Repeated firmware update?

Hi,
Every time that I reboot my macbook pro, I get a pop-up notice to install the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5....I've installed it about 5 times now, but I keep getting this as though I hadn't.
Any ideas what's causing this?
Thanks

This means that it has not been successfully installed.
It is important that you follow the installation instructions exactly which I hope you have done anyway.
I suggest that you download the appropriate installer from Apple/Support/Downloads rather than use Software Update. Then use the downloaded installer to proceed. Under no circumstances interrupt the installation at any stage as this can cause failure.

  • Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 keeps repeating

Recently I had my MacPro motherboard replaced by an Authorized Repair Center, and for the most part, everything has been working great since.  That said, as I've been performing my regular software updates, I've noticed that the "Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1" keeps appearing as new update.  I've installed this update multiple times now (or it seemed as though I did), but it keeps appearing with each new update.
Is there some way I can complete the update?  Is it possible that there is some serial number conflict between my old/new motherboard that is preventing this?  Do I need to return my machine to the repair center?
    Thanks for any help.

Did you actually run the update from your Utilities folder (where I believe it ends up)? You'll go through a process of rebooting and hearing the long tone / seeing grey screen and progress bar. Until it's actually run properly, you'll keep seeing reminders.

If you get a network timed out error, try disabling the security software on the computer during the download and install.
You can also try a direct download andinstall by:

  • HP Laserjet P2015 will not accept firmware update

    Hi,
A laserjet P2015n will not accept a firmware upgrade.
When attempting to upgrade, paper jam led flashes 3 times, pauses for 1 second , flashes 3 times.......led will repeat this pattern even after upgrade is supposed to have completed.
If I cycle the power, the printer returns to ready state but firmware is still at the older version.
User had been experiencing dificulties printing and firmware update might resolve the issues.
Does anyone know of a solution?

The product you have seems to be a commercial printer. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!

  • N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's sup...

Seriously don't hold your breath for too long... Nokia are truly awful at this, they treat the customers who buy their most expensive handsets with such apparent contempt it is nothing short of disgusting.
I bought an N93 which was quickly superceded and completely forgotten about. To this day it is riddled with bugs and problems, as well as lacking so many features which were added to later models of phone when there was no reason other than Nokia not providing an update or releasing the software as individual updates.
The N95 is not much different unfortunately. It is unstable and full of bugs, including frequent crashes, abysmal memory availability and management as well as annoying things like the the system ignoring key presses every so often. For all those people who don't experience any of this, lucky you! There are far too many people who do however...
I'm sure some bright spark will come on here and point out in some way how I'm wrong, that Nokia are too busy working on new phones, that we've had a firmware update or two already for the N95 or something else. The simple fact is that Nokia are marketing the N95 as a computer, even to the point of the having the advertising slogan "It's what computers have become" but in fact they are treating it like a throw away mobile phone. Even Microsoft provide better and more frequent updates to their system than this! And that really is saying something!
What a shame that they have locked down the system so much, there is a tonne of talent out there in the opensource community who could make this potentially amazing platform truly outstanding. Nokia sure as hell don't seem to have the inclination!
When will you get your firmware...? It has been over 4 months now since they last updated the N95-1. I am beginning to get the feeling that this one has just been chucked on the heap as the N93 was... the parallels between the N93/N93i release and the N95/N95-8GB situation are rather strong. After 10 years as a loyal Nokia customer I won't be making the mistake of choosing them again!!
The supposed October 28th deadline has come and gone. I have emailed Nokia 5 times and been ignored, for over 3 months now. I have called everywhere I can and get the stock response "we don't know that" or "we only get told that a few hours in advance". Assuming any of that is actually the honest truth, it makes Nokia look pretty poor in their organisation of information and product support.
The sad fact is that even IF this firmware comes out, the chances of any further updates are extremely slim. Of course you could argue that there is a lack of commercial incentive for this. The N95 platform is so jammed full of technology that it has the potential to last for 4-5 years as a perfectly decent phone and mobile computing platform, with the right system updates of course. The industry makes no bones about the fact that it wants people to upgrade every 12-18 months, it's how they make their money. This is not conspiracy theory, just a sound bit of reasoning as to why we're not going to get a long stream of support for this phone.
I read with interest that Google are launching an open platform and SDK soon. Much as I am wary of google, being the corporate giant that they are, this at least is the beginnings of a truly open platform which hopefully users will be able to work with and improve in the way that manufacturers like Nokia simply don't want to. That is of course until the phone manufacturers who move to this system lock it down like Apple have done with the iPhone and prevent free enterprise and development.
I know we live in a capitalist society, but sometimes consumers are pushed just a bit too far. It is NOT acceptable, nor environmentally friendly to push out and make obsolete technology which costs as much as a reasonable spec entry PC once a year on us.
I doubt Nokia will read this, even if they do it'll just go ignored like all the other complaints from the customers they have let-down like this.

