Repeat Kernel Panics

My wife's laptop is having repeat Kernel panics while using Safari. I don't have a recent message to display the info, but I've read this may be a memory issue. Other thoughts before I take it in to Apple?

As you mentioned a frequent cause of KP's is RAM related. These are fairly easy to troubleshoot by yourself if you want to. The causes can be:
• Faulty RAM
• RAM not seated
• Incorrect RAM
I'm assuming if you are using the original RAM that came with the computer it's not Incorrect RAM, however if you have upgraded it that's the first thing I'd look at.
You mention this occurs when she is using Safari, Safari is a very stable product however all browsers tend to be RAM hogs, the longer they are left on and the more tabs or windows open the more RAM they use. Run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and you can get a fair idea how RAM and % CPU is being used.
That is where I'd start. In addition here are some very useful articles on trouble shooting Kernel Panics:

  • 24" iMac repeatedly kernel panics when idle

    I have recently been struck by repeated kernel panics on my 24" iMac. Until a few days ago, this happened when I woke it from sleep. Running Applejack showed up a corrupt Kensington MouseWorks pref file and removing that seems to have solved that problem. Now, however, I frequently come back to my iMac to find it kernel panicked. In other words, it panics without me doing anything. A recent example from panic.log is copied below. Is there an obvious fix? I have repaired permissions and checked memory. Thanks!

    First, if your iMac has any third-party RAM, rather than the original Apple RAM, then I'd suggest that is the likely suspect. If so, that may not necessarily be shown in the results of the Apple Hardware Test. Best test of third party RAM is to remove it and replace with only the original Apple RAM, and see what the results of that are.
    I don't know how or if Remy resolved his, but based on your above comment, I'd suggest you try the SMC reset, found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
    If that doesn't resolve, I'd also try a PRAM reset.
    To reset the PRAM:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Start up the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    If that wouldn't help, then I suppose you'll have to proceed through the links in my above post.

  • Repeated kernel panic (seems related to ipw2200)

    Since a few months I have been experiencing repeated kernel panics at seemingly random times (the system boots up fine).
    Below is an example of the panic screen that shows up, it seems related to the network driver ipw2200.
    What I have done so far:
    - I have set my router not to use N mode (only B and G) since the adapter does not support N, this did not resolve the situation.
    - I have run memtest86+ with no error messages.
    - I have reinstalled the kernel, to no avail
    - I have reinstalled grub, although I don't think that could be the problem, since bootup is fine.
    Here is one of the panic screens that appears:

    Any ideas how to resolve or further troubleshoot this?

    graysky wrote:Is that driver included with the kernel package?  If so, how about running mainline from the AUR as a test.
    I am using the standard linux kernel from the official repositories. The ipw2200 driver is included, but requires the ipw2200-fw firmware.
    While creating the package for the mainline kernel, the ipw2200 driver also shows up, doesn't that mean that it is also included in that kernel?
    Would it still be useful to test this kernel in that case? I'll try it anyway, I am making the package after booting from a 2011 archlinux CD,
    after which I have not yet had a kernel panic occur.
    Additional note: turning the wireless network adapter off completely still gives the same kernel panic at seemingly random intervals (from minutes to hours after boot)
    Also the computer seems to heat up sometimes, the following message appears: temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled.
    The kernel panic also appeared a few times while I was monitoring the temperature, which was at normal levels at those times.
    Any more ideas?

  • Intel HD3000 repeated kernel panics

    I'm writing some software (an open-source microscope control system) that uses OpenGL, and I'm getting repeated kernel panics whenever I make even a minor mistake. That is, OpenGL is functional, but if I do something slightly wrong then my computer crashes. This makes debugging absurdly painful, as you can probably imagine.
    The panic report log (pasted below) clearly implicates the HD3000 driver. My question is, what can I do about this? The program should crash if I do something wrong, absolutely, but it shouldn't take the computer with it. This is ruining my ability to get work done.
    I suppose it's remotely possible that the card is at fault, but I was able to play a 3D game without any difficulty so I doubt that.
    I'm running OSX 10.7.4 and Software Update says I'm fully up-to-date. Would it be possible to downgrade my graphics card drivers? Perhaps a previous version is more stable.

