Repeated iMac Problems, Display Issues now Kernel Panics

I’m lost on what’s wrong with my 2008 iMac and I think I just have to bring it back into Apple for a third time to have it repaired. But something is obviously not working that is causing these issues.
About a month ago, my computer began showing heavy pixilation, flickering images and the on-screen graphics. The computer appeared to keep working in the background from what I could tell so I came to conclusion that it must be the graphics card that’s failing and I’ll need to have it looked at.
My 2008 iMac was custom-built by Apple with the Nvidia GeForce 8800GS that was offered as an upgrade option. There have been several posts on the display and graphics discussion board about that graphics card along with other postings other places about the problems the Nvidia GeForce 8-series had.
The display problems I mention above would not happen immediately, it would happen as the computer warmed up and was used for 3-5 minutes.
Anyway I brought my computer into Apple explained to them what I believed was the problem and the Apple Store technician agreed with me. Because I did not purchase AppleCare, it cost me $400 and a week without my iMac to have that card replaced.
I got the computer back two weeks ago and everything seemed fine. It was working as it always had. I even was running SMC Fan Control in order to keep the computer as cool as I could (the Nvidia problem was related to overheating).
But this morning, this is what I woke up to:
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7436/photoijr.jpg
The computer now has a semi-permanent pixilation when it starts up (as suppose to the pixilation 3-5 minutes into use). But more worrisome now is I cannot start up the computer without it going into a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM, I tried starting in safe mode. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is booting from an external HD which I will try this evening (to hopefully isolate it if it’s hardware or a software problem).
The Apple Hardware Test has been unhelpful. When it originally failed three weeks ago, the test showed nothing and this morning when I ran it (permanent pixilation and all), it showed nothing. I feel like if it was a software issue the pixilation would have disappeared during the hardware test because that’s not an OS-X based program.
Here are my specs on this computer:
2008 iMac 24" 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo, 4 gigs of RAM (Crucial Purchased, I have original sticks somewhere), 1 TB HD, Nvidia GeForce 8800GS.

Hi, just to update you, I came home today and did a few things that didn't seem to solve my Mac's problems:
- I booted up from my firewire "safe" drive that I keep a copy os x on to see if I had a corrupted hard drive or something. It booted into the kernel panic I described above.
- I also swapped out the crucial RAM for Apple's factory RAM. It also booted into the Kernel Panic.
In both incidents, the display issues didn't go away. Now instead of pixelization i have vertical bars running in a pattern across my screen.
I'm currently trying to boot onto the OS X CD at this point to see if I could do a reinstall. It's taking quite awhile to boot into that.
With that in mind, I think we're still having graphics card issues or more seriously some logic board problem.

  • Post-Modification Problems: Hard Freezes. Kernel Panic?