I'm sorry but "be patient" is just not sufficient here. It has been over 4 months and these are some MAJOR bugs in the phone.
Let me detail my day so far with my N95, for those of you who are not familiar with these problems or who think that perhaps this is just a disgruntled customer who has an overinflated sense of importance.
All of this is on an N95 replacement (the first one's earpiece broke) which I have had for under 2 weeks now. It is the latest firmware and there is NOTHING installed on it, it is as it comes...
    * Full charge overnight with the phone off.
    * Switch the phone on.
    * Check my emails (I was sent a small mpeg video (700k) which I download to the phone.
    - WiFi connection is lost 4 times and I'm within 3 metres of the aerial. N95 fails to find my access point for as long as a minute after losing the connection, when everything else in my house can see it.
    * Check FaceBook mobile in web browser.
    * Read BBC news headlines in web browser.
    - clicked on 3 minute news video headlines, realplayer loads up, runs out of memory to play the video. Realplayer closes, taking the web browser with it.
    * Try to play the video I was emailed. N95 doesn't support uber-standard MPEG files, so...
    * Browse the web again, searching for how to play the MPEG.
    - someone suggests renaming the file to .3gp to make RP load it. I'm dubious but it's worth a go. I go to the menu to access the file manager. I rename the file and click on it, still no joy.
    - I close the file manager and go back to my browser, except not - it closed without warning because the memory ran out (presumably)
    * I give up trying to browse the web and lock the phone.
    * I need to make a call. I press the buttons to unlock it and mess up the timing (my fault completely)
    - I keep pressing the buttons in quick succession in my impatience (which is just pointless I know, but I was in a hurry and fumbling with it).
    - Having pressed the buttons about 8 times the phone unlocks but the screen goes dark.
    - I press the camera focus/shutter button lightly to "un-sleep" the phone. It lights up for 2 seconds and goes dark again.
    - I repeat this 3 times and the phone switches itself off!!
    * The phone restarts automatically but once rebooted is slow and laggy, missing keypresses all over the place so I have to switch off then on again... it is normal (as normal as it gets) after this.
    * I go to my PC and write this!!!!
Absolutely ALL of this is stuff the phone is supposed to do with its hands tied behind its back. I have not used any 3rd party software and never tried to use more than 2 applications at a time - the N95 IS a multitasking phone and so should handle a lot more than this!!!
This behaviour was present on the previous handset too, on both the firmware versions it had on it during its life. My current handset came with an 8-point service engineer inspection saying it was in full health...
Be patient? Even if I was prepared to mutely wait for 4+ months patiently whilst such dreadful bugs plague the phone, I am an N95 user who is concurrently paying off a contract on an N93 phone, costing me £200 ($400 US) in monthly rental for a phone which became unusable (due to signal issues on the network when I moved house to a different part of the country). Be patient? It is now about 14 months since I got the N93 and just over 12 months since the firmware was updated on that (I quote from the firmware date on my N93). Nokia dropped that one like a hot stone and completely screwed everyone who had bought it. Be patient? You must be kidding me! When Nokia, despite an all-singing-all-dancing website cannot ever be bothered to make even the most non-committal of announcements about firmware on it's own forums, why on earth should I be patient? I understand as a programmer myself all to well that things can slide and problems can delay things, but at this point I can't even find solid information to say there will be another update for this, let alone when it MIGHT arrive or what it will HOPEFULLY include... and as I said in my original post, I have telephoned and been fobbed off and had 5 emails ignored (not including the ones about the N93 which were also ignored). And yes, I did get the received message report from Nokia's own system saying someone would come back to me.
I'm sorry to rant at you, I'm sure it's not your fault but be patient? Just not acceptable any more!

  • IPhoto and iMovie won't update.  Repeated Thunderbolt update req.

