Repeated connection to Gmail imap server problem.

I get this message everytime I try to get my Gmail account emails, in Apple Mail: 'The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding.  Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." My account info is correct. I didn't change anything and all my settings are correct as far as I know. It first started happening on my iPhone, now on my iMac as well.  I've tried specifying the gmail imap server (in quotes above) in the mail settings for my Gmail account, but to no avail.  MANY people are having the same problem (google it if you don't believe me).  Can anyone help?

Thank you for your advice, but I did that.... Perhaps 5 times with 2 step verification, 4 without. Finally I Tried changing incoming server to imap.googlemail.com as suggested elsewhere. It just started working within the last 3 minutes!!!!!!! I've been slaving over this computer for hours because of this. The outage may have started it, but seems something new took over. Who knows.

  • IPhone Mail App cannot connect with gmail iMap server

So my gmail address list or contacts seems to have been hacked and all my contacts who are still talking to me have told me so.
So I changed my gmail password.
No more complaints, and probably no more friends as contacts.
But seriously, I have been able to get gmail (web) working with my new double authentication password(s). Also, my outlook for MAC is working using the special "generated App Password". (because Outlook cannot do the double authentication thingie)
Ditto for the gmail app from google on my iPhone. (it works too)
    BUT
I cannot get the iPhone Mail App to connect to Gmail.
I have deleted (i thought) my existing gmail setup from my iPhone. When I try to re establish the gmail settings, using either the password generated by the MAC / iCloud keychain generator or the App password, I get the message "My Name" is already added.
It looks to me that there is something in the iPhone that matches my gmail address, even though I deleted the account.
Any suggestions before I call Apple for help?
    Thanks
    Barry

    I think so.
Actually I think I need to get the App Password for Mail on my phone. It generates the app password and I enter it into the password in the gmail setup for mail.
The problem is that when I hit next on that page, I get the message:
"my name" is already added" and I cannot proceed.
Before doing this setup I deleted my gmail account by tapping the email address and hitting delete in the Mail, Contact and Calendars setup..
but, there is something hiding in my iPhone that remembers my old gmail password (I guess) and doesn't let me proceed.
If I enter my gmail iChain password I get the same thing.
If i do this in airplane mode (no connection to google) i also get the same.
I talked to an apple care person who had me reset all my settings... still the same thing.
I am trying to avoid a gull reset of the iPhone, but that may be in the cards.
Going to go to the apple store and ask there, but i am not hopeful.

  • Problem connecting to gmail IMAP

I cannot connect using wifi to gmail IMAP server although SMTP connection is fine.  I am using a new macbook pro and mountain lion.  problem, occured after I deinstalled Sprint air card software using Clean My Mac.   I deinstalled Sprint software because it was not working well.  Bad idea since there is no new Sprint software that will install with system 10.8.3.  Anybody have any suggetions?

Offlineimap doesn't get your mail to you quicker - but it definitely does save mutt loading time.  Offlineimap runs as a daemon and keeps a local maildir copy of all your mail.  The main purpose for this is so you can read your mail while offline (hence the name), but an added bonus is that whenever you open mutt, mutt doesn't need to wait for the imap connection/download/sync/whatever - it just reads from the local maildir which is effectively instantaneous*.
EDIT: *often that is.  I do have a 'storage' mailbox with ~5000 emails in it.  When I swtich to that mailbox mutt still takes a second to read the maildir folder.  But if this were in online form only it could take a minute or more.  My inbox which  often holds 50-100 emails loads instantly.

  • Connection to the imap server failed on WiFi

    Hi -
Has anyone encountered this problem? All of a sudden, I am getting the following error message on my iPhone when I try to check my email (and am connected to my WiFi network): "Connection to the imap server failed." If I turn off WiFi, the connection works fine (using 3G). All settings are correct, and this has worked fine for almost a year before the problem started.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Rob

If you truly tried everything there is no hope of ever making it work. But perhaps you missed something, so here are a few things (and if you've tried them...)
Reboot the phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears
Go to Settings/Mail,contacts,calendars, tap on a mail account. Make sure there's an entry for SMTP or Outgoing mail server (You may need to tap on Account to see the entry)
Tap on SMTP and make sure you have entered your email name and password (even if it says "optional")
If there's more than one server listed make sure the appropriate one for that account is the primary
If all of the above is correct delete the account, reboot the phone, and add the account back

  • Is there an IMAP server problem?

