success, the person jumps to the next question slide. On failure, the person goes to next slide which has two buttons - one that allows them to simply move forward to the next quiz question and one that allows them to go back and review. The "Go back and Review" button takes the person back to the specific content slide that contains the answer to the question they are being asked. This button is set to advanced actions "Jump to Slide ..." and "Show Button..." - The button is a 'Return to Quiz' button to allows the person to find the answer then try the question again. I know that the buttons on the default quiz slides cannot be programmed to do a specific action, but every time we click 'Submit' it seems fine until we click 'Next' to move ahead, it then routes us back to one of the content slides (Slide 7) instead of the next slide (if wrong), or the next question slide (if right). I have looked at the Advanced Interactions Window and there is nothing linking this slide to anything. I have not had this problem with any of our other modules or sections. I have tried creating new question slides and it did not work. I deleted Slide 7 and it worked fine the first time through the preview, but then when I viewed the preview again, it started jumping back and would not even let me get to the questions. Can anyone help?

Normally the Next button on a question slide is not needed, because it has the functionality of Skipping the question. It is however needed if you want to allow Review.
Another explanation is that you did change the normal work flow for a question slide, where a two-step process for submitting will take automatically the user to the next slide.

What did you do to need the Next button? If the user submits:
Feedback appears with the indication to press Y or to click on the slide, happens at the pausing point of the Question slide (default is 1.5secs)
When user presses Y or clicks, the actions Success/Last Attempt are executed if all attempts are exhausted, and you have only 1 attempt on Question level: the actions are by default Continue, but you can change it to 'Go to Next Slide' to shorten the waiting time (or drag the pausing point closer to the end of the slide).

How can I combine advanced actions with the branching view?

I am creating a branching scenario in Captivate 7. It's fairly involved and I'd like to keep track of it with the branching view. But, I understand that if I use an Advanced Action, it won't show up in the view. My slides track a conversation that goes down different routes based on the selected answers. I give the user 3 smart shapes that I'm using as a button. When they press the button, I want to change two variables and then jump to another slide. If I put this all into one advanced action, I have to write an advanced action for each button and it won't show the branches.
Is there a way to execute an action that will change my variables. Then, have it jump to a slide. I've been trying to give the user 1 attempt, execute my advanced action that will change the variables, and then have the Last Attempt jump to a slide, but that doesn't seem to work.
Any other ideas?

I just upgraded to version 8, hoping for a solution.
I know that I can write an Advanced Action for every slide like this:
It changes my variables and then advances to the right slide. But, I'll have 100+ slides when I'm done and I was hoping that could make this a little easier. AND, I can't track it on the branching view.
I was hoping that I could make this work:
I could use an Advanced Action to change my variables (I would only need a few) and then have it jump to a slide. This would show up in the Branching view. But, I can't get that work.
Are there any other options?

Weird issue. Captivate 6 not letting me select a script for an Advanced Action

Hi, So i'm facing this really weird issue on a captivate 6 project that i built. I need to add an Advance Action on a slide Exit action. This was previously set as "Continue" and now I want to set this to "Execute Advanced Action" (an Advanced Action script that I just wrote). The thing is that when I change the On Exit property to "Execute Advanced Actions", I am not able to select a script from the "Script" dropdown. I've tried everything from:
changing machines and doing this on different computers with Captivate 6
Making copies of the file and trying those
Closing Captivate and Restarting my computer
Ensuring that the slides are not locked
but can't seem to figure this out. Also funnily, if I try to set the On Exit property of let's say slide 67 as "Execute Advanced Actions" (when it was previously just "Continue"), all other slides are also changing to this, meaning the On Exit property for all other slides has also been changed from "Continue" to "Execute Advanced Actions".
I've been stuck with this for the last 6 hours and can't figue this out.
Please Help!!!

If this is the same file you were having issues with before where we suspected corruption, then I'd have to say this probably confirms it.

Usually the fix is to copy all slides into a new blank shell project of the same size to try and strip out the corruption issue.

However, since you are on a Cp version earlier than 7.0.1, please note that this will also strip out all of your current advanced actions as well (which also might be where the corruption is anyway).
Your issue is actually quite rare. I cannot guarantee you that Cp 7 would never do the same thing, but one advantage of Cp7 is that you can try copying and pasting slides into a new shell project and it WILL bring along the advanced actions and variables as well. So I definitely think it's worth downloading the trial version of Cp7, upgrading with the Cp 7.0.1 patch and giving it a go to see if that fixes your issue.
Alternatively, if you haven't got lots of time-consuming Advanced Actions to recreate, just paste all slides into a new shell project and recreate them. It's probably not going to take that long if it's only one project file.