    Remove those 3rd party kernel extensions and call me in the morning.

  • Repeated kernel panic on iMac late 2009

    Dear all,
    A couple of weeks ago, my iMac 27" late 2009 started repeatedly crashing with a kernel panic.
    Thinking this might be hard-drive related, I brought my iMac for repair under the hard drive replacement programme. Which means I have a virtually empty hard drive with only Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed and a couple of third-party software packages, the only one installing extensions being (AFAIK) TechTool Pro, DropBox and perhaps Chrome.
    Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem.
    I then tested the RAM with TechTool Pro, which didn't find any issue. I also tried and removing all RAM modules but one and progressively adding all the other modules back in, but could not figure out whether one of the modules was faulty: the Mac worked fine for at least 20 minutes after each restart, at which point I added another module. Once all the modules were added back and after an hour of use, though, kernel panics reappeared.
    I then thought about a temperature problem. Indeed, I have just moved to Singapore, where temperature and humidity is quite high all year long. Below is what is reported by Temperature Monitor - from what I have read elsewhere, this does not seem outside of the ordinary:
    * Ambient air: 30°C
    * CPU A Heatseak: 44°C
    * CPU Core 1: 47°C
    * CPU Core 2: 40°C
    * Display Screen Proximity: 39°C
    * Graphics Processor Heatsink 1: 54°C
    * Graphic Processor Temperature D: 54°C
    * Main Logic Board: 56°C
    * Northbridge Heat Sink: 69°C
    Kernel packages are quite hard to reproduce: they can come in very close succession and then the Mac can work fine for a few hours... For instance, I've just restarted from a series of 3 kernel panics but can now safely post this message.
    Any idea what this could be related to?
    I've copied below the error log - maybe you can find some useful information in it:

    You don't have any extensions that can break OS X and your log indicates a graphic crash, so it looks like the graphic card is damaged. Take the Mac to an Apple Store.
    If the problem started after the hard drive replacement and Apple determintes that this problem was caused during the replacement, the graphic card replacement will be free because you have a 90-day warranty after the hard drive replacement

  • Repeated kernel panics after installing Mavericks

    I'm geting repeated kernel attacks and having a hard time isolating the issue. Sometimes, I won't be able to be on the computer for 5 minutes, and other times, it works for hours, but it's been repeated. Could you help me point out what the problem is? The error log is as follows:

    I didn't see anything there that was specifically for Mavericks, but I did a clean install. And I'm still getting the sudden blackout followed by the prompt to restart. It seems to happen the most when I'm using iPhoto or otherwise dealing with photos, but it also happens when I'm just checking email on Chrome.
    FWIW, here's the log:

    Could be the video card. Boot from the Apple Hardware Test on the Additional Software Disc that came with the computer. Run it several times in Extended. Write down any error you get. Might take a long time to finish, depending on how much RAM you have installed.
    +Using Apple Hardware Test+
    +Before using Apple Hardware Test, disconnect all external devices with the exception of keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. You should also disconnect the Ethernet network cable. If you are using the MacBook Air, you may need to connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive. Print out these instructions before proceeding with the following steps.+
    +1. Restart your computer, holding down the “D” key while the computer restarts.+
    +2. When the Apple Hardware Test language chooser screen appears, select the language appropriate for your locale, and press the Return key or click on the right arrow button.+
    +3. If your computer is not supported by this version of Apple Hardware Test, an error dialog will be displayed. You should Shut Down the computer, locate the correct DVD containing Apple Hardware Test for this computer, and repeat the above steps.+
    +4. If your computer does not restart to Apple Hardware Test:+
    +a) Restart your computer with the DVD containing Apple Hardware Test. This should be the same DVD this document resides on. Hold down the “D” key while the computer restarts.+
    +b) If your Mac has a Firmware Password enabled you need to disable it first using the Firmware Password Utility when booted from the Mac OS X installation DVD.+
    +5. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears, follow the onscreen instructions.+

  • Repeating kernel panics, need help.