Since Friday afternoon my email client has been having extreme difficulty connecting to my incoming email server. As I write this post there are five unread messages in my inbox when I check the webmail site, but none have arrived in my client's inbox because it cannot connect to the server.
As far as I know, all the server settings are correct on my email client, and the fact that it was working fine until Friday afternoon supports this.
The problem seems only to be with the incoming server, because the in-built 'Connection Doctor' in the Apple Mail client app consistently shows the connection to the outgoing (SMTP) server to be rock solid. However it is forever showing the incoming (IMAP) server status as 'Connecting to server...' with a spinning gearwheel showing.
The server I have set as my incoming IMAP one is: imap.mail.yahoo.com
As I say, this has worked satisfactorily for ages, but has suddenly become unreliable.
We have two user accounts on the computer here, (each having different btinternet.com email address, and the same problem of not connecting with the IMAP server exists on both our BT email accounts.
I have been onto Apple Support, and by doing various diagnostic procedures they tell me there is nothing wrong with my Mail app.
I had a 'live chat' session with BT Support on Friday afternoon, and quite frankly I was disgusted at their response, which was to tell me that they 'didn't have the expertise' to deal with my issue. They directed me to sign-up to a paid-for service called BT Expert Tech or something...
Is anything going on with the IMAP servers, because everything seems to point towards it being them causing my current problems.

I have had issues with my imap account via. Yahoo, similar to you.
Mine works for a number of weeks then fails.
I have read somewhere that a setting of apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com is more reliable.
I tried it and it has been more reliable but recently started playing up again.
My solution was to use my iCloud imap account which is reliable and has never gone down.
I changed my bt accounts back to pop and have them forward the emails to icloud.
I keep the Pop accounts in the mail app on my MacBook Pro and on my iPad so I can send emails from those accounts.
I setup some rules in iCloud to sort the emails into folders created in iCloud for the BT accounts.
This works for me and is reliable.
I am hoping when BT change us to Critical Path email that iMap will then work correctly.
    Good Luck

  • HT204076 Since I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.1.2 last night, I can no longer connect to my imaps server.

Since I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.1.2 last night, I can no longer connect to my imaps server. Other clients can connect to the server. Rebooting the device is no help. Before the update (i.e. 8.1.1), it was working fine. Is this a known issue?

No, it is not a known issue. It is a known non-issue. Try resetting your IMAP login ID and password. Both the incoming and outgoing. If that fails delete the account reboot the phone, and add it back.

    Hello Linds,
    No need to redo everything.
Is your gMail POP or IMAP?
It's likely just a Port# or authentication method not really the Password.

  • [SOLVED] Mutt having problem connecting to gmail imap

Just yesterday my mutt email was fine connecting to gmail via imap. I didn't touch .muttrc at all. Now when I run mutt it gives the "Connecting to imap.gmail.com ..." message and then times out with the "Connection to imap.gmail.com closed" error and I get an empty inbox. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

  • Connecting to Incoming Mail Server Problems

I'm trying to set up email on my new laptop for my company... this is the first time to get a mac on the windows server. IMAP is enabled and that's what I'm trying to set up through. My IT dept. has even put my ID on the IMAP protocol permissions. However, I still cannot connect to the incoming server... only outgoing. I can send email, just not recieve. I'm getting the message that the password is being rejected.
    Settings:
    Account ID: DOMAIN\SJOHNSON
    Pswd: XXXXXX
    Incoming server: 10.X.X.X
Outgoing server: 10.X.X.X (same as incoming)
Can anyone help? Any suggestions, please?!?!?!
    Thank you!

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I started having this same problem yesterday after installing the Safari 7.0.6 update.  This has to be a coincidence.
I have 11 email accounts setup in Apple Mail.  The only one working now is my work exchange email.  The rest are either accounts I host on my own OS X Mavericks Server using IMAP and SMTP over SSL except for two of them which are GMAIL and iCloud.
Same issue.  The iMac just displays the warning triangle symbol and when I click I get the Unable to Connect dialog with the message.
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “iCloud” or try again.
The server returned the error: The server “p03-imap.mail.me.com” cannot be contacted on port 993.
I have verified the settings on all of my IOS devices and they are the same.  As with the original post, my IOS devices are all able to connect to all of my accounts without any problems.
To try and troubleshoot this issue I switched to another user account and tried to connect to one of my mail accounts and got the same Unable to Connect issue.  I then opened another email client (Thunderbird) and configured the email account exactly the same there (IMAP on port 993 and SMTP on port 587).  Thunderbird was able to connect and retrieve my mail without any problems.  As an additional test I opened up terminal and tried "telnet p03-imap.mail.me.com 993".  I was immediately connected to the iCloud server.
To sum up this does not appear to be a problem with the iMac, the user account, my mail server or the network.  It appears to be a problem with Apple Mail only.
I wonder if there is a plist file or something that needs nuking.