Unable to make an advance action repeat on the same slide

Good Afternoon All,
A little background info. I am using Adobe Captivate 5.5.   I have recored a training practice video and I am attempting to add a button on multiple slides that would show a reference image to help the users through the training scenario when clicked. When they are done with viewing the image I want them to be able to click a button that hides the reference image and allows them to return to the training scenario.
I have inserted the image (called timesheet) on the slide. I have made the image invisble
I have created Button_9 (display name show timesheet) which is visable and Button 10 (display name Hide timesheet) which is not visable. Both buttons are set to allow infinate tries.
I have created two advanced actions
1. Show timesheet has the following actions
     - Show the reference image timesheet
     - Hide Button 9
     - Show Button 10
2. Hide timesheet has the following actions
      - Hide the reference image timesheet
      - Hide Button 10
     - Show Button 9
On Button 9 "Show Timesheet" I have set the action to be excute the advanced action 1 - show timesheet
On Button 10 "Hide Timesheet" I have set the action to be excute the advanced action 2 - hide timesheet
So far everything works as expected meaning I am able to click the show timesheet button the image appears and the button changes to hide timesheet. When I click hide timesheet the image disapears and the button changes show timesheet. However the issue is if I want to look at the reference image again on that slide the Show timesheet button is visable but does nothing when clicked.
Any thoughts would be greatly apperciated.

I think you've gone the hard way around this issue. All you really need is to provide the user with information. Clicking something is not really required by that. A mouseover would work just as well. So instead of trying to use clicks and Advanced Actions to achieve this, I would recommend you avoid all the complexity and just use a rollover image instead.
I use this technique a lot in software tutorials where the user has to perform a number of steps to complete a task and they will need to refer back to the list of steps at regular intervals. I place a rollover caption on the master slide that I can apply to any slide in the project and set the master slide objects to be on top of everything else. The rollover caption contains all of the instructions for the task. This makes it possible for the user to mouse over a given portion of the screen at any time during the task to see what they need to do next.

Can't go to next slide after adding advanced action to answer and other

Hi,
I'm creating a quizz and there are some problems I can't
solve.
I have a flash project with login page, where user should
fill name, company and e-mail. To this e-mail I have to send the
results of the quizz. After you correctly fill the gaps and click
OK, my flash aplication starts within the Adobe Captive 4 project
(swf file). And now problems:
1. In my captivate project: I have a question, 3 answers, 3
possible attemps and one correct answer. If user answer wrong,
there is a grey hightlight box, which should apears over my chosen
wrong answer and stay there to mark already chosen answer and there
is also a text animation "Sorry, your answer is not correct." under
the quizz (on the same slide), which appears instead of error
message. No problem, it works, I made a script for it, which is
joined to every wrong answer (in Edit Question > (Answers)
Advanced > Execute Advanced Action). But the problem is with
correct answer (it shows text animation "Congratulations!" and
green hightlight box). If I specify the event on correct answer and
then submit the right answer, it shows the hightlight box, the text
animation, but it doesn't continue to next slide! It stucks despite
of the
settings Edit Question > Options > (If correct answer)
Action: Go to next slide). If I add new statement to my
script, which is "Go to next slide" and then click on the right
answer, it immediately jump to next page and doesn't show the
hightlight box and the text animation. How can I wait until the
duration of the animation ends and after that go to next slide?
Script for the advanced action on my correct answer is:
-> show rightHighlightBox
-> show congratulationsText
2. I need another pass fail option, for example - I have 30
questions - 3 answers, one correct, 3 attemps. User submits wrong
answer, but then he choose the right one, but he choose the wrong
one at first ---> 0 points. It's e-learning and I need to allow
users to correct them.
3. How can I export the value of correctAnswers to my flash?

Hi,
You need to add a "Continue" statement at the end of your
script otherwise you will have to click on Skip to go to next
slide.
And all the Quzzing information can be accessed from Flash
using the Quizn variables.

Captivate 7 - Copying slides with Advanced Actions

Hello,
I have a number of slides that I want to copy and paste into a new project. Many of these slides have click to display type advanced interactions. When I copy and paste the slides into a new project, the advanced interactions don't seem to copy over. Does anybody know how to copy and paste slides into a new project along with the advanced interactions so that I don't have to recreate variables and interactions? I tried following Adobe Captivate Help, but got lost.