    Okay, since today my Mac is totally unstable. It randomly freezes, won't wake up from sleep mode. I have seen different forms of kernel panics in the last hour, one with the "Please restart your computer" and another one where I could see lines describing the panic on the screen, just like in SUM.
    It gets even stranger. When I restarted it like I was told (Holding down the power button) it didn't boot properly, instead the screen went for red to green to blue, then all three mixed in three different ways. It was like an acid trip. I waited, but it kept on repeating, so I held the power button for another 3 seconds. This time it booted properly, yet froze at the login screen. Next try, I could log back into OS X.
    Here's the description of the panic:

    Oh, and another thing, I can't boot from DVD/CD anymore.
    Someone please help me, since I need the iBook tomorrow at school.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   60 Gb HD, 768 Mb Ram, Radeon 9200

    Scalepet,
    This kind of thing happened to my brother's computer once; though, his was a blue & white G3 PowerMac with Panther. But that's not to specific to what I think may be the problem.
    Kernal panics, when they're this frequent and rarely allow you to completely boot and log in, are usually a sign of very, very bad hardware. When hardware goes corrupt-which it does-Mac OS X basically freaks out during the power-on self diagnostic.
    Solution? Start removing hardware. No, I don't mean grab the Alan Wrench and start removing the GPU and Optical Drive; I mean removing hardware that you were able to add; basically, stuff that didn't roll out of the factory in your computer.
    Seeing as you have an iBook, this option is somewhat limited. But the kernal report is showing that you have 768MB RAM, which means that you have upgraded your RAM. So, lift up the keyboard, get to the RAM, and remove the extra chip; I think that may be what's causing the meltdown. If not, try the Airport Extreme card, if you have one. Also, your external hardware--USB mice, for example--should be unplugged.
    Best of luck,
    Nick L.

  • Macbook has repeated kernel panics and freezes

    Hi,
    My macbook has worked quite normally up until this point. I have a macbook from late 2009/early 2010. 2 nights ago the only change I made was update the shockwave on google chrome. The following day it froze, i restarted it and then a bunch of text in the background came up and said i needed to restart ( I had my first kernel panic). I researched this found out what they were and have tried everything from single boot to safe boot but what often happens is it will freeze during the apple loading screen (havent got to log in scren) or have a kernel panic. If I let it rest for a few hours it will let me log in for upmost 10m not enough time to software update or run a  disk utility I think. Sometimes when trying to turn it on I'll get three repeated beeps or one time I had a terrible noise like broken speakers or something? I have tried resetting the PRAM but not quite sure it worked... also I have a intel based mac. Any help would be great I have alot of work saved to this macbook and I have assignments which need to be completed.
    Thanks

  • Repeating kernel panics

    Hi there.
    Yesterday about at the same time I had a first kernel panic about 1-2 min after gnome loaded (my caps-lock and scroll-lock blinked).
    Today during the boot I had a kernel panic after the line "Doing something with ACPI" - there was a long message and after 30 (60?) seconds the pc rebooted. I dug all the logs I have and couldn't fine anything related, if you could point me to a specific log to look at would be nice.