  • Corrupted attachments in Mail.app connecting to an IMAP server

    Hi,
I'm using Mail.app to connect to our local IMAP server (over SSL). For a long while, I've had problems with large attachments being corrupted when I open a message in Mail. If I view the same message in our webmail client (which also talks to the IMAP server), the attachments are uncorrupted.
If I save a message as source and decode using a mime64 decoding tool, the attachments are corrupted in the same way as from within mail. This is most clearly visible when the attachment is a large jpeg.
If I remove the locally cached messages by deleting the /Library/Mail/IMAP-xxxxx folder, then re-download all the messages, the attachments will be often corrupted in a different position in the image.
Using another IMAP mail client (Thunderbird) on the same machine to connect to the same IMAP server shows no corruption in the same messages which are corrupted in Mail.app.
I can't say whether this problem was introduced with Tiger, but it has persisted for a long time. This problem is only for INCOMING attachments; I have had no problems with corruption in the attachments I send to others.
Other Tiger Mail.app users in the building have the same issue. Any suggestions to identify and fix this problem will be greatly appreciated. It's possible it's bug in Mail, and I would be happy to contribute any information or perform any testing required to fix it.
    Using:
    Mail.app v2.1 (752/752.2)
    Thunderbird v1.5.0.7 (20060909)
    Mac OS X 10.4.8 Build 8L127
1 Ghz Powerbook G4 with 1.25 GB RAM
    Best regards,

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The right way of doing that would be rebuilding the
mailbox, i.e. select it and do Mailbox >
Rebuild. Does that make a difference?
Rebuilding the mailbox — no difference. The attachments are corrupted at a different position in the image, but still corrupted.
Another thing to try would be trashing the Mail
cache, i.e., quit Mail, in the Finder go to
Trashing the Mail Cache — no difference. The attachments are not re-downloaded from the server, and so the position of the corruption in the image doesn't change.
What happens if you move or copy the message to a
local "On My Mac" mailbox, and open the local copy
    instead?
The local copy then has corrupted attachments.
    /Library/StartupItems/
    Empty.
    /Library/InputManagers/
    SIMBL
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    Empty.
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    Empty.
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
    GPGMail
    Mail.appetizer
A quick test — disabling these plug-in components has no effect on the corrupted messages, even after re-building the mailbox in question.
I should point out again that it's not just my machine that's affected by this problem. I verified today that other users of the same server are also affected. This isn't likely to be caused by a quirky configuration on my machine.
Also, open System Preferences, and go to
Accounts > Login Items. What do you see
    there?
    LittleSnitchDaemon
    iCalAlarmScheduler
    iCal
    Mail
    SmartReporter
    LiteSwitchX
    MicrosoftMouseHelper
    MouseLocatorAgent
    Skype
    Last.fm
    Renicer
The items below the line have been added recently, and the problem was definitely there before hand.
    Dylan.

  • Mail doesn't get connected to an IMAP server

Hi folks. I use Maill.app with several accounts based on imap servers, but i had to create a new one (in a new profile) and can´t get connected (it said that never found internet).
The strange thing is that i did it on another Mac and worked without problems (with Mail.app) and in my machine did it with Thunderbird and worked perfectly.
When i asked netstat about the connections, with mail nothing appears, but with Thunderbird shows inmediatly the IMAP connection.
If i do a telnet to the server and port 143, ther server answer in less than a second.
I'm connected by a proxy server, but i reach the server without problem (the other mac where i tried earlier also is behind the proxy and works perfectly)
    Any ideas about it?

Have you tried power cycling your Wi-Fi acces point or router?
Sometimes they get devices "stuck" in them and will not allow the device to reconnect.
You might also want to try temporarily disabling the security on the Wi-Fi to see if that will allow your iPhone to connect.

  • Mail suddenly won't connect to gMail IMAP servers after network crash

After the network in our building went down yesterday, Apple Mail refuses to connect to Google's IMAP servers. I am guessing this is some sort of weird config problem. Is there a way to hit the reset button without dumping my prefs and loosing my current mail setup?

    Same with me here...
Hey, come on, i can't connect so any more of my Gmail accounts using mail 3.6 (+ the 10.5.7 update too), my University mail account works (configured having a mail.any_university.com server).
Hey apple guys, this can't be...!???!
Maybe you should concentrate a little more on things your computer users need than on making a new iphone that is smaller than a walnut.
I wanna be able to check my mails again !