So, I bought a used Dual 867MHz MDD back in March and it appeared to be 100% functional. It even had gone through the PSU/fan exchange program (and was still slightly loud). Comparing it to a Dual 867MHz MDD I got just a week ago, it had a different PSU, all different fans, a different heatsink, different optical drive, and a better GPU (Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB as opposed to the "new" DP867 having a GeForce 4 MX 32MB).
About two weeks ago I overclocked the system bus on the first DP867 to 167MHz, thus bringing the CPUs to 1.08GHz. No problems there. I even changed the heatsink to a copper one from a DP1.42GHz FW800 model. Again, no problems. Pre-mod I had a 4x512MB config of PC2700 Crucial DDR memory at CL2.5. I replaced those with a 2x1GB config of PC3200 Princeton DDR memory at CL2 (2-3-2-5 to be exact) that have heatspreaders. I didn't change the GPU (though I have a Radeon 9800 Pro I'm going to put in once I resolve my problems... read on...).
Pre-mod and post-mod any RAM that is PC2700 or faster is showing up as PC2600 in System Profiler, which I find very odd. That same Crucial RAM is now in the un-modded DP867 which has a 133MHz bus and it, again, shows up as PC2600. I find this odd.
When I first got the now-modded MDD, I replaced the stock 60GB IBM HDD with a Maxtor 200GB drive that has a 16MB buffer. Works fine. All this time, though, it was on the ATA66 bus. Post-mod, I moved it to the ATA100 bus and then my problems began...
The machine would boot just fine. In fact, it would boot so fast I never saw the blue OS X loading screen. Kind of freaky. Then it would HARD crash in 1-5 minutes. The only solution was to hold in the power button until the machine turned off. Putting the drive back on the ATA66 bus didn't help. Back on the ATA100 bus, I could not re-install OS X from a 10.4.3 disc I have (guy who sold me the first MDD included that and iLife '06) because it couldn't verify the hard drive. Fortunately, I had so little on the drive, I backed it up to one of the spare 60GBs by putting them both in the second MDD and using Carbon Copy Cloner (great app!).
With the Maxtor on the ATA66 bus, I could re-install OS X, so I did. I did the Archive & Install so as not to have to deal with migrating user data. First thing I noticed when it rebooted into a fresh 10.4.3 was the CPU temperature at 60°C! As far as I know, these particular PPC chips max at 62. I freaked. I shut the machine down and let it sit for several hours before booting back up and patching to 10.4.7 and re-installing the Developer tools (and patching those to Xcode 2.4). This was a problematic process, interestingly.
My system is now back to the way it was pre-mod and though it's working a lot better, it will still occassionaly hard crash/freeze. Is this a kernel panic? When I shut it down and then boot back up it tells me I can send a report to Apple, but rarely does it show me the report.
Here're the things I think could be problematic or just some possible ideas:
    1. I was under the impression that the 167MHz bus would recognize PC2700 speeds, but all my fast RAM shows as PC2600, which isn't even a real speed. This worries me a bit, as slower RAM doesn't play nicely with the faster bus.
    2. The Acbel PSU doesn't have enough output. I believe it's 360W max (what an odd value). I changed all the fans to be quieter (and thus slower), but the 120mm main case fan had to run off of one of the 12V power leads since it uses too much power to go off the mobo's 2-pin lead meant for said 120mm fan. I also added two 60mm behinds the heatsink which are on a fan controller (also hooked up to one of the 12V leads - I only have one HDD and one optical drive, so there're lots of leads). I also plan on putting a Radeon 9800 Pro in, but now I wonder if this PSU just can't handle the added pull from the OCed bus (and CPUs) and extra fans (not to mention slightly more power-hungry 120mm fan).
    3. The PC3200 RAM's 2-3-2-5 timings don't sit well with the system. The MDDs should be able to handle both CL2 memory and a 2x1GB config according to developer documentation for them.
    4. I messed up the ATA100 bus during the modding, though with nothing attached to it, I don't see why this should be an issue.
    5. Repeatedly opening and closing the case has weakened the thermal paste and I need to re-attach the heatsink. I doubt this is true, but you never know.
    6. The PSU is over-heating? I know they get really hot and I'm in agreement with other modders that the MDD design is not thermally officient.
    7. The CPUs are overheating. Temperature Monitor, post-mod and not including the post-OS X reinstall temp reading, has yet to show these CPUs hit 60°C. They get to the mid 50's no problem, and in fact, get to the high 40s very fast (and then VERY slowly rise to the mid 50s from there). Overall, then, the system is warmer than it was pre-mod, which I find odd considering the better heatsink and extra fans.
    8. These processors just aren't 100% stable at 1.08GHz. It's possible if you consider the way processors are made and why they get clocked to the speeds they get clocked to. Or...
    9. The whole CPU board needs more voltage, which would require some more soldering.
Lastly, this machine seems to, since the mod, be cursed by the PowerMac G4 "No Sleep For You!" Bug. No matter how you put it to sleep or wake it up, only the fans kick in on wake-up and none of the rest of the system. Holding the power button shuts it down, and after booting it tells me I can send an error report to Apple, and again it only occassionaly shows me said report. My father has a un-modded 733MHz Digital Audio G4 that can't sleep and my un-modded Dual 867 MDD can't sleep (it wakes up, then hard crashes about 5 seconds later).
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Not to knock the fine folks at MacMod.com, but I haven't been getting the kind of feedback on all of this I was hoping for there.

    Thanks in advance!