    Ok one more update.
    Kernel panic occurs only first time I boot the pc. I.E. I woke up today, turned the pc on and got kernel panic. No matter how much times Il reboot today, or even if I power down the pc it wont happen anymore. Next panic will be tomorrow after Ill turn the pc (after night that it was off). I know it sounds strange but this is the behavior.
    Now the error:
    During boot looks like this:
    a lot of sutff.
    Arch linux welcome screen
    ::Starting udev events
    ::Triggering udev events
    ::Loading modules
    ::Loading standard acpi modules
    ::Waiting for udev event to be processed
    KERNEL PANIC
    The title of the panic says Hardware Error
    There is a lot info, with hexadecimal numbers, and a stack-trace in the end, but I was able to retrieve only few line (well after 30s it will reboot)
    Hardware Error
    CPU Machine check exception
    ????? processor context corrupt
    Kernel Panic: ???? not syncing
    Where dots represent a lot of info, and question marks a words that I probably missed.
    I wouldn't worry that much if it was after I changed the hardware, or installed some new kernel, but i DIDN'T :( Its just happend 4-5days ago and keeps happening every day, once a day.
    Any help please?

  • My NEW Macbook Pro & repeated Kernel panic

    I just got my Macbook Pro for a Christmas present. I bought it from Infinity Micro in California.
    I "migrated" and after a short time programs weren't openining, every program I tried would quit and I was getting Kernel panic and then sometimes I'd see a black screen that said something about Darwin and login. I took the disks and tried to do a fresh clean install erasing the hard drive at the same time and restoring everything to defaults. I spent HALF the day on this yesterday, 8 times I tried installing and it would get almost all the way through and quit telling me the intstallation failed. Of course the computer wouldn't start anymore. Finally on the 9th attempt, the entire system installed and everything was fresh. I only loaded my documents and iphoto library then I started using the computer. Everytime I went to a Safari page that had quick time Safari would crash. I tried downloading Quicktime and it wouldn't download (wouldn't install). I restarred and got a screen that was half black half blue telling me to hold down the power key and restart. After 7 attempts, I was still getting this black/blue screen with the restart message.
    At this point I don't know what to do! I don't want a defective brand new computer and the vendor, Infinity Micro, is telling me I have to go to Apple for support. I really dont' want them to "fix" this machine. I just want a replacement with a non-defective unit. The merchant's return policy said they covered defective products within the first 30 days.
    This morning the computer turned on and is "so far" working well. I do not want an erratic behaving almost $3000 computer!
    What would you do?

    It may be that the RAM modules are not seated properly. Many problems can be tracked to bad RAM or poor RAM installation.
    Try this...
    Power down your computer.
    Unplug the power cable.
    Remove the battery.
    Access the RAM modules... unseat each and replace it.
    Button up the computer.
    Reinstall the battery.
    Plug in the computer and turn it on.

  • Repeated kernel panic after upgrading to snow leopard

    after the upgrade completed i got the "you need to restart your computer" screen, after doing so i kept getting sent to that screen
    i called apple support, did numorous things that solved nothing.
    finally booted into safemode and the install was completed and successful. but when i try to boot normally i get this kernel panic and the "you need to restart your computer" screen. i can not boot up out of safe mode..
    not really sure what is causing the issue because there are no unloaded kexts...

    What were the peripherals you had plugged into your Mac when you installed Snow Leopard? Apparently, one or more drivers or kernel extensions are corrupted.
    You may have to perform another clean install to solve the problem, after completely erasing your hard drive. Since you seem to have a MacBook Pro (which model?), you may want to install with the battery removed: it'll clock the CPUs down, and it'll take a little longer, but you won't risk overheating, and that may sometimes be the reason why SL installs go bad.
    Since Snow Leopard, the OS caches the files prior to install, so that you can perform a clean install in several instalments. The downside of this is, if/when a corrupted file is being cached, it gets written to disk anyway, and is not overwritten by a clean copy.