Repeating a script for an advanced action

I've created and advanced action for a click button. The properties are if the textbox is empty (v_null) to display a failure messge, if not display a correct message. The advanced action is working perfectly but it won't repeat it's self. So for example, if the user doesn't type something in text box and clicks the button, the script runs and gives the correct message, but if the user attempts to write someting after the first message pops in the text box and clicks on the button again, nothing displays. It's like the scipt will only run once.
Is there a way to have an advanced action repeat it's self?
Here is the script:

Captivate's Advanced Actions are event-driven. So you can only trigger them via some kind of on-screen event.

Once you've triggered the advanced action as a result of clicking a button, then you need another button click or event of some kind to run the action again. Captivate does not currently allow you to call an advanced action from another action.

Advanced action: jump to next slide if all text entry boxes are filled out. If not, pause project and show error message

Working with captivate 4 and advanced actions, which is a great new feature, I encounter the following problem:
I have a sign-in slide, where the user has to insert his name and several other data. For user-friendly handling, I have the text entry boxes appearing one after another, so when the user confirms his entry, the next text entry box appears and has the focus.
The button for jumping to the next slide works with an advanced action:
Only if the user has filled out all the text entry boxes, the action "jump to the next slide" is performed.
If not, an error message is shown.
It works well so far.
Now, I want the project to pause there, and not to jump back to the beginning of the slide (as suggested in another Thread in this forum), because then the text entry boxes dissappear again.
I tried to set the movie control variable rdcmndPause to 1 in order to make the movie pause, but nothing happens.
I tried it with an external playback control bar and without, it didn't work in either case.
I found the hint:
To control the project through the skin file, add the prefix cpSkinLoader_mc to the variables. This might be the solution.(?)
But how can I change the name of a MovieControl Variable?
If anyone knows, how this is supposed to work or has another suggestion to solve the problem, please let me now.

Hi Petra,
I believe I can help you, but from a completely different angle than anything you've tried yet. I try to find simple solutions to complex problems. No advanced actions will be needed, just a little creative timing. First, I need to be sure I correctly understand what it is you're hoping to accomplish.
If I understand you correctly, you've got a single welcome slide. On this slide you've got several TEB's (text entry boxes), set up with variables to make your project more personal or gather some required information. These TEB's have no right or wrong answers, they simply require an entry: such as an address which begins with a numeric key. The TEB's are set to appear one after another, as one is completed the next one appears. Once all have been completed a next button, set to "jump to next slide" takes them to the next slide and on through your course. You want the project to pause until the user clicks this button, and only proceed if all TEB's have been entered. If not, you wish an error message to appear.
If the above description is correct, I'd do the following:
Leave your TEB's to show up one at a time as the previous is submitted, as you've described. (each one pauses the slide till info is submitted, then "continues" the slide and the next TEB displays)
Set each TEB to "display for rest of slide".
For the next button: In the properties dialog box, options tab, name the button "Next_button" and uncheck the visibility box.
Open the properties for the final TEB that students will fill in and set the on success property to "show" then choose the Next_button by clicking the drop down arrow beside the "show" field. This will hide the Next button until all TEB's have been filled in.
There is no error message, because there is no possibility of error. Why tell a student they've messed up, just eliminate that possibility! All TEB's only display after the previous is entered, and the Next button is hidden until the last TEB is entered.
I've tested this in a simple 3 slide project and it all worked fine, including some variables. If you need more detailed info, or would like to see the sample proj. I created let me know.

Advanced action not working on slide end

Hi,
I am new to captivate.
I am creating a toggle button. On clicking this button an image appear and disappear.
It works fine if I click the button before captivate slider reaches to its end. Slider stops moving when I click.
But if I try to click the same button after slider reaches to its end the button does not work.
I am applying the advanced action.
Pleae help me to resolve the issue.

I just set up the same toggle action but I had mine slightly differently set up so that:
If toggle == 0
Assign toggle = 1
Show img_1
Else
Assign toggle = 0
Hide img_1
This worked for me and clicking the button did not advance the slide timeline.
Do you have Pause After X seconds selected for the button properties under Timing accordion?
If your button is not pausing the slide and you allow the timeline to move beyond the button's active area (at the end of the slide or at the end of the button's duration on the timeline) then it will cease to work.