A few people out there have assured me that if I don't max out the system in terms of add-ons and things, the PSU should be more than adequate. I have 1x fan controller, 1x HDD, 1x optical drive, 1x graphics card in AGP slot that doesn't require an extra 12V power lead, no PCI cards, only two sticks of RAM, an overclocked system bus, and one fan hooked to a 12V lead rather than its 2-pin connection on the mobo (after discovering it doesn't run on said 2-pin connection). I've also taken out the case speaker to allow air to be pulled in through the top of the case.
I plan on adding two more fans to the fan controller (it can support 4). These fans will go at the bottom front of the case (under the face plate) and run at low speeds just to make sure the process of air flowing through the lower case starts off strong. So, two 60mm fans start it, the 120mm fan forces it past the heatsink (though as many probably know, not the whole heatsink - what a great design...), and then the two 60mm's behind the heatsink pull hot air out of the case.
Thanks for the info about System Profiler, Malcolm. I think you're right, though - if the CPUs were overheating, it would shut down. That's the whole point of the TAU's or whatever they're called.
I'm starting to think that either the 2-3-2-5 PC3200 RAM is suspect, or the processors are not stable at 1.08GHz. I'd downclock them back to 867MHz, but I think I need to buy some surface-mount resistors for that, and I really don't know what kind to get (as in, how many ohms).

  • Weird color issues and Kernel panic!

Okay, so last night I was running tech tool maintenence, and I had repair on. So, it finished scanning my startup volume (I was on my eDrive) and then I shut down and restarted. Now, it tried to start from my startup volume (tiger 4.7, with latest updates) and it says you need to restart your computer (which means there is a kernel panic, am I right?) I try safe mode to no avail, I even reset the PMU and reset the PRAM (but I didnt hear the starup noise again). So, I put in my backup HD, and it starts up, but wait! Now the video is horribly wrong! It is all in TERRIBLE quality and in mostly only greys, I mean it looks like a 4 mb vram video card, there are very few pixels of color( there are some intermitedly) and there is terrible ghosting, and I can barely read anything. so, I checked my display, and universal access settings, and fooled around with those, and nothing happened. So, now I try and start from my eDriveand it start, but now it has the same horrible color problem as my other drive. Oh boy, this is a new computer, and I already have a kernel pnic, and a video problem, what can I do? Thanks for any help. Matthew. I have a sawtooth, a radeon 9200 flashed video card, and the latest tiger.

Since it references com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily, I suspect that some FW device is causing the panic. Disconnect all of them and see if that stops the problem. As for general KP stuff, start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Dropped iBook G4 (no damage), Now Kernel Panics

I recently dropped my 4 year old iBook G4 (while it was sleeping) onto a wood table from about a foot up. When I tried restarting it, I kept getting kernel panics. So I completely reinstalled the OS (Leopard). Now I can do most tasks on the computer, but I still get kernel panics on a regular basis. I think there is clearly a hardware issue, although there is apparently NO physical damage to the machine. There is nothing wrong with the hard drive, which is the only mechanical device that could possibly be damaged by a drop, right? Reinstalling Leopard didn't really solve the problem. (I'm looking for an Apple Hardware Test disc to see if that will help diagnose the problem...)
Any words of advice? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Here are the details for the kernel panic (after I reinstalled 10.5 -- I haven't updated to 10.5.6 yet):

A drop could damage the motherboard causing a break or intermittent break. As the iBook heats and cools the connection can be intermittent causing it to work and fail randomly.

  • 800Mhz FP now Kernel Panics Daily

Well, I've run pretty much every test that I have access to and still can't really pin point the cause of the kernel panics that I am seeing.
So I'm going to post the last panic log and see what people think.

    Hi Dave,
I've had really similar problems for many months, and I think Apple Tech Support found a solution. Check out this article:
    Charlie

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Kernel panic when using Internet Sharing with a dialup connection
If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.
To avoid this issue in the future, deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Network.
    3. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
    4. Click the PPP Options button.
    5. Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Apply Now.
    8. Quit System Preferences.

  • My late 2012 iMac keeps shuting down by Kernel Panics

I been having several Kernel Panics on the last few days. I ran an AHT and it returned a memory failure so I contacted OWC to replace the modules. I extracted the modules yesterday and will ship them by the end of the week. The KPs still happening, AHT says everything is ok. I thought it was my TB-FW adapter that I use for external hard drives but even if I unplug it the mac keeps shuting down. I ran Onyx to repair permissions ans sed me to Disk Utility due a Disk error. I ran Disk Utiliry in repair mode and it says it can't repare the dik and I need to format and back up data. I am trying to back up but KPs dont let me. Here is the first KP message on Mar 21 an the last on Mar 25. Hope someone can help. Thank you all!