    Hi,
    Since downloading Mavericks last night:
1.) Both iPhoto and iMovie updates fail to download- they get to almost halfway and then an error pops up that it can't be completed.
2.) Additionally, I am getting a repeated Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2 no matter how many times i update and restart.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was trying to update iphoto 9.4.3, through the app store. then this message comes up
you have updates available for other accounts
to update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.
i'm the only one on my mac. i only have 1 itunes account so it has nothing to do with any UserID issue. i tried reindexing spotlight. This has been an issue for about a month now.  Then i deleted iPhoto app and securely emptied the trash. All my software was in my macbook pro when it was shipped to me Feb. 2011. These are the two software, in question. iMovie is giving me the same message now.

  • EFI Firmware Update 1.2. won't install

I can't find exactly my problem but some threads are close. I keep getting software updates for EFI Firmware Update 1.2.
I shut down, then startup holding on-button until it flashes, release, buzz buzz, chime, then very briefly the apple logo and status bar, then gone, buzz buzz, chime and restart. After everything loads, there is the update window with install instructions, telling me to repeat if I see them, to no avail (tried several times over several weeks). My HD appears to be correctly partitioned, with this boot ROM: IM51.0090.B03 which would seem to indicate the update has not happened. I have unplugged all my peripherals (printer, zip drive) but not DSL modem.
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance

I would delete the firmware updater that is in your Utilities folder and check your account settings(System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items) to see if it has been added to your login items. If so then remove. Re-run your software update and see if the Firmware update shows up again. If so then download and try again. According to Apple your BootROM should be IM51.0090.B09 after the update.

  • Macbook PRO EFI 2.3 firmware update broken

EFI 2.3 firmware update broke the network again. EFI 2.2 fixed what was broken in 2.0 & 2.1 but the
same problem is back in 2.3. Laptop wakes up and I have to wait about a minute for things to kick-in.
I am able to use utilities using system calls (ping, dig, etc) but Mail.app, Safari or anything else for
that matter is reporting that network is down (not sure if these are using an internal caching daemon
or something similar). On the initial 2.3 update the screen wake-up was also broken, I would touch
the pad or a key but the screen would remain dim and would light up after 30 or so seconds. Applying
2.3 twice fixed this issue. Following is an entry from system.log, you can see that the laptop is trying
to connect to the AP twice:

At one point I though it was Parallels that's breaking this, but disable/restart of Parallels did not help.
    Any hits ?

Wow! Exact same issues here. Exactly! The same slow screen-wakeup and screen-saver freezes.
Additionally, any time I try to view video in a web browser, it freezes (other things seems to do it too, but the web video (e.g. youtube) was one thing which was a reliable/reproducible cause of crash). BUT, when I use gfxcardstatus to force Discrete graphics only, then it seems to work fine. Manually switching it to Integrated (with gfxcardstatus), or allowing it to automatically switch, results in an immediate freeze. The freeze is not a kernel panic; the mouse still moves, but the interface is totally unresponsive. Well, technically almost totally unresponsive: Ctrl-Eject did EVENTUALLY (like, after minutes!) bring up the shutdown dialog on at least one occasion. But that's largely irrelevant, I can't work like that.
I had real trouble trying to install the EFI 2.3 update - in fact, I have not managed to install it according to Software Update.
After "installing" EFI 2.3, upon restart I get a bad chime (the sad-Mac sort of noise) rather than the usual start-up chime. Then there's a noise as though it's trying to spin up a hard disk or something, which abruptly cuts off though. It does that a few times (brmmmm,chk...brmmmm, chk, ...). I force-restarted it with the power button, held Cmd-Opt-P-R and then it did it's usual restart, and then booted. But Software Update says that the EFI 2.3 firmware is not installed.
Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Any thoughts?

  • Macbook air flash storage firmware update 1.0 make me crazy

    Hi,
I've a mba late 2012, bought just 3 days ago. It has warranty, and it's all ok, except for this F*****G storage firmware update.
AppStore notified of this, so i connect to power source, and install ( FileVault is disabled ).
    and here, starts trouble:
    1. The notebook reboot after install instead of shut down -> and I can acceptate this, i've read that's very common!
    2. I watch SERIAL ATA revision AND IT'S AGREE WITH APPLE -> TPVABBF0
    3. So, theorically, it's all ok. But, however the firmware revision it's updated, the appStore still repeats me to install it!!!
Any helps will be apreciated, i'm at pain threshold and i want mavericks.
    Thx!

The update requires 10.7.5 be installed. If yours has no modifications then it has 10.7.4 installed, so you will first need to update OS X.

  • After installing an SSD into my optical bay, I've found out I need EFI Firmware Update 2.2. I can only find 2.3 which is not supported on my Mac. What can I do?