  • Repeated Kernel Panic with a dual 1.8 G5

    I have a dual 1.8 GHz G5 bought on the refurb Store in january.
    It is the model with only two pairs of memory slots, 80 GB disk, and 2x128 MB of memory.
    I have added 2x1GB of memory bought at macway.fr, and two SATA Maxtor 300 GB coming from my former Powermac.
    The machine works well in basic conditions, but have Kernel Panic (or freezes, but mainly KP) when doing intensive task like h264 video encoding or everything CPU intensive.
    Since the beginning, I have noticed that this machine fans never never accelerate when doing CPU intensive task.
    (I use another G5 in my office, a dual G5 2 GHz, and its fans frequently accelerate when it works. And no Kernel Panic at all).
    I have used Temperature Monitor. If I do a h264 video encoding, I see the CPU temperature raising, from basic 55°C to 71-73 °C, where the Kernel Panic arrives...
    And fans never never accelerate during this time.
    Temperature Monitor indicates a specified upper limit of 76 °C.
    When I look through the pransparent panel, everything seems to be OK. Fans gently turn, no LED lighting.
    Do you think, like me, that this machine could have a cooling problem ?
    What could I our should I do ?
    PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Fans never accelerate.

    I think that you are right with the RAM.
    I have removed the two 1 GB modules and made a test with only the original 256 MB.
    Exporting a clip to h264 while playing another. 100 % of both CPU.
    Temperature has risen up to 74 °C with no Kernel Panic.
    The test is still going on with no problem.
    I trusted the memory because I bought it in a Mac boutique. It seems I was wrong...
    It is better for me, because it is easier to replace memory modules than to carry the G5 to an Apple Center and be without my computer

  • Bizarre repeating Kernel Panic

    About a year ago, my good old iMac began to exhibit a strange display error, Green (sometimes blueish, or any any color really, but primarily blue-green) gradient blocks started to pop-up everwhere. Finder windows, Menu Bars, Desktop, heck, coming out of sleep once the entire screen was taken over.
    Anyway, if nothing was done about this, the system would Kernel Panic, and one would have to restart. At first i thought this to be one of the elusive mac viruses, so i bought norton antivirus, and ran the program. Well, halfway through, the machine kernel paniced. i tried booting it off of the CD, and while the system didn't kernal panic, the display error was very prevalent.
    i reinstalled the OS, i reformatted the hard drive, i even took it to the Mac Genius thing, but infuriatingly, the one time i want it to kernel panic, it doesnt, so they said it's probably a logic board error. nothing got rid of the error for more than a week or two at best.
    Eventually, furious, i bought a macbook. So while this isn't the most pressing thing in the world, it would really help if you could tell me what to do to fix it. Here's the panic.log file for one of the errors... i think they're mostly the same. i don't have a screen shot of the display problem, sorry!

    is there anything i can do to save to computer?

    Hello one:
    Welcome to Apple discussions:
    Flat statement - there are NO documented viruses (elusive or otherwise) that affect a Mac running OS X. I strongly suggest you dump the Norton AV software. While their AV software seems to run OK, Norton stuff caused OS X users (including me) serious problems in the past. The software manufacturer has dropped support for most Mac software.
    Now then, to your issue.
    I do not read kernel panics well. However, if you have reinstalled OS X, you have eliminated almost all software-related causes of kernel panics. That, of course, leaves hardware. I do not read crash logs well, unfortunately. I would, however, run the hardware checker that came with your Mac to see if it points to any problems. You can also check on the HD (unlikely cause, based on your post) by opening disk utility and highlighting the hD (not your files). At the bottom is something called S.M.A.R.T. If that says anything other than verified, you have a HD problem.

  • Repeated Kernel Panics on MBP17" after upgrading from SL (without anything else) to LION or MAVERICKS .

    All  tentatives to upgrade from SL to LION or MAVERICKS on my MBP17" causes a KERNEL panic.
    SL was reinstalled on several HDD and SSD WITHOUT anything else.
    Any update to LiON or MAVERICKS will result in an immediate Kernel Panic.
    Any clue?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your quick answer.
    I am the only administrator of my personnal MAC (only one account)
    I can't even start in safe mode, there is no firevault nor firmware password , nor RAID volume.
    Therefore I had to format the disk and reinstall SL that works like a charm. No way to access the console ….
    Any attempt to install LION or MAVERICKS results in a KERNEL PANIC during installation ...
    There is no apps installed, no peripheral attached,
    By chance I managed somehow to print a log report (see below)