I removed the two DIMMs and I'm writing this on safe mode. I have noticed some flickering on the display, but not the entire screen. Let's say in Safari, the progres barr flickers or while scrolling. Is this normal?
This is the las KP I have had. This was before I remove the RAM.

  • IPod Restore failed, now Kernel Panic when connect to Mac

My iPod is a little older and has had trouble updating though the iPod Updaters so in order to get the latest updater on my iPod I've had to just restor the iPod using that specific updater. iPod Updater froze during my last restore and now I have incomplete software on my iPod and connecting it to my Mac results in immediate kernel panic. How can I get my iPod back to a usable state?
    Thanks.

Just got back from trying this idea and IT WORKS. For people that might have this problem, I booted from the CD/DVD and lauched Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk. I did it twice actually for good measure. Afterwards I booted back to the System Folder on the HD and I performed a restore of my iPod using the iPod Updater 2005-06-26.app updater. I've read that my whatever generation iPod works best with that one (I have the click wheel with the 4 buttons above it).
    Thanks for all your help.

  • 10.4.5 to 10.4.6; now Kernel Panic during boot

I upgraded my G4 tower last thursday to 10.4.6 and then shut it down for the weekend. Now eveytime I try to boot, I get a Kernel Panic either during the boot or within a few minutes / seconds of logging in.
Is this something that can be fixed with the Disk Utility? Could it be a hardware issue?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Kernel panics can be either hardware or hardware driver issues, or directory issues. If your data is backed up, you can try repairing the directory. If your data is not backed up, recovering from such a scenario can be difficult.

  • Issue after kernel panic from update! Please help

Is anyone having issues with their computer after doing the reinstall? I too had the same problem yesterday as thousands of other people had. Took me 9 hours to reinstall lion. I was very happy when I realized I didn't lose all my data. (Guess I learned my lesson on backups) My problem is: Today after my computer is working again is is so stinking slow..... Im talking it has been 15 minutes to load the new mac commercial (30 second ad, on apple.com) In that 15 minutes it has only loaded 20 seconds of it. It is still trying to load the rest so I can stream it? I have never had an issue with speed. It is taking me nearly 4-5 minutes for every email I click just to pull up and read it. Something is wrong? I know it isn't my internet, we have 3 other computers in the house that work the way they always have. My laptop has always been the fastest of them all. I need help! Anyone have any suggestions? Is is possible if the update damaged the flash drive or something? All I know after 9 hours computer loss yesterday and my computer taking all day today to answer a few lousy emails is killing me, I need a solution. I have tried cleared the cache and reset safari with no luck.
    Please advise...

    HI Chris,
Kernel panics are sometimes causes by hardware issues. Probably a good idea at this point to check the boot disk for errors.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

  • All fine and now kernel panic once a week?

After years of never having seen one, I am getting kernel panics about once a week. They seem to occur when I am online. I am running OS 10.6.8 (yes, I know) and have had no problems. I had been running Norton Antivirus (yes, I now know about that too) without incident for a few years but have now removed it. Otherwise nothing has changed except for whenever the last Apple system update was. I am currently up to date, OS not withstanding.
Below is the log for the last panic if anyone is a kernel whisperer:

  • New iMac - 2 days old - One kernel Panic!

    Should I be worried?
Successfully migrated 4 user accounts and all else running smoothly.

Thanks for the very comprehensive link.
I'm pleased to report that we have had no repeat of the kernel panic since - fingers crossed.
I have ruled out hardware and RAM using the tests prescribed. I've also ran RP and all the maintenance scripts using Main Menu. I have not done any testing with peripherals as I've not had a problem since. At the time of the KP there was no 3rd party software installed as I left the old apps. folder behind on the old mac.
I have a hunch what caused the problem. The night before it happened, I discovered the new Parental Controls in System Prefs. This must have caused my son a few headaches the next day as he didn't even know about the new computer let alone a new set of parental controls! He was on the computer imediately before the KP.
I read the panic log and it says that the problem was specifically related to Parental Controls. I have seen other posts that hint this new feature might be buggy. I have since turned it off, which might be why there's been no repeat.
Would be very interested in your opinion on this. I can post the log if you like.
    Thanks again.

  • Interlacing problem - display issue or something else?