After installing an SSD into my optical bay, I've found out I need EFI Firmware Update 2.2. I can only find 2.3 which is not supported on my Mac. What can I do?

You do not want EFI 2.2, it bricked many 2011 MacBook Pro machines.
EFI 2.3 is the fix. Software Update should install it if you need it, but it goes to the boot drive as that's where the hidden EFI resides.
Check out this link of machines and their EFI versions
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Also if your SSD should be in the hard drive bay as it makes a better boot/applicaitions drive, not a good storage drive as it wears out with repeated use and is not "scrubbable" like a regular hard drive
The hard drive should be in the optical bay and used as a storage drive, you have things all messed up inside your machine, Apple doesn't support or expect the optical drive to be used as such to begin with, then as a boot drive is just asking for trouble. So use the optical bay as storage and not as a boot bay.
Also you can't install OS X or Windows or use a Firmware restore disk because it only works from a internal optical drive, which you have removed.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
You need to learn all about cloning etc., as you have no other means to boot the machine.

  • SSH changes vs future firmware update

Hullo, I have made some changes to WD My Cloud via SHH: I disabled ipv6;I stopped two services through crontab (S85wdmcserverd and S86wdphotodbmergerd)etc, according to http://blog.cloud-client.info/?p=1365 In case of future firmware update and I perform the installation will the changes done be overwritten?Would be advisable to accept the update in the future? Thank you in advance.

Indeed, an answer from a user that has experienced the aggravation of firmware updating and vowed never again will he update; unless he has two clouds (one to update and the other to keep as backup). yes... once you update your firmware, all changes will be lost and if you had store script files in the /usr/local/sbin directory, they will be gone too... In a sense it is a good thing because if you had done a lot a changes, this reverts your device back to original factory state. Now I have heard rumors that if you by pass too many firmware updates and decided to upgrade from, lets say 3.04 (which happens to coincide with my current version) to the latest firmware 4.xxx which is probably 6 update versions ago, your device will be bricked. They say, the customers that runs and replies in this forum, that you will need to upgrade your firmware one by one until you reach the latest version. The other rumor is that many have updated their firmware to the latest version to find that nothing works, speed is slower, usb connections don't connect and of course drop outs are more frequent. Then there are those who says "I've upgraded and everything is fine", but that particular user probably has 5MB of data on his drive. Now here is what I suggest. 1. Always have another copy of your data which has nothing to do with firmware updates. Never ever copy your data to the Cloud device and erase the original unless you have another copy somewhere else. If you don't have another device and don't wish to buy another device, either leave the original on your original drive and use the Cloud as your backup, or subscribe to one of the free or paid online storage to keep a backup copy, but don't rely on the online storage as your only copy either, since places like Megaupload may disappear overnight and your only copy may be in the hands of the FBI.2. if you upgrade your firmware, it is better to have another Cloud for a 3rd backup. That way if something fails (and it would feel like it expecially when it goes white light on you), you have another device to use while the other one is being RMAed.3. If you have stopped the scans from occuring, the first thing that happens after an update is a flurry of activity from your Cloud trying to catch up on its scans and you might get locked out. So be prepared to SSH into it as soon as it lets you which is way way after the white light stays on for several hours (speaking from experience). 4. Once you SSH in, be prepare to repeat the fixes that you applied to your last version. For four years (or more), I haven't seen a switch to turn off the media scans although in version 3.04, they actually turned off the scans automatically dues to processor overload and it had a message on the UI telling me that the scans has been stopped and in order to restart the scans you must reboot (I didn't reboot for 6 months). You can skip firmware upgrades as I have without too much problems. Although they have fixed a couple of potential security threats, none of them should potentially affect you since you are behind a router. Although eventually I expect that I will have to upgrade my firmware simply for the reason that the matching iphone app will require the latest version. Perhaps on that day, I will sell my Cloud and move on to a more robust NAS. Good luck..  edit: the/bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S86wdphotodbmergerd stop /bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S85wdmcserverd stop  are not permanent changes. If you reboot the Cloud, those two process will restart. The update-rc.d commands will disable the processes until you upgrade the firmware.

  • Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update "An Unexpected Error Occurred (0)" HELP

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update (Version 1.1) Size (970 KB)
"The SMC Firmware Update adjusts fan behavior in Mac Pro. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process."
-----THIS IS WHAT HAPPEND TO ME----I try this morning to install and this is what I got:
" An unexpected error occurred (0).
Your firmware can not be Updated. "
    "See www.apple.com/support for more information."