    Hi, another interlacing question...
So I captured my footage (originally shot on film, telecined to digibeta) at 10 bit uncompressed to do my online (the offline edit was a 29.97 DVCam dub of that digibeta). Since I'm finishing on 29.97 digibeta, I didn't remove the pulldown as I captured offline or online, and am editing both at my finishing medium's frame rate. So yes, I have the duped fields in there, but it also keeps things simple and I've theoretically been seeing exactly what the finished version will look like the whole time.
Last time I did this workflow I used a G4 running a dual 867 processor with a gig of RAM, and I had some jitter and interlacing "comb" visible when I watched the 10-bit on the Mac, but when I output to digibeta and DVD, it looked fine. So it appeared to be that my computer simply didn't have the juice to display it properly, but that the media itself was fine, as were both ways of outputting.
Now I have a spankin' new Mac Pro with a quad 2.66G processor and 3Gigs of RAM, so I figured that "display issue" was behind me. But not only do I still see jitter and comb on my computer monitor, I also see it much worse on the test DVD I just made. So the problem isn't just the display. The look is very similar to when you capture a clip and remove the pulldown, but fail to start capture on an A frame (but since this is all 29.97, I know that isn't the problem).
I thought it might be that the drives were not fast enough, so I reformatted two of my internal drives into a Raid 0 and put the media there and reconnected it. The raid seems happy, and it's less than half full, but the video doesn't look any better.
Any idea what else could be causing this? I did just upgrade the project from the FCP 4.5 version I started to the FCP 6 on the new machine, plus my experience has been that moving from offline DV to online can allow in some bugs, but the ins/outs, clip names, frame rates, haven't changed. And of course I've been editnig 29.97 DV this whole time without seeing any of the interlacing on the monitor or tyhe outputs. Could field dominance have anything to do with this? I've never adjusted that in previous applications of this workflow, so it doesn't seem relevant, but I confess I'm not sure what I'm messing with there. Do I need still more RAM? The computers we ran at school a couple of years ago were running 10 bit video on G5s without significant upgrades to my knowledge, and this is just a single stream with a few tracks of audio here. I'm afraid to spend any more $$ until I'm pretty confident it'll solve the problem (shoestring budget here of course). Any thoughts?
    Many thanks.
    -Jeremy

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have a way to hook up my computer to a broadcast monitor. I know I should, but can't really afford the card to do it. So I color corrected my footage carefully during telecine, and for things like this issue, I'm making DVDs quick and dirty through iDVD, then watching them on my home TV (an LCD that plays both SD and HD).
I suppose something in my DVD player and/or TV might be giving me the weirdness in the display, but I think I mentioned I did this same workflow before on a lowly G4, and back then while the computer display showed the interlacing problems, the final output looks fine on the same TV/DVD setup I'm using now. (And I also output that timeline on the previous project to a digibeta master and it looked great too--unfortunately no way to test that digibeta output on the present project without going to a post house, which of course cuts into the budget.)
Maybe I need to bite the bullet and stop being so cheap, but I'm hung up on the fact that it worked fine before, and I can't see how this stronger computer is performing comparatively poorly.
BTW I do see the interlacing in FCP viewer and canvas, but only when it's set to 100% size. And it looks identical in Quicktime as well.
The other thought that just occurred to me is that it might be a codec issue. Perhaps the uncompressed 10 bit codec on my new machine isn't quite the same 10 bit uncompressed as the Kona card used to capture the video for both new and old projects. Maybe my old computer worked ok because that codec was slightly different, or I may have even copied the codec to that computer at some point in the past.
Any of this spur any other ideas? Again I really appreciate the help...
    -Jeremy

  • How to resolve booting issues after kernel panic?

After a kernal panic occurred, whenever I restart my computer the light flashes and it emits one loud harsh beep. I have to force it off and turn it on again to get it to boot, everything else works normally. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
This screen appeared, which apparently indicates a kernel panic.

  • My new (late 2013) iMac keeps rebooting due to kernel panic

I just picked up a brand-new iMac and pumped it up with 32Gb of RAM. Kinda surprised to have unexpected restarts twice a day (although it really does reboot FAST) Sorta bad though as I'm a designer and need to keep saving my projects every 30 seconds for fear of crashes.
Anybody else? Here's the report.... Fun part is the BSD process name is different every time

SInce it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them deal with it.
Alternatively, boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall Parallels. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See