Are you booting from RAID? even though it warns that you can't be booting from RAID, some people still run the update.
    Any problem with your system?
While it only says that you need to quit any and all open programs, sometimes it helps to reboot (and boot into Safe Mode) just to begin the process.
When there was an SMC Firmware update before (last fall) some people also had trouble.
We aren't mind readers, and to say it failed doesn't give those of us reading this (and non of us are Apple tech support) a lot to go on.
+Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.+
+To update the SMC firmware on your Mac Pro:+
+Your computer’s power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.+
+1. Quit all other open applications.+
+2. Click Restart in the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart.+
+The SMC firmware update starts automatically. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes.+
+Important: Do not interrupt the update.+
+Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update.+
+3. Click OK. The SMC firmware is now up-to-date.+
+If these instructions appear on your screen again, the SMC firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2 and 3.+
    Note:
+This update requires a Macintosh formatted disk or partition. If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) subsystem, you must attach a Macintosh formatted storage device to apply this update.+
*+Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from installing correctly.+*
*If you are having trouble installing an update try disconnecting non-essential devices and use only an Apple branded keyboard, mouse and monitor.+*

  • AWK Firmware Update 1.1 Broke Keyboard.

3 battery keyboard updated successfully and worked fine for 2 days after the update. Started pushing random characters by itself and keys repeating by itself (impossible to type a 5 letter word without a lot of junk), some symbols not even on the keyboard.
Tried changing the batteries and re-pairing it and it wouldn't re-pair. Keyboard was detected but always "Error connecting" tried it on a Windows machine and wouldn't connect either.
Ended up taking it back under warranty and it wouldn't pair with the stores Mac either. Got a replacement 2 battery keyboard.
Seems suspicious that it died 2 days after the firmware update.

same story here, worked fine for exactly 2 days and now will type NO letters at all.

For months I have been repeatedly asked via software update to run the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2. The update gray screen shows up, but before the status bar can complete, the computer restarts. Other users have gotten relief with unplugging their usb and thunderbolt devices but I have no such devices attached to my computer. Anyone else?

    Hello there terrie_808,
If the update still seems to not be taking for your Thunderbolt Display, I would like to recommend the troubleshooting in the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2: Keeps reappearing and Thunderbolt ports and Target Display Mode may not work
After installing Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2:
    Thunderbolt ports may not work.
Target Display Mode may no longer work.
The update may keep reappearing as available for download.
This occurs when a self-powered Thunderbolt device (other than a directly-connected Thunderbolt display) is connected to a Thunderbolt port while installing the update.
    To resolve this issue:
    Shutdown your computer.
    Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
    Wait 10 seconds.
If you are using a Mac mini with a Thunderbolt display, reconnect the Thunderbolt display directly to your computer via the Thunderbolt port. Do not connect other Thunderbolt devices at this time.
    Restart your computer.
If the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 is offered, download and install it and restart your computer when asked. If the Thunderbolt Update is not offered, the update has installed correctly.
    Reconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Firmware update on cRIO pn c module

I am looking to update the firmware in a Comsoft Profinet cRIO c series module. The data length is not outputting the configured data length. The module is in the 4th slot in a cRIO 9076 unit. The module is working but updates the data very slowly. I have attached a picture from the getting started manual showing the parameter and the note about the parameter.

    MrSinatra,
I think it is very well possible that the drivers on your cd do not recognize the updated x-fi anymore. the cd is probably useless now.
a screenshot of this firmware update will most likely not be possible because you cannot repeat it! since you cannot downgrade the firmware, the update routine won't run again the next time even if you run the same driver update again.
let them call you a stupid idiot. it doesnt matter. you have seen it, i have seen it, others have seen it. so we know it happens, right?
as to what this cthelper.exe actually is, i have also wondered already. i also have read Soundcard sams comment as well and checked and i also do not see it anymore in vista. it seems to be gone. I have googled a little but it looks like nobody really knows what it does. its probably just not necessary anymore with the new drivers i suppose.
Just check your startup reg and disable it. see if it makes any difference. maybe u don't need it anymore either. maybe its just the old registry entry that didn't get deleted and still calls it at startup? just try. I can still see it being acti've in my Windows XP Sp3 installation (32bit) though. Seems like its just not acti've in vista anymore. just toy around with it a little. you'll notice if it breaks something if you mess it up ;-)
Oh and btw: there is another tool running now, its called Ctxfihlp.exe and it might just be a replacement of the old one...
